5-0 out of 5 stars Heart of a Champion
"Your every day life decisions can choose your fate." The book Heart of a Champion was written by: Carl Deuker. It is about a boy named Seth and his friend Jimmy. They both are trying to succeed and achieve there goal of playing professional baseball. I would recommend this book for kids who enjoy reading about baseball. What I liked about this book was they talked a lot about baseball. What I didn't like about the book was the things Jimmy was doing throughout the story. Another good book written by: Carl Deuker is Runner. This author is into baseball. Read this book and see if Jimmy and Seth can take there team to the championship game. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting book that's hard to put down
This book gives an accurate portrayal of what it was like back in the 1700's ~ and what it was like to move into the Indian's territory.

This book is about a teenager having problems, he drinks so that was that the start of it he is a linebacker for the football team at his high school. He ends up goin to rehaband learning from his mistakes. This book would probably be good for young teens goin through tough times.

3-0 out of 5 stars mixed feelings
I have mixed feelings about this book. As has been stated, the illustrations are really bright and colorful. And obviously, the women featured are amazing people.But...it does have a very simplistic (even for a kids book) heavy-handed way about it.And somehow it bugs me that the primary author is a man.No women authors available to do the job?The underlying message, though, that with determination you can do it, is a useful one for little girls.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read!
Girls Can! By Rick Kupchella is a celebration of girls and what they can accomplish when they believe in themselves. Kupchella writes his story with the cooperation of Sandra Day O'Connor (the first female Supreme Court associate justice), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Olympic gold medal winner) and Sally Ride (the first American woman astronaut in space).
1-0 out of 5 stars A little sexism for your sweetie
Despite getting higher grades in school and making up 52% of college graduates, girls apparently need a little extra patronizing and mixed messages about their ability to succeed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teacher's Grade: B
Mike Lupica has written an enjoyable, but highly predictable, story that will entertain 9-13 year old boys as much as High School Musical did.The story is a familiar one to anyone that has ever seen "The Bad News Bears"-genre of movie.Like all the movies in that genre, this plot centers around an underdog team being coached by a washed up adult. The ultimate ending won't come as any surprise to intelligent readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars author short on talent
Big mouth who writes so amateurishly and predictably that I might as well have stopped on page 4. Sorry Mike, you may have been able to fashion a minor columnist and broadcaster career out of being a flamboyantly idiotic fop, but when you try to write fiction, I'm afraid you come up short ... like you are.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your average sports story
On the surface, Keeper is a soccer story. Goalie extraordinaire El Gato sits in a small hotel room recounting not only how he's just won the World Cup, but also how he came to be the keeper he is today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Wrestling Book
My review on this book is a pretty good review. This book wouldn't exactly be my first choice, but it was a good book. If you were into wrestling I would highly recomend this book. It has a lot of wrestling moves and some terms listed. There are some funny parts as well. I would not recomend this book to children under 5th grade and would strongly suggest that you would at least be 10 or 11. This is a good book and I highly suggest it.

Maisie trys out for the wrestling team and makes it, but no matter how hard she tries she always gets into trouble by her coach. Being the only girl on the the team isn't easy either. No one wants to wrestle with her. But then she meets a friend on the wrestling team his name is George Bamberger, when the team would do warm-ups they were always partners. All through the summer Maisie has has a crush an a guy named Eric Delong, who also happened to be on the wrestling team. Meanwhile, the matches had started . When the other teams realized that their 105 pounder would be wrestling a girl they would forfiet. She went through matches undefeated by forfiets. which was great in a way but on the other hand she was very upset because no one supported her for wrestling because she was a girl, but then finally there was a team that their wrestler wasn't afraid to wrestle her. Even though she lost she was still very happy that she actually got to wrestle. I loved the book it was very awesome Spinelli is a very skilled writer and his book was great. 3-0 out of 5 stars A Lie and it's Ripple Effects
Oats has written a thought provoking young adult book that leads to the questions of personal responsibility, as well as self identity and acceptance. Darryl Flynn is a beautiful and charismatic young man. He's popular with his peers and a rising athelete in the swim team. One evening after school one of the teachers gives him a ride home, and Darryl's mind races at the idea of what might happen, of what this teacher might be, and what that might mean Darryl is. Told is quick chapters that burst with angst, Oats puts the story in high gear, barreling towards a dramatic event that send shockwaves through the school and Darryl's questioning mind. Oats provides no easy answers, and instead simply presents an honest portrait of a young man in crisis. I'll admit the language in the beginning threw me for a young adult book, however it's not done in an exploitive way, and does add to the realism of the characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Provocative
If I were stuck on a desert island and could only bring one author with me, I would definitely bring something by Joyce Carol Oates.I've probably read about 15 of her books over the last several decades and she never fails to deliver.
4-0 out of 5 stars Ms. Oates Conquers Yet Another Genre
I am always delighted to find that a writer whose works I admire branches out into yet another genre, in this instance children's and young adult literature. Reynolds Price, Ian McEwan and Toni Morrison-- just to name three fantastic writers-- have done it; and now Ms. Oates, who apparently is capable of anything when it comes to writing, has written SEXY, the story of Darren Flynn: "Soon as he turned sixteen, put on weight and began to get attention for his looks, things began to turn weird." And weird they do. He becomes visible to both women and men, including his high school English teacher Mr. Tracy. Darren is on the swimming team, is from rural New Hampshire, is very shy-- he has a girl friend who is sort of just his best friend. He is still chaste as the New Hampshire snow when it comes to girls. He faces all the dilemmas of a teenage boy and certainly doesn't always make the better decision. Without giving away the plot of this short work, I refer to his handling of "the thing" with Mr. Tracy as well as his participation in the bashing of a gay kid at the mall.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Premier Primer
This book is the best introduction to sailing I've ever seen. It is packed with information. Although beginners may spend hours on one page, the concepts are clearly presented and easy to follow. It is succinct. Only 64 pages! The drawings are superb. They are far superior to photos in clarity - Jan is such a fine artist that they are superior to most other drawings as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Lovely and Informative Book
This is a wonderful book for both children and adults who would like to learn the "nuts and bolts" of sailing. Adkins explains why sails work the way they do, with an understandable discussion of the Bernoulli effect, vectors, and the airfoil. He also explains various sailing techniques, such as docking, anchoring, tacking and gybing. Various knots are demonstrated as well. There are very attractive and useful illustrations throughout, which make the book very entertaining and accessable. My favorite part of the book is the 2 page spread showing various rigs. When I first started learning about boats, this helped me figure out the difference between a ketch and a yawl, and taught me the names for the various parts of a sail. This book contains lots of useful, digestible information at a reasonable price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Thoughtful, thorough, and visually beautiful, especially if you like old boats. Those who believe thay must wear lycra suit rather than old t shirt and shorts to go, say, biking or to go sailing might not find it glitzyenough.I have bought four of them. One to replace our tattered copy athome, one for public library and two for favorite young relatives ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Book report about The Good Luck Pony by Catherine Marie Fox
This book is about a girl who loved horses like I do. She always wanted to ride a real one and go very fast. Then one day she took some riding lessons. First, she learned how to guide the pony by using it's reins. Each week she took her pony around a circle with some other girls. One dayshe had to ride a different pony. She felt very unconformable on the newpony. Then all of a sudden the pony took off while the little girl wentwith him getting hit in the face with branches. Then the instructor ranwith her pony and grabbed the reins. The little girl's pony stopped.Then... Find out yourself when you order it.I loved this bookbecause it is about horses which I love and it has perfect words so I canread it easier. Also I love it because it has a charm which is a gold horsewith a gold chain. It is very pretty. I think it was a good story becauseit teaches you how to be brave. I think you would love it if you lovehorses.I am collecting all of Elizabeth Koda-Callan's bookswhich is also called Magic Charm books. She's my favorite author becauseshe writes all about little girls with different stories. ElizabethKoda-Callan now lives in New York city. You can read more about her in theback of the pages from "The Good Luck Pony."

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved Sanoe in Blue Crush, Loved this book.
Incredible, beautiful book! Sanoe proves that she's not just a great surfer and actress, she knows how to put a book together.I have been surfing for 3 years and I wish Sanoe had put his out when I started. I heard about the book on a KROQ radio ad in L.A. announcing her booksigning, but I couldn't make it, so I went to the store to check it out. I found 4 other girl's surfing guides! - they must have all just come out because I've never seen them. I sat down and plowed through all of them, and I'll keep this short and try and save people time and money if they are just going to buy one of these books, here is why Sanoe's is much better (but you'll see for yourself if you compare): 1. It's extremely well written, funny, and it's entertaining -- there's a continuous flow of interesting material, along with comics, photos, charts, and sweet graphics. My friends who don't surf checked it out and now they are starting to get the vibe of why the sport is so great. That's how this book is so great - it communicates the vibe of surfing. Bottom line: Sanoe's book is better written.2. Sanoe's "How To" part -about a third of the book - is very easy to follow, she takes the reader through it step by step, with tons of tight illustrations. I swear to God one of the other girl's guides has stick-figure drawings. Gimme a break2. Sanoe's book is in color - the other books are black and white or have just one color. Color crushes black and white. 3. Best I can tell, Sanoe is the only professional surfer of all the authors. As such, you bet your butt she knows what she is talking about when it comes to surfing.4. Sanoe has also been a model, so her fashion sections are great- she gives hints on all kinds of surfwear and beauty hints also. 5. The book is just really well-organized - going through the history of surfing, the herstory, the fashion, the dangers and how to proceed safely, sun and skin safety, all really interesting and helpful - I seriously could have avoided a few painful moments had I read through this before I learned. 6. Sanoe goes into the empowering aspects for girls and women - this is great material... i was thinking some of this when I was learning. You really do build your courage, discpline and confidence when you learn to surf. You basically have to as you get better. 7. Overall, Sanoe's tone is light and fun, and she has a huge glossary of all the surf terms... in case you want to get into the lingo of the sport. Seriously, a color book at his price...you absolutely will be thrilled with your value here. I bought 6 for gifts -- taking out a nice chunk of my xmas shopping. I would say that you definitely don't even need to be a future surfer to enjoy this book. The book is so full of interesting things about the ocean and it's so motivating in general. When are her new movies coming out? Cheers and aloha. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Ending to a Durned Good Read
This is one of the most real-world inspiring and beautifully understated pieces of fiction that I have read. The protagonist, Louden Swain, is a 17-and 18-year-old who is doing his very best to become the best (the most alive, capable) person he can figure out how to become. It's durned good to see such a life as Louden's promoted in a fine piece of writing instead of the maladjusts we often find in contemporary, "cool" literature. Although Vision Quest is listed as a young adult title, the writing transcends that genre. This is not so much a book for adolescent readers (although they'll likely enjoy it) as it is a fun read for adults who powerfully connect with good novels. The ending: it's downright perfect. The wrestling match between Louden and his opponent is not the point of the story. The journey of becoming is what matters here.
2-0 out of 5 stars If you loved the movie..don't buy this book!
My husband is perhaps the biggest fan of the movie Vision Quest. He bought this book hoping it would be as good or better and was HORRIBLY disappointed. It was shallow and Godless! You are left feeling disconnected from the main character. You feel like you need a bath after reading it. Seriously, this is not the book you had hoped for if you loved the movie. Save your money on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This remarkable book helped make me a writer.
This book not only helped me become a writer, it confirmed that there are folks out there working in each moment to be the best people they can be. I've carried the protagonist, Louden Swain, with me every day of my life since I read VISION QUEST in late 1979. And I'm glad for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!
This book is the best. It felt so down-to-earth. You feel like you know he williams sisters. I truly disagree with the person who talked about this book being about Jehovah's Witness. They don't encourage reades in any way to become a Jehovahs Witness. This is such a good book, I don't see how anyone could bad-mouth it. I had the good fortune to meet Venus, and I'm not lying i swear, and she is so nice and friendly. She gives off such a good vibe. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!! BUY IT PLEASE!!!!!!!

Hilary Beard is a Philadelphia journalist who you can trust implicitly, she has a great even voice. Her previous book was the life story of enterpreneur Lisa Price, the woman who came back from financial ruin to found CAROL'S DAUGHTER the great herbal essence success story.Lisa got to meet many celebrities, in fact she knew them before they got big, and her cosmetic prescriptions, learned from her mother and Trinidadian family, helped Erykah Badu and Jada Pinkett among others,
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for teens and fans of Venus and Serena!
After seeing Venus and Serena on the Oprah show, I decided to get this book and I'm glad I did.The book talks about many of their on-court experiences so if you're a fan of Venus and Serena and have followed their careers since the mid 90's, you'll find out fascinating tidbits about their reactions to incidents on the WTA Tour.I also bought a copy for a friend's 11 yr. old daughter so as you can see this book is a great conversation-starter for parents and their daughters.All-around, well done. ...
