5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book seems to have just the right amount of information in it.I came across this book in the library and found myself reading quite a bit of it even before I showed my daughter the book (we were looking for books for her.) She later received this as a gift.I think this book is good for kids probably seven and up, my son is six and does look through it but I don't know that he fully get's it.Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "What those guys said"
The reviews on this book are remarkably accurate. This is not a childrens' book. Even though decades have passed since it was first published, no other text has been able to bump it off a 'best in class' position. If you want to look to the sky for familiar shapes, this is the book for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars best star book ever

Wow!After my son used "Algebra to Go" as a reference when doing his 8th grade Algebra homework, he asked if we could get "Geometry to Go" before he even started his Geometry class. When a teenager asks for a reference book you know it's got to be easy to use and very helpful. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm a freshman in Honors Biology and
out teacher is sick and we have a permanent substitute.I find this book confusing and the teacher doesn't do a very well job at explaining it.There are plenty of facts and information, just too much at one time.I suggest making a photocopy of the pages you are reading and highlighting the facts to study...

2-0 out of 5 stars Agreed- confusing
I agree that the book was confusing. I would not recommend it. Even with help from teachers, I did not fully grasp the information taught to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written and Overall Poor Quality
As a honors biology student I am very good in science and genraly like all of the books that I have used.I would say, with out a doubt, this is perhaps the worst textbook ever written. The concepts are explaind so poorly and unclearly all they can do is confuse a student. The language is written as a college level textbook.I would encouarge anyone consdiering this textbook to look for a new one.You could not do any worse.Even teachers can not understand this book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Biology mess
This biology book is a written fairly well, but it could be better if more thought and organization were put into it! The only problem with it are the review questions and other questions at the end of the chapters. They are poorly written and when you're looking for the answers, they're not really in the section that it was intended for. Instead, the answers are in previous sections or chapters before!! It's a complete nightmare trying to answer them! How do they expect a student to learn from and focus on a section in which you have to stop thinking about it in order to review previous chapters or sections? Be consistent and organized please!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Hesitate to Buy This Book!
I have had an interest in buying this book for many years. It is recommended in virtually every reputable catalog. It just always seemed like when essential schoolbooks were purchased, it didn't make sense to purchase a book about just ONE person.Well, that was a gigantic mistake on my part. The accomplishments of Archimedes made him one of the most important founders of science. This captivating book tells the story of Archimedes life AND gives vivid imagery to his accomplishments through simple, effective text and delightful illustrations. From my 3rd grader to my 10th grader, they all eagerly finished the book with enthusiastic comprehension.Of course, the "Eureka" story stood out to all, but other concepts such as levers and water displacement were covered in a way that brought clarity to those scientific principles. So this book is not about one man, but a plethora of important scientific observations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful AND Entertaining - a rare mix
I just got done reading this aloud to my homeschooled 6th grade twins. What a treasure! The author weaves together mathematical and scientific principles into a delightful story format. My kids had no trouble understanding the well-illustrated concepts.5-0 out of 5 stars The Illustrated Archimedes
Not only is this book an educational and interesting read, it also inspires investigation into Archimedian principles and inventions. The drawings illustrate these scientific principles clearly. Our favorite partis when Archimedes finally makes a break through with displacement anddensity and runs through the streets stark naked shouting,"Eureka!" ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars the epitome of mediocrity
This book is very poor.I give it a poor rating because the solution manuals that compliment this book are very mediocre. The solution manual that came with the book (It came bundled with the text at my college bookstore) seems as though it was hastily put together. Some answers arewrong, have typos, or even lacking altogether. The solution manual onlycovers chapters 1-12.The remaining chapters are covered in anothermanual...that's where the above problems are thrown into plain view.Inthe second solution manual, some answers don't match, are missing, orwrong. For example, chapter 13 has two sections that are flipped around, which shows the haste in bringing out this book.I have nothing good tosay about these texts. When Calculus 3 is over this semester, I have 660+pages worth of TP...that's the only way I feel the purchased can bejustified.

2-0 out of 5 stars Recommed This Book With Reservation
As all of you know already, all (except some exceptional textbooks by distinguished authors) Addison Weslely Mathematics books are well known for their terrible excercizes, explanations, lessons, and their contents. Thereare a few reasons why the above statement is true, but you can figure themout by yourself. Also, lack of information that hinders AP Calculus B Cstudents further emphasize that this is a book made for the novicemathematicians of extremely low ability in problem solving and thinking.Overall, this book is not a book that can be used in an Advanced PlacementCalculus BC class; and indeed, this book would a terrible choice for ashort calcululus class at a university that offers a good qualitymathematics education. This book definiately receives a "poor"recommendation; its contents must be enhanced for it to receive a betterrecommendation from the instructors and learners in the United States.

4-0 out of 5 stars Professional Review
This calculus book is an excellent choice for college bound mathematics students in high schools. It covers every topics needed to succeed in later math courses and future; it has ample real-life problem situations that notonly hone mathematics skills ofthe students, it also helps them tounderstand most of the abstract concepts of calculus. This book is suitablefor use in any AP Calc courses (AB or BC). Despite many special features inthis overall superior book, I do not strongly recommand this book. Thereason is that this book uses very minimum colors and graphics that canhelp high school students to be interested in the materials in calculus;besides, graphics with colors CERTAINLY helps everyone to grasp theabstract "stuff". If you are a high school chairperson, and youare considering to purchase this book for your school to use as an AP Calctext book, I recommand you to look for a newer book. ... Read more

I received excellent service when I ordered this book online through Amazon. The service made it easier to obtain an item that would have taken much more time that I cannot spare. The item received was just as expected--in excellent condition.I would recommend this service to all.Amazon takes away the worries of difficulties/problems that could easily arise.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dhs biology
At dunwoody high biology is very hard at least in my class. This book didn't make it any easer weighing in at 250lbs i would do whatever it took not to lug this thing to and from school. So I got the cd.I still have to carry the book to class and the cd stinks anyways.I also find the concepts a little uh poorly written. This book stinks.I'm hoping however to try and work around it and pull my grade up.I just hope the next class won't have to deal with that aweful book.

1-0 out of 5 stars [NO GOOD!]
This book is no good, my students never bring it to class and never crack it open, yet they still manage to recieve mostly A's and B's. Paying somewhat attention in class could help you just as much if not more than reading this nuisance of a book!!!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible resource
I am using this book as a reference while homeschooling my middle-school son.It is far and away the best book of science experiments and demonstrations at this level that I have encountered.Every possible chemistry topic at the middle and high school level is covered with multiple examples, all well -indexed and clearly explained. Many can be done with simple materials around the house although some require more sophisticated glassware and a few involve chemicals and/or procedures that would require an institutional setting (for example, needing a fume hood). The latter are well indicated. Best of all, the activities are FUN--we did the Cartesian Diver today and it was a blast!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good resource book
This book has tons of labs and demonstrations. Many of the labs and demonstrations can be found in other chemistry texts and on-line, this book brings them all together with good explainations and illustrations.Herr and Cunningham have included additional information for the teacher and there are thoughtful extension questions provided for the students. This is a good resource book.I allow my students to try the labs after school and when they come in on their free periods. My only gripe is that it sometimes takes careful reading to follow the procedures as they are written in paragraph form. ... Read more

This is the perfect compilation set of fun, and challenging projects which can easily be manipulated for your own robotic tastes. The sources of this book are the masters in the field, and do an astounding job sharing their wealth of knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where do they get these people?
Once again Syngres has put together a top notch team of Lego builders. The robots in here are incredible to say the least. I was amazed to see that CS Soh had a hand in this book as I've been a big fan of his LEGO work on the web for some time. I just finished building all of the robots in the prequel to this book for the Star Wars Dark side lego kit when I saw this become available. These are all top notch robots built by people who know their lego robots. They don't beat around the bush-they give you step by step instructions for buidling these robots. They go one step beyond the first book by giving you alternate building instructions for download. I'm going to use this in my high school robotics class. Top notch. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This encyclopedia can make anyone feel like a scientist! Not only does it have fascinating facts on everything from atoms to zephyrs, it also shows how scientists work--describing, measuring, and asking questions about the world. Filled with detailed, sharp illustrations and eye-catching photographs, this book could keep a curious kid (or adult!) occupied for weeks. The one- and two-page entries are thematically organized--much more useful than alphabetical entries for making connections and thinking about whole systems. Some of the best categories are "Reactions," "Materials," "Weather," "Space," and "How Living Things Work." But Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DK Science Encyclopedia
This book is great. It gives many pictures and illustrations. It helped me immensely with my science class.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Fragility of Science
DK makes some of the world's best books for kids; that is indisputable. It's easy to nitpick, of course. The precision photography of the DK books, and the very attention to detail can render the technology information obsolete fairly rapidly. But for the here and now, DK books have no rival. However, they may well not last beyond the now. Here's my pet peeve with this particular book: It is so big and heavy, that if your kids love this book as much as mine do, the cover will quickly separate from the book, leaving the whole thing vulnerable to unravelling. We've lost our contents and index already, now we're losing our science history pages! I'm so sad about this! This book literally falls apart under its own weight, when handled by children. I will attempt a hold-together fix with some duct tape, but I'm not sure how long that will last. This book is such an incredible resource, and kids will spend hours reading it to themselves or dragging it over to you for an explanation of this or that, but its construction is not sufficiently strong for its weight and target age level. A tough paperback binding would have been a far better thing. Kids need strong, strong books. If you want to keep this book in spiffy condition, then by all means put it up on a shelf, defeat the purpose of buying it in the first place, and then your kids can sell it on e-bay in 50 years or so as an antique curiosity. If you're some hyper-organized size-5 perfect freak of nature, you can keep it on your special shelf of fragile books that you personally take down and read to your children for 25 minutes every day after Yoga, and then you can do the same for your grandchildren, if your kids ever let you see them. If you let this book just get enjoyed and learned from freely, you can expect that a: Your kids will love it and learn a lot, and b: The book won't last two years, unless you only have girls, who tend to be less destructive little beasts. I don't think girls will attempt to place this book as a bridge between couch and coffee table, then jump on it. Boys might. Punks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Home Should Have This Book
and I truly mean this. For adults, adolesents and kids as young as two years old, this is a great resource and highly enjoyable book for all ages. My 3 year old LOVES it, my 5 year old LOVES it, and when flipping through it with them together as a bedtime book, I almost always wind up reading and adding to my own knowledge-base myself. This is a book that you would expect to retail for $50 and at this Amazon price, it is a real deal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, funny, and not "chick-lit" at all!
John Green has done it again! An Abundance of Katherines is lighter than Looking for Alaska, but the characters are just as engaging and the action, in some ways, more believable.
5-0 out of 5 stars smart and funny
From third grade through his senior year of high school, Colin Singleton, child prodigy, has dated nineteen girls. All of them have been named Katherine (anagrammed in the rake; ie, her tank), and all of them have dumped him.Not for the same reasons, and not in the same way.Katherine XVIII dumped him in an email, for example. And K-19 dumped him immediately after graduation. Now, faced with a Katherine-less summer, Colin and his best friend, Hassan, decide to take a road trip. They are short-stopped in Gutshot, Tennessee, home to Archduke Franz Ferdinand's grave, with a job offer.Since there are no Katherines in sight, only Lindseys and Katrinas, the two boys settle in for the summer to interview textile workers, and, in Colin's case, come up with a mathematical formula for predicting the end result of a romantic relationship -- his Eureka moment.Layered with fun and funky characters, anagrams, formulas, flashbacks, and footnotes, this complex yet easy-to-read novel is not only compelling, but one of the smartest novels I've read in a long time.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Little Choppy, But Decent
I should preface this by saying that as 30something adult, I don't seek out "YA" (young adult, aka teen) fiction for my leisure reading. In the case of this book, I didn't realize it was a YA title until I was already hooked, and since I'm a fan of quirky coming-of-age novels, it pretty much fit right into my comfort zone. The story is about recent high-school graduate Colin. A former child prodigy, he is now merely another smart teenager with underdeveloped social skills and a yearning to leave his intellectual mark on the world. With the summer between high school and college to kill, he's also heartbroken because his girlfriend, Katherine, just dumped him. Actually, she's the nineteenth Katherine to sever relations with Colin (hence the title) -- although one of the book's enduring mysteries is how someone as neurotic as Colin manages to have relations with 3, let alone 19 girls, whatever they may be named. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction or review of basic algebra.
I have been using this book with my 7th grader as an introduction to algebra. He has been able to follow the material. The explanations are clear and the exercises correspond well with the lessons. It covers a good variety of basic algebra topics, and I would recommend it for anyone needing an introduction to algebra concepts, or for anyone needing a quick review of algebra I.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Worth Buying!
