5-0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing
I was given the amazing opportunity to spend time with Virginia Fry while living in Vermont this past winter. My 14 year old sister had recently passed away after her stuggle against cancer. I was completely lost, and met with Virginia several times. She is one of the most amazing people that I've ever been priviledged enough to have come into my life. This book enveloped every part of her ideas and extremely heartfelt suggestions to get you through the most horrible times. She is such an amazing person and this book reflects that to the fullest extent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
This book details the real life story of a boy at fourteen that decided he wnated to kill himself. After he tries he decides he does not want to go through with it and he gets himself all wet to put the fire out. After this he goes through great detail of the year after the sucide attmept and his inner thoughts about the whole suicide. I really enjoyed reading this book and I believe that this book is good for many people to read to truly understand all of the pain that can come from commiting suicide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good description of teen depression
As someone who has lived with depression for many years and who as a teenager has also tried to hurt myself, I felt that Runyon did a good job of describing the elusive and often non-descript feelings of teen depression--including his inability (post-suicide attempt) to talk with his parents and psychiatric professionals about why he set himself on fire. While some might want this book to be the rememdy for depressed teens everywhere, it is not a self-help book for teens disguised as memoir. There are no answers for troubled teens.Rather, it is a memoir.Even without providing any answers, it is still a good way to open the topic of teen suicide and depression. I loaned the book to my mother who said it did help her understand a little more what I was feeling when I was a teen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaching and learning tool...
I recommend it as a good read for adolescents and adults and as a great teaching tool for middle school and older students. I plan to read excerpts to my students this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and true
Knowing nick in life did not take away the impact this book had on me. It tells his story and does it well. I commend Nicks mother for her courage in taking the time to write this story to share with everyone. I can only hope that this story has as much of an impact on people as Nick did in life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sadness? or happiness?
The book, the death is hard to live with is collection of personal Narratives about teenagers dealing with death. The author, Janet Bode interviews teenagers who have experienced a loss and puts together their stories in one book. The main conflicts or theme throughout the book is internal conflict with the teens trying to decide how to cope with their situations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Teens learning to cope with death.
In the book "Death is Hard to Live With", they have a lot of true short stories. Most of the stories are written by teenagers explaining the death of a relative or close friend. For instance, one girl lost her mother at the age of twelve. As the years went on she felt worseand worse about her life, she then went to see a psychiatrist to keep herin line. Many kids that shared their stories were telling about the helpthey either had or need. After a hard death, especially as a teen, youusually start feeling hopeless in your life which could lead to suicide. That is the last answer doctors want to hear as a result. This book is tomotivate you to change your life into a better situation after a death hasoccured.Learning to cooperate with death can be hard and challenging attimes, but reading this book points out many different ways to cope withit. There are different alternatives other than hurting or harmingoneself. This book provides true stories that may be similar to asituation you are going through.I really enjoyed this book, and thoughtit would be great for others. It was nice because I could relate to someof the stories that were told.It was fun to compare the different choiceswe took to get through the situations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Get This Book for the Grieving Teen in Your Life
I work with grieving teens and whenever possible, I give them a copy of this book.Every page has a gem that can help them sort through their feelings and experiences. All of the children have told me this book really helps them.It is written in large print with pictures, poems, and sayings throughout making it extremely accessible for a grieving teen (or adult, for that matter). It is one of the very best books written for grieving teens.I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you to Earl Hipp
I just wanted you to know that both my teens have read your book, "Help for the Hard Times".It was the only book on loss that really made them feel like it spoke to their true feelings.I can't thankyou enough for writing such a wonderful book.I am recently widowed, anduntil I discovered your book, I was desperately searching.I bought anextra copy and donated it to my school district.I am a MSW graduatestudent at Fordham University.I eventually hope to work in the publicschool system. You can bet your book will be on the shelf along with myother resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for adults too!
I recently read the book, Help for the Hard Times, Getting Through Loss." I am a divorced mother of two great kids 13 and 18. I was divorced after 21 years of marriage. I went looking for a book I could giveto my kids to help hem deal with their own issues of loss revolving aroundthe divorce. I went through my own hard times, and in fact am just nowafter 3 years reaching the healing times. Unfortunately, my kids grief isjust now showing up in ways that until now went unrecognized by them or me.I have to say that this book was very enlightening to me and therefore justcan't loose with my kids. I will read it together with my 13-year-old, andgive it to my 18-year-old to read on her own. This kind of nuts and boltshelp can be very helpful to people of all ages, not just the kids. Sometimes we have to go back to the basics in order to heal an overloadedloss pot, and recognizing the stages is a great start. Read more
