5-0 out of 5 stars Become an Instant Torah Scholar with this Series!
You can be an instant Torah scholar with this fantastic commentary series! Each chapter is laid out as follows:1.a very brief summary of the parsha; 2. a more in depth overview of the parsha; 3. a synopsis of commentary from the world's most famous Torah scholars, both ancient and modern; 4. major themes of the parsha; 5. compelling questions at the end of the chapter regarding the parsha and commentary.5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible and thought-provoking
My wife and I recently decided we'd like to give our young children a more explicit introduction to moral values and figured that the torah would be an excellent vehicle (plus it would introduce the kids to torah). The problem was that neither my wife nore I is by any means a torah scholar - I'm a reform Jew and hadn't really done any bible study since hebrew school many, many years ago. I don't know enough to interpret the biblical texts myself and the full Talmud is far more than I was looking for. So, I went looking, in vain I feared, for a volume that would provide an accessible introduction to the bible. 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use Commentary
This is one of the best Torah Commentaries for use by people who do not have access to the original Hebrew. It includes a summary of each weekly reading and in depth examination of a few important themes usingtraditional and modern commentaries. I recommend this book for thebeginner and intermediate student to gain access to methods of commentaryand the advanced student who wants ideas and new ways of looking at thetext. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best Autobiography by Far! by Sammy K. 4th Grade
I am Jewish, and I learned a lot from this book. I learned about life in Warsaw, and about the time period around World War I. It shows how that time compares to this, and how much more we have now than back then. Lots of people take electric lights for granted. This book shows what it was like to live through freezing weather, hunger, and stress about war.
5-0 out of 5 stars The childhood of a master story- teller
Singer just has it. These vignettes of his childhood do not have the emotional power of his greatest stories but they are rich with life, insight and humor. And somehow he tells stories even when he is making simple descriptions of his early life. This work too tells the pain and poverty of his childhood and the difficulty of his parents' lives. It is too a tribute to a world - gone .
5-0 out of 5 stars I read this for a 6th grade book report and loved it!
This book is a very good read for anyone and everyone that likes to read about foreign culture-- or even if you don't!I usually detest biographies and book reports, but reading this book made it FUN! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Bible Commentary for adults and young people!
Rabbi Fields's Torah commentary is splendid. It is fun to read and offers insights that can be picked up at a glance in brief sittings... or can be mulled over and discussed and debated in depth with friends and family. Originally I got this text as a gift from my father to help with teachingmy Bible studies class to high school students. The students love the text-- and I also found it a joy to explore on my own.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Children's Siddur
The authors and illustrators have put together a visual feast for the eyes. The illustrations in this child's siddur are captivating. The easy to read hebrew, english, and transliteration is great for the beginning student of Jewish prayer. The book is arranged in a style that is easy to follow, with the front of the book for beginners and graduating to the advanced prayers in the latter part of the book. The modern and easy to understand translation of the traditional Jewish prayers, make explantion to young children very easy and enjoyable. I have really enjoyed using this book with my daughter. She looks forward to our prayer time using this book. There are even traditional songs in the back of the book to refresh your memory. All in all I really enjoy this siddur and highly recommend it to any Jewish parents looking for a good beginning to intermediate guide to teaching traditional prayers to their child. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book and Speaker
Mr. Oertelt came and spoke at my college in MN when I was a junior. Not only was he an amazing speaker, but he made the Holocaust a reality to everyone packed in that auditorium. He signed his book for everyone who wished to purchase it.I read it in one night unable to out it down!!!Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars stirring memoir
Oertelt tells the story of his life in Germany from his 1938 until his liberation from a concentration camp.It is a stirring memoir --heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.He uses the analogy of an18 link chain to demonstrate how each link was important to his survival. The details in the book are remarkable in their lucidity and specificity. He is never graphic in his descriptions, but he is brutally honest. In theend, it is an uplifing tale in the context of terrible sadness. ... Read more

Co-editors Fred Skolnik and Shumel Himelstein work with editor Geoffrey Wigoder in assembling essays and articles invaluable to charting the history and spirituality of Judaism in their basic Student's Encyclopedia Of Judaism. Here's a comprehensive, A to Z encyclopedic reference to the key spiritual leaders, concepts, and Biblical references of Judaism, blending in biblical sidebars of reference details as well as black and white photos throughout. 5-0 out of 5 stars Holocaust through the Eyes of a Child
Annie deLeuuw is growing up in Nazi- Europs during the Holocaust.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Upstairs Room
Reading this as a seventh grade student I personaly thought it was a very well written book. It was a breath-taking, sad and happy book. There are some bad words but you have to remember this book is about the Hollocaust. It starts out when two girls get seperated from their father and older sister to go hide at someone's house that they didn't know. Now I don't want to tell you the whole book so you could either buy or borrow it from the library. If you're looking for a good book choose The Upstairs Room, and that's from a seventh grader.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Review
I thought that The Upstairs Room was an overall pretty good book. I liked the fact that I had never read a book quite like it before, or heard a story similar to its style of text. The detail of the characters and situations was good, not excessive, and the author didn?t just skim over what happened. What I really liked in the story was all the interesting conversation between the characters that lasted all throughout the course of the story. The characters were good, well defined, interesting, and realistic, especially Opoe, with her stubborn attitude towards tradition. The author set the cold, familiar feeling among the house by describing each room. The plot was interesting, even though throughout the middle when Annie and Sini were in the upstairs room all day long got kinda boring. I especially liked the end when they all ran outside, even Opoe who protested quite a bit, and watched the Canadians wave their flags as they declared peace in Holland. All in all, I would recommend this book any day to anyone who wants to read to read about a different part of the world.
