5-0 out of 5 stars Strong characterization and fast-paced story line.
Ursula K. LeGuin's VOICES will reach the same age group with a fantasy set in a world where a once-peaceful city of scholars has been captured by desert Alds, its residents forbidden to read or write. Teen Memer finds her life changed with poet Orrec and his wife arrive - and finds that as she explores her skills and talents, forbidden in the new world, she may prove her people's last hope. This is the second book of the Annals of the Western Shore - but it stands alone well and needs no prior introduction to prove compelling, with its strong characterization and fast-paced story line.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good peice of writing for a master story teller.
Much more fast paced than I am used to for LeGuin's novels. As always though, the writing is amazing, she really does show her family's background in anthropology when she creates these new peoples. They are so realistic.I had the feeling while reading this that it is very much inspired by some contemporary events. It deals with the effects of war--and not just war but an occupied people (in a city) and how the cultures of the occupied and occupier clash due to willful misunderstanding and ignorance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining story, engaging characters
This is a YA novel set in the same world as Le Guin's earlier Gifts, and Orrec and Gry, from the previous book, do figure in the story. The story is completely separate, though, and it's not necessary to have read that one in order to read this.

Editorial Review

Tom Veitch's original comic strip story traces Luke Skywalker's entrance into the Dark Side in the years after the fall of Darth Vader. The Empire is fragmented, and the Rebels seem on the verge of winning their long struggle when the sinister power of World Devastators emerges from the galactic core. These Devastators chew up worlds and manufacture robotic war machines out of the resources they consume. Luke's dark journey seems the only way to halt the massacre. But despite the importance of Luke in Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too weak to defend itself from the dark side
The idea of story about Luke joining the dark side was very enticing, so I went for it. I noticed a lot of people gave reviews based on the art, and I would give this another star if I weighted toward the art side. I was more interested in the plot, why Luke would join the dark side...his fierce struggle back, but none of that is here. This graphic novel suffers from lack of character development...and weak fighting. While there are fights, both parties lose/win too easily. Not boring, just weak.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
Alright this review is a little belated but better late then never. I'm a fan of Star Wars and as such was thrilled with the revival of the genera back in the early 90's. Especially with regards to the novels being written by guys like Timothy Zahn. We'll one of those series (the Jedi Academy Trilogy) made numerous reference to this story and included it in the Star Wars novel continuum (despite being a comic book), so I felt I had to read it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Arguably the finest Star Wars graphic novel series

4-0 out of 5 stars Leapholes
Every Saturday for the past year, eleven-year-old Ryan indignantly visits his father who sits in a jail cell. Supposedly, his father is innocent; at least that's what his father tells Ryan. Yet, Ryan witnessed with his own eyes as his father pleaded guilty in front of a judge. Ryan feels his father has betrayed him with the lies and the claimed crime, and it doesn't help at all that the entire town now shuns him and his family. As the time for this Saturday's visit approaches, Ryan finally can't stand it another minute and decides to leave. He's not running away, per se, he just decides to be somewhere else during prison visiting hour.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a great YA novel
I got an advanced copy (a "galley", I think it's called) of this book due to my involvement in the ABA Criminal Justice Section. While I normally hesitate wasting time on children's or young adult fiction with all the reading I have to do as a lawyer, I made an exception in this case because this is a Grippando novel and I'm a fan.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Middle School book
I really liked Leapholes and would give it 4.5 stars out of five, but i think someone a little younger than me (say 11 or 12) would definitely give it 5 stars. This is a great book for seventh grade history students because they are studying Civics and learning about cases like Dred Scott v. Sandford. And this is also a good book for eighth graders as they are learning American History and may of the things discussed in Leapholes, such as the underground railroad, are taught to these students.I thought it was very cool how the author gave a certain famous American president a cameo role (I won't say who, since it might spoil the mystery). The only fault I found was that the titles of "Legal Eagles" and "Legal Evil" were a little childish, but I thought that the way the author handled this was good--he basically has the characters making fun of the terms too, saying that no one should hire a lawyer who can't make fun of himself. The mystery in this book is fantastic. You will want to keep turning the pages to learn the meaning of the riddle "where the brood follows the dam," and the final surprise involving Ryan's family is one that I would never have seen coming. (I read many Nancy Drew books when I was younger and was almost always able to figure them out).I think Leapholes should become a series, and I could easily see it covering all periods of time and places. Not just the American legal system, by maybe the British or the Ancient Greek laws.Overall, a great read! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Story = B+
This is a very good book, and the conclusion of one of the best of the forgotten realms series. The first two books are even better than this one, the series as a whole gets a solid "A". This Book seemed a bit rushed and lacked some of the color a vividness of the first two books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Conclusion to this Trilogy
Final Gate by Richard Baker is the third and final book in the Last Mythal trilogy. The other two books are The Forsaken House and Farthest Reach. This book is the culmination of several plots coming together in a climatic conclusion, one that will have a profound impact on the realms, in particular the area of the Dales. If you have not read the first two books in this trilogy and are thinking about reading this one, I highly recommend reading the first two; otherwise you will be quickly lost in the story and miss the overall picture of some of the events that occur.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate X-Men hits double digits
Well, this graphic novel is one of the better Ultimate X-Men I have read. This volume of Ultimate X-Men can only make one laugh and cry. A definite buy for any X-Men fan (long with the previous 9!). It's quite amazing how only 4 issues (Ultimate X-Men #50-53) can make one feel like days have passed after reading it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Where are the X-Men?
Slightly better than Brian K.Vaughan's previous sotry arc, "The Tempest", but it seems no one at Marvel has informed him that he is writing about the X-Men...
1-0 out of 5 stars The big general grand story...
... is going nowhere to my opinion: the only thing to see is the artwork, which is great. Maybe it's because i'm not used to the changes(especially that Dazzler look, when i expected something of a "Lavigne" look). Still the general story is 'too many things happening in too little time, and everybody running around, each to his/her work'

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tip 'O the Hat to Mr. Brian Jacques
At just three days old, Deyna's father was slain, and he was taken from his family by the Juskarath clan. The Juskarath believed Deyna to be the prophesied "Taggerung," the uber-elite warrior/ruler of all the Juska clans, even though he was an otter born of Redwall Abbey. After fifteen seasons of rigorous training reminiscent of the Spartans, Deyna realized that he wasn't cut out to be a savage killing machine like the rest of his clan. He broke free of them, and ran off to find his true family. But leaving a Juska clan wasn't that easy. Deyna soon found himself being hunted by his archrival, Gruven, and his vicious fellow clanbeasts. He ran for days across the countryside and through the forestlands, and finally met a creature that he grew to call friend. The creature was a harvest mouse by the name of Nimbalo, who himself had a mysterious and painful past. Deyna and Nimbalo traveled to the mountains in hopes of losing Gruven and his band of vermin and instead found an old shrew named Ruskem, who sheltered the two for a night. During the night, Deyna awoke to find Nimbalo yelling in his sleep, reliving the day he left his father's farm. It seemed that Nimbalo's father had beat him, and that's why he packed up and left. The pair left when morning came, and continued on through the mountains, only to find Gruven's gang yet again. Gruven caused a rockslide that killed several hundred pigmy shrews, even though they were meant to kill Deyna. Nimbalo and Deyna helped the shrews to bury their dead, and then continued on to find a hedgehog named Robald trapped in a mudball. The big otter freed Robald, and followed him back to his home. Robald was due to visit his Great-Aunt Lollery, who lived along the riverbank, so the pair accompanied him as sort of bodyguards. Unfortunately for Robald, he had chosen to visit at the same time as his rowdy country cousins, the Dillypins. Deyna ended up making an enemy out of the leader Dillypin, Jurkin, shortly after arrival. He and Jurkin settled their disagreement with a round of spiketussling, a hedgehog form of wrestling. Jurkin accepted Deyna as an equal, and offered to ferry them down the river towards Redwall Abbey. The Dillypin raft soon came upon the watermeadows, a favorite place of the Dillypin children. Nimbalo went off on his own, and Deyna took a long time finding him. But he was finally found, in his father's farmhouse, standing over his father's corpse. Nimbalo said that he was already slain when he arrived, with a mortal wound that could only have been caused by his father's own axe. A little sadder, the pair returned to the raft and set sail again, to stop at the edge of Mossflower Wood. Jurkin accompanied them a little ways in, but had to return to the raft. Deyna and Nimbalo kept on through Mossflower, and eventually came upon Redwall Abbey, where they were promptly mistaken for vermin and taken captive. It so happened that the Abbey was currently under siege by Gruven's lot, and they wanted the Abbey to hand over the Taggerung. Deyna desperately pleaded to be set free to kill the vermin, and the abbeybeasts complied. Deyna grabbed the sword of Martin the Warrior in his mad dash outside to get to the vermin. Swinging the big sword, he charged straight into the cluster of vermin, taking three arrows to the chest, and slew every last one of them. Deyna finally ended his killing spree several miles down the road, and was found by Redwall's Skipper of Otters. Skipper took him back to Redwall, where his mother Filorn and his sister Mhera saw their long lost son and brother for the first time in sixteen seasons. Filorn suggested that Deyna be taken to Rukky Garge, the otter healer, to heal him, of course, but to also remove all the tattoos covering his face. The process took a good week, but when Rukky had finished, he was even better than new. With renewed strength, Deyna and Skipper returned to Redwall. Filorn and Mhera raced out of the front gates to meet Deyna, who ran equally as fast to meet them, and all three collapsed in a joyful heap on the path.

Long ago the clan of Swaney Rath took a child from Redwall. The baby otter deyna, destined to be the "Taggerung" a warrior of legend chosen to lead the Juska. In his fifteenth season he rebells aginst his destiny.

I agree with those who gave "Taggerung" both good and bad reviews. The story isn't bad, just terribly average.

4-0 out of 5 stars great series
Great series for young and old looking for a mental shut-down for bed book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book, one of the the best!
This book started out a little slow but, the more you read the better it gets. It was a great book Wot Wot! It starts out in Riftgaurd, an evil fortress ruled by Ferrets. Triss (Trisscar), the squirrel, and two of her friends, are escape slaves. Princess Kurda
3-0 out of 5 stars Feels like a failed experiment: not bad, but not worth reading or memorable. Not recommended.
The fifteenth Redwall novel, Triss is the story of slaves, pirates, treasure, and riddles. Triss is an escaped slave from the north, hotly pursued by her captors and a Freebooter crew. Meanwhile, a young badger and a hare leave Salamadastron to begin an adventure on their own, and Redwallers discover clues leading them towards Brockhall, the badger home and safehouse from the days before Redwall. The three stories come together when Triss meets up with Sagax the badger and they are chased deep into Mossflower Wood. All of the usual aspects of the Redwall books are here--riddles, adventures, travel, battles, lots of food, as well as a variety of cultures and accents, yet in Triss they seem different: over-exaggerated in many places and unusual in others. Accents are almost comical, the emphasis on food is heavy-handed, and the riddles come in the form of a coded language. Furthermore, the diverse storylines in Triss remain independent almost all of the way through, and the text only feels united and complete in the last through chapters. Despite my love for the Redwall series, I wasn't impressed with this book. I found some characters annoying (a first for this series) and didn't find the plot very exciting. This was just a bad book for Jacques, and it's the first Redwall book I wouldn't recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
Ouran High School Host Club is hilarious. If you like reading about people who are strangely funny, this is the book for you.The pictures look great and the story seems to jump around a bit but I feel it fits this type of story.Buy it if you want a laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sparkling as a jewel, decorative as lace.
A silly, wordy, and highly charged parody of a rich fraternity that is every bit as funny as it tries to be - the author a hovering omnipresence of biting remark. It's not difficult to sympathize with Haruhi, the reasonably minded, hoi polloi student who stumbles into their midst and unfortunately knocks over a valuable antique - great luck for them, of mixed blessing for her. A dense packaging of visuals is relieved by the airy and delicately refined artwork, but with characters so quickly fleshed out and mysteries not so very long in keeping, who knows to what lengths the author will be able to keep this fresh?

4-0 out of 5 stars I can't help it...
...but I have to give this series four stars if for no other reason that there is very little manga on the market that is able to make me laugh out loud.In fact, I had to purchase later volumes so that I wouldn't disturb other customers in the bookstore with my laughter. The comedy is extremely silly, but what makes it work is that the way in which it is delivered is unexpected.

i have to agree w/ the other reviewers: all of vaughan's books for ult. x-men up to now have been varying shades of terrible and unreadable. this book does a good job of redeeming him, and makes us wonder what the problem was before. the story is fairly solid, the cast is there (introduces ult. mystique), and we get to see emma frost, cypher, cannonball, sunspot, havok, polaris, and northstar. there are some less-than-believable moments, but overall it works and def. lays the foundation for some good stories to come. has def. got me back to looking forward to ult. x-men instead of dreading it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hooray! An Ultimate X-men title that makes me look forward to reading the rest of the series!
I had to admit, after reading some of the latest Ultimate X-men volumes, I didn't have particularly good expectations for this one. I bought it mostly just to continue having my collection up to date. But I was more than pleasently surprised when I read this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brian K. Vaughn just keeps getting better
Some idiot below me made a really asinine comment about this book which couldnt be father from the truth. This book is quite exciting and Brian K Vaughn is an author more people need to pick up on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better
This is one of the better Ultimate Fantastic Four collections.Greg Land's art works well with the team, and the writing is great. This collection introduces us to Namor, who thanks to a little Ultimate tinkering is back to being a badass again. It also has a really cool story about a parallel universe in which all of the heroes have been infected by a virus that pretty much makes them zombies. The story involves them trying to get to the Ultimate universe to start the plague there. All in all, this was an enjoyable read.

4-0 out of 5 stars George Romero Would Be Proud!
The Crossover story arc may not be earth shattering nor spin the reader's head around a grand cosmic epic that goes nowhere fast a la Infinite Crisis but just like Mark Millar's Spider-Man run, it is eccentric entertainment at its best.In today's comic book industry where mediocre writers desperately try to make a name for themselves *cough*Geoff Johns*cough*Devin Grayson*cough* by redesigning characters and their supporting cast as well as needlessly attempting to shock the audience, many of them have forgotten that a super-hero comic is first & foremost, an action and adventure genre.Seriously, how long before a writer tries to retcon the Spider-Man mythos with Ben Parker having sexually abused Peter because he or she wants to leave their 'stamp' on the character?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Life Of Thomas A. Edison
Thomas A. Edison is about a boy who likes to ask questions. He came into his gooses nest and sat on her egg. Isn't that weird. He wanted the egg process to go faster. Tom is a good boy. You would like this book if you read it. It is funny and it is exciting. While you are reading it, you won't even know that you are learning. I was supposed to read it as a book report and I am glad I chose to read it. Tom was dedicated to make what he is working on come true. He messed up a couple of times like the time he told his friend to drink these two chemicals mix together so his friend could fly like a bird. Instead, hisd friendf got sick. I laughed. I give this book 5 points!

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Wizard of Menlo Park"
Have you ever tried to sit on an egg and hatch it? Thomas Alva Edison did! He was a young who was curious about the world around him. He was born in a city near New York City. His family did not have much money, but they made a great effort to send young Thomas to school. At his first school that he attended, he was expelled for asking too much questions to her teacher. At his other 2 schools that he went too, he was also expelled for asking too many questions. At a young age Thomas would sell newspapers at a railroad. At the young age of 23, Thomas invented the phonograph, which is the grandfather of the Compact Disk. Then a couple of years later Thomas after 7 attempts invented the Light bulb. Years after inventing the light bulb, New York City was entirely lighted by light bulbs thanks to Thomas. He was even called "The wizard of Menlo Park".4-0 out of 5 stars Thomas A. Edison
This book is wonderful for ages 8 - 12 who want to read about Thomas Edison's childhood and important things about his adult life. Each chapter has exciting stories that happened to this inquisitive boy.He was a very curious boy who would always ask questions. His parents, mother in particular, are very supportive of his curiosity. There are interesting events that happen like when Thomas gets his first ice skates and when he rides on a steam engine train. If you are interested in the world around you and maybe interested in science, then this is the book for you. It's fascinating to read about Thomas Edison as a young boy and as he grows into an adult because the only info I had before was a listing of his inventions.By the way, it would be very fast reading for an adult, and it might be nice if your child is reading this that you read it, too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "Why am I in your stinky dog body?"
Ultimate Spidey, to me, has been consistently one of the best comics out there for years now, and, in terms of humor, it is unmatched. Set now in contemporary times, we are again priveleged to witness Peter Parker run thru his trials and errors as he juggles adolescence, high school, and superhero life. Past trade paperbacks chronicling this Ultimate version of Peter Parker have been must-have collections, and, while Ultimate Spider-Man, Volume 12: Superstars doesn't offer the same depth, it's still very much worth checking out.
2-0 out of 5 stars SPIDEY'S SO-SO SUPERSTAR CROSSOVERS!
I'm a huge fan of Bendis and Bagley's work on the Ultimate Spider-Man books.Even their weak stories are better than 99.9% of the rest of the comic marketplace.
1-0 out of 5 stars Bendis' spider sense barely tingling here
After killing off Gwen Stacey in the last trade arc, Bendis drops the ball with three weak story lines, starting with a truly insipid "Freaky Friday" body switch between Spider-Man and Wolverine, with Mr. Bendis stroking his ego by adding his image to apologia introductions. Next, the Human Torch still needs half a semester to get his high school diploma; no No-Prizes for correctly guessing which school he picks in this mushy tale that reads more like a Marvel After School Special. The Ultimates and Dr. Stephen Strange phone in appearances in our final story, a wordy, half-baked attempt to place Strange in the Ultimate universe. "Superstars" marks a new low in the USM trade collections. Readers on a budget and those with some standards can safely give this one a pass. ... Read more
