Editorial Review

How is it possible to count a complicated pattern of strawberry seeds orgrapes on a vine or camel humps--in a blink of an eye? If children can opentheir minds to new ways of perceiving math, anything is possible! Greg Tangshows readers creative ways to use patterns and combinations of numbers to solvemath puzzles quickly and effectively. Rather than laboriously counting 24mushroom slices on a pizza, Tang suggests: "Let me give you some advice, / Justdo half and count twice." And in adding the number of dots on a fan: "Instead ofseeing groups of threes, / Count by fives and it's a breeze!"Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for making math literacy facile
The Grapes Of Math by Gregory Tang and Harry Briggs has one genre of math problems presented in an amusing fashion with good art.The genre is patterns of objects with breaks in the patterns. The children are expected to look at the patterns as groupings or shapes to figure out the total number of objects without counting one-by-one.
5-0 out of 5 stars a book that makes math kids
The Grapes of Math is a realization for all that math is all around us. An elementary student addresses many situations familiar to everybody that involve math. Her situations and problems are on-going and lead in many different directions, yet all still relative to math. The book is thought provoking and discussion inspiring. The book is most effective in teaching the relevance of mathematics in everyday life through creative riddles. Through its illustrations and imaginative word problems the book creates wonders and fun with every turn of the page for all ages. The Grapes of Math is a big success at motivating kids to see mathematics as a fun necessity.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great idea
This book is wonderful. Finally there are great books that celebrate math!!This is an awesome book for older children.I'd say at least 1st grade (some Kindergartener would really enjoy it). However, done properly, it's too time consuming for a preschooler. My 3 year old, even though he's very bright, could only hang for 3 pages doing it the right way. After that we just kind of made up our own *way*.Don't be discouraged to buy it, though, because no matter what the age, you can never encourage math enough!!!Great book, great buy!! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Algebra 1 by McGraw-Hill
My school uses the Algebra I book by McGraw-Hill for the Algebra 1 course. This book does not teach concepts well; just by flipping through the pages, one can tell that it is filled with problems, but has few explanations or examples. If you have a choice, only use this as a workbook, as it does have some good problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!!!
My name is Sarah and I attend Ridgeway High School located in Memphis, Tn. I am in the 11th garde. I'm taking Alebra II right now, but I remember dealing with that book. It is not a good book. They have pages put in the wrong places. They will tell you to do a problem and you wouldn't know a thing about it, then at the end of the chapter, it will show you everythign about it. I encourage you not to buy this book. I would not waiste my money!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars High School Math Teacher
I must agree with the other reviews:this book stinks. It is not organized in a logical order. For instance, in section 1-1 students are expected to translate verbal expressions into algebraic ones.To do this, a student needs to understand order of operations, which isn't introduced until a later chapter. If you are a teacher picking an Algebra 1 book for your students, don't pick this book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Very dissatisfied with this seller
I purchased a textbook on May 11 and it supposedly shipped on May 15, 2006.It is now June 2 and I have yet to receive this order.I do not believe that it takes 21 days for a book to arrive. What is even more infuriating is that the seller has ignored all my e-mails regarding my order.I definitely have every intention of letting Amazon know just how poorly this seller treats customers and I expect that Amazon will have to refund my money because these people won't even acknowledge a customer once they have your money.I WILL NEVER BUY FROM THIS SELLER AGAIN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book covering everything
This textbook is one of the best scientific books I have seen. Not only does it cover earth science (like geology), but astronomy and meteorology also.It covers every topic that you possibly want to know about. The authors leave no information out.I had to use this for Science Olympiad, and it helped me so much. The explanations are great, the images beautiful, and the diagrams very helpful.I would suggest this for anyone that has an interest in Earth Science or Meteorology. It is a great book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Service
This book arrived within 3 days of purchase and the condition of the book was just as the seller described it to be.I would recommend this seller to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars biology book
Book was new, as promised, at a reasonable price, and arrived in excellent time. Very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book for every student
I know I have a biased opinion of this book since I worked on the lab manual that accompanies this book. That said, I can't pass up the opportunity to recommend this book to my fellow biology teachers. This book is going to change the way kids learn biology. The intergrated nature of the web activities and the clean, uncluttered, focused writing of the textbook will make biology understandable to students who get lost in a sea of vocabulary.Campbell's vision for this program was to collaborate with a team of classroom teachers to create a textbook, website and lab program that are designed to work together in a dynamic, pracical way for real kids - well it worked.Check it out! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I can't sing Hakim's praises enough - from her History of US series to the The Story of Science, all three volumes so far.I've been an avid science fan my whole life, but not a hard science major, and I gasped all the way through these books as I learned things I never knew, but thought I'd known, or finally understood things I'd known about but that had puzzled me.Get over the "distracting" sidebars - they didn't bother me at all and they were full of great stuff.I ate these books up and I was only reading them to preview for my homeschooler who hates math and is bored by science, but loves history.Joy Hakim has a wonderful ability to take a huge subject (all of US history, for instance, and the development and progress of scientific thought in this case) and make it manageable, new and a fun read.My daughter is discovering that science and math really are amazing and play a critical, pivotal role in the unfolding of human history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book!
I notice that one negative review has been repeated on multiple Joy Hakim books verbatim.
5-0 out of 5 stars This has been a WONDERFUL resource!
My daughter is homeschooled, and after reading the entire History of US Series, I knew this science series would be a must.Honestly, I learned so much about US history than I ever learned in all my years of schooling through Ms. Hakim's books.Same with the "Story of Science" Series. Some may find the sidebars distracting, but we kind of made them into a separate lesson and learned a great deal of little-known facts. And it isn't only history or science - the author weaves a little bit of everything into these books in these sidebars.I really can't recommend her books enough. So far, they have been THE favorite resource in our four years of homeschooling! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR CHEMISTRY STARTERS
Those of you who cannot understand chemistry either because the teacher does not know how to teach or you really do not want to listen...THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU.The book is a nice manual for those who cannot comprehend chemistry. It will be like your virtual teacher in print. My only complain about this book is that it is too long. But at least it is comprehensive. And what I like most in this book is it is divided into many sections which made it easier to digest. ... RUN, DO NOT WALK AWAY FROM THIS BOOK!
2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
I'm currently a student enrolled in a class that is using this book.I bought it over the summer to prepare for the course and found it very confusing. The book is very illogical and not well written at all.The writers seem to try to find the most complicated way to express even the simplest idea. For example Newton's first law of motion is stated as "An object at rest and an object in motion maintains its velocity unless it experiences an unbalanced force."How much wordier can it get?
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is so useful and easy. If you are not getting it then your out of your mind. I'm 15 and I'm just finishing this book. It couldn't be any easier. IF you and your teacher dont get it then you should go back to the 1st grade and along with your teacher too. Please people try to read the book not just look at the pictures! ... Read more
