4-0 out of 5 stars Theologically accurate; Practically insightful; Fantastic for teaching; but Excessive in application
The best resource I've found for spiritual gift study so far.
5-0 out of 5 stars My choice for spiritual gifts work with churches
As a church consultant, I am often asked to recommend spiritual gift surveys and resources for churches. In fact, we routinely ask staff members to fill out gift surveys as part of the consulting process. This book--and the corresponding survey available separately--are the tools I have chosen to use in my work.
2-0 out of 5 stars Built on a flawed foundation
I applaud the Fortunes for doing a great job of encouraging people to discover and develop their spiritual gifts. Many of their tidbits and applications are very helpful and motivating. However, I have a problem with some of their foundational assumptions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a non-insulting Christian 'dating' book for all!
I've read my share of 'dating' books, most of the time after a relationship has ended in flames (this time was no exception). I've also read a number of 'Christian' advice books about dating, most of which range from the banal (sex is for marriage) to the ridiculous (don't show physical affection ever!), without preaching. I picked this book up in a spate of post-relationship depression and quickly it helped me to identify many of my frequent mistakes. It mentions God, but it doesn't limit the expression 'don't be unevenly yoked' to'don't date non-Christians'; it includes things along the lines of 'don't be a Mother Theresa in your relationship'. It also identifies one of the mistakes of relationships as being, if you can believe it, 'praying together'--correctly identifying the stupid over-spiritualization of honest to goodness human infatuation that I've seen too often in relationships. (And have been guilty of.)5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, time-tested dating advice...
The Bible doesn't specifically say much about how to "date" in the modern senseRead more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I thought it would be more of an autobiography or memoir, but it was divided into short chapters that would discuss some feature of her struggle with her eating disorder, and then connect them to a bible verse and discuss her relationship with God. If you're looking for a spiritual memoir, then go for this book. Otherwise, don't go near it. It's choppy and in my opinion, not well written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have read Christie's previous book and thought it was excellent.Along comes a second book and it is written at a more teen oriented audience which I believe is a crucial component in looking at the beginnings of eating disorder.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT READ THIS FALSE NEW AGE BOOK, CHRISTIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Matthew 7:15 says, "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves."Such is author Neale D. Walsch in "Conversations with God" and "Conversations with God for teens."The one and only Jehovah-God, Father of Jesus the Christ, has told us everything we need to know in His Holy, Infallible, Inerrant and Inspiring Word, the Bible.First of all, Walsch says there is no such thing as sin ("There is no such thing as right or wrong and that is what I have been trying to tell everyone", he writes).WRONG PER GOD!!!(John 3:16)Next, he says homosexuality is a "genetic trait" and should be "celebrated."WRONG PER GOD!!!!(Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13)These two items alone should demonstrate to any reasonable person that Walsch IS NOT RELIGIOUS AND IS NOT CHRISTIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars How life could be
Firstly, this is not a religious book; it's a spiritual self-help book in the form of real or imagined conversations with God (you pick). It's important to remember that this is how the author perceives things and we can choose to agree or disagree, it's all about free will. Our views don't have to match the author's, if that was the case we'd still be living in the dark ages and never learn anything new. Secondly, I'd like to ask the parents who refuse to let their teens read this book 'cause of the "immoral" chapter on sex, don't you think your sons and daughters are smart enough to think for themselves and make up their own minds?
2-0 out of 5 stars Consider this!!
To anyone who has or is planning on reading this book, consider this. This book has a lot of words which feel good and can make anyone's guilty conscience ease in thinking that "your own will is god's own will." (quoted from Walsh's books) If you will it, then God wills it because he loves you and wants you to live in freedom, right? Will is a precursor to action. If there is no such this an a 'right' or 'wrong' will, then in essence there is really no such thing as a 'right' or 'wrong' action. If someone else's actions hurt you, you feel that action is wrong. But the person who hurt you certainly had his feelings for acting that way, right? It was his will, therefore he was justified and right and god's right there to back him up. The victim is suffering. Where is his god when he needs him? Was the victim correct in believing the action wrong? Was the perpetrator correct in believing his action was right? In this book, god says that WE have the authority to decide what is right or wrong. The action is both right and wrong, right? Wrong.

2-0 out of 5 stars Try something else
I am a young Wiccan, and I am always looking for books oriented towards teens and solitaty Wiccans. Last Christmas I asked my mother for this book thinking that it was the answer to my search for an author who wanted to help teen Wiccans. I do not like to put anyone down, but I must say that this book is disappointing. Silver Ravenwolf seems to be one of those people who think they understand, but really don't. For those just beginning to learn about Wicca it provides useful info. on Sabbats and basic Wiccan beliefs, but the book is more of a lecture than anything else. While Silver Ravenwolf has obviously good intentions, the book's primary focus is to hassle tennagers about not doing drugs and drinking and other risk behaviors. I completely support these ideas, but it has little to do with the subject matter. I read this book from cover to cover and it took me a long time for it to sink in so that I could make judgements on it. Once it did sink in though, I felt like a small child who was manipulated into forgetting about what they really wanted to do and being sent away with a pat on the head and a toy to occupy them. Another problem I have with Silver Ravenwolf is that she hands you a long list of her own personal spells(and her children's) rather than encouraging you to write your own. She seems more intent on bringing you into her specific sect of the Craft than allowing you to find your own individual path, and discovering your own beliefs is vitally important. Some practiced Wiccans would refer to this as "fluff" Wicca. The thing with Silver Ravenwolf is that you either really like her or really don't. I am among the many who don't. You should make your own judgements, but if you are seriously interested in Wicca, Paganism, and/or other Earth religions I suggest you read as many books as you can by Scott Cunningham and Raymond Buckland. Anyone will tell you that these two authors are the absolute best on the subject.
2-0 out of 5 stars Skip This One
Usually I love books by Silver RavenWolf, but I have mixed feelings about this one. Sure, Silver has some good information in here, but some of it is quite laughable with her overexaggerated facts and ridiculous spell names.
2-0 out of 5 stars What the Hell?
This book should not be given to any teenager. She does have some good info, and a good writing style for teens, but she includes nothing about how and why the ethics work.... Where natural law comes in... And on top of that! She includs spells for manipulation. "The Call Me Spell".... Yes some of it is good. I think this book should be used as a guide for teens being asked "What is wrong with this and how could we fix it?" ... Read more

This book did absolutly nothing for me. Just a boring thing to write in, which I haven't.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Chicken Soup Warmed my Soul
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul: Journal, was one of the most moving books I have read.It is directed towards adolescents, and deals with issues every adolescent girl faces. It's a blend of stories, quotes, poems, and spaces to write your thoughts. This book has many different sections such as: family, learning lessons, love and kindness, and tough stuff. My favorite section, however, is "loving yourself".This book gave me a chance to deal with issues and see that I am not the only girl whom faces such issues.Chicken Soup is a book that I am able to pick up and at any time if I need some inspiration, help, or reassurance.Other issues helpful to me were on drinking, self-esteem, eating disorders, and how to deal with my past.Another good part about this book is that a lot of it is compiled with texts written by teenage authors. There are spaces for friends to write about you, and spaces for you to express how you feel on certain issues.Chicken Soup allowed me to realize I was not the only girl who had experienced some of the feelings I did. After reading this book I knew I wasn't alone!I do highly recommend this book to any teenage girl.Adolescence is a hard time to get through, and many girls need inspiration. You do not have to read the book cover to cover; you can pick it up any time and read whatever section you desire.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended for Christian Teens
This is a book written to Christian girls...First of all the cover of the books are inappropriate...It shows the girl pushing a girl out of a seat with the ejector button...there are also pictures within the book of "girl angels" and "girl devils"...On pages 6-7 there is a picture of a Mean O Meter...that is having a mean looking girl placing her hands on a machine that looks like you would drop change into...and the front of the machine says "TEST YOURSELF!"...the options that the meter might show you as are angel, goody 2-shoes, sweet, nice, cool, chatty, vain, jealous, nasty, or she-devil...Personally...I don't think Christian girls should call themselves she-devils or use a Mean O Meter to tell what kind of a person they are...there are various tests in these books to measure how much of a mean girl problem you have or what kind of a mean girl you might be...She uses "psychological thinking", New Age type terms...Purpose Driven type terms...and mixes them with Scripture to present truth...She also promotes self doing things instead of dependence on the Lord to help you overcome in a situation...and she contradicts herself chapter to chapter with statements of hypocrisy to her own statements...On page 11 she says, "Before you dive into the truth about mean, take some time to do a spiritual inventory of yourself. It will do you good to think about what your soul is crying out for and what you hope to find within yourself as you take this journey. So open up your heart and look into the inner workings of your soul."...this reminds me of New Age terminology...On page 73 she says, "Let Go.If someone who you think is yours has turned against you or been taken from you, rethink your position.Spend some time in prayer allowing God to take back what is really his.If you want to, close your eyes, imagine the person, and imagine walking up to God and leading this person into his arms. Then imagine turning and walking away, trusting God to do what he wants with the person."...This reminds me again of New Age...UNBIBLICAL...Also in the "psychological counseling" realm...RED FLAG WARNING TO ME...On page 76 it gets worse...she says, "Avoid the cares and anxieties of this world, because they are just momentary distractions from your real purpose. To allow them to consume you is to take your focus off your goal, the prize for which you were made.Beware of returning what you renounced. Before you took on the Spirit of the Lord, you managed your world with all of your energy, and now you have to resist the urges to go back into that same state of mind"....at the end of the paragraph she does say, "Trust the divine power of God, and allow him to lift your burden."...We are to cast our burdens on Jesus...not to avoid the cares and anxieties of this world...our real purpose is to glorify God...and we are not made for the prize...this all seems to be written from the view of self...On the next page 77...she writes..."2.Make a list of the things you will let go of today.Focus on your purpose and your holiness, and let the other things fall through the cracks, trusting him to pick them up.After you write the list, take it to a fireplace or some other safe place for burning and burn it, representing to yourself and to God how you will let go of controlling the things you can't control, the things that only make you crazy."...again...UNBIBLICAL...I have never read where we are to make a list of what we will let go of in Scripture...or then seen Scripture instruct us to burn it...In the book she recommends many times that you ignore the Mean Girls...and she contradicts that advice on page 80 when she says..."If you have a girl who is mean to you, then the holy thing to do is to care for her."...later in the same paragraph she says, "Confidence means having the strength to laugh in the face of insults and to know that in the grand scheme of things, they mean nothing."...Does Christ instruct us to laugh at people when we are insulted? Does that show confidence and strength? Here is a big whopper on page 81 in the "Dive" Section...she says..."1.Think about these words spoken by Jesus Christ: "Love your enemies" (Matthew 5:44).Do you have the strength of spirit to do that? If not you , then who does? He was talking to all of us, not just the priests and the nuns.Everyone who truly loves, loves those who hate them, for it's not real love to love only those who love you back."...I underlined the part about the priests and the nuns because they are pushing for Catholicism and Ecumenism if she is following that the Scriptures were written for the priests and the nuns....I could go on and on...I have practically most of the pages in this book marked out with unscriptural advice and contradicting statements...I believe from most of the statements throughout the book she has been influenced under the teaching of purpose driven, ecumenism, and emerging church which introduces New Age teaching...I would never recommend that a Christian read this for Biblical advice...or to use in addition to Biblical advice. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Only for Those With Prior Knowledge
As someone who is not Christian and only knows the basics of the New Testement (and doesn't know the difference between any of the gospels), I came into Marked with a lot of expectations. Having read about it in Newsweek, I expected the story of an outsider and to learn about a religion I don't know about. The book is without a doubt meant for Christians. No background is given on the characters, we're supposed to know that Jesus is who he is, that Simon is Simon, and the land is corrupt. I was left confused and slightly frustrated at several moments. Also, a lot of the drama just wasn't there for me. Since this is an adaptation, I guess the reader is supposed to be waiting for certain moments. It just didn't work for me.
3-0 out of 5 stars Marked
As an author who has tackled Gospel translation into the graphic novel format, I commend Steve Ross on a heart-felt effort to bring the book of Mark to life with a contempory feel. It's not an easy task by any means. But Marked is slightly problematic in a couple areas. One, if it was designed to be used as an outreach to the unchurched, I felt like the narrative was not very easy to follow, (if you were not "very" familiar with the work it was based upon, I.E. the Gospel of Mark, and in some places even if you were)! It was the same kind of feeling I had when I first saw the movie, 2001.Secondly, the artwork I would say drifts more toward abstraction in many parts of the story, more than solid storytelling...which is fine and works wonderfully in soome parts of the book, but leaves the reader wondering too much in others, (what the heck just happened there?).
5-0 out of 5 stars A FRESH VISION OF THE GOSPEL OF MARK: RECOMMENDED
With my newly revived interest in old and new, well-done comic books-slash-graphic novels (think ASTONISHING X-MEN, think SANDMAN, think WATCHMEN, think SUPREME POWERS),I had to rush here to amazon.com for a copy of MARKED. I first saw it featured at novelist Chris Well's nifty blog. This re-imagination of the gospel of Mark sounded like something I should "taste and see."

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Bible to give as a gift for a young beliver
I thought the Bible was great and the person i gave it to really loved it also. The only reason why I gave 4 stars is on asthetics... I don't like the glosy cover, but based on content, it's a 5 star Bible for young students...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great guy's Bible
My son is 14 and he enjoys this Bible very much. The suggestions on how to live life as a young Christain male are wonderful and he actually reads them. For example, he and his friends were hovered around his Bible after youth group to review the "100 things to do on a date". Now, they're not dating. But when they do, they've got 100 clean and safe ideas to start with! Also, the small side lessons are good because they're short and to the point. It's a great boy's Bible. His only complaint is he wishes the print was a little bigger.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!
Wow! This is a fabulous bible! I highly recommend it for young men. We just bought this for our oldest son, who is 12 going on 30!..=) He reads it everyday, and I don't have to ask him to! He told me the other day that it is the first bible he has had that is fun to read, and that makes sense to him- he said it's like they took all his questions and tailored his bible specifically for him! Definately well worth the money- this is a great version! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing stories
Well, I don't know what the other reviewer was reading, but this was the best collection of stories in a Chicken Soup book yet. All of these stories are written by teens, and they talk about some of the grittiest stuff I've ever read. I mean, imagine being kidnapped by your own mother, or helping your friend through a suicidal breakdown. It doesn't get any more real than that. It's just great to know that there are other teens experiencing the same kinds of craziness I see every day. I take this book with me everywhere. I like the quizzes and other stuff too when I need a break from reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad Soup
Like I've said I really like Chicken Soup Books.I love the storys. So when this book came out I could'nt wait to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh & Fantastic!
I have a 16 year old cousin who is a Christian. When she and I used to go to church together, I noticed that she is much more excited about learning about God when it is fun.She loves Contemporary Christian Music and I think this Complete New Testament is awesome.I read through to make sure that it was acceptable and that it didnt discuss more worldly issues than godly issues.I was greatly impressed.I also bought becoming and devos, though I havent checked them out yet.So far, I am thrilled that there are books like this that can get teen's attention and still emphasise the Word of God.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very up to date Bible with timeless truths
I really liked this New Testament for the younger generation. It is really good to give to people who don't have a big attention span because it is very colorful and engaging. The translation was very good too.The only thing that I would change is the way some of the girls dressed in there. It seemed a little questionable.Overall, this was a great New Testament to reach the younger generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars God In The Lives of Teens Today
Being a teenager myself, I feel that the Revolve bible is a great way for teen girls to get into the word and apply it to their lives. By designing this bible in a magazine-like form, many girls who wouldn't have read a bible outside of church or Sunday school are attracted to it and start using God's word every day in their lives. I realize that much criticism goes into these books, but to me, I think that what they've did is really giving God something to be glad about. It's leading a whole new generation to him through a way that we can understand by helping us live a life for him and not satisfying our worldly desires and selfish ways. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars May be for Young Adults, but excellent for everyone
I didn't realize this book was categorized as "Young Adult" since I found it in the new books section of my library.Braude has done a stellar job of representing multiple aspects of the complex issue of womenand american religion. While she takes a chronological approach to thesubject, Braude still manages to represent all religions, includingalternative and native american religions on which much "primaryscholarship" does not exist (and therefore they usually get excludedin overview books like this one).I gained a real understanding of howvarious movements surrounding issues of immigration and within the variousProtestant sects emerged in the larger context of American History.Thisbook is one of a lengthy series on Religion in America, and I plan onseeking out the others to see if the quality is as good. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Trendy, Fashionable, and Appropriate
Finally, a high end magazine I don't have to preview (and rip out advertisements) before my teenage daughter reads it.Yes, she's trendy, likes boys and wants to keep her reputation and personal value intact.Teen Virtue provides an outlet for all of these things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Fun, and Relevant
TeenVirtue 2 is the answer to what teenage girls are looking for.It is so great to find a fun, stylish book that addresses real issues teens are facing without all the fluff!

1-0 out of 5 stars TeenVirtue--Definitely read this so you know what you are purchasing
From the title and cover of this book, you would think you were buying a book to help guide teen girls through their relationships. You would not know that the focus of this book is building and maintaining a relationship with God and how this relationship plays into and effects all of the other relationships that exist.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bordering on Fundamentalism
The purpose of this book is to act as a FAQ concerning religion and how it fits into their life. According to the authors, they do this by bringing to light evidence that proves that the way of Christianity is the true path for a happy life, however the supposed evidence is merely Bible passages. The rest is the author preaching almost archaicly, about the danger of the devil's temptation and the glory of God. It doesn't have the free-thinking and open feel that is necessary for a book targeted towards teenagers. The rest of the language feels dated, as is expected for a book written in 1992, however I doubt it would have impacted teens then either. It isn't funny, it isn't "real", nor will it satiate curious minds about what Christianity really is about. Really, for a book targeted at an audience with questions regarding their faith, it is remarkable that it is so reliant on the reader blindly believing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Josh McDowell has done it again!
Once again, Josh McDowell has produced a phenomenal work that serves to help Christian teens live godly lives in an ungodly world. This time, Josh tackles various wicked worldviews (any worldview that is not Christian is wicked) and modern philosophies such as moral relativism. It even tackles certain evils within Christianity such as the ungodly notion that one must check one's brains at the door when one enters the Church (meaning when one becomes a Christian).
5-0 out of 5 stars Teenage tested and approved
This book caught my eye and I got a copy for my boys.My thirteen-year-old son has already worked throught the whole thing and my fifteen-year-old is working on it now, both completely on their own initiative. The content addresses some of the questions/arguments Christians may have or encounter from friends who are not like-minded in faith. Highly recommended as a devotional guide that will hit the spot with teenage boys. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars God help us!
From the positive review here of this garbage book!
1-0 out of 5 stars Repulsive and horrifying.
This book is nothing more than Christian fundamentalist evangelism that is couched in being "cool" and "relateable" to teenagers, and the sentiments expressed therein are hateful and potentially severely damaging to the self-esteem and psyche of any young girl who is exposed to it.Instead of employing any kind of rationality, Ms. DiMarco calls sexually active girls "prostitutes" and states that since men can not help themselves when they are sexually aroused, God will punish the girl, and the girl only, for any sexual activity that may result.Girls are also warned that no guy is interested in what she has to say, they just pretend so to get them in the sack.It is repulsive. There are many more sexuality books written from a Christian perspective to choose from, most that have a far more caring, fair and meaningful message to send. Please do not buy this book for your teenage girl.

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of contradictions!
So first this book tells girls to stay chaste until they're married, and then it gives you "sexy" make-out and bj tips!?! I don't get it, not suitable for under 18. ... Read more

This book is very handy.Lookadoo and Dimarco talk about breaking up:how it hurts, what to do, what not to do, common dumb things that people do in relationships. There is a special letter to the Heartbreaker and another to the Heartbroken.Look
