5-0 out of 5 stars Lord God, what a book!
At the risk of sounding blasphemous let me simply say "Lord God, what a book!" This book belongs on your MUST READ list!
5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing Non-fiction
I picked this book up based on recommendations from online reader groups who said it would read more like fiction than non-fiction.They were right!Hoose has meticulously researched the plight of the "Lord God Bird", the ivory-billed woodpecker, documenting the efforts to locate the dwindling population and the sad effects of man vs. nature.Well highlighted by photographs, we follow the loss of this magnificent creature as its habitat is swallowed up by man's greed in the first half of the twentieth century.Hoose's writing is vivid and engrossing and caused me to do that rarest of things---go online and research more for myself. Most interesting of all is that just after this book was published, there have been reports of the rediscovery of the ivory-bill!This is a wonderful book appropriate for people of all ages and especially those who are worried about the endangerment of species by mankind's shortsightedness.Recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Lord God Bird
I thought that this book was well written, reasearched, and thought through. But as a 12 year old I didn't enjoy it quite as much as i think an older person would. I think that the author wrote the stories well, and made them very drawing. This book was not one of my favorite books, partially because it was very hard to read. The other reason was beause to me it was a bit confusing. I could see him doing a kids version of the same book, but making it a bit simpler or shorter. I thought that the author did a great job in writing this book, but I think you should wait to read it until you are a bit older. Some people I know thought it was a great book, but they're older than me. So again I thought that this was an o.k. book, but not a great kid's read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent autobiography for young people as well as adults.
My 8 year old was assigned to do her monthly book report on a biography. She wanted to read about Abraham Lincoln... until she found out she had to dress up as the book's subject! Regrouping with a week to go and a driving vacation looming, I rushed to ...to find a children's biography available in audio download... and stumbled upon this gem. We all listened to the (abridged) audio version on the trip, and I do think that hearing it read by the author added a great deal. My daughter read the unabridged book with fascination when we got home, though I suspect she might have had more difficulty relating to the book had she not heard Jane Goodall speak her own words first. At any rate, the report (outfitted with khakis, a notebook, and a velcro-handed stuffed chimp) was a great success, and my daughter has met a role model of determination, compassion, and wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Heart-warming Adventure
An excellent book!Reading about the extraordinary life Jane Goodall has led is fascinating in itself.Add to it the personalities of the chimps you get to know as you read the book and the adventures Jane Goodall has experienced, and you have a fascinating read.Other reviews recommend this book to children, I recommend it for adults as well.I am thirty-something years young and cried when I read parts of this.Dr. Goodall's love for these animals really comes through.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for younger kids
I had purchased for my 9 year old (who is a very advanced reader and gifted student) the Usborne World History book. She LOVED that book, and has read it cover to cover several times. I figured that the Usborne Science Encyclopedia would be similarly interesting to her.Wrong.She has barely touched the Science Encyclopedia. The problem with the Science Encyclopedia is that it is very complex and written at a very high level. I wouldn't recommend it for a child less than 14 or 15 and maybe even beyond that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Science Encyclopedia a wealth of information at low cost.
My wife and I have enjoyed the Science Encyclopedia very much. The interweaving of the internet web sites make this a great information resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for All Homeschoolers!
We are classically educating our children at home, and I was a little nervous about teaching chemistry to a 3rd grader. But this book allows you to study your topic in as much depth as you wish.In addition to the helpful websites (some are more helpful than others, admittedly), there are mini experiments and "see for yourself" projects that are fun, safe and educational.Theories are presented as theories, not facts. However, creation or "intelligent design" are not presented at all, which makes this encyclopedia incomplete.Other Christian homeschoolers may have a problem with the "800 million years ago..." jargon, but that's why we homeschool- to weed out the nonsense in our children's education.HOMESCHOOLERS: READ MY OTHER REVIEWS! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Five-hoot rating!
I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. It appears to be designed to appeal to kids, but turns out to also have stunning array of fantastic information, often more than you find in "serious" owl books (e.g., "North American Owls", or "Owls the Silent Fliers").Also, maybe less than half of the book is directly about "owl puke", the rest being jam-packed with sections on owl calls, hearing and vision, hunting technique, how they stay cool, mating, digestion, puking in the animal kingdom (that's right, horses can't puke), a recipe for "owl puke" candy, etc.And naturally if your intent is to examine some owl pellets, then of course this is a great book for that too. Despite the great (and accurate) technical content, it would not be intimidating for a youngster to read. And it's sprinkled with humor. Highly recommended (by someone over 40).

3-0 out of 5 stars A Real Hoot!,
Owl Puke(TM) is a wonderful hunters tool used for trapping pigeons which feed on the poop and vomit of nighttime owls, which by the way, has plenty of calcium and protein. Just spread this out on the snow and wait a few moments and about one hundred pigeons will fly there instantly. Suggestion: buy about 100 packs of this because actually its rather tasty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Kids
This is not only a compelling story, but helps encourage environmental awareness amongst kids. I bought it for my son on a whim and he absolutely devoured it. The characters are believably independent and I really appreciated their investigative styles. Kids need to think for themselves and this is a sweet, lively book that encourages such thinking with some very positive results. I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is the worst book EVER!!!!!
i was assigned to read this in 5th grade and i'm still trying to forget the book! if there was a button for -10 star s i would choose that. this book is cheaper than the match i used to burn it with!!! Do Not read this!!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Eco-Mystery
Environmentalist, ecologist, naturalist, and writer Jean Craighead George, the Rachel Carson for children, will win her audiences once again with this story. The plot revolves around Tony Isidoro, a young biologist who is bent on solving the mystery of the death of his hometown's feathered mascot, Cock Robin. As he uncovers assorted clues strung throughout the town--chemical activity, sudden loss of frogs and birds--Tony must try to convince his naive neighbors that not just one thing is responsible for the bird's death, but many imbalances in the town's ecosystem, which everyone is convinced is the cleanest around.Since it's an eco-mystery, the story is grippingly told in the style of a crime investigation. From the beginning you want to know Who Really Killed Cock Robin: "Cock Robin lay on his back with his feet in the air. . .It was seven minutes past six A.M. on the twenty-fourth day of May.He was dead."There are endless possiblities for the cause of the bird's death, and at times it's a bit unrealistic when Tony immediately dismisses some types of poisons and investigates others.Younger kids may have no idea what DDT, PCB, and 2,4,5-T are, though the author does try to explain them. However, the story, the dedication--"To sunshine, clear water, and sparkling skies and to the kids who are cleaning up the Earth"--and Ms. George's supportive Author's Note in the new paperback version will surely inspire kids to clean up their environment and veer away from the use of harmful, chemical-containing products. If one enjoys this Eco-Mystery, check out the others in the series--THE CASE OF THE MISSING CUTTHROATS; THE FIRE BUG CONNECTION; and THE MISSING 'GATOR OF GUMBO LIMBO.Don't forget Jean Craighead George's eighty or so other remarkable stories--the Julie of the Wolves books, the My Side of the Mountain trilogy, the One Day series. . .the list goes on and on.Each book will deepen readers' respect for nature and our beautiful but threatened planet. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I love, love, love this book!
I love this book! It was given to me as a guide for the Roots and Shoots program! Having had some basic Biology in college I was able to grasp everything and translate it for my seven-year-old daughter. The two of us have had a blast learning and relearning some pretty amazing facts about this great planet we call home! I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun and informative read! The chapters are broken into small enough parts that you don't feel like you're trudging through lenghty lectures with big scary words and ideas! I love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE PERFECT ECOLOGICAL EDUCATION TOOL
That the world we now live in is unsustainable should go without saying. Skyrocketing human populations put enormous pressure on the productive and absorptive capacities of Earth, outstripping her carrying capacity by some twenty percent. As ever more fisheries collapse, forests shrink, rangelands deteriorate, soils erode, species vanish, temperatures rise, rivers run dry, water tables fall, ozone fades and polar ice caps melt, the single most important question humanity has faced resonates ever louder: How can we live sustainably? Rather than naively banking on some techno-fix, Art believes that we must learn about earth systems in order to live in accord with those systems. In other words, he believes humanity must become ecologically literate.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Art's Guide to Planet Earth
Finally, a book that takes on the Earth Systems instead of a collection of unconnected Earth facts.Dr. Art's talent for describing the big picture through an interconnected systems approach provides the tool I've been waiting for as an educator and as a citizen of the global community. Thisreadable and beautifully illustrated book is going to be the guide mystudents use as they travel the Earth Systems. With Dr. Art's guide mystudents will learn about why the Earth is so extraordinary and whatEarthlings can do when they think globally. I can't wait to share Dr. Art'sGuide to Planet Earth with my fellow teachers and my friends. Thank youDr. Art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Distinguished Mystery Book(siobhan fitzgerald, age 11)
Flush is a mystery book that I would highly recomend for younge readers. Dusty Muleman, is the criminal who is supposidley dumping sewage into the many waters of Thunder Beach to save money. This book also includes fantastic thrills to were Abbey and Noah Underwood come into close incounters of being caught while full filling thier full proof plan. They also have a couple of former crew members to help them capture the crook and save the beach for both wildlife, and themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hiaasen is fun and fast!
Flush takes place in Florida. Noah Underwood, the main character, is trying to catch Dusty in the act of dumping his casino boat's waste in the water. HIs father knows that Dusty is doing this, so he sunk the boat. Pane Underwood (Noah's father) goes to jail for sinking the boat. This book is hysterical, a must-read, can't-put-down!

4-0 out of 5 stars This book was so exciting I didnt want to put it down.
Richard Trout is a great writer and this is his best book yet. This book takes place in an Alaskan mountain range. They ride on dog sleds in a blizzard and get chased by bears. My favorite part was when they get trapped in the cabin and a bear breaks in and tries to kill them.

4-0 out of 5 stars "well written thriller"
This book was greatly written. With great detail, the plot takes you all the way around the world to explore and discover new things. The adventure is one you would be glad to experience. I invite you to read this astounding book. My favorite part is when R.O. attempts to climb to the top of the totem pole.
