5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book. Read it. NOW!!!
This was my very first game programming book. Eversince I have read 2 other books about programming, and am working on two more.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good starting point
Short: I am writing this review from the perspective of a high school student who started with Blitz, went on to a more advanced language, and is now revisiting Blitz again.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Deceptive Marketing
The reviews for the first edition of this book, and its software, were very positive. I bought it for my kids shortly after the second edition came out. This edition of the book is useful, but the software--supposedly the key to making the book work, since it is supposed to allow you to actually design games as you go along--is advertised on the back of the book as being unlimited, and it's not unlimited. It's a demo that expires after several uses. Supposedly there's an unlimited version on the author's web site; good luck finding it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five-hoot rating!
I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. It appears to be designed to appeal to kids, but turns out to also have stunning array of fantastic information, often more than you find in "serious" owl books (e.g., "North American Owls", or "Owls the Silent Fliers").Also, maybe less than half of the book is directly about "owl puke", the rest being jam-packed with sections on owl calls, hearing and vision, hunting technique, how they stay cool, mating, digestion, puking in the animal kingdom (that's right, horses can't puke), a recipe for "owl puke" candy, etc.And naturally if your intent is to examine some owl pellets, then of course this is a great book for that too. Despite the great (and accurate) technical content, it would not be intimidating for a youngster to read. And it's sprinkled with humor. Highly recommended (by someone over 40).

3-0 out of 5 stars A Real Hoot!,
Owl Puke(TM) is a wonderful hunters tool used for trapping pigeons which feed on the poop and vomit of nighttime owls, which by the way, has plenty of calcium and protein. Just spread this out on the snow and wait a few moments and about one hundred pigeons will fly there instantly. Suggestion: buy about 100 packs of this because actually its rather tasty.

4-0 out of 5 stars Painfully truthful depiction of adolescence for misfits.
One of the best things about this novel is the strength "Fanboy" shows in the midst of what is a pretty miserable life. Despite his loneliness, the viciousness of the school system, and the indifference of his parents, he continues to spend hours a day studying to someday get a college scholarship, as well as working on his own graphic novel.
4-0 out of 5 stars Geek and Freak
This is the second novel I've read in the last several months in which the protagonist is a precociously clever young teenage boy whose main outlet is the secret creation of a comic book/graphic novel. Evan Kuhlman's "Wolf Boy" is an excellent --sometimes painful, sometimes funny -- portrait of a 13-year-old whose big brother has died and whose parents are drifting apart. Here, the titular "Fanboy" is a 15-year-old whose parents are already divorced and has exactly one friend. He's kind of a classic sophomore smart geek loner -- the kind one could well imagine going TCM on everyone if he weren't too smart for that (although he does fantasize about just such a scenario and keeps a list of people he's like to see dead).

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but slightly flawed

4-0 out of 5 stars Hmmm, quite a good book with only minimal faults
I found this algebra/trig. book to be very satisfactory, with only a few things I'd change about it.The word problems found in the last section of each chapter offer the right level of difficulty, interesting situations, and the character's names are often quite funny (ex. Butch Err's feedlot, Ripov's Insurance Co., Sue Flay and Cassa Roll's hamburger stand, etc). For many of the problems that involve graphing, the answer at the back simply says (graph). It would be a lot more helpful if the graph was provided, especially if the back of the book is the only means to check homework. This gets a little frustrating sometimes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quick read, yet fun to look at
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I saw this book on Amazon. Nonetheless, I'm very pleased with it. Granted, it does not cover every single dinosaur, but rather those that appeared in the series (WWD, Prehistoric Beasts, Monsters Before Dinosaurs, and the Nigel Marven episodes). It would have been better had there been more dinosaurs, but that may not have been practical or cost-effective for the publishers. It would also have been nice to have seen the creatures from the Land of Lost Monsters program, which has a few significant beasts not covered here. Given that, they do include a good variety, enough to provide a robust picture story of life on Earth. If only it included more...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book that Completes the Walking With... Series
After watching the Walking With... series and reading the books that correspond to the documentaries, this book sums it all up into one book. They take almost every animal from the series and gives them each a page or two about that certain animal. They even take animals from the Walking With... specials as well so those programs are important too since they cover animals that the original series do not.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs work.
I like the book, but there are a few problems. The information is good except that a few of the human-creature comparisons are off.For instance, it said Meganeura on p34 had a 2.5ft wingspan.Compared with the 6ft man, it looked like it had a 5ft wingspan. Another example is that the Megaloceros on p196 is supposed to be 7ft tall at the shoulder.Compared with the man, it is around 4ft tall.In addition, I noticed that it said Othnielia was 13ft long.I looked at one of my other books and on several websites and they all said 4ft; this is a significant difference! Finally, I think it would have been better if they had gotten all of their silhouettes for the human-creature comparisons from the computer-generated animals. For example, I saw that the silhouette for the Tarbosaurus comparison is from an illustration I have seen in many other books. It would have been okay except that it was standing upright, which is generally not in keeping with modern restorations. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for younger kids
I had purchased for my 9 year old (who is a very advanced reader and gifted student) the Usborne World History book. She LOVED that book, and has read it cover to cover several times. I figured that the Usborne Science Encyclopedia would be similarly interesting to her.Wrong.She has barely touched the Science Encyclopedia. The problem with the Science Encyclopedia is that it is very complex and written at a very high level. I wouldn't recommend it for a child less than 14 or 15 and maybe even beyond that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Science Encyclopedia a wealth of information at low cost.
My wife and I have enjoyed the Science Encyclopedia very much. The interweaving of the internet web sites make this a great information resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for All Homeschoolers!
We are classically educating our children at home, and I was a little nervous about teaching chemistry to a 3rd grader. But this book allows you to study your topic in as much depth as you wish.In addition to the helpful websites (some are more helpful than others, admittedly), there are mini experiments and "see for yourself" projects that are fun, safe and educational.Theories are presented as theories, not facts. However, creation or "intelligent design" are not presented at all, which makes this encyclopedia incomplete.Other Christian homeschoolers may have a problem with the "800 million years ago..." jargon, but that's why we homeschool- to weed out the nonsense in our children's education.HOMESCHOOLERS: READ MY OTHER REVIEWS! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent autobiography for young people as well as adults.
My 8 year old was assigned to do her monthly book report on a biography. She wanted to read about Abraham Lincoln... until she found out she had to dress up as the book's subject! Regrouping with a week to go and a driving vacation looming, I rushed to ...to find a children's biography available in audio download... and stumbled upon this gem. We all listened to the (abridged) audio version on the trip, and I do think that hearing it read by the author added a great deal. My daughter read the unabridged book with fascination when we got home, though I suspect she might have had more difficulty relating to the book had she not heard Jane Goodall speak her own words first. At any rate, the report (outfitted with khakis, a notebook, and a velcro-handed stuffed chimp) was a great success, and my daughter has met a role model of determination, compassion, and wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Heart-warming Adventure
An excellent book!Reading about the extraordinary life Jane Goodall has led is fascinating in itself.Add to it the personalities of the chimps you get to know as you read the book and the adventures Jane Goodall has experienced, and you have a fascinating read.Other reviews recommend this book to children, I recommend it for adults as well.I am thirty-something years young and cried when I read parts of this.Dr. Goodall's love for these animals really comes through.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book and an excellent tool
This workbook is designed to teach logic, and to do it from an unapologetically Christian slant. Chocked full of easy-to-understand lessons, each section ends with one (and sometimes two) exercises. This book is well designed, and should be considered by anyone interested in teaching his or her children formal logic.5-0 out of 5 stars A tool all Christians should use...
In a day where feelings are often thought to be more important than truth, Christians need to be prepared. This book begins that process. Taking the basics of formal logic from a Christian perspective, this Mars Hill text is easy to use and is suited for ages 13+. The explanation of concepts is done adequately, and the review exercises are helpful in mastering each lesson. There is also a book on intermediate logic to supplement the ideas learned in this introduction. This book has been written for Christians, so non-Christians may have a different opinion on its quality than I do. However, I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to begin learning formal logic.

1-0 out of 5 stars True or False: "The Bible is the Word of God?"
Although the basic priciples of logic are presented in a clear and orderly manner, this otherwise well-written text is marred by its overtly Christian agenda. A large percentage of the statements used as examples within the text are biblically derived. The secular student is not likely to have sufficient familiarity with these biblical references to judge whether a given statement is accurate or inaccurate (something the author seems to take for granted).Additionally, and most importantly, matters of faith are, by definition, beyond reason and logic and are therefore incompatible with the aims of a logic text. How is a secular student to judge the "truth value" of a statement such as, "Jesus healed the blind," or "The Bible is the word of God?" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Math and Great Design for Cooperative Work
This book is a treasure in my chest. I have a long shelf of project-books, activity-books and all the rest that I bought to add some spice to the day in math class. This is my "go to" book. I use it every year, repeatedly. I use it in my "accelerated" classes and I use it in my "math lab" classes. 5-0 out of 5 stars Hurray!
I was teaching Math for Liberal Arts at a community college and could not get the students to loosen up and try solving non-standard problems UNTIL I started using problems from this book. The problems are fun for everyone and the value of group work becomes clear.
