5-0 out of 5 stars This book was so moving.
I read it as a teenager- and it moved me.
4-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup for everyone!
This book was very inspiring, and informative on many matters in the life of teens. I thought this book was great and not only had fun reading it, but I also learned from it. I learned mistakes of other people, and many great lessons of life. While some stories were sad, others were cute, and happy. There are a wide variety of different stories that all contribute to the overall greatness of the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Alternative Route to Men's Souls
Although the objective of reaching through to men's souls without the deception of artificial courtship to produce mere sexual access is admirable, there is a danger that women will be led to imagine that sexual independence of women may be acceptable to men.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Twenty-two year old recent college graduate Amber Madison has penned a non-fiction book about sex & sexuality that puts it on the line for young girls (and their parents). Nothing is off limits in Hooking Up-A Girls All-Out Guide to Sex and Sexuality (Prometheus Books). Amber starts with the basics (like describing the various sexual organs), and gets down to the details that some people may be apprehensive to ask about in conversation. From vaginal discharges, yeast infections, sexually transmitted diseases to pregnancy it's all here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for teens -- and their parents!
With the media bombardment of sex in our culture, reality and media imagery are often world's apart. This book is a chatty, enlightening window into the lexicon and concerns surrounding young people's sexuality today. Its also a great conversation starter with any teen.:-) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DELICIOUS JUICY READ....
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I READ THE WHOLE BOOK IN THREE DAYS! I LAUGHED, CRIED, AND MY JAW DROPPED A FEW TIMES. IT TRULY IS A JUICY READ. I RECCOMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY TEEN.
2-0 out of 5 stars Totally Not Real
It about rich kids doing whatever they want like sex and durgs. I doubt such a family would allow their kids to go around do things like that. Trust me, it's not worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Corruption of Adolescent's Minds
I will always read book reviews over the internet before buying any book again. I don't even want to explain what's in the book because it is completely worthless. I did not have any clue that this book was not intended for a 25-year-old lady. I really thought that this book was a story about the awful consequences of gossip on society, for instance, or a story about a girl who gets caught by her own evil actions after gossiping and spreading rumors around. I did not imagine that it was written in such an inappropriate way to support gossip and other immoral behaviors. Besides it's pointless and disrespectful, since it's supporting something that is totally not innocent. Defiantly, I would not recommend this book for young girls nor for 18 and up, because it does not have any useful bit of information. If people keep reading these kinds of books that corrupt young girls' minds, damages their intellectuality, people will ruin the world. Gossip girl will not help you be clever, impressive, genuine, or popular. Invest your time in a much constructive reads. ... Read more

I loved this book so much it teaches alot in 1 book!!!!! This book is 2 much 4 words...i just loved it!

4-0 out of 5 stars A-List 4: Tall Cool One
This book was very interesting, but not the best. First, I thought that Danny and Anna were gonna get together but he's in the beginning, and then he just disappears. Where did he go? I was also confused because this used to be kinda like a teenage soap opera and now this book was... a mystery in mexico. Different, but I should give Zoey Dean some credit for not writing the same old thing every book. But it was a great read, even though it was kinda different. The series is still awesome, and I still read the next book. So all is well, I'll just say it wasn't as great as the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, No Ben!
I was so happy! Finally obnixous Ben was gone! I loved when Sam and Anna got lost in the desert and found that house, but i also reallly wanted to know whos house it was. I loved how it wasn't all set in Beverly Hills and i loved all the descripiton. My favorite charcter was Lloyd because he was so werid. That drink that Sam and Anna drank that made them high is kind of like potscheen. ( Though i sure have never tried it.) I loved this book and you will too! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Profound, but profane
Looking for Alaska is a page turner. Did Alaska commit suicide or was her death a tragic accident? Why did she become so upset and drive off drunk in the middle of the night? The biggest question of all was Alaska's: "How will we ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering?" Pudge's answer to this question in his essay at the end of the book is profoundly true. For its mystery and truth, I loved this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like mother, like daughter
I read these books when I was growing up and was excited to come across them for my own daughter. My daughter, unlike me, does not enjoy reading however, she has read these books in record time!Another plus is that they are all on the "AR" lists that many schools require their students to read from.My daughter is 10 and they are all within the reading levels for the 4th -6th grades.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 Great Stories with a Message
I don't even remember if it was 40 or 45 years ago when I first started reading Judy Blume's books but I do remember the stories always seemed to touch on a subject I could relate to as a child.I didn't even hestitate or have to think twice about buying them for my son when he reached the 3rd grade. There are times when parents can't convince their child that other kids have the same problems they do and that's where Blume's stories can help. She reaches out to kids about divorce, religion, obesity, popularity, etc. and she does so in a light hearted manner, nothing too heavy. As for P. D. Paula and all of the people who found her review helpful; the titles of the books in the set are right there after the words Best of Blume. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not to be ignored
This book is a tiny slice of genius. It can't be judged by a descriptive birthing scene in the first chapter, or the descriptive "climax" toward the end. What it should be judged by is the wonderful writing, the spot-on capture of dialect, what it's like to live on a farm under rules that seem foreign to us - but that are explained through prose rather than preaching. We are allowed to see a young boy growing into a man, and the responsibilities he accepts at such a young age are remarkable. Today's children could take a lesson from 12-year old Robert Peck. Less video games, less television, more hard work (reading and learning is included here, not just farm work).
5-0 out of 5 stars "It will leave you better than it found you."
I quoted a reviewer from the jacket of the book, because this short novel is full of dignity and plain old goodness. It is a testament to simple living before there were video games and cell phones. It is about poor people who are rich in the blessings of life, and how they meet the challenges of being poor with integrity and self-reliance.This is not for those who read superficially or those who are interested in plot only.It is a gorgeous read, full of lessons to be learned.
1-0 out of 5 stars Why make young readers' lives more miserable than they already are?
Adults would never choose to read this garbage. It would be seen as masochistic [...] and too depressing to bother with. Raise an animal, get attached to it, but the reality of farm life is that if it can't successfully breed, you personally will have to butcher it. Heck, why should your dad do it for you, when we can reinforce that valuable childhood lesson of "Life sucks and then you die"?

4-0 out of 5 stars A good primer for younger teenagers.
This is a primer for younger teenagers. It is well written, although it needs to be updated in 2006. It is a textbook more than a think piece. It is a good starter book for parents and younger teenagers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Changing Bodies out of date
I was very disapointed with the book. Expanded third edition was deceiving because I thought it was new - my oversight. The book is out of date - I oversee a Center that teaches sex education and this was not helpful.

Editorial Review

It's 1906 and 16-year-old Mattie Gokey is at a crossroads in her life. She's escaped the overwhelming responsibilities of helping to run her father's brokedown farm in exchange for a paid summer job as a serving girl at a fancy hotel in the Adirondacks. She's saving as much of her salary as she can, but she's having trouble deciding how she's going to use the money at the end of the summer. Mattie's gift is for writing and she's been accepted to Barnard College in New York City, but she's held back by her sense of responsibility to her family--and by her budding romance with handsome-but-dull Royal Loomis. Royal awakens feelings in Mattie that she doesn't want to ignore, but she can't deny her passion for words and her desire to write. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my top 10!
Okay, when I first checked this book out of the library, one of my teachers scoffed at me. Apparently he had scanned a page and had seen cuss words. But when I began reading it, I fell it love with it, and finished it within the afternoon. Mattie, the main character is growing up in such a hard situation, in a time when women still had little rights. Mattie battles between settling down and going to college. I'll leave the ending a surprise, but it made me cry, the reason being because it ended just as much as the actual ending. It's centered around the death of Grace Brown, who had given Mattie a pack of letters to burn. Mattie reads though, and solves a murder. Mattie is such a real person, and Donnelly's words are so poetic. It created a whole new world for me, and I'll never forget this book. Although I would not suggest this book for those under 13 because of language and adult sequences, but everyone else deserves to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT TAKES A VILLAGE....
Matty Gokey is the sixteen year old narrator of this novel. With the 1906 murder of Grace Brown (also covered in Dreiser's "An American Tragedy) setting the stage for this tale that ultimately explores not only Graces murder, but the issues of poverty, racism, pregnancy, the perceived station of women in society, and the effects of death/loss on the human spirit.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This Gem Because of the YA Designation
I am not sure why this work is considered a young adult novel, because at the ripe old age of 55, I was intrigued by Donnelly'sauthentic, right-on-the-money, bulls-eye prose. The narrative chronicles the coming-of-age of young Mattie Gokey, who lives a hardscrabble rural life in the North Woods of the Adirondacks in the early 1900's. The novel functions as historical fiction, and it accurately pinpoints the poverty, racism, mores and gender issues of this era in this particular location.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on children's drawings in the last decade
Bravo to this author for bringing together a wealth of material on children's drawings in a clear and readable way. Professionals as well as lay people will enjoy this book; I recommend it to parents also. Pictures are marvelous!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I have recently completed the book in question and found it extremely helpful. It provided the basics that I can build on to understand children's drawings and perhaps children in general. I,at least have afundamental idea of what to look for and how to interpret what is presentedto me by a child. This book will not make one an over night expert onchildren's drawing (that takes time) but it does provide simple andunderstandable direction. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"Going all the way" is still a taboo subject in young adult literature. Judy Blume was the first author to write candidly about a sexually active teen, and she's been defending teenagers' rights to read about such subjects ever since. Here, Blume tells a convincing tale of first love--a love that seems strong and true enough to last forever. Katherine loves Michael so much, in fact, that she's willing to lose her virginity to him, and, as the months go by, it gets harder and harder for her to imagine living without him. However, something happens when they are separated for the summer: Katherine begins to have feelings for another guy. What does this mean about her love for Michael? What does this mean about love in general? What does "forever" mean, anyway? As always, Blume writes as if she's never forgotten a moment of what it's like to be a teenager. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a Great Read!
I managed to miss this one when I was reading Blume as a pre-teen...and since it's around that time of the year (banned book week), I decided to find out why it is that this book gets challenged so often...and yep, I can see why! It's a realistic look at young love, about how teens feel about love and sex and how emotionally crippling a romance can feel at that age...it doesn't pull any punches and presents a realistic and compelling story of young love that could have happened to any of us.I do see why some parents might not want this in libraries...but I personally would LOVE to see teens reading this...it presents an honest, open, and responsible look at teenage love and sex.I love that this goes one step further than that "forever" feeling and examines what happens when those same teenagers who pin their whole emotional future on one other person go away to college or for summer jobs (or both)...what happens when they are exposed to new people and experiences and how that changes what they thought would be forever!
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I just read it for the fifth or sixth time. Not sure what else to say that hasn't already been said.Basically it was entertaining, honest, enlightening, touching, and the break-up scene made me cry.Who hasn't gone through that?It reads so realistically, and quickly!I was so disappointed it was so short, I really wanted to see what happened after.Maybe Blume will write a sequel about Katherine in college called "Theo called."

1-0 out of 5 stars Love Story? No. Moral book? Not even.
I have heard people say that Blume was an amazing author. I read this book and was thouroughly let down. I thought it was going to be a love story but I was wrong. It is a sex book and is completely pointless. If Blume was trying to write a moral book then she was way off target.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
Georgia Nicholson is at it again in the newest installment of Louise Rennison's hilarious series about the trials and tribulations of a lovelorn British high school girl. STARTLED BY HIS FURRY SHORTS does not disappoint readers who have grown to love the quirky Georgia, her eccentric family, and her Ace Gang of best buddies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Let's go down the disco!
In this, the seventh book of the Georgia Nicholson series, Georgia finds herself in "the oven of luuurve" once again. At the end of the last book, Then He Ate My Boy Entrancers, Georgia had given the Italian Stallion, a.k.a. Masimo, an ultimatum: to be an exclusive couple.
5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh-till-you-fall-off-the-bed humor laced with slightly raunchy fun that will keep you reading long into the night!
Georgia Nicolson is not currently in a happy place regarding her love life. In fact, she's stuck in neutral in more ways than one. According to Georgia, she's not only on the rack of romance, but in the cakeshop of agony, the oven of luuurve, and the bakery of pain. And, if you must know why, it is all because of the Italian Stallion, Masimo. The man who has knocked the Sex God - aka Robbie - right out of her mind, and taken up residence in her heart, as well as in the band the Stiff Dylans, as their new singer. But Georgia has made the mistake of a lifetime. For, when she finally decides to give Masimo an ultimatum - become her one and only or hit the road - he tells her that he needs to think about it. And, we all know that whenever a guy uses the words "I need to think about it," he can't be thinking anything good. Which is why Georgia is on the rack of romance. Now, to distract herself from thinking about Masimo and the fact that he may not call her, or even want to be with her romantically, Georgia has thrown herself headfirst into MacUseless play rehearsals at Stalag 14, and is in the midst of helping Ro-Ro plan a Viking wedding that is scheduled to take place around five years from now. The only problem is that Dave the Laugh is around more than ever - what with MacUseless rehearsals and such, and Georgia is finding herself more and more pre-occupied with kissing him, all because she has been struck by the horn. If only Masimo would just give her the news, she could spend all of her time kissing him - or at least dreaming about kissing him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish it would not end
I read about this book in EW and immediately went online to buy it.The topic sounded so refreshing.I tore through this book in about half the time it takes me to read a book of this length.I know this sounds cliche, but this was truely laugh out loud funny.I woke up my wife on numerous occasions laughing as I read long after she has fallen asleep in bed.
4-0 out of 5 stars If you like Freaks and Geeks...
A whimsical murder mystery wrapped up in a music-obsessed episode of Freaks and Geeks. Engaging, clever, and often very funny. You don't have to be part of the teen/young adult audience to enjoy it, either. (I'm 31). 4.25/5.

5-0 out of 5 stars STUPENDOUS!!!
A refreshing and brilliant coming of age novel. There are few books that have engrossed me as this one did. The protagonist is an introverted, awkward adolescent with a rampant imagination and extensive vocabulary who will quickly steal your heart and captivate your soul. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Snapshot in Time
If I would have read this book when it came out in 2000, I probably would have been completely blown away by it.As it is, in 2006, it is still a pretty good read.
2-0 out of 5 stars Can you guess what generation the author's kids are
No doubt the 4th turning was a refreshing revelation. And the more dated predecessor Generations was a great secondary read. From that I gathered there was a sort of synergistic relationship with each skipped generation.Boomers relating to GI generation and Silent relating to the 13th generation, simply stated, a reciprocating bond of grandparents and their grandchildren.Parents sure didn't like the antics and conduct of their children but they sure love those amazing grandchildren .So it all makes sense that we get this tertiary and purely subjective read from Howe about what essentially are his darling grandchildren.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Book
I read the Millenials Rising book and I have to say that I found that a lot of the things that were said in this book to be very dated and, for the most part, not revelant to today's teenagers and young adults. One thing that I've noted is that a lot of things have happened since the publication of this book, 9/11, the war in Iraq, etc. and it doesn't jibe with me that the authors stated that the entertainment the Millenials enjoy are "squeaky clean" which doesn't explain the popualrtiy of subsequent shows such as "Chappelle's Show", or "Boondocks" both of which are highly controversial.

Editorial Review

Cameron, Carla, and Len were fascinated (for different reasons) with guns and target shooting at the Patriots' club range until the day Len brought his Kalashnikov rifle, his AR-18, and his Ruger pistol to school, and shot and killed football jock Brad Williams, and then himself. Here is yet another school shooting story that begins with bullying and ends with disaster--a type that is becoming almost a sub-genre of YA fiction. Yet Walter Dean Myers, winner of many awards for his young adult novels, brings freshness and new anguish to this familiar tale (and growing social problem) of unstable victim tormented by bullies to homicidal rage. Following the example of his own masterwork Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Shooter
It's a great book with suspense in every page! However it is not for kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great demonstration of Mr. Myers's craft
I am waiting for Walter Dean Myers to wring a play or screenplay. I am an actor and a playwright and when I read "Shooter" just like "Monster" he crafts dialogue so effectively that it carries the story even without the narrative. Each character has a specific and active voice. Even the psychologists and reporters who merely record or probe information. But it's the diary of the Shooter at the end where you will be blown away by how Myers is able to get inside the mind of a disturbed, misunderstood and lonely teenager. This book is so incredible that whenever I lend it to one of my students, I don't get it back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gun
This book Shooter is about Carmeron Porter. Carmeron is a seventeen year old African American. He goes to school at Madison High School in Harrison County. In the book Carmeron is being interviewed. He gets interviewed five times with five different people. The reason he is being interviewed is because his friend Len killed himself in school. The statement fact is: a seventeen-year-old White male found dead in the aftermath of a shooting incident at Madison High School in Harrison County. The conclusion: Death by self- inflicted wound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blah!!!
You're the one that I want, by Cecily von Ziegesar, is about preppy, rich kids who get to do whatever they want. They are very high class and are always talking about someone else. In this book, they are waiting for their college acceptance letters to come back and see which colleges they were accepted to. They are always complaining about something. They buy whatever they want and are always worried about what others will think of them. They try and find comfort in objects and or boys to calm their nerves while waiting for the letters. They won't be happy until they get their letters and get into all of the colleges that they applied to. Although this book is about a lot of wealthy and some what snobby teenagers, I really enjoy reading it. It's very interesting and funny to read. I think that some of the situations that they go through can relate to what I go through. They're teens in this book and regardless of how rich or poor you are, all teens go through some of the same situations. It's just funny to see how they would handle the different situations thrown at them. I think ultimately it's a good book because you can escape from reality while you're reading it. I can imagine the stress that they're going through while waiting for their letters so it's just interesting to read about it. It's funny because you don't think these types of things can actually take place so I enjoyed reading it. I've actually read a lot of the novels from the Gossip Girl series and they're all interesting, dramatic, and fun to read as well as hard to put down.

Parents BEWARE!!!This Author uses very strong profanity!Check it out for yourself, flip through any of her books and you will find "f" this or "motherf" throughout the whole book.I refer to it as a book loosely. It is utter filth that wasted good paper that could of been used for anyother book (except her other filth books--The IT Girl) they are littered just as much.I do not feel that our young teens or young adults need to be reading junk like this.Where have our morals and values gone?I have had this authors books removed from our schools library and the local public library as well. ...
