1-0 out of 5 stars Princess in Whining
A disgrace to the previous "Princess" books, this is possibly the worst of them all. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed the previous novels in this series, eager for the next. I was drinking these books up as though I'd just ran miles. But this book I almost literally snored through. Mia was turned from a funny, clumsy princess into a whining brat. All she worried about in this book was whether her dream boy was truly "in love" with her or not. Hey, she was his girlfriend -- what more can you ask for? In Mia Thermopolis' eyes, plenty. She just can't get enough. I thought she got over complaining about her princess lessons -- my mistake. She's also an ungrateful little snob -- her boyfriend, Michael, is so sweet and always doing such nice things for her, like coming into Algebra to say hi to her every morning even though he rode with her to school, and dedicating songs to her. And I've noticed that not once does she repay him. Mia is just a bad character to mess with! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Laura Li seems perfect in every way--beautiful, kind, smart. At her job in the school library she is smiling and helpful to everyone, and at home she cares for her ailing brother like a dutiful Asian daughter. But after midnight a very different Laura Li secretly sneaks out to wild dance clubs--desperate to escape from the pressures exerted by her cold, demanding mother and her absent father. Her teachers and the other kids reveal themselves in these short poems as they wonder about Laura, and two boys even write her love poetry, but a few people are beginning to suspect she may be on a collision course with herself. "It is time, perhaps," Laura thinks bitterly, "to dance without stopping at the bar of heaven's gate."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving story
This book explores the life of one girl and the perceptions others have of her.The layout of the text gives the story more power and immediacy. The points of view change quickly from one character to the next. This book could be used as a springboard for some interesting discussions about duty, race, love, appearances, suicide, etc.A short read, but highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Split Image
I thought that this book was very good, but also very interesting. It was neat how the book was written in poems, but I thought that there were too many characters.I would definately read this book again for a short read.I thought it was awsome.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review
"Split Image" By Mel Glenn. Laura-Li is a romodel for all. Shes smart, funny, pretty and works at the library. Everyone looks up to her, some are even jealous of her, others admirer her. But after dark its another story. Laura-Li sneaks out at night to loud banging clubs and is introduced to the 'world of drugs'. Here she forgets all of her troubles at home, taking care of her brother, her strict mother, and her father being away. Laura-Li thinks that she has to solve her problems with taking her own life "It is time, perhaps to dance without stopping at the bar of heaven's gate". Shes not the perfect angel we all thought."Split Image" was really sad, but life changing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a non-insulting Christian 'dating' book for all!
I've read my share of 'dating' books, most of the time after a relationship has ended in flames (this time was no exception). I've also read a number of 'Christian' advice books about dating, most of which range from the banal (sex is for marriage) to the ridiculous (don't show physical affection ever!), without preaching. I picked this book up in a spate of post-relationship depression and quickly it helped me to identify many of my frequent mistakes. It mentions God, but it doesn't limit the expression 'don't be unevenly yoked' to'don't date non-Christians'; it includes things along the lines of 'don't be a Mother Theresa in your relationship'. It also identifies one of the mistakes of relationships as being, if you can believe it, 'praying together'--correctly identifying the stupid over-spiritualization of honest to goodness human infatuation that I've seen too often in relationships. (And have been guilty of.)5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, time-tested dating advice...

4-0 out of 5 stars balanced, biblical book
Jeramy Clark is obviously a man who loves God, His Word, and His children. His book on dating is based on the truths stated in the Word of God, not his own made up rules.I really like how he made the point that God is who we are supposed to love most. If you are't complete in him, you will never have a good dating or married life. You cannot find everything you need in a significant other, only in God.I also liked how he mentioned that is okay to desire romance and sex.God made us that way. It's just not supposed to be our obsession. I deeply appreciated Jeramy's wisdom and humility. He certainly doesn't claim to have all the answers nor promote a cookie cutter way of dating.I personally believe the Holy Spirit is to be our guide more than anyone or anything else.God himself is the creator or romance and wants to be control of that aspect of our lives.
1-0 out of 5 stars Writer in Bad mood?
Must have been something he ate, or something, cause this book is a direct attack on Joshua Harris' I Kissed Dating Goodbye. Not only is it unpleasing in God's eyes, it's just plain rude. His basic ideas are almost identical to what Joshua Harris says, but Jeramy insists that his view is the right view and Joshua is completely wrong. He may have said the right things, but he needs to change his attitude.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Perspective
As someone who was previously a part of the "wait - never date!" group, this book was an excellent help when I did, in fact, start a "dating" relationship. While he does address some of the ideas put forth by Josh Harris, he does so in an honest and acceptable manner. I'd probably recommend this book over Harris', but if someone is looking for a slightly different take on relationships, Boy Meets Girl is a good read. ... Read more

I love this book , and I love the character Jesse. This book is nothing but nonstop action and thrills , and some parts are so sad , and how Suze does to get Jesse back is certainly is unexpected. 4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource
This is one textbook I actually enjoy reading! If you are interested in Young Adult literature, either from an educator's or a parental perspective, this book is a great place to learn more.Of course, being a textbook, there is a section on the history of the genre, but it's actually interesting. But the best feature of this bookis the the Focus Boxes which list current titles with brief summaries as examples of each format and genre. Also useful is a chronological list of award-winning books which appears near the beginning of the book. This is one text I plan to keep, then replace with newer editions as they are published.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for anyone interested in YA Lit
This textbook type book is an easy read, full of information regarding young adult characteristics in appealing writings, the growth and development of young adult literature and excellent listings, bibliographies and related web sites.Anyone working with young adults and literature will find this book a treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good resource.
Literature for Today's Young Adults, by Aleen Pace Nilsen and Kenneth L. Donelson, Sixth Edition. I purchased this book for a class in adolescent literature, and have found to be the book very good and very thorough. The book includes many chapters about modern adolescent literature and their various controversies.Besides being an interesting book, I found it very thorough because it includes varied points of view, and includes many articles written by the authors themselves who write novels for young adults. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Joy for Students and Teachers
Sharon Flake takes the spin on teenage relationships to a new level in this unique book on young love.Unlike some books which simplify adolescent relationships as mere infatuations or persistent melodrama this takes a look at all of the complicated reasons both men and women might enter a destructive relationship. Not afraid of controversy, Flake explores teen pregnancy, abusive boyfriends, dead beat dads, back stabbing best friends, the rich/poor dichotomy and how all of it can affect a teenager's life. Each of the characters are faced with the question of who they are without "the man" in question in their life ...and the answers will surprise you.
4-0 out of 5 stars Who Am I Without Him?
I picked up this book thinking it'd be horrible.Even the title is forboding:"Who am I without him?"How anti-feminism.I didn't think I would ever be able to enjoy this book.

Joey Pigza Loses Control by Jack Gantos was a great book. This book was very funny because of all the dumb things they did in the story. You will have to read the story to find what they did. Joey's dad and grandma are very weird. They are not like your normal parents. This book makes you just want to keep reading and reading. It is excellent for kids of all ages.

During his summer, Joey Pigza goes to visit his dad who he hasn't visited in a very long time. His mother, no longer being married to him, does not trust Joey's father for he has had many addiction problems and was very childlike and immature. From his father, Joey inherited ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), which he has dealt with by using patches that supply him with his medications. When he visits his father though, his father doesn't believe in the patches and flushes them down the toilet. Here start the constant wacky events of Joey Pigza's summer with his father.

Editorial Review

In order to pass English class and graduate, 18-year-old Steve York has to write a 100- page essay about his life. What sounds like a run-of-the-mill writing assignment, however, becomes an excuse for Steve to reflect on the last four years (from Texas freshman to California senior), and figure out where it all went wrong. Maybe it was when he discovered that he really couldn't relate to his father, the Famous Astronaut. Or it could be because his "heart had been run through frappé, puree, and liquefy on a love blender" by his ex-girlfriend, Wanda "Dub" Varner. No matter where the finger of blame ends up pointing, it's a wild ride of self-enlightenment as Steve discovers that not all relationships are permanent, and that some--like the one with his dad--can be mended with a little work. With Steve, author Rob Thomas has taken a teenage outsider and given him a funny, intelligent voice: "There are those males who merely fill ear holes with tiny studs hardly big enough to offend a Marine. Not me. Most days I wear big hoops. When I combine the look with a doo rag, I'm a regular pirate." As with his other novels--Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Fans of Veronica Mars
Lots of fun. I bought it because I'm a fan of Rob Thomas' television shows Veronica Mars and Cupid, and because Rob used to teach high school here in Austin. It's written in a voice similar to Veronica Mars, and while there are no crimes being committed, there is a central mystery. And the book gets high school romance right. It's a quick read, but a good time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rats Saw God
Do any of you sometimes have problems understanding your parents or do some of your parents have problems understanding you? If the answer is yes, I think you'll be able to relate to 18 year-old Steve York in this book titled Rats Saw God. Steve's parents divorced when he was a freshman in high school and his perfectionist straight-laced astronaut father gets custody of him. Steve's mother gets custody of his sister and moves to San Diego. One day, just out of the blue after finishing his junior year at his Houston, Texas high school, Steve drives 27 hours non-stop to the Pacific Ocean in San Diego to live with his mother and sister, unannounced. Steve begins to finish out his last year of high school at his new high school in San Diego, Wakefield High. Steve's a self-described pothead so he wasn't all that surprised when the principal summons him to the guidance counselor's office one day. Steve just thinks his drug problems were going to be discussed. Mr. DeMouy turns out to be this cool, professional and unflappable guidance counselor, and he informs Steve that he's one English credit short of graduating. DeMouy gives Steve the option of writing a 100-page paper on any subject he chooses to earn that credit. Seeing that Steve was awarded National Merit finalist and obtained a 4.0 GPA in his Houston high school along with earning other academic honors, DeMouy feels Steve could be up to the challenge if Steve sets his mind to it. At this point, the story really takes off. Steve's journals his current year in high school and his previous three years of high school before arriving to San Diego. But I'm going to let you each find out the meaning behind the title of this book for yourselves so you'll have to read the book, Rats Saw God.

5-0 out of 5 stars For what it is...
...I really enjoyed the book. My 18 year old daughter brought the book home last year, and she can't get enough of it or the series of books under the Daughter's of the Moon series.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stanton is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!yummy!!!!!!!!
This story is the best I, ve read in all the series. It shows Stanton'spointo of view. You get to know him a little better and understand all the problems he faces as a follower because of his love for Serena.Stantons a dream guy. He's cute, mysterious, and has really cool powers.
3-0 out of 5 stars A little Male Perspective
This was the book that made me keep reading after I read the first in the series. I wanted to get to the book that I knew would be focused on Stanton and his point of view.It wasn't as fufilling as I had hoped, however, it was not as dissapointing as the book told from Serena's P.O.V.What is great about this book of this series as all of the background information we are getting, Stanton's past, that of some of his fellow followers and more of the technicalities of following the Atrox. The book also does a nice job of leaving you wondering what is going to happen next. It doesn't necessarily leave you with a burning desire to find out what happened next, but a mild curiousity that could lead to me reading it, or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Book
As a child, I unfortunately encountered problems with addiction in my family. I was given this book by a ffriend of my mother's. Together, my mom and I would read it, and it ultimately helped me cope with understanding "daddy's problem." I believe this is an excellent choice for children who are seeing the effects of addiction in their families. It is also a very informative books for those fortunate children who do not have to deal with addiction. It was definitely a huge help for me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great guideline for increasing communication

Editorial Review

It would seem that 14-year-old Mia Thermopolis ("five foot nine inchestall, with no visible breasts, feet the size of snowshoes") has the kind of lifeevery Manhattan teenager could only dream of: She is, in her spare time, theprincess of the European country of Genovia. Alas, the Royal Privilege is morelike a Predicament. Not only does she have to endure daily princess lessons fromher critical Grandmère ("It isn't as if I'm going to show up at thecastle and start hurling olives at the ladies-in-waiting"), but her newstepfather is also her algebra teacher, her mother is pregnant and vomiting, shedoesn't like her boyfriend very much, and she's convinced the real love of herlife--her best friend's older brother--thinks of her as a kid. 4-0 out of 5 stars Princess in Love
This book is the third series to the Princess Diaries. It's more in the life of 15-year old Mia Thermopolis. She has a crush on her best friend Lilybrother, Michael . She doesn't like Kenny, the guy she is dating right now, too much. She kind of thinks he is weird. Mia gets kind of jealous in this book because Michael went ice-skating with her and Lily, but he brings a date. Mia thinks she isn't attractive at all, but she also thinks she can't measure up because the girl cloned a fruit fly. To find out what else happens read the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Princess in Love
Mia now has a boyfriend, but Kenny's not the one she wants to go out with. And she is having a hard time trying to get Michael to notice her, and she's trying to deal with all of her stress in her life, including her finals. But mostly she's trying to figure out how to dump Kenny without breaking his heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bang

2-0 out of 5 stars Donald Goines Flashback
I read a book by Donald Goines about a raped woman and the whole time I was reading it, I was thinking "Why in the world would someone write a book like this?" As much as I love all of Flake's other books, that's the exact same thing I was thinking about this book. The book started off very interesting about how one brother deals with another brother's death, and it reminded me of a cousin which gave me good and bad memories. But then the book launched off into this twisted relationship between the living brother and his father. This book deeply disturbed me during the camping "results" and after that it just became so off-the-wall.I started questioning my donations to homeless people and who really needs it.I can't say the book was bad...it just wasn't for me...and definitely an extreme difference from the other books that I've read by Flake.

4-0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) - Guns really sound like that
Bang! Thirteen-year-old Mann can still hear the sound of the gun which killed his six-year-old brother two years ago. He and his parents still struggle with the death and with the breakdown of their family because of it. Because his brother was gunned down while playing on their front steps, Mann will only enter the house through the back door.

ISBN 0064401987 - An ALA Notable Children's book, The Pinballs is one of those books that took me a little while to like.Once I gave it a chance, it turned out to be a very good read.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pinballs
I think this book was a little scary in the begining, but in the end it was a very good book and was worth to take the time for.I think that a lot of people would enjoy this book.I thought that the Mason's would adopt them and that they will always be together, but I guess I was wrong.I also think they should make a better ending instead of walking home. I read my mom the first chapter and she wouldn't let me read any more because she thought it was so sad. I think that they should have had Carlie run away and then come back because she realizes that she misses the Mason's and Carlie and Harvey so much. ... Read more
