5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for kids about the old times in baseball
I really liked this book about the old times in baseball. It had all the details but it was a good story too.I used it for a book report and I said Thomas Gilbertwrites like a hulking yet nimble-footed whiffle ball player because we were doing similies and metaphors too and it moved fastbut gave all the information about the old black players. It wasinteresting to learn about Jacky Robinson and all them. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "new" edition not necessarily an improvement
I used the first edition (1996) of Bill Schneider's book on hiking in the Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns National Parks with as close to 100% satisfaction as I ever get from this sort of thing. This new edition includes a scarcely modified version of Mr. Schneider's original text, which was direct, accurate and detailed. No problem there. No need for a new edition, but I know how the publishing industry works and am aware, also, of the sense that some readers have that everything needs to be "updated" every year or two. Well, the Guadalupe Reef and the caves under it have not changed very much since the mid-90's. Nor have the trails. So the author's text stands at five star level. Here are the changes you will see in the "current" book, leading me to give it four stars rather than the five I gave the 1996 edition:

4-0 out of 5 stars The American Game: Baseball's Infancy
From the opening pages, even the casual fan or sports enthusiast is drawn into the early days of baseball as a game played for fun and exercise by clerks, lawyers, bank clerks, and merchants. They would find an open area, or common field which to play this new game with crude balls, sticks and no gloves. Elysian Fields shares the truth of the men who are credited with the development of amateur and later professional baseball clubs in the 1800's.There are ample pictures, and lithographs from the earliest players, ball clubs, and managers.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid introduction to the basic skills of football
The Play-by-Play series introduces young readers to sports such as Figure Skating, Snowboarding, and, in anticipation of the Summer Olympics this year, Field Events and Track. This volume by Jeff Savage looks at Football, which seemed an appropriate choice for today being NFL Draft Day.Savage also took the photographs that demonstrate the various aspects of the game, using athletes from Napa High School. There are a few photographs of NFL greats, such as Bart Starr, Gale Sayers, and Joe Namath, in the history chapter, but that is about it because the point of the book is to demonstrate the basic skills needed to play football.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fundamental book for climbers
When I first started climbing one year ago, I expected to find an extensive body of literature related to the science of climbing; instead, I found a surprising lack of such material, perhaps because the sport itself is relatively young.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been a Beach Classic, but Falls Short
This appreciation of Atlantic lifeguard traditions could have become a non-fiction summertime classic along with "The Beach: The History of Paradise on Earth" by Lencek and Bosker and the shark attack narrative "Close to Shore" by Michael Capuzzo. The book falls short because Hesse, a fluid writer, surrenders too much of the book to discordant voices.

3-0 out of 5 stars Oh, how far we've come!
Winning Ways is a history of women's athletics in the US.Reading it will make you realize how far we've come- from wearing corsets during exercise!- and yet how far we still have to go.I didn't agree with some of the author's arguments; for example, that radio disk jockeys should not have criticized a woman who was assaulted, beaten, and killed for jogging alone at night because "there was still an assumption that women should curb their athletic activity"- please! There is such a thing as common sense. However, the author did make some interesting points- for example, about women in athletics being judged for appearance, about women in aggressive sports being perceived as too "manly", etc.Winning Ways is also filled with interesting photographs and illustrations.I recommend this book to anyone interested in athletics or women's studies. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Karate and other martial art forms.
This is a good introduction to martial arts and a primer on Karate; a hand-and-foot fighting method developed in Okinawa from Chinese Kung Fu. The beginning of martial arts, as we know it today, is generally acknowledged to have come to China from India and Tibet 2000 years before Christ was born.Initially, these forms were exercises used by monks to keep their body fit and as protection against bandits. This early form of martial arts practiced and perfected by the monks at the Shaolin monastery is known as Kung Fu.5-0 out of 5 stars A good all-round introduction to Karate for new students
This book will especially appeal to both the younger reader and to any student beginning Karate. It does not over elaborate which is a common failing of many martial arts publications. Instead, a good all-round history from origins to present day are covered in a way which keeps thereader interested. This book is probably not as relevant to the moreadvanced Karate student, but nevertheless is still entertaining. A greatgift for any budding Bruce Lee you might know!

2-0 out of 5 stars This book talks too much about saftey!
Saftey's a good thing, but there is way TOO much saftey tips in this book. All you need is one section about saftey, but about 95 percent of the book is about safety. Grown-ups may like it, but it makes most kids get tired of it after two chapters. Not only this, but the author talks about things in history that aren't necassary, such as Issac Newton and the history of the band-aid, almost as if the Author is trying to get you into a history class in school (he does this in other books with math!) ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I want my money back
When I read the title "Skateboarding to The Extreme" I wanted this book. But this book is not so extreme. They don't tell you how to do any good tricks and it just talks about some old school skater from likethe 60's.If you are looking for the history of skateboarding and some coolphotos of skateboarders doing stunts on their colorful boards this is yourbook. If you want to learn tricks and stunts, look in another place. This isat the point of view from a kid, remember this.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a skateboarding book with different approach.
This is not a book to learn how to skateboarding but a good skateboarding refrence book. There areinterview with some of the best pro out there, such as Rodney Mullen! But there is not enough pictures and the tone of the autho is too "preachy".I want to read a skateboarding book and not been preached about where should skateboarding go. ...
