5-0 out of 5 stars another great book from Lois Duncan!
This book was really intriguing and kept you wanting more. Some people don't like the fact that this book was slow, but I liked that it gradually went along without too many clues about the ending. It moved along at a comfortable pace and had a lot of character development which has always been important to me.I also liked that it didn't really have ONE climax, but many of them, all leading up to the final part of the book where everything came to a heart stopping ending.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book! i no a lot of younger teenagers feel that its very slow and confusing.. and the truth is it is! There are questions that u ask at the end of the book but if ut hink about it.. dont all books leave u that way? This is a great book...its based on real life problems where someone goes missing and u have questions espeically if at the end they dont ever show up... This book is about two boys who go missin...and dont turn up....its a slow book but its just like real life....I strongly recomend this book to anyone!

1-0 out of 5 stars Jack McNamara
I read other Lois Duncan books, but this one is the worst. It is about two boys who supposedly go "hiking in the woods" but never come back. This book makes know sense and it is very confusing. First of all, the reason why they go "into the woods" is because they are both involved in a drug smuggling scam and it is destroying their lives, and one of them pushes the other down. One problem, Joan (one of the boys' sister) talks to a girl named Peggy. To Joan, Peggy seems awfully familiar to her. Then, when she gets home she says "Now Joan knew where she had seen Peggy before, she was staring at her in the mirror" referring to herself! What is that supposed to mean?! Also, the ending made no sense, just read it for yourself! I don't recommend this book! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "That's Not What I'm Looking For..."
"The Harvest" is the novelisation of the first two pilot episodes of Joss Whedon's incredibly popular television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Richie Tankersley Cusick does an adequate job of transcribing the events of "Welcome to the Hellmouth" and "The Harvest" into book form, representing the characters truthfully, and making the action and suspense - well, suspenseful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are you in the House Alone?
Have you ever been in the house alone? Do you get scared when you hear weird noises? Does the dark scare you? If so, then Are you in the House Alone is just the book for you! This book is 2 thumbs up. This book is about a girl named Gail, who is 16 years old. Gail's life is going good so far, she's doing good in school and has a boyfriend. But from then on things just keep on getting weirder and weirder.
4-0 out of 5 stars Are You in the House Alone
In the first few chapters, the book introduces the characters and their relationships. For example, Gail and Steve are not only classmates, but also lovers. So are Gail's friend Alison and one boy called Phil. Gail and Steve usually date together. On the other hand, Gail's parents do not like the fact that they have become lovers because of Steve's faith.
4-0 out of 5 stars Like a little suspense? This one's for you...
I read this book for a literature class and at first I was not impressed with the slow start. The details seemed irrelavent at first. However, as the book progressed it panned out and really came together as a puzzle. It was suspenseful and once the stalker is revealed it really all connects. It was a good read, especially toward the end of the book. I couldn't set it down once I really got into it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins has few illusions about the world--at leastnot about the world of a young black veteran in the late 1940s in Southern California. His stint in the Army didn't do anything to dissuade him from his belief that justice doesn't come cheap, especially for men like him. "I thought there might be some justice for a black man if he had money to grease it," Easy says. Fired from his job on the line at an aircraft plant, he's in danger of losing his home, symbol of his tenuous hold onmiddle class status. That's a good enough reason to accept a white man's offerto pay him for finding a beautiful, mysterious Frenchwoman named Daphne Monet, last seen in the company of a well-known gangster. Easy's search takes the reader to an L.A. few writers have shown us before--the mean streets of South Central, the after-hours joints in dirty basement clubs, the cheap hotels and furnished rooms, the places people go when they don't want to be found. Evocative of a past time, and told in a style that's reminiscent of Hammet and Chandler, yet uniquely his own, Mosley's depiction of an inherently decent man in a violent world of intrigue and corruption rang up big sales when it was published in 1990 (although the movie version, with Denzel Washington as Easy, never found the audience it deserved). The minor characters are deftly and brilliantly developed, especially Mouse, who saves Easy's life even as he draws him deeper into the mystery of Daphne Monet. Like many of Mosley's characters, Mouse makes a return appearance in the succeeding Easy Rawlins mysteries, such as Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Distinctive Character
I read Devil in a Blue Dress in one sitting. Obviously, writer Jonathan Kellerman did too, because he later wrote, "I read Devil in a Blue Dress in one sitting and didn't want it to end. An astonishing first novel." Fortunately for Mosley fans, there are more Easy Rawlins mysteries. Devil in a Blue Dress remains my favorite. It's set in 1948 in Los Angeles. Easy Rawlins is a war veteran just fired from his job at a defense plant. (This is the role Denzel Washington plays in the movie.) Devil is much more than a hard-boiled mystery. The book left me wanting to read more about Easy Rawlins whereas many of the Hammett/Chandler/Cain novels are so formulaic that I have trouble remembering which ones I've read. Not a problem with Devil in a Blue Dress.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb...absolutely superb
Devil In A Blue Dress is a beautiful book, with its Southern dialect and the change of the pace of Los Angeles's tough streets. Devil In A Blue Dress tells the story of Ekeziel 'Easy' Rawlins and his quest to pay his mortrage after he is fired from his job at a defense plant. The books explores the racial and gender segregation in post war America. It invites you, the reader, into a web of desire and intrigue.

3-0 out of 5 stars The movie version of this hard-boiled mystery is actually better
This is the story of how Easy Rawlins, an unemployed black veteran, becomes a Los Angeles P.I. in 1948."I'd ask the bartender his name and talk about anything, but, really, behind my friendly talk, I was working to find something.Nobody knew what I was up to and that made me sort of invisible; people thought they saw me but what they really saw was an illusion of me, something that wasn't real." Out of work, a friend recommends Easy to a white man who's looking to hire someone for a very special job--find a white girl who frequents the seedy bars and jazz clubs of black L.A.At first apprehensive, Easy takes the job and begins to learn, through trial and error, the detective trade. He gets good at it, but he's also in over his head when he encounters two people who are eventually murdered. His notoriously savage friend, Mouse, comes to his aid, and together they must discover the connection between a politician, rich man, pimp, and a gorgeous blond in a blue dress.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
I liked this book. It is one of the better books in the series. I like Killian, he is a great character as is Ciaran who has alot of class. I liked the way Bree and Robbie's relationship is growing as is Morgan and Hunter's. I didn't like the way Morgan reacted to finding out Ciaran was her father - "omg I'm the heir to the darkness! I'm somehow evil just because my Dad is!" and then she goes and breaks up with Hunter completely unnecessarily, destroying a wonderful relationship just because she finds out she's related to a murderer. However, apart from the unfortunate ending, I thought that this was a very good book and I'd still give it 4 out of 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweep #7 - The Calling
Like the rest of the books in this series, "The Calling" was very compelling. If you know the series well enough, it's kind of predictable, but that doesn't make it any less suspenseful. The ending is REALLY sad and shocking.I liked the fact that "The Calling" took place in New York City, as opposed to Widow's Vale - it made for a nice change of scenery and a good atmosphere to introduce new characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars This was actually pretty funny
Contrary from what I have seen in other reviews, this book is decent. I found it not laugh-out-loud, rolling-on-the-floor funny, but still pretty funny. I too am in Spanish 3 and am in High School, yet I didn't find this book too difficult to read; I managed to enjoy the book. It seems to me that the reviewer who wasn't able to understand a "comic mystery for intermediate students" might not in fact be an intermediate student.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not wild about it, but it is a decent book
I am a high school student and I read La Casa Embrujada as an extra credit assignment. The humor may be a little dry, but all around this is a nice book for high school students to read.In my spanish 3 class we are assigned to read Marianela, and let me tell you this book is sooooo much better (and easier to understand) than Marianela.I have read the preceeding book to La Casa Embrujada, entitled El Secuestrador.I enjoyed reading that book as well.I would reccomend this book to all spanish students that enjoy reading spanish literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool spanish book
La casa embrujada is the coolest and best spanish book I ever read. It rules!!! The characters are funny and the book is hilarious. The book is very comical, awesome, and educational.I would recommend it to any spanish-book reader.Panzon and Pepino are classic. You would be a fool not to read this neat book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gallows Hill
Sarah Zoltanne is faced with some problems when she moves to Pine Crest.First she has no friends and second she can look in a crystal paperweight and see events in the future and is then labeled as a witch.Sarah was standing at her locker and Eric Garrett, the president of almost everything in the high school, went up to her and asked her if she wanted to be the fortuneteller in the Halloween carnival. She was almost ready to say yes until Eric told her that Kyra was going to be feeding her information about the people coming in.After the carnival Eric told Sarah that she was a big hit and asked her if she wanted to open a fortune telling business. For the business Kyra was not going to be feeding her information through a head set, instead she got pre-written papers to look off of.When people came in and got their fortunes told she told them the things on the paper from Kyra, that she had no way of knowing. When Misty Lamb went in she asked if her mother was going to leave her father, and when Sarah looked into the paperweight she saw her mother fall and then it happened and everyone assumed that Sarah made it happen so she was written off as a witch.A few weeks later she found a dead crow in her locker, and then she was invited to a party at Eric's house, but when she got in car to go to Eric's house they took her up to Garrett Hill.Once they were there she was tied up by some football players and was placed in a noose. Then, Charlie came and he hypnotized everyone to think that were from the Salem Witch Trials. When people started beating him up Ted came and broke everything up.After the event that night Sarah's mother decided to move back to Ventura.I really liked this book because it was a little creepy, but the people were really mean.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.

I thought this book was a very interesting book that kept you thinking the whole way through. On the very first chapter it grabed me and I could not put the book down. Then as the story goes on, the book twists and turns into a very compelling story. I rate this book four stars because I thought it was a good book, but, there were some things that I didn't like. The thing I mostly liked about this book is how detailed Lois Duncan made it and how you couldn't put it down. The only thing I did not really like about the book was that then ending, I thought, was not very good and it left me hanging. I guess Lois Duncan wanted to leave the rest to the imagination. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable
The reading level for this book is quite low.I was disappointed that it was written at such a remedial level.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro
I'm a big fan of the show and most people that read this book probably are as well. It's not a series like Lord of the Rings but it's not a bad book either. It's not real long, you can read it over a weekend and get a little bit of an Alias fix quickly. It's geared toward young adults so if that's not you don't expect something else. It's a good book if you want a good story, geared toward young adults, that's all about Alias and discovering life before the tv series.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not much substance...
I love the show Alias and had hoped the books would fill in some holes about Sydney's past, her recruitment, etc.The books do provide some details but the books stay pretty general. It's obvious they cannot provide too much detail or it might conflict with the writing for the show (which frequently draws from the past to explain the present)The books focus on getting to know Sloane, her strained relationship with her dad, etc.The writing is pretty bland--this is one situation where the show is BETTER than the book.My final irritation with the books (and I've read several) is that they tend make Sydney look dumb and naive. She will "save the day" and then we the reader see the final "secret email" proving she helped the bad guy, etc.She comes off looking really dumb.Read the books if you must but get them from the library.... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must read!!!! :)
This is definitely the best book in the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys series... :) Don't listen to anybody if they say it stunk, becuz it is really good! It has alot of Nancy/Frank stuff, and has TONS of action... I don't think you could get any more action in a book. I have read this book 4 times, and I still don't get tired of reading it! :) The thing that makes it really good is the close calls... and this book has ALOT of them! If you like a very suspenseful book, this is the one for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shock Waves
It was an interesting mystery filled with excitement, romance and a good mystery. I would recomend this book to anybody who likes mysterys, treasure hunts, islands of mysterys and romance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Joe's keys
I think the best part was when Iola's keys were stolen, and how Joe reacted. It was great because he'll never forget her, no matter how many girlfriends he has. I loved this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Blue Door....A Brilliant Ending to a Great Trilogy
If the first two entries in this trilogy are any indication, one expects a brilliant third entry. If you expected brilliancy, then you will be pleasantly surprised. 3-0 out of 5 stars Don't let this series put you off Rinaldi
Being a huge fan of Ann Rinaldi I can only say that this series was defnitely not her best work. If this is the first time you have read her please try something else, like A Break with Charity or Coffin Quilt both excellent books. This book on its own is contrived and sad and unless you have read the other two books I would not recommend it. Nor would I really recommend the series to anyone but a die hard Rinaldi fan.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst book I have ever read in my entire life
I hated this book.It had no plot, what passed for a plot was totally unbelievable. There was no way that the girl would be in that kind of situation. It made no sense at all and was very badly written. If you want to read a book, read something by a good author, like Chrichton.I wouldn't even give this book a star if I didn't have to. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Crazy
Because I am extremely interested in forensics, I plucked this book off the shelf (secretly i hoped the book was about killing Britney Spears. Its not!) Basically the book is about the grotesque (somewhat explicitly described in the novel) murders of all the people who were close to Britney. The reader is never sure who the killer is, although they may have their suspictions. The alternating narrations of the main characters (including that of the killer) enhance the mystery and suspense. The book did have a handful of grammatical errors, otherwise, it was very unique and a good read.If you're prone to nightmares, read only during the day and in the presence of a very menacing and protective dog.

4-0 out of 5 stars Killing Britney
I got this book b/c the title seemed interesting and the book is. Throughout the book I thought it was one person and the ending was very unexpecting to me.. I highly recommend this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, I didn't want it to end!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cold in Summer - an awesome read!
Tracy Barrett has created a wonderful, enthralling read for young adults and adults!I always try to pre-read fiction before giving it to my daughter, and found this book incredibly intriguing.Once I started it, I couldn't stop!I read into the night, woke early to read before breakfast, had it in the car in case I got stuck in traffic, and hid it on my desk under my work to finish it.Truly a "can't put it down" book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Cold in Summer by Tracy Barrett
In this book Tracy Barret has excellent writing that took me into a whole other world where I could see the characters and feel the surroundings.I deffinetly would recommend this book.At first one would think "Oh I already know this. Why read the rest?"I promise it gets good.It tells you May is a ghost but the suspense is thrilling and really rewarding at the end.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling

5-0 out of 5 stars Just plain WOW
I picked this and some other young adult books up at my library for the class I am taking...to be a young adult librarian. I just kept reading and reading...until the book was over. It was probably the best YA book I have read in the last 5 years. AMAZING. All of Hautman's novels are great, but this one just grabs you and will not let go.

5-0 out of 5 stars umm yeah...wow
I First read MR WAS in while I was in high school. I was surprised by the story line taking twist and turns in directions you couldn't even imagine. Unlike most stories with a theme of time travel MR. WAS connects the end to the beginning so everything adds up in an absolutely fabulous way. I actually enjoyed the book so much I took it upon my self to liberate it from the school library after which I loaned it to several of my friends the last friend I recommended it to lifted it from me. ...
