5-0 out of 5 stars Effective and Relaxing
The belly breathing, affirmations, relaxation get my kids calm! The four stories are just the right length to keep their attention and get them to do actual stressmanagement techniques. The author never tells the children what to do or that they are being taught. The kids just follow the stories and characters along and learn to manage their own anxiety with actual techniques.
1-0 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY
I purchased this cd for my four year old a few months ago and disliked it enough to bother to write my first review of anything i've ever ordered through the internet."Bedtime stories" is a misnomer. There is no story content. After the first few lines read by the narrator, I found that her unnaturally slow, moronic verse didn't have a relaxing or somnulent effect but did, ironically, irritate me.I sat quietly listenting to the cd until my daughter asked me to turn it off-- only a few minutes into the cd.I skipped through the cd to see if it got better-- it did not. I suppose the point is to bore the child to sleep, but neither I nor my daughter could bear to listen to the "stories."This was the first item that I've ever puchased on-line for which i felt truly RIPPED-OFF.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very difficult questions
Passages are easier to read than Princeton Review and AAMC tests. The wording of the questions is not as convoluted as the AAMC tests. However, the questions are very difficult to answer.Often times there is not enough information in the passage to correctly answer the questions, and it seems like there could be information to support more than one answer choice. While it's true that questions on AAMC practice MCATs 7,8,9 have many attractive 'trap' answer choices, this book takes that to the extreme. Therefore, I don't know if this is an accurate representation of the verbal section.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Practice, but Far from Perfect
Given the usually high profiled stuff from ExamKrackers, this book was for me a disappointment. Let me just say that if you want to score high on verbal, more practice is a must, therefore it's logical to get this book. However, if you are looking for a very clean practice, this book doesn't deliver. While i recognize that verbal section on the MCAT can easily allude to personal bias and subjective opinions, on the actual MCAT the 'correct' answer should be easily justified from the 'inccorect' answers. Around a little over 2/3 of the questions in this book fit that description, everything else is full of ambiguous and unsupported answers, many passages tho interesting are abstract and difficult to read. This can get extremely frustrating if you are expecting to see concrete improvements. However, by dealing with these flaws, and sometimes overly difficult (downright impossible or simply incorrect) questions, you might still gain something that will give u an extra edge on the actual MCAT, which could be sufficently more clear and precise given that it is the verbal section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Verbal Reasoning is not easy, GET THIS!!
As hard as you'll work on preparation for this exam- your preparation for the Verbal Reasoning section will be the most important. Most people complain about this section. I was included, until I took studying for it head on. I needed all the practice I could get and this book gave me 2 passages a day for 50 days. I timed myself (18 min total, 9 minutes a passage for the two) and corrected it that day. It increased my speed and ability. The guys that write these Exam Krackers books only want you to do well. I can tell after working on this stuff for five months straight that is the case. -Matthew Wolak ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Christians
I've been a Christian for years and have always felt that something was "missing" from the American church.Rob Bell's insights have helped my faith feel more real than ever before. This is much better than the religion I've been sold my whole life.I enjoyed the fact that I didn't necessarily agree with everything in the book and that was okay - I was challenged to think some things through.Read this book.Let me say it one more time: read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Base for Jumping Off Into "Real" Christian Faith
Before reviewing the content, I think it is important to note that the covers of the paperback copies I've seen of this all seem to scratch easily. So if you care about the aesthetics of the book, pay the few extra dollars and get the hardback. That being said, here it is:
2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to know what to make of it
American pastor Rob Bell is a leader in the Emerging Church movement, and this book seeks to apply the principles of postmodernism to the contemporary church. The result is a mixed bag. Much of the book is simply a call to love Jesus more, to rediscover the wonder and mystery of the faith. As such, it is just another book on Christian living, and cannot really be faulted. But it is the over-reliance on the postmodernist framework that is cause for concern.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic teen read
I never knew that this book was by a ghostwriter.I loved it even though it was alittle crazy with the whole blair and nate and I wanna be bonnie and clyde thing.
2-0 out of 5 stars Desperate, sucky, bad plot, and desperate is the recipie for the worst Gossip Girl book.
I was VERY dissapointed in this Gossip Girl book. It made me mad when I read the previous reveiws on the last book, saying that she had a ghost writer. Why I was mad, I have no idea. But, while first reading this book I was looking for hints that Cicly did not write this.
3-0 out of 5 stars Here's the Wierd Thing
I've been reading the GG series since book 3 came out, and well, I hate all the characters, and their choices, but can't seem to stay away. It's just because the books are exceptionally well written for what is basically trash fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Distinguished Mystery Book(siobhan fitzgerald, age 11)
Flush is a mystery book that I would highly recomend for younge readers. Dusty Muleman, is the criminal who is supposidley dumping sewage into the many waters of Thunder Beach to save money. This book also includes fantastic thrills to were Abbey and Noah Underwood come into close incounters of being caught while full filling thier full proof plan. They also have a couple of former crew members to help them capture the crook and save the beach for both wildlife, and themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hiaasen is fun and fast!
Flush takes place in Florida. Noah Underwood, the main character, is trying to catch Dusty in the act of dumping his casino boat's waste in the water. HIs father knows that Dusty is doing this, so he sunk the boat. Pane Underwood (Noah's father) goes to jail for sinking the boat. This book is hysterical, a must-read, can't-put-down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Law Enforcement Exam
I ordered this book to brush up on some basic math that I haven't used in many years. I got it in order to do better on my law enforcement exam. This book covered everything that I needed. It was just right! It walks through the basics and works one up to more complex problems. It includes clear explanations on how to solve the problem and then provides a practice test for each area covered. It even offers some tricks to keep in mind when encountering certain problems. Perfect for a refresher!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Low level book
I bought this with hope to get my brain used to solving complicated problems quickly. However, the quality of excercises in this book is very very low. I could have made up any of the excercises in the book. Unsatisfied, I returned it in 2 days. Do not buy it if you are very good or even avarage at math. This will not help you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Perspective
I first bought this book 1.5 years ago when I was researching colleges for my oldest son.It changed the way I looked at selecting colleges from my prior misconceptions that "bigger is better" (like large state schools) and "it has to have a well-known name to be any good."Pope succeeded in convincing me that not only are there invaluable advantages to smaller-size schools but that there is definitely something to be said for "liberal arts & science" institutions that offer a well-rounded curriculum.I was able to relax then because my son had no idea what he wanted to pursue. As a result of reading the book, my son is now attending Cornell College in Iowa where he is getting a wonderful education in small classes with caring instructors and an administration that "took me by the hand," upon his initial arrival as a freshman, & addressed all my fears and concerns about leaving my son with a bunch of strangers 4 hours away.Because the book includes little quantitative information (%'s of in- vs out-of-staters, tuition costs, % of students who graduate/return sophomore year/go to graduate school, etc.) you will need to supplement this book with another, such as the Fiske guide, to give you a basis of comparison across schools.Even if you don't select any of the schools mentioned, it is worth a read if for nothing else other than a refreshing perspective.

3-0 out of 5 stars No schools listed in the west
Wish I had known that the book focused on schools on the east coast, in the midwest, and in the southeast. No California schools are listed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information to consider and is thought provoking
I have a daughter ready to apply to colleges this fall and have found this book very helpful in planning and sorting through the myriad of information out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best College Guides
The Fiske guide doesn't cover all the colleges in the US, only about 300 of the 2200+. However, these 300 are probably the ones most people find interesting. Certainly all the big name schools are here. All of the most selective colleges are included. Fairly recently they have started including schools from England and Canada which offer excellent educations with a foreign hint at a very low price. In fact, the University of Aberdeen (Scotland) (founded in 1495 - talk about tradition) is considered the best value of the colleges.
2-0 out of 5 stars A great read, a pointless investment
The Fiske Guide to Colleges is notorious for not changing its text much from year to year, but it should be known for other things as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value, Great Information, Great Book
A really good book, I decided to hold off and instead of buying the 2006 version, I purchased the 2007 version. I don't know if there is a large difference in the information in each one, but I am glad I purchased this one. This book helped me select colleges I wouldn't have even considered or heard of. The information given is thorough and supposedly accurate, but the book gives you a thorough overview of each colleges breakdown from the ratio of males to females to the median SAT and ACT score. Each college has 2-5 pageswritten about it, of specific information about the nearby towns to the academic challenge and the social aspect of the college. Overall, a great buy for any college bound student. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Apocalypse Occured 150 Years Ago...
...and who would have guessed it? But that is the 'subject' of this incredible book: the eternal battle between Good and Evil fought across a no-man's land of bleached desert sparsely alleviated by barricaded towns of terrified civilians forever threatened with instant annihilation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece
This is one of the best novels written.I couldn't put it down when I was reading it, and I couldn't stop thinking about it for months afterwards.I cannot remember characters depicted as vividly as his by any other author, and I think that is the real beauty of this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars DEPRESSING JUMPED-UP SHORT STORY NOT WORTH YOUR TIME
BLOOD MERIDIAN is a novella or long short story streched out to make a 335-page novel. There is basically little if any plot. While Cormac McCarthy can write poetically, writing poetically about nothing is still nothing. It's like a million times zero is still zero. Most of the book is just one murder, slaughter, killing, massacre, beating, stabbing, shooting, scalping after another. It is an unrelentingly dark and depressing view of a time and place in history (Mexico and the southwest in the 19th century) without any redeeming happiness or hope. You cannot read this book from end to end without becoming depressed yourself. While I admire Mr. McCarthy's writing (see my wildly favorable review of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN), BLOOD MERIDIAN is not worth your time or the fourteen dollars the book costs. Don't contaminate your mind with this jumped-up short story. ... Read more

The Princetown Review publishes a number of college search-related books, including the "Complete Book of Colleges" and this one. This book is essentially a distilled version of the "Complete Book", and frankly a lot more useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Absolute Best Book Available in America Today
This book is extremely well thought out. The problems range from very accessible to very challenging. The book is thorough and teaches Geometry in the way that it should be taught, with a rich mathematical foundation and many opportunities for students of all abilities to learn to think criticlly. The Teachers' resource materials are excellent. There are two sets of tests, one more accessible and one more challenging. The Reteaching and Practice resource is an excellent source of class work handouts. To me this book is just as fine as the Algebra 1 book from the same series. To the best of my knowledge, this is the best book currently available in the United States. Students who are lucky enough to use this book, will be well prepared for standardized testing. ... Read more

Editorial Review

According to Ponyboy, there are two kinds of people in the world: greasers and socs. A soc (short for "social") has money, can get away with just about anything, and has an attitude longer than a limousine. A greaser, on the other hand, always lives on the outside and needs to watch his back. Ponyboy is a greaser, and he's always been proud of it, even willing to rumble against a gang of socs for the sake of his fellow greasers--until one terrible night when his friend Johnnykills a soc. The murder gets under Ponyboy's skin, causing his bifurcated world to crumble and teaching him that pain feels thesame whether a soc or a greaser. This classic, written by S. E. Hinton when she was 16 years old, is as profound today as it was when it was first published in 1967. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars my inspiration...
When I had to read THE OUTSIDERS in seventh grade, at first I was just like whatever because I thought it was going to be another boring book we had to read and why can't we ever get good books to read? But from the first chapter, that was it. I fell so hard I still haven't gotten up.
4-0 out of 5 stars Battle Against The Socs - A Review By Izzy, age 11
A boy named Ponyboy, and his two brothers, Sodapop and Derry, turn into hoodlums when their parents die in a car crash. They join a group of hoods: Johnny, 2-Bit, Steve and Dally. They are in a battle against the Socs, who are spoiled and very rich. The Socs always jump the hoods (Greasers) when they are alone. They all have parts to play: Dally is the tough guy, 2-Bit is known for his switchblade, Steve is known to mess around a lot, Sodapop comforts people, Johnny is the pet of the gang, and Ponyboy is the youngest at the age of fourteen. There are two other gangs of greasers.
5-0 out of 5 stars rockin book
I loved this book because you never know what is going to happen. Plus I think it's wierd that people would go into gangs. I feel sad for Johnny for dying saving other people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Evil inevitably appears
The year is 1943. War is raging across Eastern Europe and Northern Africa. Italy joins the battle, and so does Japan. Peace seems improbable. War is war, and its savage and horrific reality leaves tons of thousands of sodiers and civilians either dead or maimed for life.
2-0 out of 5 stars "Classic" doesn't improve with age
Like many other readers and Amazon reviewers, this book was assigned reading for me in high school. I read it again recently when the kids got it...and found it has not improved with age. One wonders why generation after generation of teachers continues to tout this book as a "classic" when it's really far from enjoyable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Are you reading this for class...?
If this book was assigned to you as a high school student, you may have a tough time liking it. Your high school teacher either doesn't like it but teaches it anyway, or else loves it so much that he/she can't understand why you don't.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of two great books for stressed out parents
As parents who have seen many of our friends completely lose perspective as their kids apply to college, my wife and decided that we would not go down that road when our time came. Forget all the books that imply they will get your child into a "brand name" school. It's about discovering together a place where they can grow, and strenghtening your relationshipas you launch them toward their future. In the name of sanity, I recommend this book (and also a great one our own pediatrician recommended, "Getting In Without Freaking Out.") Stop hovering -- start helping your kids by not imposing your agenda.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book for parents of high school students
As a pediatrician and the mother of a senior, I see the unhealthy stress that my patients and some classmates of my son go through during high school, particularly during their senior year. This essential book for every high school parent will give them new models for guiding their child to healthy success.Rather than defining success for your high school student as getting into a college ranked high by a magazine, parents will learn how to help their child define and reach their own goals. For those who choose college, they need a parent's help to find the right match --- a school that allows them to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially.

Editorial Review

At the height of the Harlem Renaissance during the 1930s, Zora Neale Hurston was the preeminent black woman writer in the United States. She was a sometime-collaborator with Langston Hughes and a fierce rival of Richard Wright. Her stories appeared in major magazines, she consulted on Hollywood screenplays, and she penned four novels, an autobiography, countless essays, and two books on black mythology. Yet by the late 1950s, Hurston was living in obscurity, working as a maid in a Florida hotel. She died in 1960 in a Welfare home, was buried in an unmarked grave, and quickly faded from literary consciousness until 1975 when Alice Walker almost single-handedly revived interest in her work.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Challanging yet amazing book
I really liked this book. I thought Janies life was interesting. it was a hard read. It was ahrd to understand but i loved it. I like reading about what people go through and how they deal with things. This was definitely one of those kinds of books. I strongly recommend it

3-0 out of 5 stars Value as historical artifact
Funny how folks seem to love this or hate it.I admire the author's creativeness in the context of her time:the use of vernacular was quite creative at the time, and brings the reader intimately to the story. The very subject matter, a young black woman on a journey of self discovery-- easy to take for granted today how remarkable this publication must have been. That said, as a contemporary reader I didn't love this book and had to push myself to finish it (for my book club).Hard to care for this protaganist who passively scribes herself in relation to a succession of husbands.I just didn't like the person she was!But worth trying for yourself, I think.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for our times
Out of curiosity I picked up "Their Eyes Were Watching God" at a yard sell and discovered a gem.
