4-0 out of 5 stars Respect the shield!
Half Moon Investigations is a surprisingly (and refreshingly) NON fantasy novel from Eion Colfer. I love the Artemis Fowl books and found The Supernaturalist to be interesting (if not great) so it's obvious I would pick this book up right away. I'd never heard of it until I saw it in the shop and the cool cover and Eion Colfer's name in big letters was the selling point for me, regardless of whether or not the actual blurb made the book look any good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Funny kid investigation
This book by the Artemis Fowl author is a funny study of a kid who has always known he was a detective since the day he fingered the diaper-bound swiper of a shiny bauble in day-care.
1-0 out of 5 stars >_< I expected better from Colfer
As a raving Artemis Fowl fan, I bought this book for 20$ at Barnes and Nobles. However, I was severely disappointed. This book is a disgrace compared to the Artemis Fowl series. It's a disappointment to see Eoin Colfer writing so bad >_<. This book has a weak plot, doesn't make much sense, and the ending is rather bad. I'm disappointed in you Eoin! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars INCANTATION
The burning of Jewish books in the town square is the first portent that life for sixteen-year-old Estrella is going to change.Set in Spain during the Middle Ages, the story is about secrets and self-knowledge.Estrella's family are Conversos, who practice Judaism in secret at home and in a church where all of the congregation plus the priest are like themselves. As the persecution of Jews draws ever closer to Estrella's own family, she is told about their secret, given a ring to buy herself safe passage to Amsterdam if need be, and taught the rudiments of kabbalah by her learned grandfather. This unlikely act is undoubtedly a gesture toward the current popularity of kabbalah and it does little to mar the credibility of the plot, consisting only of a few "kabbalistic" customs like wearing a red thread and learning the names of the ten gates of Paradise.More central to the story is Estrella/Esther's development from a carefree girl to a young woman fated to pass on her family's heritage virtually alone. As in other of Hoffman's books, nature and magic are intertwined.Estrella's mother is a dyer and a healer; her grandfather is a surgeon and a scholar. The witchcraft of which they are accused is practical magic, the kind that works not through the supernatural but through knowledge heightened by insight.Throughout the book, Estrella's mother teaches her about the natural world and how humans use it for good or evil. At the conclusion, after some horrific scenes of torture and burnings, she flees, having learned that "a Jew can never be attached to a place...We cannot have roots in the earth of any country, only in the garden that we carry inside us."This is a somber message for the teens of today and it is offset by other conflicts that they may find more appealing: the true nature of a false friend, and rivalry over a boy friend.Admirers of Alice Hoffman will enjoy her evocative writing style but Incantation is one of her lesser works. For teens and adults.Reviewed by Linda R. 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book!!!!
Rumble fish tells the tale of Rusty-james, a 14 year old tough kid who enjoys keeping up his bad rep and wants more than anything in the world to be like his brother, The Mortercycle Boy. The Motercycle Boy is the coolest guy in town, the leader of the gangs, and a mystery to all. Smart, eye catching, and tough; the Motercyle Boy is everything Rusty-James has ever dreamt of being. The only problem is, Rusty-james isn't quite as bright as his brother. He is more bronze than brains and rather reckless. Also he is incapable of understanding The Motercycle Boy and u can't help wondering... is being The Motercycle Boy really as great as Rusty-James thinks it is?
4-0 out of 5 stars Rumble Fish
While this book was exciting and interesting and kept me reading until the very end, I was confused.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rumble Fish
After reading "The Outsiders", I decided to read "Rumble Fish". 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Entertaining and a great value
I love this set.The performers are superb, and are clearly having fun with the reading, the text is unabridged, and there is a complete lack of chessy effects or background sound track, with the exception of segway music at the beginning and end of each CD, which I personally find very a very nice prompt to switch CDs. Even the questionable nod to femminism by including Lynn Redgrave as a reader for "Prince Caspian" does not diminish the production or entertainment value one iota. They presented in a different order from the original book series publication, but that was no matter to me: I simply listen to them in the coreect sequence.I am perfectly content to hear how it all began later rather than sooner.

4-0 out of 5 stars What A Wonderful World It Is
The Chronicles of Narnia - the audios were really quite good. They are each done by different actors.Kenneth Branagh, who I know from Harry Potter's Chamber of Secrets, did well with the story telling of the first book "The Magician's Nephew".All the other actors were wonderful as well. But the best, to me, was Patrick Stewart, in "The Last Battle". What a performance. He caught my attention. So very dramatic, very passionate and funny!Overall, I enjoyed it.And to me, it's almost up there with Harry Potter's audio, and Lord of the Rings audio with Ian Holmes, playing the role of Frodo. If you want to buy it go for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!
I loved this book; it went in really deep and certainly described everything very well. I got addicted to it, and, though, at the very first pages it may seem boring, it kicks into high gear very quickly. Though I may not as old as the book recommendedmeto be, I understood it perfectly well. This is a definite book choice to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
Wow.. I just got this book and wow it took me in like i was there i finish the book in two days i guess i have to get the next book! "Burned" can wait to read that one...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I didn't quite know what to expect. I'd heard very little about it. Crank was, by far, the best book I've read in a LONG while. Sad, but very true to life. The story was so engaging that I couldn't put the book down even once...I stayed up until 2am to finish it.

Editorial Review

Froggy is distracted. At home his mother has to remind him to do his homework, and at school his teacher chides him for not paying attention. But how can he? Halloween is next week and he must come up with a great costume. How about Super Frog? "Flying high over the city.Faster than a dragonfly! Stronger than a bullfrog!" Or perhaps something scarier: Count Von Frogula! But then his mom reminds him that vampires have fangs, and that Froggy is a toothless wonder. Froggy has a lot of spooky thoughts on his mind, that's for sure; little does he know just how scary his Halloween will be!Jonathan London hones in on the joys and horrors of Halloween for the young, especially for boys who are not prepared for the amorous attentions of girls. He and Frank Remkiewicz (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Froggy's Halloween is rated number one
Our first grade class rated all of Jonathon London's Froggy books.Froggy's Halloween was rated the favorite Jonathon London book.Jonathon London has made reluctant readers excited about reading.Kids love watching Froggy get into trouble.

1-0 out of 5 stars Froggy's Halloween
I purchased this book for my two sons ages 2 and 4.I am incredibly disappointed in this book.Jonathan London should be ashamed of this title. If you as a parent think it is funny for the text to teach your child "trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat; if you don't, I don't care, I'll pull down your underwear" then buy it.Otherwise, boycott this book for all the right reasons!!!Truly distasteful and offensive literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ready for Halloween?
It's almost Halloween and Froggy still can't decide what costume to wear.Should he be super frog, ghost frog or vampire frog? How about a football player, cowboy or even a zombie. All week he gets ready for Halloween, carving pumpkins and hanging spider webs and ghosts. He's even practiced saying "Trick or treat, smell my feet./Give me something good to eat."Finally when the big day comes, Froggy decides to be the Frog Prince, complete with crown and sword. Now he's off for a scary evening of tricks, treats, surprises and fun.....No one captures the essence of a busy pre-schooler as well as Jonathan London and Frank Remkiewicz.Mr London's lively text is full of sound effects, energy and humor and complemented by Mr Remkiewicz's bold, bright and expressive artwork.Together they've authored a clever and entertaining story about an engaging character that your little "Froggy" will easily identify with. This is the perfect read aloud story to help everyone get into the Halloween spirit. Froggy's Halloween is part of a marvelous series that youngsters just can't get enough of.Read them all and enjoy! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Go ask alice is two thumbs down the drain and into the sewer
Go ask alice is an ok book, i think this is a two star book it has good information about what doing drugs could lead upto.i still think this book has alot of fiction instead of facts just to keep the reader interested.some points of the story are major turnoffs for male reader's because it's really hard to relate to certain problems of the opposite sex.The author of the diary uses all these big words and seems articulate but then again time after time makes alot of dumb decisions.Everyone makes bad decisions, but anyone with enough sense would try to get help or change their lifestlye, also the author cleary isnt an fifteen year old girl.

2-0 out of 5 stars Its authenticity aside--does this even hold up as fiction?
Ok, first things first: I determined that this thing was a hoax when I first read it as a cynical eleven-year-old back in '86 or so: that a homeless, nearly-perpetually-high, hitchhiking-across-the-country-and-borrowing-strangers'-clothing "Alice" would be able to keep track of and catalog (remarkably lucid) journal entries written on random "scraps of bags, envelopes, etc." struck me as ridiculously implausible. Its inauthenticity (and the ethics of continuing to publish it as "nonfiction" aside), though, does this book even hold up as fiction? Just barely. I've always been a huge fan of the first-person narrative, and this book does a decent job of entertaining the reader and making her care--a bit--about the heroine (not just the heroin--heh). Also, that the real author (Beatrice Sparks) was, at least, female is a minor plus. On another note, even if the purported identity of _Go Ask Alice_'s author is fake, its groovy late '60s/early '70s cultural references are certainly the real deal, and, unlike most other YA novels' of its caliber from the same period, this thing is still in print! Educationally speaking, I can imagine holding it up side-by-side with the anti-drug public service announcements (produced by the Lockheed Corporation, etc.) of the same period in a unit on social/cultural American history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Interesting Story
This book is what I've come to expect from Shannon Hale: good story, good characters, good writing, and a good ending.I've loved the previous books in this series The Goose Girl and Enna Burning and was not let down by this story.Rizo is a great character who undergoes a lot of changes as he discovers himself in this book.My favorite part of Shannon Hale's books is that they are prefect faire tales without being overly fantastical or magical. There is just a sprinkle of magic and good common sense. While I think her previous book would be good for boys and girls this book is the first with a male lead and may bring her books to the attention of more young men.Overall, I think this is a great story for both kids and adults.I highly recommend it, but if your new to the series you may want to start at the beging so nothing is given away.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still good, But not Shannon's best
River secrets was very good, about Razo, who you may remember if you read the other bayern books. This is still a good book, but i suggest you read the others first. Enna Burning is the best and The goose girl is also good, but river secrets is no where as good as those.

5-0 out of 5 stars River Secrets
Shannon Hale is the perfect author; her writing is funny, exciting, suspenseful, and original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Returning to Neverland
For this return to Neverland
5-0 out of 5 stars Fits the original like a hand in a glove.
Geraldine McCaughrean's "Peter Pan in Scarlet" is different from all other additions to the Peter Pan mythos in that it reads like an extention of the original story instead of a fanfiction. There is a comforting feel to reading this book, like the feeling of coming home.It was definately a treat to read after having read the original novel.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fly Peter, Fly!!!!Wonderful!
Geraldine McCaughrean has created a fantastic sequal for all of us who believe in NeverLand! In this wonderful follow-up to Peter Pan, we are taken back to Neverland, where there is great adventure waiting Peter and his crew of familiar and unfamiliar cast. However, Neverland is a bit darker and more dangerous than what Peter first experienced, and the challanges he faces is much more than what he expects! From one adventure to another, readers of all sorts will completely cherish this wonderful book that picks up in rythem and beat from the initial story about the young boy who never wanted to grow up.I can simply say that the world at large has waited for THIS book written by THIS author.Ms. McCaughrean has done an amazing job in creating a sequeal that is as much a continuation as it is a new adventure.Peter Pan in Scarlet is a must read for every person who reads.Take flight and let your imagination soar . . . and fly with Peter Pan! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars a bit disappointed
I have loved everything I have read by Atwater-Rhodes in the past, which is just about everything she has ever written.Unfortunately, I found this book a bit wanting. She did have a great twist on the story, and I am not talking about the romance part, that was pretty obvious.More along the line of the magic. What didn't do it for me was the herione.I found her lacking. She just didn't seem worthy of all that worship, friendship, and love she received from every living soul she encounter.Atwater-Rhodes gave no reason for this blind faith in this character.Just what made her so special?
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book (INCLUDES SPOILERS)
SPOILER ALERT
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - Quenched My Thrist For More Interesting Shapeshifters to Read About!
I have read all of Amelia's books - Snakecharm, then Hawksong being my favorites. Falcondance dissapointed me only because I got one little taste of the characters I was REALLY interested in - Sive, Salem, and especially Oliza - before I was whisked off to Ahnmik with Nicias, whose character I found less interesting than the others.

I love all the books almost have all of them it's like being a teenager. I'm always wanting to find out what happens in the next chapter.
1-0 out of 5 stars Sleazy and Petty
This installation of the Gossip Girl series is just as shallow and superficial as all its predecessors are. The entire plot revolves around getting high, having sex, smoking, and guzzling down alcohol. The whole series is pure trash from beginning to end.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the others
I agree with what some of the other people are saying this book is no where near as good as the other books, it seems as if ever since the kids graduated the author has run out of ideas. And those reviewers who are complaining about how this book isn't apporiate for younger readers, shoud know this book is for ages 16 and up and every 16 year old has heard or used the "f" word at least once in their lives.Yes there is a lot of sex, drugs, and bad language but that's a part of the real world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DELICIOUS JUICY READ....
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I READ THE WHOLE BOOK IN THREE DAYS! I LAUGHED, CRIED, AND MY JAW DROPPED A FEW TIMES. IT TRULY IS A JUICY READ. I RECCOMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY TEEN.
2-0 out of 5 stars Totally Not Real
It about rich kids doing whatever they want like sex and durgs. I doubt such a family would allow their kids to go around do things like that. Trust me, it's not worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Corruption of Adolescent's Minds
I will always read book reviews over the internet before buying any book again. I don't even want to explain what's in the book because it is completely worthless. I did not have any clue that this book was not intended for a 25-year-old lady. I really thought that this book was a story about the awful consequences of gossip on society, for instance, or a story about a girl who gets caught by her own evil actions after gossiping and spreading rumors around. I did not imagine that it was written in such an inappropriate way to support gossip and other immoral behaviors. Besides it's pointless and disrespectful, since it's supporting something that is totally not innocent. Defiantly, I would not recommend this book for young girls nor for 18 and up, because it does not have any useful bit of information. If people keep reading these kinds of books that corrupt young girls' minds, damages their intellectuality, people will ruin the world. Gossip girl will not help you be clever, impressive, genuine, or popular. Invest your time in a much constructive reads. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Growing up Chinaski
I have been returning to the work of Charles Bukowski (1920 -- 1994) after reading his novel "Factotum" and watching the movie based upon it.Bukowski's novel "Ham on Rye" (1982) is a coming-of age novel in that it tells the story of Bukowski's protagonist, Henry Chinaski, from his birth to his young manhood, ending with the attack on Pearl Harbor. ("Factotum", written in 1978 covers the next period of Chinaski's life, after he has been rejected for the draft and wanders from city to city in search of work.) Chinaski is based loosely on Bukowski's own life; but "Ham on Rye" and Bukowski's other novels are, after all, works of fiction and should be read as such.
5-0 out of 5 stars The place to start with Buk.
Bukowski's novels (at least the ones I've read) all put together seem to be one long autobiography.Although this one was written later, it is the begining of the story, his childhood. Therefore I would recommend Ham on Rye as the perfect book to start with.Factotum picks up where Ham on Rye leaves off. Which follows intoPost office and then Women.By reading them in this order you can follow Henry Chinaski (the main character) from childhood to old age.I am a big fan of Bukowski's novels although I have nothing in common with Henry Chinaski I completely understand his world-view.He reminds us that no one goes further than those who start at the botttom.

5-0 out of 5 stars So funny.
Obviously the guy who said "real real real real horrendously unspeakably bad" doesn't know Bukowski.I thought the book was hilarious and sometimes it was the only thing that could make me laugh all day.It was the first book I've ever read by Bukowski but it instantly made me a fan.Since then I've read many of his other books and this one is still my favorite. ...
