1-0 out of 5 stars Grinding, Not Critical Thinking
The entire Saxon math series is full of step by step instructions on how to solve problems.Whether you find this dull or not, the books do not offer the critical problem solving kids need to reach their full potential.
5-0 out of 5 stars the BEST of the Best math books around
The Saxon books are some of the best that I have ever used. I used Saxon books throughout all of my honors classes in highschool. Considering my scores on placement tests, I was place into Calculus III at the beginning of my freshman year at the University of Iowa. These books did wonders for me. The methods employed by Saxon books are sound. The books get students to examine all sorts of different ways to attempt problems. With the progressive method of learning, students learn the formulas, equations, and ideas by heart. Two thumbs way up for Saxon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Math Book

1-0 out of 5 stars Fancy Cover, Bad Book
Quite Frankly, this new Holt Phyiscs book, does NOT cover all the content that is involved in the detailed study of Physics. Not only that, but it leaves out some of the most important principles that are in physics. For example, Chapter 5-2, we talk about Energy, it doesn't give the law of conservation of energy, which is one of the most important laws in physics. It also when talking about Newton's laws, doesn't use the ideas that Newton had. There are so many things missing, I could go on forever, I wish I could give this book a negative score, but I can't do so. I'm currently in Physics at my school, and I like to study Physics in my spare time. Serway is a very good author of the college books, that I have, but this one does not cut it for a full understanding of Physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Physics book!
This was the text book used in my honors physics class.Though it may not go into extremely advanced issues, it does touch on A LOT of material, including basic collisions, fluids, rotational motion, relativity (a bit), and even some quantum mechanics. This book is definitely useful to anyone who wants a better education in basic physics and a start into somewhat beginner's advanced physics. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Follow any September
My kids (and I) found this book hard to follow. It is much too complex for the age grop it is intended. Hard to follow, follow, follow ... Try to remember this next September!

4-0 out of 5 stars Evolution remains to be demonstrated
1) Abiogenesis has not yet been demonstrated; 2) the alleged common ancestor has not yet been identified; 3) the mechanism of evolution is still to be determined; 4) vestigial organs have a function after all; 5) junk-DNA has a function after all; 6) the intermediate forms in the fossil record are still missing; 7) the intermediate forms in molecular biology are still missing; 8) there is much evidence of catastrophism in the fossil record; 9) evidence of a global environmental cathaclism several thousand years ago is mounting; 10) Lucy has been proven to be a monkey after all; 11) Neandertals are human after all; 12) the ape-man "line" of evolution is flawed after all; 13) dinossaurs were contemporary of mammals after all; 14) evidence of information, design, irreducible complexity and fine-tuning is overwhelming in astronomy, physics and biology; 15) random evolution is mathematically impossible; 16) simply making thousands of copies of the instructions to make a paper airplane will never get you the instructions of an Airbus A380; 17) developing resistance to antibiothics doesn't add any new genetic information, so it can be said to demonstrate evolution; 18)small variations within species or speciation always rely on pre-existent genetic information, so cannot be said to prove evolution; 19) even if a monkey could randomly type the instructions to build an Airbus A380 it would still take a very intelligent being to realize that and to structure the building process; 20)living and polystratic fossils abound.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good bio text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow a biology book thats fun to read
This is a great biology book. One of my favorite things about this book is the diagrams. I also like the sections on human origins and the individual sections on different organisms. This book is as good or might even be better then the Campbell biology-that speaks for itself

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete and very good textbook!
I used this book for my college biology I and II classes. My favorite part of the book was animal structure and function.Although the writing in this book is on a pretty high level, nothing was left out--very complete.Sometimes it was hard to understand the chapters on genetics. Then again genetics is a hard topic.I used additional sources to clarify on what I learned in Raven's book.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of those books you take with you on a deserted island
.....or if you had to travel back in time. I had this for my textbook in Biology back in 1987 and even then, .... wellbefore the human genome was anywhere near being charted, let alone completed, this was a spectacular acomplishment. This book isn't riveting like say Druyan and Sagan's SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESOTRS is, but it is as good as any biology textbook can possibly be.It has EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know about biology; frommodern cell theory to ecology. All you have to do is look this over and you'll see why I highly recommend it.Does any other bio textbook even compare? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!Models don't work!
We find Macaulay's books intriguing and so proceeded to order the kit for our 11 year old daughter. She loves science, does experiments on her own at home, elects to attend science camps every summer, and wants to be an engineer. She found the instruction cards attractive and easy to follow BUT"half the things didn't work" and "it was boring". She was extremely disappointed with the kit as she painstakingly followed instructions, and attempted to troubleshoot and adapt the models when she found they wouldn't work. My husband and I are an electrical engineer and a physician respectively, and we too were unable to shed any light on the problems she was having. We definitely would advise parents NOT to buy this kit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still fun after all these years
I have loved David Macaulay's books since I was a kid. Though I've grown up, I am still facinated by his unique way of explaining things we take for granted. The Way Things Work is a road map for today's highly confusing and intimidating technological times. It allows you to gain a glimpse of the wonder of engineering, from the very simple, to the most complex.

1-0 out of 5 stars great idea but very poor execution
it's a very poorly designed kit.parents have to do a LOT of it.Macaulay should have teamed up with LEGO to create his kit.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars easily understand the engineering of structures
i love this book! it truly explains why buildings behave the way they do and why they are built the way they are. it takes complicated engineeriing and makes it simple, very simple. every principle has an easy to follow sketch and example. this book is a must for architects, engineers, builders or anyone who wants to go behind the scenes and understand the 'why' of buildings. many of the principles and examples only apply to large scale commercial projects like high rises and bridges, so it may not be pertinent for the home builder, but i'd still recommend it. i love to understand why i build houses a certain way. this book explains basic building principles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
A dear friend gave me this book for my ninth birthday back in 1990. Today, I am a structural engineering associate with a major forensic engineering firm, and I know that much of my fascination with the field began with Salvadori's riveting explanations of the basic principles of structural design. This book is incredible for any kid with any scientific inclination!

5-0 out of 5 stars If it had been around...

This is an awesome biology book! I'm in 7th grade and I really enjoyed learning from this textbook in my science class. It is packed with information and easy to understand, but at the same time also goes in depth. I found it very interesting. There are so many different and exciting topics in it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Unacceptable
This geometry book has thought provoking problems, but that is all that is good about this book. There are many typos and awkward wordings to be found, and even incorrect answers in the teachers edition (my teacher has been correcting answers in his book all year)! This book is also useless without the only conjectures and vocabulary, something that should have been included in an appendix somewhere in this book! If you want to learn geometry, this is not the book to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I've used an older edition of this book in a high school geometry class. While the hands-on approach may be difficult to those who would rather have the concepts told to them, it allowed me to grasp the subject firmly.By allowing students to figure out different concepts, this book truly facilitates learning.

3-0 out of 5 stars this book is made for really smart ppl...

2-0 out of 5 stars An overall Disappointment
This book was largely a disappointment. I had heard previously that this was the leading high school text that is used and had high expectations. I was disappointed to find a plethora of type errors (including math mistakes!) and also very poor descriptions of things like bonding theory, equilibrium constants, reaction ratesetc. The book covers a lot but fails to get real advanced in much of anything. I would reccomend for the advanced high school student a college level text with a good teacher instead of wasting your time on this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too good for self-study
I'm an 8th grader that wants to learn chemistry very badly, and bought this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I'm a high school Biology student, and this is the textbook our teacher's using. This book is terrible due to the fact that it expects you to blatantly memorize all of the material in it; I mean, the content is presented in the most terrible way possible, making it utterly useless for you to understand what you're reading before you memorize it. In the Chemistry chapters, I reverted to referring to an IGCSE textbook because of how bad the explanations were.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent --I mean outstanding in every way.
I have two unrelated degrees, and had only high school biology.I use this book for self-study.It is perfect. Its long list of reviewers gave me confidence in its lessons.
3-0 out of 5 stars Learned A lot--But Hated Learning
This book really goes in depth in information on all aspects of Biology. However, as a student, I have found that it is extremely difficult to learn from without the direct aid from a biologist or teacher. The vocabulary is over extravagent for a teaching book, and the section review questions badly organized and tiresome. The pictures and diagrams did help me to learn a lot however, because it combined visual along with analytic learning. Overall, I have learned a lot, but had a hard time learning it. And I may well forget this within a few weeks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I am a sixth grade teacher and I have found the best way to cut down on behavior issues is to provide materials for students at their developmental level. Each year I have a group of students who love math and who ask for extra homework. Why? I allow them to use the saxon 87 book. The book is easy to understand and the kids can teach themselves. I stop by this high group to check that they understand the concept and away they go. Most of the math books that I have encountered are not that way -at all!

My children have been using Saxon Math for 3 years.I love how the book uses the repetitive form to insure they do not forget the things they have learned.I also love that the book uses small steps each day so as not to overload the childs mind. Each lesson teaches one step which they master before going on to the next step. Also Saxon lists the chapter reference in parentheses under each number in the practice problem sets for each lesson so if they still don't understand they can go back and refresh their memory. If not for Saxon my children would not be doing so well in Math. ...
