Editorial Review

They were just a soft, ordinary pair of thrift-shop jeans until the fourgirls took turns trying them on--four girls, that is, who are close friends, about to be parted for the summer, with very different sizes and builds, not tomention backgrounds and personalities. Yet the pants settle on each girl's hipsperfectly, making her look sexy and long-legged and feel confident as a teenagercan feel. "These are magical Pants!" they realize, and so they make a pact toshare them equally, to mail them back and forth over the summer from whereverthey are. Beautiful, distant Lena is going to Greece to be with hergrandparents; strong, athletic Bridget is off to soccer camp in Baja,California; hot-tempered Carmen plans to have her divorced father all to herselfin South Carolina; and Tibby the rebel will be left at home to slave for minimumwage at Wallman's.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome book!
The Sister Hood of the Traveling Pants is an awesome book.It talks about the trials and tribulations about four teenage girls who have to be separated for the summer. It may not seem like a big deal but it is to them because they have been friends their whole lives.Their moms met in a yoga class when they were pregnant. All of the girls end up in different places of the world: Lena ends up in Greece, Carmen leaves for her dad's house, Bridgett travels to Baja Mexico for a soccer camp, and Tibby stays at home. Before they are about to separate, they find this pair of pants that Carmen got at the thrift store. It fits them all perfectly, as if by magic. So, they make up the sisterhood and make up all of the rules. They record all of their adventures of the pants at the end of the summer and share them with each other. Its' a great story and I would encourage anybody to read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing incredible
This book rather disappointed me. It wasn't able to catch my attention, and didn't really have a point. There wasn't really a plot, and the character was a rather flat, bland young man. The writing style was interesting, certainly, but it got extremely annoying and repetitive after a while. Too many things were used again and again, which didn't help this story one bit.
5-0 out of 5 stars American Classic
This coming of age story should be read by everyone. However, smart young people will gain more from it than less observant (or more stupid) young people. Take the test, if you like the book, then chances are you are smart. If you didn't like the book, or you didn't read the book, then you are probably stupid.

5-0 out of 5 stars "...incredibly attractive breakdown."
Some people really hate this book -- I can see why you think Holden is irritating, but...it's not that he's right about things, or that you're meant to think he's right. Or that you should even BELIEVE half the things he says. He's not going to come out and say,

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
Morgan Menzie's Diary of an anorexic girl is truly amazing and heartfelt. It is by far one of the best diaries that i have ever read. It goes deep into Blythes descent into Anorexia and to her recovery. I used to anorexic, so this truly touched me. Though it may be triggering to someone who is still battling an ED it is worth the Read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Talk About Real!!!
Morgan Menzie's book was the first diary of an eating disorder I read, and is the reason why I continue to read more ED books. She unlike many ED authors talked about things other that just her eating disorder, such as relationships with friends, family and boyfriends. It's not a book that's all about anorexia but does emphasize more so than other subjects in her diary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever Written
This book was probably the best book that I ever read. I absolutely loved it. I couldn't put it down. When Blythe would be so close in getting a boyfriend and then fly off the handle it would get me worked up, and it made me want to tell her "Calm down. Do you know what you doing?" I would get happy for her when she was so close to a boyfriend and something to bring happiness into her life, and then she would do something crazy and destroy all my hopes of her being happy. I couldn't believe that Becca was so stupid and didn't realize that she wasn't getting better. I can't believe that she just believed the food charts that Blythe did, even though she hadn't gained any weight or looked any diifferent. I was like "How stupid can you be lady!" This book really gets you involed and it made me wonder how people can be anorexic, but the problem is not their eating it is caused by something else. Once you figure out that problem and get it solved it will be easier to get yourself back on track and keep you regular. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
I have a confession to make.I have never particularly cared for Lewis Carroll's (aka the Reverend Charles Dodgson's) ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND.Although I've read that story, once, it has never even come close to being one of my favorites. With Frank Beddor's THE LOOKING GLASS WARS, however, I can easily say that I was drawn into the story from the first page--and have found a new book to add to my list of favorites.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Re-Imagining
I don't normally write book reviews and I have no intention of heading off in this direction too often, but "The Looking Glass Wars" inspired me enough to share my enthusiasm. Frank Beddor's book takes the premise of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" adventures and stands it on its head. Essentially, what Beddor does is re-imagine Carroll's fantasies as the true adventures of a young girl named Alyss (Carroll even got the name wrong, apparently!), a princess who lives in an alternate universe called Wonderland. As the book opens, she is the heir apparent about to celebrate her seventh birthday, but is forced to make an escape when her evil aunt murders her parents and lays claim to the throne. Fleeing through a `looking glass,' Alice is deposited in mid-18th century England, where she is soon relating her tales to an opportunistic English writer named Reverend Charles Dodgson (whose nom-de-plume -in reality -is Lewis Carroll).
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wonderland
Many people keep comparing this to Lewis Carroll's original. That cannot be done. This book is a masterpiece that stands on it's own.The only knowledge one must have of "Alice" to read about THIS "Alyss" is the fact that Lewis Carroll wrote a book entitled Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland, that was often classified as being fanciful, which the children of today speculate the author as being on crack when writing it.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Invasion of the Boy Snatchers
If you had a boyfriend who you liked a lot how would you feel if someone stole him from you?Well that's how the girls feel in this book. The book I read was really good. It ended with the girl getting caught stilling everybody else's belongings. Then she tried to get other girls boyfriends so that they would want to go out with her. So then she had to go back to Spain.

Ever since Mark's parents died, he has been living with Bryon. The boys are more like brothers than mere friends. They've been inseparable--until recently. Something seems to be changing between them, and Bryon can't figure it out. Is it Cathy, Bryon's new girlfriend? Is Mark jealous? 3-0 out of 5 stars That was then , this is now
The theme of the story "This was then this is now" is changed throughout the story the boys Mark and Bryon seem to be in school and walking down the streets most of the time and wondering anywhere there situation is. The aspect of the story I personally liked was that Mark and Bryon are in different situations, like Bryon has a girlfriend that mark and is constantly getting into street fights and mark is jealous of Bryon having a girlfriend. And at the same time mark seems to be coming up with money and can't control himself and won't seem to quit most of the time. The aspects that weren't so interesting to me were that Bryon gets into street fights the were caused by the stupidest things and doesn't want to resolve the problems he just wants to fight all the time and he gets tired of fighting already. I think that images that Hinton put out were very persuading to the person whose reading the book, because he said how Bryon sticks up for mark in a fight and how there on the streets dealing with the problems, I also thought that the main characters were believable because I would think the boys were just the typical best friends that get in to situations that the boys get into in the story. The story was an adventure that two best friends have in a lifetime.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oustanding, Hard Hitting
As a 7th Grade Language Arts teacher in search ofgood book for my students, I hit a home run with this one.Wow! Powerful!
5-0 out of 5 stars Another outstanding novel about teen boys in trouble
When I was in tenth grade, my English teacher read "The Outsiders" by S. E. Hinton to the class. I loved the book so much that I reread it one year later and consider it one of the best examples of fiction about teenagers. While this book isn't quite the caliber of "Outsiders" it is another excellent novel about teenagers experiencing troubles.

2-0 out of 5 stars The hobbit
I didnt really enjoy this book because it was hard for me to understand. I understood the characters and i could picture what they looked liked because it has good discription, but other than that the rest of the book didn't grab my intrest. The biggest reason I didn't like this book was probably because it wasn't real, like how the hobbits lived under ground. After reading this book I relized that i'm just not into fantasy stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of these books
The story of a simple man on a long journey, I enjoyed every page and have read it again and again.
5-0 out of 5 stars There and Back Again
I know that over a thousand people have reviewed this wonderful book but I felt so strongly about The Hobbit that I just had to say sonething about it. The Hobbit was and still is a masterpiece, and will remain a masterpiece for centuries to come. One of the main reasons why is that its prose and style of writing is absolutely captivating. It has a simple and delightful charm to it that makes you want to keep on reading. Its plot is also a treat. It is not boring or stale, as I've heard others say, but lively. Also, with this book, there are many coicidences and connections among characters (so what if Bilbo didn't kill Smaug? Think about it. Could a little hobbit really kill a dragon twenty times his size, despite his cunning and discreetness? I don't think so). Best of all, though, it has a sweet message and theme that can actually leave you pondering about it for hours. I have read the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and I have to admit that, in my opinion, The Hobbit is better, despite the Trilogy's genius. What can I say? It's an excellent read, and definetly worth your time. The only thing you'll regret is that it will go by too fast. ... Read more

Nine-year-old Tiffany Aching needs magic--fast! Her sticky little brother Wentworth has been spirited away by the evil Queen of faerie, and it’s up to her to get him back safely. Having already decided to grow up to be a witch, now all Tiffany has to do is find her power. But she quickly learns that it’s not all black cats and broomsticks. According to her witchy mentor Miss Tick, "Witches don’t use magic unless they really have to...We do other things. A witch pays attention to everything that’s going on...A witch uses her head...A witch always has a piece of string!" Luckily, besides her trusty string, Tiffany’s also got the Nac Mac Feegles, or the Wee Free Men on her side. Small, blue, and heavily tattooed, the Feegles love nothing more than a good fight except maybe a drop of strong drink! Tiffany, heavily armed with an iron skillet, the feisty Feegles, and a talking toad on loan from Miss Tick, is a formidable adversary. But the Queen has a few tricks of her own, most of them deadly. Tiffany and the Feegles might get more than they bargained for on the flip side of Faerie!Prolific fantasy author Terry Pratchett has served up another delicious helping of his famed Discworld fare. The not-quite-teen set will delight in the Feegles’ spicy, irreverent dialogue and Tiffany’s salty determination. Novices to Pratchett’s prose will find much to like here, and quickly go back to devour the rest of his Discworld offerings. Scrumptiously recommended. (Ages 10 to 14) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Discworld
I've decided he's too good and too prolific for me to write a brand new review every single time I read one of his books. Discworld currently has 34 titles and every one of them will probably knock your socks off. His mind bubbles and flashes like a boiling pot of electric eels, and I simply can't get enough of his writing.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the hype...
This was certainly no Harry Potter. It was a cute little story, mind you, but I don't think it was as fabulous as the reviews lead you to believe.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, well exceeded my expectations
While the story starts out rather conventionally, the wee free men are a wonder, and the world you are drawn into is far more interesting, delightful and sophisticated than I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, well-done fiction -a teacher's review
'The Cay' is a wonderful little bit of fiction. It has action, is well-written and contains such themes as overcoming racism, sacrifice and resourcefulness. Its quick-moving plot and easy to read style should make it accessible to almost anyone.
4-0 out of 5 stars Why this book inspired me
This book inspired me by perservering. The young boy on the island never gave up after he became blind. For example, he asked the elderly man to show him how to survive on the island. This helped me in school because even though something might happen to me I shouldn't give up.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book
The Cay, by Theodore Taylor is an extremely exciting book, which could be read by ages 10 and up because it does not have very hard vocabulary, and it is easy to understand. This book takes place on the island of Curacao in the Caribbean, during World War Two. Philip, who is a preteen lives on Curacao is from Virginia, and lives on the island with his mother, and father. German submarines have surrounded the island and were destroying boats that were trying to get off the island. When Philips mother gets scared that the Germans will attack the island, she wants to get back to the United States with Philip. When their boat leaves, the Germans do not torpedo them...yet. Philip ends up on a raft with an old colored deckhand from the boat. He is old, and is named Timothy, who is from the U.S. Virgin Islands. They keep drifting for around a week and then end up on a, small remote island that is in an area called the "Devils Mouth." Timothy has excellent survival skills. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone who likes, suspenseful exciting books. I think both boys and girls would like this book. Overall a great book that many people would like. ... Artemis and Butler, his manservant, are waiting at the restaurant when Spiro and his bodyguard, Arno Blunt, arrive. Artemis had created a cube that was a micro T.V., verbally controlled computer, mobile phone, and a diagnostic aid. Artemis won't sell the C cube to Spiro, but will keep it off the market for a year if Spiro will pay him. Spiro doesn't want to pay, steals the C cube, and abruptly leaves. Arno and the restaurant "staff," hired by Spiro are left to fight Artemis and Butler. Artemis manages to escape, but Butler is badly wounded with a bullet shot half an inch below his heart. Artemis must figure out a way to get help to Butler. The People, underground fairies and elves, play a part in restoring Butler back to life. He's alive, but a lot different.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Eternity Code
In the third installment of the Artemis Fowl series the boy wonder decides to do one last "business" deal because he thinks that the recovery of his father and his new outlook on life will soon prevent him from committing his scandalous heists. He takes the stolen fairy technology he got from his first encounter with the fairy people and makes a computer that is decades ahead of what is currently on the human market. He proposes a deal with a very powerful business owner named John Spiro. The deal was that Artemis would allow Johnny boy to buy some shares of the soon to be opened Fowl Enterprises but John wants that box of cash for himself. A gun battle occurs and John runs out with the cube and in the process john's bodyguard gives Butler a fatal wound. After some quick thinking on Artemis' part he is able to save his dear friend's life. He then plots revenge against Mr. Spiro with the help of some very familiar friends from the fairy community. This book is kind of intriguing. There is some good plot development and the dialogue was top notch. There is a lot of character development in this book and this series as well. There are some things that concern me however. The book is too easy, sure there may be two hundred some pages but a child could read it in a day max. Some places were kind of repetitive and had the same thinks in the previous editions. This book I consider is one of his good ones. There are some that I have to say need some work. I personally like his writing style. It has this directness to it that doesn't wander so much even though that might be a deterining factor as to the length on the book. I do not think that Eoin Colfer is a bad writer. I just think that he has time to refine his writing style and I personally would enjoy some constructive criticism now and then.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Amazing Installment
In the "Eternity Code" Artemis Fowl starts off with a bang (literally) when a supercomptuer (The C-Cube) he built out of fairy helmet components is stolen by Jon Spiro, a ruthless buisinessman, and his bodyguard Arno Blunt. Butler is mortally wounded, and the faries underground city of Haven is in danger of exposure. So, Artemis tricks a LEPrecon agent, none other than Captian Holly Short, into coming aboveground to heal Butler. That is the summary of the first few chapters. Not many faries actually take a large part in the story except for Holly and Mulch Diggums. Foaly only comes in near the end and he's only on the comlink, so I don't know if that's an 'appearance' or not. Anyhow, the seemingly grim book is humorous at times. I loved when Artemis scared the waitress (must read to appreciate), Mulch's attempt at driving, and the scene when Pex and Chips try to 'bury Mulch deep'. The ending was kind of depressing, and I wondered if this was the end of the series, but I read it when book 4 wasn't even an internet rumor yet, although newcomers have the benifit of not having to wait 2 years (or however long it took) for the next one. Read the first two though, or you will be EXTREMELY confused. ... Read more

For those of you that are familiar with the Gossip Girl series this is one of the better ones because some of the characters act slightly differently then you would expect them to and this adds a nice change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artemis Fowl:the arctic incident
Artemis Fowl is set on an estate outside the city of Dublin, Ireland and in Arctic Russia. At the beginning of the book, it is made clear that Artemis' beliefs that his father, Artemis Fowl Senior, a wealthy Irish crime lord, was alive, is correct. When his ship, the Fowl Star, sank in his attempt to bring 250,000 cans of soda to the Russians, Artemis Fowl Sr. was found alive and has been held prisoner for the past two years by the Russian Mafia. At the beginning, the Mafia has decided that it is time to negotiate a ransom for Artemis Senior. The price is very high and the deal is under a timelimit. This would not be a problem except just as Artemis is ready to get going; he is kidnapped by "The People" a race of fairies living underground. It seems that members of the goblin's secret organization, B'wa Kell, have been found with human sources. Since goblins are basically idiots, it becomes clear that someone not remotely related to a goblin is operating the fiendish scheme. Artemis is immediately blamed and is taken prisoner by Holly Short (Holly Short, a captain of the LEPrecon (Lower Elemental Police Reconnaissance) an elite force trained in dealing with the "Mud People" (humans) along with his trusty bodyguard, Butler. After it becomes clear that Artemis is innocent, they are recruited to locate and demolish the goblins connection in exchange for their services in gaining the release of Artemis Senior. Working under enormous time pressure, their task is accomplished, but when Holly and her superior Commander Root, set out to fulfill their part of the bargain, a takeover occurs underground in the land of "the People." Foaly, the tech expert, who is also a centaur, is accused of heading up the revolution. Holly, Julius, Foaly, Artemis Jr., and Butler race against time to save The People from an evil dictator and save the life of Artemis Senior.
5-0 out of 5 stars Artemis Fowl - The Arctic Incident Pleases Both Listener And Reader
After listening to a public library audiobook copy of the first Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl), my children and I were eager to see if there were other books available in the series. We learned that our library did not have subsequent copies, so I hurried to Amazon to see what I could find. We've now purchased and listened to "Artemis Fowl - The Arctic Incident" and have donated it to our public library so others may share in the story. Not only is each book in the series wonderfully written, with fully crafted, believable characters - insofar as fairy-tale characters can be believable - but the audiobook is narrated by one of the most skillful readers I've ever heard.Nathaniel Parker, also the narrator for the first book, is back with his fantastic portrayals of our favorite characters. This book has all the necessary ingredients for enjoyment:comedy, adventure, fantasy - all played out through witty and engaging dialog between easily distinguishable characters. The author, Eoin Colfer, must have been a Monty Python fan too, because some of the lines uttered as asides by a couple of his characters could just as likely have been said by one of the Flying Circus troupe. My family highly recommends this book, in either printed or audio form. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Body of Christopher Creed
This is a superbly written teen novel containing an array of excrutiatingly real characters. Being a teacher of teenagers, I see these kids at school on a daily basis. I've read a large number of Young Adult novels that create cartoony representations of what a teenager "looks like." THE BODY OF CHRISTOPHER CREED looks, sounds and feels much more realistic. That is the pillar of this highly engaging story.
