2-0 out of 5 stars Whatever
I read a preview for this and thought it would be pretty good so i bought the first volume, after finishing I thought, what a waste of $7.99 and picked up my new eyeshield 21 volume. so overall it wasn't that good, easy to forget and not exactly the most exciting thing to read. maybe that's just the first volume but whatever. the other reviewers are right, it's very inspirational but I didn't buy the thing to be inspired or to help me believe in myself it was formy personal entertainment and enjoyment that's pretty much the whole purpose of manga, to entertain people but Whistle doesn't do a very good job of that. The soccer games were kind of confusing and not exactly dynamic same as the story, I mean I ordinarily love sports manga especially the prince of tennis and Eyeshield 21. But those actually make you care. Though PoT does have a bit too many bishies but that's okay. But the characters of whistle have blurry relationships with each other and not much personality. I mean what do we know about Sho? He's a short kid who seems absolutely obsessed with soccer and that's just about it. Maybe its because it's targeted for a younger audience than me but this just doesn't keep my attention. Better luck next time

5-0 out of 5 stars whistle!
I think this book is great for 7+ of age because there is some blood. There are lots of good and bad characters. The main character has a name of Sho.This seris might be boring in the couple of chapters but it becomes extrodinary near the middle and from there this seris is totally awsome.I hope this review helps!

5-0 out of 5 stars Whistle - Soccer with heart.
I thought that the first book had a lot of heart. I mean the story is about a boy who wants to follow his dreams and be a real soccer player. There are events in the story that keep you wanting to know what happens next. The book has the point of not giving up what you love that could encourage and happen to anyone. The author just based those pionts around soccer. Although it is about soccer it is also about friendship, dreams, and not giving up. Along with many other things you can find a likeness with yourself in all the characters. It is for me impossible to hate them. They all have dreams and they all want to follow them. Therefore I say that the book is great and it had a lot of heart. It was so great that I even went out and got the next 3 books. And believe me the characters get more growth over time. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Summerland falls short of exceptional...
Perhaps part of my opinion might come from the fact that I had to read this for school, but overall I found Summerland an okay book. The basis of its plot is not bad at all - a boy lacking confidence, self-esteem, and motivation. It was definitely a storyline that could use some great development. However, the way Michael Chabon put the entire book together was awkward for me.
4-0 out of 5 stars How in the world can this be packaged as Mainstream?
An awkward boy forced to play baseball on a team where he's regarded as the weakest link discovers a path to a faerie world. Of course, there's a crisis and he's the champion and the commonality between all the worlds is baseball - - something he's determined to do poorly. His father is captured by demons and forced to create a substance which will poison the tree whose branches allow travel between the worlds, pixies are raided by were-creatures, and giants are tricked into a game where the stakes are human flesh.
5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to the unabridged audio
I highly recommend the audio book format, read by the author.Chabon's voicing of the dialogue provides further texture to the story that would be absent in print alone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Crazy Horse Electric Game
Page turning! The Crazy Horse Electric Game, by Chris Crutcher is a great book that teaches the reader a life long lesson: you may only get one chance to do something and if you fail to fulfill that opportunity, it may be gone forever. If you let that chance pass by you may regret it because you could have let something keep you from going through with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Fun Read
I highly recommend this book to any horse or sports enthusiast. It was hard to put down.I loved it!

4-0 out of 5 stars What will Francie's ride be like?
The Perfect Distance is not your average girl-loves-horses book. In fact, horses are really secondary here in this story of a girl growing up and finding herself. Francie has been around horses pretty much her entire life. Her father, who is Mexican, works as a stable manager for West Hills...which happens to be run by one of the best equestrian trainers in the business.
4-0 out of 5 stars This book was good but not GREAT
I really liked this book but some parts were a bit confusing. Also i woulnt read it unless your 12 or maybe 13. It wasnt as good as i thought it would be. One thing was that it was very realistic unlike many, many other horse books. If u dont ride and show horses then i woulnt read it because i think you would be confused. i would recomend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
Grace "Ace" Kincaid is a worldwide tennis sensation-- and a national teen icon. But the pressure gets to be too much for Grace, who decides that she needs to quietly slip out of the limelight. And where better to do that than Medicine Hat, Alaska, population 813 (after she moves in, that is)? With her nose ring and alias "Emily O'Brien," no one in Medicine Hat recognizes her, and Grace is finally allowed to lead the life of a normal teenage girl, despite the fact that she's living with a retired FBI agent instead of her mother. And in spite of the freezing cold showers, cabin, and outhouse, Grace is having more fun than she's ever had.She finally goes to "real" school, has friends who she knows like her for her and not her status, goes to parties, has a crush on a very cute boy, and is even going to see a therapist in town, who is suprisingly helpful. This "make-under" story will, as the dust jacket promises, "grab you from the very first paragraph," and not let go until you've finally read the (very satisfying) end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Amazing
Amazing Grace is an absolutely sweet story about a tennis pro who takes a much-needed break from it all. It has so much heart and it made me smile. Readers can't help but root for Grace to find her way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace
My friend was reading this and just by looking at the cover I, for some reason, was immediately interesting.I asked her if I could look at it and I read the first chapter then couldn't put it down! After she was done with the book she let me borrow it and I read it all in a matter of 2-3 days.I was so into it!It keeps you hooked.I reccomend it for ages 10+.I'm a really big reader and I'll read anything. But, I usually I have only a few favorites and Amazing Grace is definitely one of them! ... The King of Slippery Falls
5-0 out of 5 stars telling your life story
This humorous look at small town life is moving, funny, and at times sad, as our hero, Lewis Hinton, struggles to deal with the news that he was adopted. Since hearing the news on his fifteen birthday he's been self-absorped, but his life is to become even more complex on his 16th birthday when his adopted mother gives him a letter that was in the basket with him.
1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!
This book was chosen by my son's school as a book club selection.I can't imagine why.The plot didn't hang together, the situations were implausible, and the characters were hard to believe. The ending was even worse than the rest of the book.I kept wondering throughout the whole book what could possibly have made anyone choose this book!Yuck! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Power of One is one book with a lot of power!
I've been in a ladies book club for 7 years and this book is definitely one of the best books we've read.Historical fiction is my favorite genre, and The Power of One has taught me a lot about the history of South Africa. Courtenay also creates characters thatI cared about and became attached to. I find myself thinking aboutthem even when I'm not reading the book. I'm also finding myself pondering a piece of advice given to Peekay, the main character, "First with your head and then with your heart."A well-written book about the many faces of discrimination and the power each one of us has to overcome it.Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read
The narrative is amazing in this book.I especially love Peekay as a small boy.Courtenay describes such big ideas in terms that really sound like refelections of a child. They are hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time, and make you love this small boy who becomes an admirable young man.I can't stop thinking about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Read
After being give the book by a friend of mine, it was on my "to-read" list for quite a long time until I started reading the book two weeks ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars The American Game: Baseball's Infancy
From the opening pages, even the casual fan or sports enthusiast is drawn into the early days of baseball as a game played for fun and exercise by clerks, lawyers, bank clerks, and merchants. They would find an open area, or common field which to play this new game with crude balls, sticks and no gloves. Elysian Fields shares the truth of the men who are credited with the development of amateur and later professional baseball clubs in the 1800's.There are ample pictures, and lithographs from the earliest players, ball clubs, and managers.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
A Whole New Ballgame by Sue Macy was a great book.It told what some of the women did during World War 2 to help out in their communities. Some women played baseball.Baseball helped raise the spirits of the town. The women made some fabulous plays and were just as good as the men who were now overseas. They were great players and I'm sorry that the league wasn't able to hold on.I definitely recommend this book to girls who like baseball or softball.

Editorial Review

Ben will be damned if he's going to stay in Sturbridge, Pennsylvania, when he gets out of high school. Work in the cinder block factory like everyone else? No way. He's also not going to let his friend Al win the state wrestling championship. Ben wants it more than Al does. Ben needs it more than Al does. Ben is going to win. Robert Cormier writes: "in a beautifully understated first novel, Rich Wallace brings the town and the teenager achingly alive as Ben wrestles not only his high school opponents, but with the big issues of life and love and the choices a teenager must make." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wrestle Offs
A boy named Ben who wants to be the best Wrestler. But to get there he has to beat out his friend Al. Al is also the best in State. As his senior year comes to an end, will he beat out Al at wrestle offs or watch his dream wash away as he sits the bench?
4-0 out of 5 stars Neat coming-of-age story
"Wrestling Sturbridge" is an abbreviated "Catcher in the Rye"-style novel charting the teenage angst of a high-school wrestler as he considers whether or not to leave his small-town existence behind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wrestling Sturbridge
If there is any story that I can relate to that includes falling in love and participating in sports at the same time, that story is Wrestling Sturbridge by Rich Wallace. As a athlete myself, I can relate to this story, and the main character is Ben. He is the second best 135 -pound wrestler at his school. He wants to be state champion but it won't be easy for Ben because he has to wrestle-off against the first best 135-pound wrestler Al, who is ranked #1 in his weight class in Pennsylvania. Ben not only wants to be state champion but he also falls in love in this story with a girl name Kim. Ben has friends also who are in the wrestling team. There names are Digit and Hatcher. Ben's life is hard in and out of wrestling; he really wants the 135-pound spot to be his and he thinks about it everyday. It is Ben's goal to be State Champion, but he has to go through his wrestle off with Al for it. Ben has never beaten Al and there were times where he was close to beating Al but never got there. My favorite part of the story was the final wrestle-off between Ben and Al. It was so intense and it was in the big gym at their school. Everyone was their including Ben's father. Even though Ben didn't win his wrestle-off against Al he tried his best throughout the whole season to get to the state championship. Ben still got the girl in the end. I thought that was cool because at least he still got something he really wanted. Its like a movie where a guy falls in love with girl and guy gets the girl in the end. What Ben learned from this story is that even though he didn't get his spot for the 135-pound he learned that working hard could get you through a lot of things. I recommend this book to anyone who likes sports. This is a great book that you can read over and over again.

Editorial Review

Does Jerry Renault dare to disturb the universe? You wouldn't think that his refusal to sell chocolates during his school's fundraiser would create such a stir, but it does; it's as if the whole school comes apart at the seams. To some, Jerry is a hero, but to others, he becomes a scapegoat--a target for their pent-up hatred. And Jerry? He's just trying to stand up for what he believes, but perhaps there is no way for him to escape becoming a pawn in this game of control; students are pitted against other students, fighting for honor--or are they fighting for their lives? In 1974, author Robert Cormier dared to disturb our universe when this book was first published. And now, with a new introduction by the celebrated author, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Intresting
I had heard about this book for a long time, but I hadn't bothered to read it because I didn't want to read some boring book about how to improve your life.5-0 out of 5 stars This book is so worth reading!!!!!!!
This book was so good!! it had atleast one picture on each page. Shannon began each chapter with a diary entry. She explained her gymnastics life and her non-gymnastics life. It if more like a fun biography!
