5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling...
If you're looking for something thrilling to read in bed at night while everyone's gone to sleep...this is just the book you should pick up (but be prepared to stay up all night coz you won't be able to put it down before you've read till the very last page!!) Kit is a fourteen-year-old who goes to a boarding school that looked chilling at the very first sight. And then slowly the frightening mystery of Blackwood unfolds. Apparently the entire school and it's regular lessons are a mere act. A show-off. Because neither the so-called headmistress nor the teachers are at all interested to teach anything to the students. What they want from them is something very different. Something evil...

The book that I read was Down a Dark Hall by Lois Duncan. This book is about a girl named Kit whose mother is going on her honeymoon so she sent Kit to a boarding school called Blackwood School for Girls. She meets only three other girls whose names are Sandy, Ruth, and Lynda.Kit wanted to go there with her friend Tracy, but the school rejected her. When all four girls first went there, they thought that the school was evil. They are feeling and seeing strange illusions and they don't know why.If you would like to find out who is behind everything and why Kit and her friends are trapped inside a school or what these illusions are, you'll have to read the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not ultimately satisfying
Having read the HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy, I turned to this, the first so-called "Sally Lockhart" novel I have read, but the second in the series. There's a complex plot which, in its final analysis, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. There's a strange, irrational mixture of the supernatural and the mundane. There are two important female characters that are not brought to any kind of life, so that they are fundamentally voids in the page: Sally and Isabel. There's a villain who always seems to think two or three steps ahead of our (apparently nearly completely mindless) heroes, who basically just sit around or parade around waiting for someone to try to kill them, or succeed in killing them. And the villain himself is vanquished by a moronic, suicidal strategy that wouldn't trick or disarmeven a tiny child in our universe. Precisely all these problems are also found everywhere in the DARK MATERIALS trilogy, so I suspect these problems will be found in all the books Pullman has written.

Pullman, Philip. (1986). Shadow in the North.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I expected
This book was a disappointing sequel to The Ruby in the Somke, which was excellent. This second book lacked the plot coherency of the first andthe characters were far less likeable.

Well, If you like a fun, adventurous peice to read, you should definitely pick up this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Deathwatch
Deathwatch was a very good book. It had a lot of action, gore, and there was a lot of suspence. The action was all threw the book. When Medic is tring to hunt down Ben it is very suspenfull. I also liked the fact that it started as a normal hunting trip and then turned into and hunt for someone. The book over all was very good and i really enjoied it. Ireally recommend this book to people who like action.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Appropriate for Children
My teacher assigned this book in the 6th grade and we read it as a class. I can't think of a worse book to give to 11-year-olds. It's depraved and sadistic. It bothered me and haunted me for years, and I still think any middle school teacher who would assign this has seriously questionable judgment. The older I get the more I realize what a perverse assignment it was. There are plenty of other books that can teach ethics, if that's what it's trying to do, in a less sensationalistic and much more realistic, nuanced and interesting way. If I recommended this book to anyone, it would be to older teens or adults who like thrillers and pulp, or to people who like hunting. Literature it's not. ... Read more

This book was great!
4-0 out of 5 stars Another Success!
The second volume in the "Blue" series, Stolarz continues on with her captivating writing style in the story of Stacie Brown. This is another book that's hard to put down until you're done and is an easy read. The best twist is the introduction of another Witch and the bait-and-switch of who we think are trying to get Stacie.I take a star off because of the slight predictability of the climax and the revelation of the antagonist, whom we get very little foreknowledge of until towards the end.But nonetheless, this is a terrific book.If you liked "Blue is for Nightmares," then you will love "White is for Magic."

Editorial Review

This final novel from the grand master of young-adult fiction is onelast jewel in the literary crown of Robert Cormier, who died in November 2000.In it he continues to explore the themes that are so characteristic of his work:guilt and forgiveness, misuse of authority, and the corruption of innocence. Buta new book from Cormier is always a surprise, and here he gives us a brilliantevocation of the detective story, in a narrative that centers on theinterrogation of a murder suspect.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Long and Boring
I thought the point of this book was interesting but very badly written, the only reason I got until the end was because I wanted to know how it will end. I was disappointed. This is an over 100-page-book written about something that happened in 20 minutes. If you like reading yourself too sleep this book is perfect for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rag and The Bone Shop Review by Kassi
In Robert Cormer's The Rag and the Bone Shop seven year old Alicia Bartlett is brutally murdered, and the suspect is a thirteen year old boy named Jason. The police hire an interrogator to get Jason to admit to Alicia's murder. The Rag and the Bone Shop takes place in a small detective's office. Robert Cormer sticks to the story and doesn't wander off. The mood of The Rag and the Bone Shop stays mostly sad and scared.

1-0 out of 5 stars What's So Funny?
I found this book not morally complex or sophisticated so much as just plain offensive and cruel.I don't see the point of taking us inside the minds of teens who would even consider such a brutal crime as kidnapping and terrorizing another human being. This has none of the layers and provocative questions of "Lord of the Flies."It was, to me, pointless. Most teens I know are interested in cleaner fare, in deep questions about life on other subjects. And despite the predominance of disturbing themes and plots in teen novels, many teens I know look for other books instead; they really aren't that interested in stories of kidnap, rape, incest, suicide, and murder.

4-0 out of 5 stars Every Teen's Secret Fantasy Revealed
Killing Mr. Griffin was the first Lois Duncan book that I have read and already I can't wait to get my hands on all of her other novels. This book tells what would happened if teens actually carried out their secret desires of killing their toughest, least understanding, and most hated teachers. The story has the five major sterotypes of high school;the shy, nerdy, smart girl;the beautiful, all-american, seinor body president; The popular, cute, blonde cheerleader;the misunderstood, expressionless, cool guy; and the big, loud, sports star. I liked how Lois Duncan brought these five different students together to hatch an unknownly deadly kidnapping plot. My two problems with this book is it kepted switching from one character to another and it was hard to tell who the definite main character was. It eaisly could have been Susan but then again David was a very important character. Also, I wanted to find out what the student's sentences were and if Mark went to jail or a mental hospital. But other than that I would definatly recommend this book to my friends.

3-0 out of 5 stars What I found in What Janie Found
We already know Janie, or Jennie, was kidnapped by Hannah Javenson. What we didn't know is that Janie's father, Mr. Johnson, has secretly been supporting Hannah by sending her checks every month.Janie finds this out when she is put in charge of the bills because her father has a stroke.Janie decides to go find Hannah at the postal box the checks are sent to.She creates a plan to go visit her brother, Stephen, at college in Colorado. When she gets there, however, her friend Reeve and her younger brother Brian dissuade her from going to find Hannah.Luckily, she doesn't go, and making that decision helped her a lot.I thought this book was good, but not great.I would, though, recommend the book for those who enjoyed the first three books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great new book from a talented writer!
Silverton Colorado is the scene of Alane Ferguson's new forensic mystery series for young adult readers. When a young woman is found murdered, Cameryn Mahoney joins her father, the local coroner, in the search for the killer. From autopsy to investigation, Cameryn comes closer to the case than she bargained for. Once again, Ferguson has written a well-researched thriller that seems more fact than fiction.Even the most reluctant reader will be caught up in the intrigue and suspense of Cameryn's involvement in her father's work. The Christopher Killer is the first in this series and is highly recommended for the young adult library collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting page-turner
The first book in Alane Ferguson's Forensic Mystery series, the Christopher Killer is a riveting look at forensic investigation through the eyes of teen girl. Ferguson is no newcomer to the mystery field, though her series of mysteries in national parks are for a younger audience. This book is definitely for older kids, and adults as well. This is an exciting beginning to what looks to be a terrific series.Ferguson's next book in the series, Angel of Death, is due out in September 2006.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a page turner!
What a perfect ending!Nope, won't tell you more about it, but I thought the ending was perfect even as the book stands alone...and yet it leads us into the possibility of more contact with the lead character in the series' future.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book!
This was my favorite of the Sally Lockhart books. The plot was fascinatingly real, and the ending was fast-paced and exciting. I really enjoyed the interrelated plots of Sally's predicament and the Jewish immigrant story. They were seamlessly combined to create an outstanding read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Trilogy
I stayed up until 3 a.m. reading this book on a night before I had to go to work. It was worth every minute: a page-turning thriller that would put any of the "adult" novels of the genre to shame.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting portrait of immigrants in Victorian England
This book is quite different from the previous Sally Lockhart Mysteries for a couple of reasons: The story really doesn't involve the characters we'd come to know and enjoy in The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North, with the exception of Sally herself. It seems to be more of a political/social history of the "Jewish Question" and the prejudices of and persecutions by the lower classes against the new immigrants from eastern Europe who came to settle and build a new life for themselves in London. Too, the identity of the Tzaddik was pretty transparent. I figured out who it was less than half-way through the book. Now I'm not saying it wasn't a good, fast-paced, exciting read...it was. I just think it was different and less of a YA type novel than the previous two. I think older YA readers (and adults) would be able to understand it more than the younger ones. It's a shame Mr. Pullman didn't continue with the Sally Lockhart series after The Tiger in the Well. I learned quite a bit about the times and the people of 19th Century London and am interested in learning more. Fortunately, I just received a copy of George MacDonald Fraser's latest novel Flashman on the March from amazon.uk. so I can continue my education about Victorian England and laugh at the misadventures of Sir Harry as he lies, cheats, and tries to get as far away from anything that hints of danger as possible...unless there is a beautiful woman somewhere to be pursude, wooed, and abandoned. Tally ho! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Guy Book
Ladies, buy this book for your hubbie or boyfriend before going off on a vacation, but pass on it yourselves. This is very dull stuff. Tully Mars, an affable cowboy, who throws a table through a plate glass window on his lady bosses ranch, hi tails it down south of the border before the police catch up with him. There he encounters a series of supposedly interesting adventures piloting a boat, teaching fly fishing, helping the 102 year old Cleopatra steer a schooner and tend a lighthouse. Every encounter with another person along the way is an excuse for a meandering detour of a tall tale. There is in essence no plot, and no character developmentI couldn't wait to finish this book. No more Buffet for me.

It's impossible not to like Hermux Tantamoq, the watchmaking mouse. Herelaxes in a flannel shirt printed with pictures of cheeses from around theworld, he has a caged pet ladybug named Terfle, he writes endearing thank-youletters to the universe each night, and he has a big heart--a heart that achesfor the fearless aviatrix Ms. Linka Perflinger, who unexpectedly visits his shoprequesting an emergency rush repair of her wristwatch. Little does he know thatthis brief rendezvous with the jaunty adventuress will change his life forever. When a week goes by without word from her, he doesn't know whether to be worriedor angry. He drafts a slightly unpleasant, then desperate, then not-too-sweet,not-too-sour letter to her and awaits her response. Nothing. Even nastyencounters with his neighbor (the horribly garish and affected cosmetics tycoonTucka Mertslin) and pleasant interludes with his artist friend Mirrin don'tdistract him from his new heart-quickening obsession.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Time Stops for No Mouse by Patricia
From what I have read from this book, I think that it is interesting because it is telling a part of a mouse's life. I enjoy fiction books and sometimes when I read a part of a fiction book, I want to read more to know what will happen. In this story you can see different types of attitudes or ways of being. This might help people because when they grow they ask themselves why are people this way or that way and sometimes end up following the wrong way to act.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book with twists, turns and surprises- a readers paradise!
Hermux Tanatamoq is the average watch-maker mouse in Pinchester, he leads a boring and dulls life. That was until, the beautiful, worried adventurous, Linka appeared in his life! She wants his to fix her watch, that was wrecked in a storm, but when she never returns to pick her watch up, Hermux beings to worry...
5-0 out of 5 stars A really refreshing, origional story
This book (as well as the other books in the series) are highly origional. I would totally recommend this book.

Bindy Mackenzie has always thought of herself as a kind, smart person who always did and said the right thing and was well-liked by everyone. That's why she's startled to discover, on her first day of Friendship and Development class in Year 11, that no one likes her!In fact, the only positive thing anyone said about her was that "she is a very fast typist."That's not even a compliment, that's just a fact!Bewildered, when Bindy has the occasion to document her life for the same class, she is determined to portray herself as likeable, while at the same time retaliating against her fellow students who insulted her.She is determined that she will make good friends, and that everyone will like her. Then, all of a sudden, Bindy is in danger, and only her friends can help her.Is Bindy as likeable as she sees herself?Saving her from danger seems as good a test as any. This documentary novel, with some of the same characters as Feeling Sorry for Celia and The Year of Secret Assignments, is a slice of life of the girl who thought she had it all, then found out she had nothing. You'll have to decide for yourself if Bindy is likeable or not, but the novel most certainly is.It is poignant and humorous, and seems all the way through incredibly realistic. You're sure to find at least one character you wish to befriend, even if you decide against Bindy. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Sci-Fi Read..........not my favorite type
I liked this book because it kept me on the edge of my seat. I was always excited when I picked up the book. The main character, Ann Burden, was very smart in all her actions. I liked the fact that the book had some information that made you think a little more than you normally would about life. I liked that it was in diary format because it made it easier to understand where she was coming from. I thought that there could have been a better ending to this book because the end left you wondering what happened to her. Normally I never go near the sci-fi section of the library. Now this book showed me what sci-fi is about, but it is still not my favorite category.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting
When I first read the back of this book, I was so excited. It sounded like an excellent read. I waited until all three books came out and then I bought them. And then I read them, and was extremely disappointed.4-0 out of 5 stars Burning
"Unseen" is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel crossover triligy focusing on a group of kidnapped teenagers.Salma, a privliged Mexican at Sunnydale Collage, goes to Buffy and Willow to help with her brother who went missing.Meanwhile back in Los Angeles, Angel gets involved with a man who was framed by crooked cops, and his psychic son.Cordelia and Wes track down a bunch of vampire worshiping teenagers. All of these stories do not come together in this book. But there is a lot of conflict; Angel seems at odds with Riley (Buffy's new boyfriend), LAPD detective Kate Lockly, and even Buffy herself.Xander get envious of Spike because of him and Anya having so much in common; Giles and Wesley have a battle of the experts.I liked this book, and I couldn't wait until the next one.One little problem is that the "Unseen" series isn't as good as "The Gatekeeper Triligy" or "The Lost Slayer" series, but still pretty good.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Burning
After reading this book I got hooked on the u.p.n. drama BuffyThe VampireSlayer and you will to. I don''t want to go into detail because I might give away the ending so my advice to you BUY IT...Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When Lightning Strikes
When Lightning Strikes is about an ordinary girl who, like the rest of us girls, goes to school, has a crush, gets good grades, has problems, and has one weird family she loves. Her best friend loves her guts but forces her to walk home when she could've driven home in a car because her friends thinks she has a lot of meat on her due to some football jock of an idiot. That's where the glitch comes in. She has super powers. Yeah: you heard right; she has superpowers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good!
The Confession was good. I thought that it probably wasn't but I remind myself that don't judge a book by it's cover. It was really good. It surprised me at the end. I didn't even get the killer right like I used to. And that's good in my suspense. If u haven't known. I'm writing my own book myself, it's called Vision Of Death. So look for it this year or next year. I am 13. I recommend this book highly. ... Read more
