1-0 out of 5 stars busy, wordy and uninspiring
I got this book for my foster teens but tossed it in the recycling bin instead. The book is full of chatter; the authors never get to the point.Plus all the illustrations, boxes and fonts, which I guess are supposed to be hip, give you a headache. I did plog through this quagmire long enough to confirm the authors weren't saying anything that would inspire a kid, so it's just as well they slathered it with window dressing. The book dies have a catchy cover, which I assume is designed to attract parents, not kids.Heck, I bought it.

4-0 out of 5 stars bit much for my 12 year old
My 12 year old got bored with it, she's probably too young for this book.I am hoping she will pick it up in a year or so. I thought it was interesting and usefull.

4-0 out of 5 stars The 7 HABITS of Highly Effective TEENS
This book: The 7 HABITS of Highly Effective TEENS, included many wonderful/helpful ideas, wich i used and enjoyed on my own. This book is what i call a guidance book. That helps in my eyes young teens who have problems in highly effective areas. This book basically shows you how to develope good habbits, it makes you become a better person, working on your personality and bad habits. the author gave you his fathers seven habbits to success in all parts of life. The author Sean Covey, put it in a fun and easy way to understand the point of this wonderful book. This book was actually a slight help to both me and my mother. I learned to work things out with her, and agree on things easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comparing the 2 U.S. Textbooks...
One dilemma students, residents, fellows and attendings may have is deciding which of the three english language child psych textbooks to read. This book is more comprehensive than the other American textbook, the American Psychiatric Textbook of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and is a more sophisticated read. For those looking for more depth and a reference this is the one.If you want speed, a more general overview, and an easier read on the eyes choose the other one.The typeface here is smaller (and so in fact its wordcount is much greater, maybe one and a half to twice that of the American Textbook). This book offers more in the way of material beyond the basics of diagnosis and treatment, such as in depth material about genetics and neurodevelopment or a number of chapters covering allied professions or closely related fields (school, legal, international issues, etc,).If your goal is to make it thru a textbook, in your training say, you'll need stamina for this one. (Know thyself: if you're geek enough to consider plowing through a whole textbook, then you'll be more satisfied after reading this one; but if you think you might waver, there is more chance of making it through the other one.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Child Psychiatry Review
After a considerable search to find a professional level, readable, up-to-date Child and Adolescent Reference, Lewis' work fully meets or exceeds my expectations. Articles draw on expert opinion, research findings and clinical practice to give encyclopediac references. A very wide scope. The only comparable volumes are the Comprehensive Textbook of PsychiatryVII, and that reference is not child-centered but rather adult-focused.This volume excels in clarity of presentation even as it delivers extensiveand thoughtful clinical/theoretical material. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup for everyone!
This book was very inspiring, and informative on many matters in the life of teens. I thought this book was great and not only had fun reading it, but I also learned from it. I learned mistakes of other people, and many great lessons of life. While some stories were sad, others were cute, and happy. There are a wide variety of different stories that all contribute to the overall greatness of the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Consider for a First Communion gift
I have had trouble finding a Bible for my 8-year-old goddaughter that seemed thoroughly Catholic, age-appropriate in its added features and artwork, and in a kid-readable translation.I wanted something that would bridge the gap between the illustrated Bible story collections that are great for new readers, and the teen editions, whose added features are too mature. I discovered this Breakthrough Bible and purchased it as a gift for her First Communion.I have looked through it carefully. I am very pleased with the approach.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great Bible for Roman Catholic youth
I've always been a fan of the Good News Bible, a modern English translation that is easy to understand but which, unlike some modern translations, also employs dignified religious language to communicate its important message. Especially nice from a Roman Catholic perspective, this translation bears an Imprimatur. The Imprimatur is basically a green light from the Catholic heirarchy (in this case from the Most Rev. William H. Keeler, DD) saying that the text is acceptable for Catholics to read. This is a peace-of-mind factor that should help make Catholic parents and teachers feel comfortable sharing this translation with the young people in their care. Also comforting is the fact that this "Catholic edition" of the Good News Translation includes ALL of the books that constitute the biblical canon for Catholics, not just the 66 books that Protestants consider to be Scripture. This means young people can read about the piety of people from the "intertestamental" period, heroes and heroines of the faith like Tobit, Tobias, Sarah, Judith, Judas Maccabees and his brothers, and Susanna. They can also access the rich wisdom of the Wisdom of Solomon and Sirach (Ecclesiasticus). This edition of the Good News Bible includes the many charming and timeless line drawing illustrations of the Swiss artist Annie Vallotton that have been a part of most editions of this translation ever since the New Testament was first published in 1966.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Bible for Tweeners
I have a tweener living in my home and I've finally discovered a wonderful biblical resource just for him. "Tweeners" are a subset of youth, typically between ages 9 and 13.Your typical tweener feels like he is too old for things like ordering off of the children's menu or reading from a children's picture bible. However most of the "youth" bibles I've reviewed may contain issues tweeners are not ready emotionally to digest or understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on children's drawings in the last decade
Bravo to this author for bringing together a wealth of material on children's drawings in a clear and readable way. Professionals as well as lay people will enjoy this book; I recommend it to parents also. Pictures are marvelous!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I have recently completed the book in question and found it extremely helpful. It provided the basics that I can build on to understand children's drawings and perhaps children in general. I,at least have afundamental idea of what to look for and how to interpret what is presentedto me by a child. This book will not make one an over night expert onchildren's drawing (that takes time) but it does provide simple andunderstandable direction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Snapshot in Time
If I would have read this book when it came out in 2000, I probably would have been completely blown away by it.As it is, in 2006, it is still a pretty good read.
2-0 out of 5 stars Can you guess what generation the author's kids are
No doubt the 4th turning was a refreshing revelation. And the more dated predecessor Generations was a great secondary read. From that I gathered there was a sort of synergistic relationship with each skipped generation.Boomers relating to GI generation and Silent relating to the 13th generation, simply stated, a reciprocating bond of grandparents and their grandchildren.Parents sure didn't like the antics and conduct of their children but they sure love those amazing grandchildren .So it all makes sense that we get this tertiary and purely subjective read from Howe about what essentially are his darling grandchildren.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Book
I read the Millenials Rising book and I have to say that I found that a lot of the things that were said in this book to be very dated and, for the most part, not revelant to today's teenagers and young adults. One thing that I've noted is that a lot of things have happened since the publication of this book, 9/11, the war in Iraq, etc. and it doesn't jibe with me that the authors stated that the entertainment the Millenials enjoy are "squeaky clean" which doesn't explain the popualrtiy of subsequent shows such as "Chappelle's Show", or "Boondocks" both of which are highly controversial.

4-0 out of 5 stars A new perspective
This book helped the situation with my 17 yr old son. A lot of what is in this book goes directly against everything I've ever thought about parenting and it was scary for me at first, but I was desprate and we've had some positive changes because of these techniques. It took a few months, but he's back in school (he was ditching frequently), passing his classes (he was failing them all) and coming home on time every night (he was usually late or wouldn't come home at all).Basically, I've been trying to parent my teenager as if he were still a child. This book helped me to understand that it is natural for teenagers to become independent and, in fact, becoming independent is what they are supposed to be doing. The problem has been that I have been trying to direct my son to go in what I see as the right direction, and so the only way he can feel independent is to choose something different than what I want, even when that means making bad choices.Instead, this book advised me to let him find his own choices, within the boundaries of not taking advantage of me.It was scary, and I had my doubts (I felt like I was copping-out, giving up, taking the easy way out, etc) but this book has definitely helped our situation.Plus, now I feel like a person again instead of a warden.
5-0 out of 5 stars restore your sanity -- great parenting book!
This is probably the most helpful book on parenting I have ever read.I gave up on parenting books about 5 years ago when I realized the cookie-cutter approaches were not easily applied to my (and my son's) non-cookie-cutter lives!I purchased this book based on a review of a different book, where this book was recommended instead.I am really glad I did because from the very first exercise, it improved my whole outlook on my life with my teen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Only self-help book that ever helped
My ex-wife and I read this book almost 20 years ago, when our two kids were teenagers. Our daughter, the eldest, was acting up (and out)--breaking curfew, staying out, experimenting with different substances, generally going through a volatile adolescence--normal "individuating," it turned out (thank God), but it was driving her mother and me crazy because we lived apart and both worked full-time. Two employed adults are no match for one teenager intent on getting her way. We were at the end of our tethers trying to keep tabs on her. Somehow we found out about HOW TO DEAL WITH YOUR ACTING UP TEENAGER. We both read it, decided it made sense and was worth a try, and had a family meeting with both our kids. We told them we wanted to try a new way of parent-kid relations that basically boiled down to, mutual respect. When we told them we were going to stop trying to control them--ground them, harass them about schoolwork and grades, etc.--they looked at us suspiciously. Was this some kind of trick? Some sort of parental sting operation? No, no, we assured them, we were on the level. And it worked. Our daughter stopped driving us crazy, we stopped driving her crazy, and relations improved. I can say unequivocally that this is the only self-help book that has ever actually helped me (and I've read a few). I recommend it without qualification. The authors, as I recall, were parents themselves as well as psychologists, and brought both their practical and academic experience to bear. Bless them both. I still tell people about this book when I hear about problems with adolescence, and am glad it's still available. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has changed our lives.
We recently took our 4 year old to a psychologist to be evaluated for social/emotional/behavior problems. He recommended that we implement a token economy system. While searching for information on token economy systems for kids, I stumbled upon this book. I liked that in addition to philosophical discussion about children with behavior problems it also gave you a ton of practical advice. I use this book as a manual. It has completely turned our 4 year around. I believe that if I had read it two years ago, we never would have seen these behavior problems. His advice is clear, simple, and works.Thank you Dr. Barkley!

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatBook!
This is truely an easy to read, step-by-step book.Explaining first the teenager's brain and thinking and what stresses a teenager has in their life, then going on to reasons for drug use, and practical, tangible ways to deal with it.This is a great book for any parent of a teenager to read, whether or not they have found their child trying drugs. It is a great "heads up" informative sourcebook.I esp liked the section on what special emotional needs that teens are looking to have fulfilled during adolescence. It is really helpful to read that as a parent of any teenager.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author Survival Meditations for Parents of Teens
It's so important for parents to DO SOMETHING when they discover their teen using alcohol or other drugs. This no-nonsense approach is one of the best I've seen, and I've been counseling for over 20 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Know a drug using teen? Read this book--You can help!
Of all the books I've read on the subject of teenagers and drug/alcohol abuse, this is by far the best. The authors clearly spell out exactly why you're right to be worried and how to help. They explain how to conduct an"intervention" to cut through the teen's denial thatdrugs/alcohol is a problem for her or him.By presenting treatment optionsand contracts as her or his "choices," parents and others canalso give up the sense of fear that leads to ineffectual efforts to controlsomeone else's drinking or drug use.Once you let go and realizethat--just as the teen you care about has a choice (including using)--youhave a choice to impose consequences that range from mild to severe.Thebook is oddly reassuring and direct.A must-read for any parent or friendof a substance using teen. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read
This book is very hard to read. There are citations throughout the text, and the information is not divided into many sections. The text is small, there are no graphics, key words or chapter summaries. Its a lot of valuable infomation, if you can keep your eyes open long enough to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, but advanced text
I use this text for my graduate class in child behavior disorders. I also used the first edition. In terms of level, it falls at the very top of the spectrum. It is by far the most complete and rigorously empirical text available.Discussion is sophisticated and thorough. In fact, it is almost possible to use this text without primary source supplements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is by far the best self-help book for girls that I have ever come across. It addresses issues--some very difficult--that pre-teen and teenage girls are faced with today.I thought that every chapter was sensitive and well-written.My 14 year old daughter thought the chapters on body image, anxiety and insomnia made her feel better about herself and more in control of her life.I thought that the last chapter, on lesbian teens, was appropriate and helpful as it showed that most girls are not gay, and that tolerance for others who are different is important. My 12 year old daughter found this reassurring as she was beginning to worry that she was a lesbian because of something she read in a magazine. This book is a must-read for every adolescent girl and her parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but deals with some tough issues
My 14 year old daughter enjoyed most of the book, however the last chapter about what to do if you like someone of the same sex was a little "gross" for her.She isn't sexually active and found some of the issue a little too explective.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Look at Adolescent Culture
This book presents a comprehensive view of adolescent psychology. In the first half of the book the author, F. Philip Rice, includes a chapter describing such common adolescent tehories as those of Piaget and Erikson, and presents the strengths and weaknesses of each theory. He also devotesa chapter to adolescent physical development. From reading the first fewchapters, it seems like a standard college textbook. What sets this bookapart from many textbooks dealing with this subject, however, is its focuson diversity issues and adolescent culture.Read more

Editorial Review

Adolescent girls today face the issues girls have always faced: "Who am I?" and "Who do I want to be?" Unfortunately their answers, now more than ever before, revolve around the body rather than the mind, heart, or soul. "The body is at the heart of the crisis that [Carol] Gilligan, [Mary] Pipher, and others describe.... The fact that American girls now make the body their central project is not an accident or a curiosity," writes Brumberg, "it is a symptom of historical changes that are only now beginning to be understood." The historical photos, thorough research, and political even-handedness make this a book of worth and sincerity. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair Attempt to Explain a Growing Problem
I bought this book because I see how girls/young women stuggle to achieve a very unrealistic ideal of beauty and how middle aged women stuggle to hang on to what they had as young women. As I approach 50, I know I am expected to stay trim, fit and muscular in spite of the fact that my body struggles mightly against it, especially since pregnancy and child birth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why "beautiful on the inside" doesn't seem to matter anymore
What happened to American girls, to women, over the past hundred years, that caused a quantum shift in how they present themselves to the world?
1-0 out of 5 stars Unworthy of "American" in its title
The Body Project provides very selective leeway into the societal effects of African-American adolescent girls and their personal body projects. The main focus of this book is on the evolution of the white middle-class adolescent girl throughout American history. African-American and Jewish girls are mentioned briefly in a few chapters, while other ethnic groups are simply never discussed. Are these other various ethnic groups not worthy of their equal place in Brumberg's book?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and well written
Here's a book that should be on the desk of every person in marketing or advertising any place on the globe. Ms. Moses has penned a fascinating first-person account, describing the burgeoning teen market. The future for all multinationals will be trying to market into the Third World's teen market. Elissa Moses shows you how.

5-0 out of 5 stars teenagers need to read this!
teenagers need to read this to find out just how stupid they are. we all go through this moronic period in life, when market forces prey on our immature and unsuspecting minds. it usually starts at 15, but for some itfinishes at 30. we are preyed upon by a constant bombardment of commercialswhich subliminally discourage us from investing in our future. MTV warpsour brains and we forgo our savings on overvalued and hyped up trinketsthat help us conform to nonconformity. we end up with racks of CDs and acuboard full of designer shoes, but no downpayment for our apartment whenwe realize that life is serious. there aught to be a law against this! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Did not like
I did not like the book.It did have some interesting points to consider, but it did not seem like discipline to me.I am more of a Love and Logic fan.I think kids cannot always see the natural consequences of their own behavior (or don't care) until far into the future and must sometimes have consequences imposed upon them, which this book says not to do.I just don't agree with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The authors map out clear, effective and proven strategies for rewarding parenting in this excellent well-written guide. An imaginative approach was called for when my 16 year old boy Jonathan threatened to barricade himself in his bedroom using just twigs, leaves, and his own spittle and dung, and this guide provided just that. There's nothing wrong with setting parameters, the authors say, just as long as that are not arbitrary or capricious and they are clearly articulated - and for crying out loud why should he be allowed to act like a nesting African Hornbill under my roof?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice for Raising a Capable Teen
My daughter is just becoming a teenager, and I am glad I purchased this book at this time.It has helped me to identify my enabling behaviors that maintain her dependence on me. I am now working to empower my daughter tobecome more independent in her decision making. This book is presented ina very logical format and the suggestions are easily implemented.I havenever used punishment as a motivator with my daughter and now feelvindicated in that choice.I encourage parents of teens to get this bookfor a refreshingly alternative approach to interacting with our teens -treating them like the individuals that they are.Good luck! ...
