5-0 out of 5 stars worth every penny
We found this book at our local library and after renewing itmany times purchased our own copy. This book is simply wonderful. It introduces both kids and adults to the constellations through stories, quizes, and scientific information. There are star charts for each season that show you the stars as you would see them outside. On the facing page you then see the connected constellations. This book is really a great treat.

3-0 out of 5 stars Did you got a new (first ) telescope?
Excellent for kids and very easy for inexpert.
5-0 out of 5 stars a true classic!
This book has brought my children and I, all casually amateur astronomers, endless hours of joy picking out constellations in our backyard. One of my son's favorite gifts was a tie-in poster I got him for his birthday with the stars and constellations from the night he was born - If you can track one of these down, i'd highly recommend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book seems to have just the right amount of information in it.I came across this book in the library and found myself reading quite a bit of it even before I showed my daughter the book (we were looking for books for her.) She later received this as a gift.I think this book is good for kids probably seven and up, my son is six and does look through it but I don't know that he fully get's it.Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "What those guys said"
The reviews on this book are remarkably accurate. This is not a childrens' book. Even though decades have passed since it was first published, no other text has been able to bump it off a 'best in class' position. If you want to look to the sky for familiar shapes, this is the book for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars best star book ever

3-0 out of 5 stars Not about coincidence
The Wooden Books series is wonderful. This is a beautiful member of the line, but it is about the geometric harmonies of the solar system, not so much about coincidence as such, so I felt a little disappointment.
4-0 out of 5 stars Gimme that Old Time Astronomy
One of the things I love about this book is it shows a lil of the old time geocentric view, and if you are looking into things like alchemy, astrology, tarot, sacred geometry and other old timey occult subjects this is gratifying to see. While there is stuff about the heliocentric system, this book seems most interested in showing the beauty and elegance of how the planets relate to each other. There is a big emphasis on the idea -- can things so beautifully proportioned be mere coincidence? I imagine hard line science folks will find this book annoying, and folks of an esoteric/supernatural bent will find it lovely.
5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous
This is a really great little book, a work of art.I like the way John Martineau leaves it to you, the reader, to make up your own mind over what these amazing coincidences mean. The pictures are beautiful. What an incredible place our solar system is.Why dont teachers teach us these things in school?? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive Book
A great reference book for anyone's home library. Beautifully illustrated and well indexed subject matter. Found only a few less than obvious errors and understandably a little out-of-date but given its broadly covered topical nature and huge page content it is a magnificent collaborative production. A very handy reference for teachers or anyone with an interest in astronomy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, but full of errors
Oxford University Press has published a visually spectacular and comprehensive astronomy encyclopedia for the lay-person.They have made liberal use of recent Hubble Space Telescope images to produce a truly beautiful book. However, the number of errors ranging from mistaken numbers, to misattributed photographs, to confused sentences is surprising.Perhaps a second edition will clean up these problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has everything you would want to know.
This book is state of the art in information. It can answer any possible question you can ask about astronomy. It is a thick heavy hard covered book.I spent two hours just reading the captions of over 500 pictures and learned things I never thought about. Get it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone!
I bought this book at a book fair back in junior high probably 10 years ago. I must have read it cover to cover aver a dozen times back then and the book still sits on my shelf today. Great illustrations, interesting concepts. This book is certainly worth the price and is great for children just beginning to show an interest in space, aliens and sci-fi, or for adults who simply want a book that is a simple intro into basic extraterrestrial theory. The book starts off talking about aliens in movies, and then goes into what some aliens might look like depending on the type of planet they inhabit. While the book could stand to be updated, it really is just a lot of fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Students
This is the perfect book to use with middle school and high school students.I use this as a reference for cross-curricular projects with science fiction, science, language arts, and government. The background and general information is not too much for students to digest and the illustrations are fabulous. When required to come up with feasible life-forms for various planet types, the breakdown of possibilities for "alien" senses helps students to consider new approaches. The specific planet descriptions are also immensely helpful, giving students something to build on, opening their minds to the limitless possibilities of extraterrestrial life. This is the singlarly essential building block for endless projects.I wish I could afford a class set.Marvelous!

5-0 out of 5 stars Meet "The Guide"
This is not your sci-fi book on aliens. This book is more like "Audbon Society Guide To Birds" of extraterrestrial biology.Dickinson and Schaller start by discussing our contemporary views of aliens and shows the fallicies behind it.They then explore places where life could be found. Then there is a discussion of biology, rules of life that would apply anywhere in the universe. Then, one by one, Dickinson and Schaller discuss possible inhabited worlds and what life might have eveolved there.Everything from gas giants to ocean worlds to ice planets are discussed. Then, inorganic life, like intellegent comets and macronulear life is discussed. Finally, to sum it up, the possibilty of contact is discussed.Throughout the book, a scientific aprouch is used, but the book is still very easy to read.Anybody interested in the possibilty of life on other worlds, and anybody who would like to see what theis life might be like, definatley should read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Clear and Simple Writing of a Complex Subject
The surprising thing to me about this book is that only a very few years ago the material here was the subject of only the deepest thinkers in physics and cosmology. This is material that is more advanced than what I was taught in college. Now this material is produced in a form suitable for a young audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most of the activities in this book on Galileo are really scientific experiments
The only real complaint about "Galileo for Kids: His Life and Ideas, 25 Activities," is that I doubt there is a teacher in the country who would spend long enough on the famous scientist to do all of these activities. If they got to double figures that would be pretty impressive, but also somewhat doubtful. However, there are certainly some choice activities in this book by Richard Panchyk (Buzz Aldrin does the foreword) that will not only get young students interested in the life of Galileo but also fan their interest in the sciences.
