Hunger in our world knows no political boundaries. Fortunately, neither do the numerous nongovernmental organizations that strive to feed the people of the world. Ron Fridell identifies the scope of the hunger problem, and, in a spirit of hope, tells the reader of effective efforts and remarkable stories of progress in the war on hunger. The War on Hunger: Dealing with Dictators, Deserts, and Debt in Fridell's "In a Perfect World" series introduces readers to agencies that tackle the problem of hunger in the world, such as the Landless Workers Movement, the Heifer Project International, New York's City Harvest, and Creed Alliance in Pakistan, to name a few. Color photos and "How You Can Help"at the end of the book make this a valuable story that raises awareness of one of our global problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Missing and Murdered Children
I think this book was very informative. I was doing a research paper and if I didn't have to have four periodicals I would have only used this book. I thought it was great, it was sad but it was good for my paper. I would recommend it for anyone related to this topic or that needs information on this topic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing incredible
This book rather disappointed me. It wasn't able to catch my attention, and didn't really have a point. There wasn't really a plot, and the character was a rather flat, bland young man. The writing style was interesting, certainly, but it got extremely annoying and repetitive after a while. Too many things were used again and again, which didn't help this story one bit.
5-0 out of 5 stars American Classic
This coming of age story should be read by everyone. However, smart young people will gain more from it than less observant (or more stupid) young people. Take the test, if you like the book, then chances are you are smart. If you didn't like the book, or you didn't read the book, then you are probably stupid.

5-0 out of 5 stars "...incredibly attractive breakdown."
Some people really hate this book -- I can see why you think Holden is irritating, but...it's not that he's right about things, or that you're meant to think he's right. Or that you should even BELIEVE half the things he says. He's not going to come out and say,

I'm the type who could go on for hours about Holden and Pheobe and Ally's mitt and the girl who plays checkers and keeps the kings in the back. Everybody will obviously find their own meanings and understandings tothese side reveries Holden takes us through. I just couldn't pass theopportunity to comment on the reviewers who said that Holden rambled andbored them in some ways. I wonder if these were the kids who had to readthe book as assigned reading in a class they took in high school orcollege. I reccommend they go back.. cause I always go back to The Catcherand discover a new dawning of what Holden is trying to communicate to me.Try reading it again, it's not that big of a book you know. And maybe thistime you'll see it's not really boring useless ramblings. It's a great dealmore. That's the greatest part of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars i see my self in place of holden he is so real .
This is one book which is close to reality, a book which relates to you ,as if i would have written this book if i ever had the guts to run away , to stay alone depressed and all . its hard to forget what your past was allthe kids you meet may be good may be bad may be some you hated but its likeyou remember certain moments of certain days not that somthing specialhappened that day may be nothing happened but still you can picture it .Holden's character is one to which all the youths can identify with . I didnot get the meaning of the title till Holden tells Phobey about what hewants to be , "THE CATCHER IN THE RYE".I probably want to be ,idon't know what but somebody different somebody good , a person who hascertain amount of "HUMAN TOUCH". It is just that i seem to losemy way like holden. Holden was a dreamer , a child depressed by thecircumstances . Its the best book i ever read or probably will ever read ,definately no.1 book of all times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: THE SIMPLE GIFT
In a counterpoint to THE LORD OF THE FLIES, and other grim tales where a lack of structure or authority leads to chaos and harshness and evil intent, Australian author Steven Herrick has created a world in which a young man striving for autonomy is able to attain an idyllic existence away from the rule makers and the rule breakers.

5-0 out of 5 stars coming of age
Although I loved this book, I was hestitant to include it on my classroom shelves for 8th graders. Now that I am now teaching high school, I decided to include this book on the shelves in my classroom for SSR time.Since August, eight of my male students have read the book. I was very pleasantly surprised when there was no giggling about the book. Then I noticed that it was only the most mature of my students that were choosing to read it.At the beginning of the school year, I included the book in book talks, and that peaked the interest of some of my students. However, the less mature students never get past the first chapter. Even if you're not a teenager, I recommend this book highly. My husband enjoyed it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars the run away
The kid left his home and went to work on a beet field. He made friends with the Mexicans. He followed then around and worked with them. Then on one of the farms the farmer offered him a job. Then he drove a tractor for the farmer. Then one day when he came up from the fielded there was a cop waiting for him. He took him to jail for running away.
3-0 out of 5 stars Beware of offensive language and subject matter
This is a glimpse into Paulsen's 16th summer, when he left his drunken parents to pursue life on his own.He takes work as a laborer in the beet fields where he befriends Mexican workers and learns to hunt pigeons with his bare hands, and later does farm work, joins the crew of a traveling carnival, and learns about lust from an older, much more experienced woman.
