5-0 out of 5 stars 'Anne Frank, better than ever'
'The Diary Of A Young Girl: The Definitive edition' is more or less the un-cut version of the book that was originally published in the late 1940's. it contains approx. 30% more material, and in my opinion makes Anne more relatable than ever, particularly to adolescents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where are our great women leaders?
I thought this book was fantastic.I found Lynn Sherr made Susan B. Anthony come real to me.I loved the speeches and correspondence included in the biography...I would have loved to have met this woman...in her lifelong battle for the vote she went from a social oddball to esteemed matriarch of the cause.I really enjoyed the contrast between her a Mrs. Cady-Stanton.My previous knowledge of Ms. Anthony consisted of the 3 lines included in most high school history books....now I have a profound respect for her work and achievement and found her an inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluble resource for information on Women's Suffrage
Excellent book, a rare history book where the author allowed the subject of the book to speak in her own words, and not try to speak for the person. Anthony's letters and other correspondence are found in this book, and it's in reading these where we the reader get a more accurate portrayal of Anthony, then what we would read elsewhere. I used this book as one of my resources for a US History class, and it was very well received.I would recommend this book highly to anyone with an interest in the woman's rights movement, or anyone who needs to do a research paper on this remarkable woman. This is one of the rare history books that will always be interesting, as it was presented fairly and without predjudice from the author, or subsequent history. Modern Day Women take the right to vote for granted, but after reading this book, it's very unlikely that they will continue to do so. I know I had a whole new appriciation for my fore-mothers who sacrificed so much. A must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book - buy it.
My youngest daughter (7 yrs old) needed to do a biography on a famous woman for school and chose Susan B. Anthony.I must admit I didn't know very much about her other than she was the leader of the sufferagemovement.Read more

Did you know that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had an older sister who was another musical genius? Musicologists even speculate that some compositions attributed to Mozart were actually the work of his sister. Nannerl Mozart is just one example of how women and their accomplishments have been ignored or erased entirely from world history. This important book seeks to amend that gaping absence in history books and popular culture by acknowledging the countless women whose contributions have made a difference to modern society. 5-0 out of 5 stars All About Women!
Here's one of the few great books that focus on women and their accomplishments only instead of men. This book featured 120 biographal sketches of women such as Cleopatra VII, Queen Victoria, Anna Pavlova, Gabrielle "Coco" Channel, Harriet Tubmanm, Elizabeth Blackwell, Queen Elizabeth I, and much, much more. These biographies are all wonderful, easy to read, and clearly say what these women have done and accomplished. This is the perfect book for anyone who wants to read about women who have done amazing things. After all, women are capable of accomplishing and doing anything, and this book clearly shows that!

5-0 out of 5 stars A necessity to anyone interested in women's history
What a gem!I have many history books about women because I want to share women's history with my children.I was of the generation where women were left out of the history class and I feel that women are still in large left out of much of the classes in today's schools. This book does a great job of including many women from different eras, genres and ethnicities. There are photos and great summaries that are short enough to interest children, but in-depth enough to give the reader a knowledgeable understanding.I highly recommend this book to anyone, at any level!

5-0 out of 5 stars exellent!
This is the best book! Are you tired or reading about history through the eyes of a man? Before this history was documented by wars and treatys but this book is totally different. You learn about history as well asher-story,I learned about more than a hundred other women who changed themovement of the world. Some created inventions, others opened schools, they fighted for wemens rights and protested their weekness by workingtwice as hard as any man. This was a great book I really injoyed readingit, I hope you do too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad
The southern United States, in the 1800's was a land of the tobacco and cotton industry, and a land of slaves.Born in 1821, Harriet Tubman was born a slave in Maryland, and then she never thought that she would be the most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad.Early as a child, Harriet, or Minta, as she was called, was often sold from person to person, after getting a blow to the head from her master, because she wouldn't help capture an escaped slave. In her later years, she escaped to the north and became a free person. Then, after she beomes free, she helps the slaves that she knows from her old home escape through the hidden passes thus becoming a conductor for the Underground Railroad. All was well until a new law is passed:The Fugitive Slave Law, a law in which any runaway slave in the free states can be brought back to their original masters.Because of this, Harriet Tubman starts to take her runaway passengers to St. Catherines, Canada, where all former slaves would be free from the Fugitive Slave Law.Soon, after taking large numbers of slaves to Canada, Harriet makes a huge decision to take her parents along with her on her next journey. After a hard, back-breaking journey, they finally make it to St. Catherines. However, after transporting close to 300 runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman ended her journey and started a new one serving as a spy and a nurse. Before and after dying in 1913, Harriet Tubman was recognized as a great person and as a "Moses" to many of the escaped slaves that she rescued.Harriet Tubman:Conductor on the Underground Railroad, by Ann Petry, is a great biography that has suspense, adventure, and tells a great and accurate version of Harriet Tubman and her life.
3-0 out of 5 stars Harriet Tubman Conductor on the Underground Railroad
This is a very well writen book. It discuses the main idea of being a slave in Harriet's time. I loved reading this book it was a good book for a Social Studies report. I enjoyed reading about her freeing slaves. I would recomend this book o anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Harriet Tubman ***Conductor on the Underground Railroad
I liked my book because it tells you that women in the old days did alot of work.I liked the book because it talks about some of my history.I also, liked the book because she wasn't just thinking about her freedom but other peoples freedom too. The one thing I didn't like was that slavery exsisted in the first place. I also, didn't like the the book because if you ran away the master will hire people to chop off one of your body pieces. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As a woman, this book gave me great inspiration to do something for anyone in need of moral. A MUST read.
The book is wonderful. Every woman should read it. It shows that anyone can stand out in a crowd and lend a hand no matter what form it takes. An inspiration to women everywhere! A very real account of her life, feels as if you are there with her. Please read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Protrait of a Real Woman
As a nurse I have heard and read about Clara Barton for years. This book finally reinvents the tired images - melodramatic icon of female self sacrifice and courage, angel on earth and of the battlefield - and offers the reader a compelling, warm and very real picture of the person and personality of this famous individual. We see all aspects of Clara's character and the impact of the many choices she makes. We even get to see a few of the skeletons in her closet. Without this book, I doubt we would know that there were any! The amount of detail - and it is considerable - is so beautifully woven into the historical narrative that the story, like the Civil War, sweeps the reader from one new experience to the next. Read this and you will feel the jolting of army wagons along rutted roads, struggle to rest as the canvas flaps of your tent crack and strain in storms, gallop with joyful abandon along the beaches at Hilton Head - and much more. I purchased my copy at Gettyburg and it is the best "souvenir" purchase I ever made. Bravo to Stephen Oates!

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational and Entertaining to read.A must have book!
Mr. Oates has done it again. You will know Clara Barton ambitions, downfalls, her emotions as well as her eager drive and personal duty to serve those who suffered so much during the Civil War years. The contents of this book will jump out at you and you'll feel that you're right next to the personalities involved.Oh, what women had to go through to pursue a dream or an ambition to contribute to society.Clara has a heart of gold as her patients in and off the field well knew, yet she was being torn apart on the inside by the constant fear that she wasn't doing enough for "her boys".Her personal life was put on the back shelf as she persued her one desire, to help those who were less fortunate. You'll follow Clara as she goes through the blood, sweat, tears, agony and the horrors of the war. This is a true story of a dark chapter in our american history when brother fought against brother literally. It is also of a dream turned into reality that Clara Barton followed with a sincere robust ambition to pursue the betterment of her fellow man. By caring for the soldiers on the battlefield, she proved to the Union Army that those suffering needed love, compassion and of course medical care where it was most needed - on the front lines of battle. This is a must read book for those interested in hero's, Civil War history or nursing history.Stephen B. Oates is the author of other fine books in history and ranks right up there with the big boys in the writings of history ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A highly readable reference on a remarkable woman
This Newbery Honor Book, subtitled "A Life of Discovery," covers Eleanor Roosevelt's life in 11 chapters and nearly 200 pages. The biography covers Roosevelt's childhood, education, courtship, marriage and motherhood, entre into politics alongside her husband, and her humanitarian work independent of FDR.The text itself is straightforward and easy to read, presented in a scholarly fashion rather than the sort of fictionalized manner of some biographies. While certain events are dramatized, no dialog is invented - the words the reader encounters are those of the figures themselves, from journals, letters, and speeches. The best passages are the friendly and informative explanations offering children some background knowledge about the time, such as this account of courtship at the turn of the century, seamlessly woven into the chapter on "Cousin Franklin":
5-0 out of 5 stars Woman of the century
To my mind there are two biographers that write for children and that can do no wrong. On is the ineffable J. Giblin (author of "The Life and Death of Adolf Hitler") and one is Russell Freedman.Freedman is best known for his well-rounded and intensely researched biography of Abraham Lincoln (entitled "Lincoln: A Photobiography"), winner of the Newbery award.Turning his sights to a slightly more modern personage, Freedman examines the life and times of Eleanor Roosevelt.Read more

Editorial Review

She had herself committed to an insane asylum, circled the globe in 72 days, and worked as an elephant trainer, all for a good story. Nellie Bly (1864-1922) was the most famous female reporter of her day, and a pioneering businesswoman (she started the first steel-barrel manufacturing plant in the U.S.). Journalist Kroeger's formidably well-researched book, based on legal and archival material as well as Bly's more than 600 newspaper and magazine articles, paints a compelling portrait of a woman who learned early not to rely on men, yet coupled her can-do spirit with a vivacious femininity that endeared her to readers during a 37-year career. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An autobiography that should be required reading in American schools
If there is a single autobiography that should be read by all American children as they go through school, it is this one. Rosa Parks was the person who lit the spark that ignited the civil rights movement in the United States that led to so much positive change. Tired after a long day at work, she was riding the bus home. According to law, if a white person wanted her seat, she was forced to give it up. A white man wanted to sit, but she refused to yield. The white driver then ordered her to relinquish the seat and when she again refused, the police were called, which led to her arrest. This action sparked the famous Montgomery bus boycott, which led to a change in the law. Once the civil rights movement started, it could not be stopped, despite ferocious and violent opposition by southern whites.

the rosa parks: my story book is about a real story. rosa Parks is awonderful preson that changes people how they are with black peolpe. The front book is not hard hard cover; it has pictures of her and on the bus, and another one with Martin Luther King. The story Rosa Parks is black and white and by the front it title is Rosa Parks: My Story.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truth v. Myth
When Nikki Giovanni came out with her picture book biography of Rosa Parks ("Rosa") not too long ago, I was incensed by a tribute that I felt fell rather short of a rather admirable person. So when I reviewed that book I pulled out every biography, children's and otherwise, that I could find on Rosa Parks herself. Some of these were misleading, some simplistic, but one was a fine and hearty tribute. Is it any wonder then that that same book, "Rosa Parks: My Story" should have been written by Ms. Parks herself? With some aid from Jim Haskins, this book serves beautifully as the quintessential Rosa Parks story. It crushes myths beneath its heel, gives a great deal of factual information about the time in which she lived, brings to life the danger she faced, and is just about one of the most engaging books ever written by an average citizen. It is heroic without boasting or bragging a jot.

Dolley Madison is Hillary Rodham Clinton's favorite first lady. "She cared about the welfare of children," Ms. Clinton writes in the introduction, "spoke her mind about things, and in her infinite wisdom saved priceless documents and art treasures from the onslaught of British troops who destroyed the White House during the War of 1812." Young readers will learn about Madison's life and the lives of 42 other remarkable women, through easy-to-read text and many illustrations and photographs. They will also learn the answers to some important questions about women in American history: Did the American Revolution change things for women? Why isn't there more information about women's lives? What was "woman suffrage"? Why was it hard (until the 20th century) for women to get an education? Read more

This book did not have a purpose, Abigail Adams had no significant contributions to American society.Though she was a hard diligent worker the biography wasn't as captivating as I expected. This book's title claims a broad accomplishment, an "all your answers are here" assertion.Although it presents hundreds of historical figures, it is quickly evident that by "History of Women," the author means "The Plightof Women and What Their Heroes Have Done About It."The narrative embracesthe concept that from this county's origin to the present, women arevictims of misogyny, but that there are several heroes of the struggle.Despite the decline in feminist momentum, there nevertheless seems to be awealth of "historical" readings recently published by feminists.Acritique of feminism's tenants will not be attempted with this review, butit seems pressing to take issue with the didactic narratives of "historical" texts such as this one.Exempt from their presentations is aclear discussion of three essential components: definitions of the terms"oppression" and "liberty," and the ideologies that steer theirmetanarratives in the name of "history."The exemption of these elementsdoes not allow for rhetorical inquiry, which is vital for the veracity ofthe texts' contents. Feminist history, arguably a genre of its own, credulously seeks to convert its readers on the pretense that there is auniversal understanding of what it means to be oppressed and liberated. Once readers naively embrace this pretense, they are prone to alsobelieving the tenants of feminism.Perhaps, then, the narrative of thisbook will successfully promote the feminist agenda, but its converts willhave naively succumbed to the same tactics of hierarchical propaganda thatit claims to abhor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Women Finally Get To Be Heard!
Would you ever stand outside in the freezing cold, while getting beat and stared at all just to be heard and fight for something that you know you may never ever win? Well most wouldn't, however the brave yet very young shirtwaist girls did, day after day until something was done about it!The novel We Shall Not Be Moved by the author Joan Dash clearly and vividly informs readers about the "Women's Factory Strike Of 1909".Though many look upon the matter as insignificant it is truly the opposite as the author obviously demonstrates in her writing and enthusiasm.4-0 out of 5 stars We Shall Not Be Moved
The Story is about women in America. It was the year 1909 and new immigrants are coming from different countries. They get jobs as shirtwaist-makers. Some of the women workers go on strike because of the low wages and unbearable conditions. They are picketing even though they get sent to jail or beaten up.Then, some other women in the middle classes and higher classes start unions for these workers. American girls and Immigrant girls alike join together in some strikes.4-0 out of 5 stars Startling
I was shocked that these women(and a few men)were willing to risk so much, their jobs, their homes, their respect, their pride and their safty for higher wages and for more resect. Many of them were beaten by hird thugs.Stricker and streetwalker(hooker) were sininims,it was so scary to the strickers because if the strick did not in time they might be driven to being a streetwalker by hunger.Although this book is slitly depressing it is a good book.My words don't even begin to describe the pain these women felt. ...
