3-0 out of 5 stars great message, not so great execution
this book has a great premise: Emako Blue is a teenage girl, uncommonly friendly, with a beautiful voice.she "was supposed to be a star", but is suddenly and senselessly killed in a drive-by shooting meant for her jailbird brother (and no, this is not a spoiler, we learn this in the first chapter).the book talks about Emako from the points of view of four kids who knew her.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Popular Book
I teach 7th grade and try to stock the most current quality books I can find.Emako Blue NEVER stays on the shelf. After I read it and shared it with my class, it went straight out the door with someone. As soon as I announce it's been turned in, someone else grabs it, literally within seconds.Boys and girls alike have read this book, and no one has not loved it. It is one of the few books I've seen that appeals to all groups. This book is truthful, current, and especially touching. It addresses friendship, fairness, hopes, and sorrow, all of which are so important to teens. I will always have one in my classroom library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and real
EMAKO BLUE is a strong second novel for Brenda Woods and a worthy follow-up to her award-winning debut, THE RED ROSE BOX.

Editorial Review

"We used to sit on the playground and plan our weddings, tracing long flowing white gowns in the sand with sticks. Then, in sixth grade--I can't remember the day it happened--a stone rolled in front of our futures. We dropped the sticks and our dreams and started planning our funerals instead." This sad, resigned voice, wise beyond her teen years, is that of Kata, a girl who has just lost her best friend, Ana, to gang violence.Ana and Kata, inseparable since fourth grade, are on their way home from winning another underground dance competition, when Ana reveals she is pregnant. Although Ana is worried about her mother's reaction, both girls know this is good news--now she can finally "face out" and escape the gang life in which the two have become hopelessly entangled. Moments later, Ana is killed in a drive-by shooting, and Kata must cope with the loss of her other half ("it took two of us to make one person"), as well as her helpless, alcoholic mother, her murderous hunger for revenge against Ana's killers, and her desire to leave gang life forever.Read more

This is a great book. It gives you a look at how gang life really is, and how hard it is to escape the life. I really enjoyed reading it, but i didn't like the ending, you'll see why when or if you read it. Out of all these types of books i still recomind Go Ask Alice....

Being a mom of three children i read many books like this one. Although most of them are true stories and journals. I have to say that this is a good read, i read the whole book in one day, it was one that i didn't want to put down. This is a story about two girls that grow up together and are jumped into a gang and how it changes their lives. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised
I picked up this book as a quick, teen-chick lit read. I wasn't expecting much. I was surprised at the message the book givesm as well as the range of topics covered by the book. Aside from the obvious "obesity" topic, and the related topics of both eating disorders and fad dieting, it also discusses date rape, dating, parent-child communication, death, peer pressure, friendships, and an impressive portrayal of the teenage psyche.

5-0 out of 5 stars funny and real
Virginia Shreves feels like she comes from the perfect family, with one blemish-- her.Her father is a top executive whose favorite hobby is ogling stick-thin women, her mother is a successful psychologist and a diet and exercise fanatic, and her two older siblings are blond, wafer-thin, and all-around perfect.Virginia, on the other hand, shops in plus sizes, consumes junk food daily, and adheres to the "Fat Girl Code of Conduct."As if all this isn't bad enough, her best friend just moved to Walla Walla (the complete opposite side of the country!), and she's afraid of her new "friend" Froggy Welsh the Fourth (his real name) will look up her shirt and never come back. Then an unexpected phone call changes everything, and Virginia's family no longer seems quite so perfect. This book will hit home for anyone who has ever felt self-conscious or has had to re-evaluate the choices they were making.

A favorite of the high school girls I read with, this book is not quite as funny as the title suggests. Yes, Mackler is hilarious, but she manages to touch a lot of major teen issues, from date rape to eating disorders. I do not come across as many reluctant girl readers, but when I do I always pull out a copy of this book. Not appropriate for younger kids, though. I myself am the same age as annie (in the diary), so just reading about the things that she goes through and how fast she is forced to grow up, really shows me how careful we must be and we cant just go through life thinking "it wont happen to me".

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good!
I don't even own this book yet but my friend received it for her birthday and I read just a little portion, already it has helped me. I am planning on buying it and I definately recommend it for teen girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, insightful, AND fun!
I HIGHLY reccomend this book for anyone who has a child in their teens--guy or girl. Although it is geared toward young females, the insight and subject matter provides a great read for any young person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it.
Meg Cabot has written some pretty awesome books. Look at 'The Princess Diaries' for instance. But this series has got to be the best series she's ever written. Susannah is one of her best female heroines yet - strong, headstrong, brave - and at the same time a little loony and stupid. I love Jesse. I think we all want an encounter with a ghost like him, no?
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever!
This is absolutely my favorite book. I have never been a big reader, but I picked up this book one day. It usually takes me at least a month to finish a book this long, but I finished The Mediator in two days! I couldn't put it down! Meg Cabot, in my opinion, is one of the best teen writers out there. The reader feels as if they are involved in the story, and as if they know the charachters.I strogly reccoment this book to anyone between the ages of 12-20.

Editorial Review

One day in her apartment in Reno, Bernadette heard a pitiful sound in the hallway. She opened the door a crack and saw a young woman standing there in her raincoat, her bare legs spattered with dried mud, holding a crying baby wrapped in a blanket. The baby was Heidi, and they had come from the almost-empty apartment next door for help. Heidi's Mama can't tend her week-old child because she has, as Heidi later says, "a bum brain," so Bernadette steps in and cares for them both tenderly. Mama says her name is "So Be It," but with her twenty-three-word vocabulary, this is all the information she can give Bernadette.Read more

I think So B. It is a great book.It is kinda of cool that Heidi wants to find out her history. If I was her, I would too.But it is pretty sad that Mama dies. When I got finished reading it, I felt like there should be more, but I would never be able to think of such wonderful ideas for another end. My friend Emily, felt strange when she ended it.So did I.All the surprising things like Mr. Hill being her grandfather when he was so mean on the phone.I thought for sure he was just an old grumpy man. Elliot, I thought was Mama's husband and mama just ran away with her baby.If you haven't read it, I think you should. That is my opinion.

This book reminds me of myself. A 15 year old girl writes in a diary about the things she goes through in her life. She deals with popularity, boys, friends, and her family. She thinks of herself as a shallow girl. Which she's not. Jenny Lambert is the most popular girl in her school. She finally talked to her in the Honor Society club. Her friends are some what good to her. Except they cut to deal with there problems. She starts to do the same thing as her friends. She ends up getting addicted to cutting. There's one boy in her school that she really likes. But his really popular so she thinks he wouldn't like her. But they become friends, and he starts to have feelings for her. She has a really hard time with her family. Her mom starts to worry about her and snoops through her room. She finds the razors and things. She wonders if she cuts and confronts her about it. I would recommend this book to teenagers because they might be able to relate to it. I really liked this book; it reminded me about my life and the things that have happened in my life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad but i wouldn't recommend it
Primarily and most improtantly, homophobia wasn't not the true reason behind shaping my ture opinion about this book which i coudn't bear readingtill the end. Although Alex Sanchez does a great job in revealing an introspection of the three protagonists Nelson, Jason, and Kyle including their feelings about their homosexuality and their caring about the view from which society would regard them. Instead of bringing forth the disliked subject of homophobia in American society, Sanchez unreasonably talks sublty about this important issues by narrating the story of Jason's coming out. It is surprrising and hardly believable to accept the courtesy by which Jason's schoolmates regarded his coming out and that their role-model is homosexual. In actual life, it's rarely if never oucurring that a large amount of people would easily accept among them someone who according to religion and common rule, is somehow different. In addition to the unusal attitude of the town people, Jason't being interviewed and acclaimed by many for having the courage of coming out is an extreme prasing of being homosexual. Again, i am not a homophobe and i can prove this by expressing how much i liked Rainbow Boys in talking about a negative thing (homophobia) in American history and in it's valuale message to encourage youth in general and homosexuals in particular to accept their fauts and face society.

5-0 out of 5 stars There Are No Surprises Here
Nelson, Kyle and Jason whom we met in RAINBOW BOYS are back again, pretty much as we knew them. Well, Nelson has gone from dying his hair lemon-lime to "flame-blue," an appropriate color since he is certainly the flamer of these three. He is the outrageous one who never had a chance of being in anybody's closet, even if he had wanted to. Kyle is still the shy one on the swim team who can "pass" if left alone. Jason, of course, is the high school jock equally attractive to both young men and women.
3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better......
Rainbow Boys is a waaaay better book than this.I think the thing that hit me the most was how different this book was from the first book.It had almost no cussing or sexual jokes which were abundant in the first one. That small detail was important because it made it realistic. To have highschool kids not cussing or making the crude jokes was lame because all kids do. In Rainbow Boys Nelson made some of the funniest jokes and said the best lines in this book he comes off as dumb and whiney instead of whiney but cute.It makes no sense why he would want to have sex so badly with Jeremy and that shouldnt have taken up the whole book.Nelson could obviously get another guy and especially after he was afraid he had got HIV.The way he didn't take getting it seriously was dumb too.He was funny and interesting in the first book what happened??

I liked this book it was hilarious , and the situations were cool too. But through like half the book she crying and whining and stuff and then she makes out with like two guys and gets her heart broken , she just puts herself out there you know . But all in all it was good.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is like cotton candy...
...fluffy, sweet, sticky, hilariously fun, and bad in really large doses. However, in small doses, this book and the rest of its series are absolutely fantastic. (I laughed so hard when Georgia's "boy entrancers" stuck together.) I would advise that one not read all six - going on seven - of these books one after the other. Georgia's shallowness begins to annoy after a while, but individually, each of the books are riotously funny and a great quick read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Boyfriend List
This book is great for all you girls out there who think you're "lepers" It really showed that things aren't always as bad as they seem, and a lot of big fights come from terrible misunderstandings. I liked how this book most of the boys mentioned in the Boyfriend List are somehow connected, and I also liked how realistic this was, compared to some other cheesy teen novels out there today.

The additional title of THE BOYFRIEND LIST is (15 guys, 11 shrink appointments, 4 ceramic frogs and me, Ruby Oliver). It's very enlightening, entertaining, and oh-so-paramount to the book. This is the life and times of nearly sixteen-year old Ruby Oliver, former girlfriend of Jackson, former best friend of Kim, former semi-popular Sophomore high-school girl. Now just a girl with panic attacks, a Xerox-copied "Boyfriend List" circulating through school, and a shrink named Doctor Z.

5-0 out of 5 stars kids at work
This is a nonfiction photographic essay book that will touch any reader's heart. Mr. Freedman seems to know the facts and life of Mr. Hine very well. There is an extensive bibliography at the end of the book as wee. The information at the end seemed hard to believe but true. The book is only 11 years old so the facts aren't that dated. There are many saddening facts in this book. It reveals the truths about child labor in the text and photos.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hate school? Your life could be so much worse...
Freedman has collected dozens of black and white photographs taken by Lewis Hine during the first decades of the twentieth century. Hine worked as an investigational photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). The NCLC wanted the United States government to pass laws concerning child labor, and thought that photos of the work children did would be more effective persuaders than mere speeches and statistics. 4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag of Beauty, Flowers, Myth and Pretentious Problems, Flaws
No, this isn't a perfect book series. It can be weighed down by pretentious storylines and attempts to address serious issues. (ex. Weetzie's attempts to get a child cause major rifts worthy, for a while, of Oprah.Dirk and Duck, one of the series most prominent couples, become a spring board for heavy subjects of bigotry and AIDS.)Melodrama will sometimes take the place of real emotion.Weetzie, the main character through out the first book at least, is mostly defined as an "original person" because of her part in a punk culture that will eventually become to mainstream.Observations made in the series are often superficial.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book Ever
From the moment I laid eyes on this book I knew it would change my literary life forever. From the stunning cover to the final paragraph, this book is a delight for the mind and the senses... It's a book takes you into a magical world with brilliant and amazing characters... Also some supernatural beings, their in here too... And oddly enough it's a book that makes you hungry, hungry for delicious sounding foods and hungry for life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sparkly and Fabulous Fiction for YAs and Others
This is a book which you will either love to pieces or find intensely aggravating.I adored it.It's a compendium of books that deal with Weetzie Bat, her boyfriend Secret Agent Man, and their extended kooky family.I love the quirkiness of the characters and the lush language Block uses to describe their surroundings.I read this as an adult, but I would have been even more utterly thrilled if I had received this as a teenager when I had no idea such a world could exist. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Indulgent
Another excuse for teenage laziness. Arnett does not back up his argument strongly enough. Could be a stage that adults go in and out of multiple times over the life course rather than restricted to after adolescence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very engaging and informative book
The biggest surprise about Emerging Adulthood is that it wasn't published by a trade press -- it should have been. Although also chock full of great research, this is a very accessible and engaging read. The interviews with young people are suburb, as are the illustrations and the surveys on important issues. The "Twixter" phenomenon of young people taking longer to find their way has been around for awhile, and this is the first book to really capture it in all its facets. The chapter on religion alone is worth the price of the book -- it cuts through media hype about growing fundamentalism to show that actually, most young people aren't all that religious. Parents or teachers, buy this book if you want to understand your twentysomething kids. Twentysomethings, buy this book to see that you are not alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars a critical guide to understanding years 18 to 25
This book is a critical guide. It is useful for understanding the experiences, the challenges, and the potential of those who have left adolescence and have not yet entered adulthood.

Editorial Review

Everybody's favorite sass-mouth first grader comes back for her 23rd installment in this popular series . This time around, Junie B. fends off a stomach virus and earns a starring role in the Parent's Night play. The action starts with a bang--or rather, a "SPLAT-O!"--as one of Junie B's classmates falls victim to a stomach virus right there in class: "It was the disgustingest thing I ever saw. Also, the odor was not delightful." But only after everyone improvises their own virus defenses ("We held our noses tight with our fingers. And we didn't breathe for the whole rest of the morning") does the real excitement in Room One begin. Poor, put-upon Mr. Scary has planned a special event for Parent's Night--a play about Christopher Columbus. Junie B. lands a plum role ("I want to be the Pinta! Cause the Pinta was the fastest ship! And the fastest ship is the winner ship. And the winner ship is the Read more

This book is about Junie B. Jones and a play.Junie is a ship in the play. The play was about Christopher Columbus and Junie says he didn't discover America.Read the rest of the book to find out what happens!

4-0 out of 5 stars Confusing - in a good way!
I think that junie B. Jones realy made it sound like she was going to be the star of the play! But then everything turned around, when her part was picked she thought she got a dumb old boat. And then William sneezed in the middle of the show.It was confusing because too many things were going on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B., First Grader Shipwrecked
I teach first grade so Junie B. is a fan of all of us.I just finished reading Shipwrecked, the newest Junie B. book in the series. This series continues to be entertaining for both my students and myself. The author does an outstanding job of placing everyday children's issues in an exciting way. These books have made my students realize the importance of helping each other and thinking of others needs before their own.In Shipwrecked it covers the topics of germs, sharing, and teamwork in a way that everyone can enjoy and learn from.I will continue to read Junie B for years to come and enjoy reading the new books as they are published. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars There is nothing underground about this book at all.
Basso's book is intended for younger teenagers, but it promotes abstinence, and is not reality based at all. As a high school teacher, he has to be conservative in this society, but today's teenagers will not accept his message, nor should they. The book is really sex-negative, and as such, it is not very relevant to today's teenagers, especially those 15-19.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
Michael Basso does a masterful job of taking a sensitive topic and breaking it down into laymans terms for broad understanding. He uses science, reality, ethical values, and an obvious profound knowledge of what teens are looking for, what they need, and how best to communicate these messages and lessons.
5-0 out of 5 stars Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality
A useful guide about contraceptives, barrier methods, waiting/abstinence, and general questions surrounding sexuality. This book presents itself from a teenage perspective and can be useful to reacing out to this demographic, especially when it comes to explaining things that parents find it difficult to talk about. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Living The Truth
Louis Rodriquez writes the truth! I know I lived in the Lomas during the time Louis writes about being in Garvey school and at Mark Keppel. I lived in Lomas from 1959 to 1972. Fortunately, I survived the madness in Lomas. This was our life as we knew it, the gangs, drugs, girls and of course the parties. It brings back memories of our life in the barrio L's...

5-0 out of 5 stars I read it, re-lived it and loved it!
Well written book by one of my favorite Authors.Louis is an awesome person who is committed to his work and community.Book can be used for anyone looking for a real life reference to the history of Chicano/a Gangs in Southern California.I read it, re-lived it and loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always Challanging
Many young people face the same perils Luis Rodriguez shares in this auto biographical coming-of-age story; some overcome these challanges, while others succumb. But, how many rise as far above them as Rodriguez has?
