4-0 out of 5 stars We Are Witnesses
I am not a big fan of non-fiction history books. I find them hard to concentrate on because there are so many facts that they become overwhelming. But We Are Witnesses is a non-fiction history book that I liked. First, I liked it because it was set during WWII, which is something I am interested in. Secondly, this book is about five teenagers, which I can relate to because I am in the same age group. Each of their diaries was found. They all were Jewish, they all died.
5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping history alive!
This set of stories helps keep history alive for teenagers that have no concept of the depth horror that intolerance can achieve. All teens should read it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok I guess
This book was OK. I had to read it for school but I agree that it had way too many narrations in it and the only thing that captured the teens' feelings and thoughts were the scant entries from their diaries. This book didn't move me at all. If the author had put more of the kids' entries in it, it might be more effective. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fight for survival
In the year 2083 not long after the U. S. government went broke, the only form of education is EduTV. All school subjects are learned by watching television. For History, the popular Historical Survivor reality show is the learning tool. It includes reenactments of the Alamo, Civil War, and Roman Gladiators. Once you are done with your TV education, only rich kids get to move on to highschool and college. . . . unless you win a random toss of the dice. So when it is announced that the newest Historical Survivor show will feature kids, and the prize money is $10, 000, kids all over America sign up. Five kids are chosen, and they are sent to the Antartica to reenact Robert F. Scott's tragic journey of 1912 to the South Pole. How can they survive when a team of professional adults could not?

4-0 out of 5 stars My Thoughts
Personally, I enjoyed the book. I enjoyed the fact that Andrea White allowed us to read what the charicters were thinking, and how there were "stories" going on simultaneously. I do wish Andrea White had included more back ground infermation concerning our countries situation and how it came to be. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful historical fiction/coming of age novel!!
A Summer of Kings is a great book. Part Historical Fiction, part a story about finding out who you are and what your place in the world is. It is very well written, thought provoking, has wonderfully developed characters, humor, and romance.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Summer of Kings reigns true
The story of Esther Young's summer preceding the famous March on Washington is one not to be missed. It was amazing how Nolan was able to intertwine such an important piece of history with a fictional story of a young girl's road to self-discovery.Whether the fiction or the history encompassed by this story is of interest to any reader, he or she is bound to love the story for all its parts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this book!
The year is 1963. Fourteen-year-old Esther Young is used to being considered the dunce of her family. All she wants is something new, something exciting to come along and give her an opportunity to show her family how special she is. She sees her chance when King-Roy Johnson, a black man accused of killing a white man in Alabama, comes to stay with her family for the summer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another classic
Betsy and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill is the third book in the timeless Betsy-Tacy-Tib series. In this latest chapter in the trio's childhood, the girls begin to develop with age and maturity. First the girls turned ten which is a big deal for them, especially for Betsy. They finally have two numbers for their age. The second big moment for the girls is they develop their very first crush on the newly annointed King of Spain named Alphonso. And the third pivotal moment in their young lives is when they meet a community of Syrians in Deep Valley who has not exactly been greeted warmly by its natives. It is so much fun watching the girls grow up in this series. The tone of Bets and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill is slightly more somber yet realistic than the previous two books since it briefly touches on prejudice and unrequited first love. Even as an adult, I still like to pick up and re-read my Betsy-Tacy books for fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars just greatest book!
I adore Betsy-Tacy books, it's wonderful classic girl story but i think it can be interested for all children at all. If u like trhis book i think u will love Annaluisa and Anton story too(Kastner).

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Little Read
A good bit of entertaining reading for anyone, student or adult, wanting to get an insight on the deplorable conditions of life at sea back in the days of cannons and tall ships.Life during the days when the caste system was alive and well in the so called civilized western world.I would recomend this book as a read to any school age student wishing to see beyond the so called glory of life on the high seas that goes beyond Master And Comander.
4-0 out of 5 stars Only the best of Historical Fiction
Granted, this novel is fairly juvenile, but it was written by a historian and it does catalogue how life was on a frigate during the Napoleonic wars. Call me ignorant, but after seeing "Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World", I was under the impression that the only children serving in the royal navy were midshipmen (lieutenants-in-training, such as Robert Neville in the book) however, I came to find that this was completely inaccurate. One of the most dangerous jobs aboard ship was the powder monkey position, which was most often filled most often were the fastest and smallest on ship, the children. This is the tale of one such child who is forced upon a ship. A short novel, well worth the read. Intriguing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Healer's Keep
I loved this book!It is a companion to The Seer and The Sword and the storyline is just as great as the first book.Victoria continues to develop her characters really well also.Highly recommend this to all readers who like fantasy, young adult and grown-ups alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Word
This book hits a nerve with me!Evil people can prey on the innocent. What happens when they do?What kind of character is needed to overcome the experience of being preyed on?This book addresses these questions. It's so important for kids to learn about these sorts of things.I felt the characters were real people kids could relate to--and so could I, (an adult), which is why this book went so deep with me.
1-0 out of 5 stars possibly the worst-written book that I have read
I read _The Seer and the Sword_ largely because I was attracted to Trina Schart Hyman's lovely cover art, and found the book mediocre.I liked it enough, however, that I ventured to try the sequel, in the hope that it might improve over the first book._Seer_, although the plot became bogged down in the middle of the book, had some genuinely interesting characters and events; it had believable moral dilemmas and suspense. The characters in _The Healer's Keep_, on the other hand, were flatter than paper, indistinguishable from one another. The author seemed to think that announcing an associated trait for each character was enough to give them individuality, without actually doing the work of constructing separate personalities. The plot, meanwhile, is rote, predictable, and uninteresting; the world feels like a collage of fantasy tropes.Worst of all, however, is the tortured, stilted prose. This book reads as though it was written by an 11-year-old for a school assignment. With the current boom in appreciation for children's and YA fantasy, there are many more interesting, original, and well-written books in the genre available, both newly written and reprinted.I'm glad that the latest edition of _The Healer's Keep_ sports a bland computer-graphic cover rather than the enticing art of the original jacket--it's much more true to the reality of the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging and powerful
Although a fairly quick read, The Sacrifice is a nice addition to the wide variety of Salem witch trial stories out there. The Sacrifice follows the Faulkner family, in particular 10-year-old Abigail, as the witch hysteria hits their town of Andover.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brings the Salem witch hysteria to life
This captivating books truly brings the Salem witch hysteria to life.Based on research into her own family's experience with the witch trials, Duble succeeds in taking her reader through the agony of accusation, imprisonment, and trial.

5-0 out of 5 stars Events in the author's own family history come to life through the eyes of Abigail in this realistic account
It's 1692, and ten-year-old Abigail and her family are threatened by witchcraft fear in Salem. When the focus reaches Andover and her family, they find neighbor turns against neighbor and must choose their path during a reign of terror. Events in the author's own family history come to life through the eyes of Abigail in this realistic account.

This book is a wonderful childhood memory and I would suggest any parent having their together time with your child over this lovely book.Recommended for 7 years on up.

5-0 out of 5 stars a secret room
I remember reading this book when I was 13 and going through a very difficult emotional time. This book took me away from it all and helped calm me and face my life.I look forward to getting a new copy and reading it to my daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally found this wonderful book again!
In 5th grade, the Scholastic Book Mobile came to my school where I read The Velvet Room. Although we couldn't afford many luxuries, my parents allowed me to buy this book so I could read it again (and again) which I did! I remember being so thrilled to find in Robin, a girl who could have been me and how I enjoyed finding the velvet room with her. Although I lost the book during a move in 7th grade, I always remembered it and wished to read it again. But, as 44 years have passed, I couldn't remember the name. Then, after searching for the Pink Room or the Pink Tower or other dead ends, the name of the book suddendly popped into my mind like a miracle! I can't wait to join Robin again. This is a great book for readers of all ages who remember being young and alone and needing to find a secret place. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars new information
As you will probably all find out, the true story of Addie is in this month's issue of the Smithsonian Magazine. I have not yet read Counting on Grace but I will do so now that I have seen the magazine article.

5-0 out of 5 stars How sweet the sound
When a children's author wishes to write a piece of historical fiction, there are a number of ways to do so.They can write about a specific historical moment. The fall of Pompeii, for example, or perhaps a battle during the Civil War.They can also just pick a period in time rather than any one single moment. The most difficult historical fiction, however, is when an author decides to incorporate a real person into their fictional narrative. This technique is a staple of poorly written children's books. You know what I mean. The old idea that falls along the lines of Martin Luther King Jr. meets a kid from the future and teaches him a valuable lesson, yadda yadda yadda.Ugh.It takes a careful hand and a steady talent to do what Elizabeth Winthrop has accomplished with, "Counting On Grace".Winthrop knows that if you were going to write a book where, for example, a small girl meets someone like Lewis Hine, you're going to have to give your hero (not the historical figure) enough of a backstory and life to make her just as real as Hine himself. The joy of "Counting On Grace" is that even though this is a story about a horrific time concerning horrific events, it's not depressing or much in the way of a downer. It's a beautiful, emotional, remarkable little book.Mangled hands and all.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
This book is probably one of my favorites. It is based on a picture, which is very unique. Some parts were confusing, like the parts about the equipment and how Grace had to do her job, but once reread was clearer. I also wish something more would have happened between her and Aurther.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Amazing Family
I thoroughly enjoy reading about the Holocaust because it makes me so appreciative of what I have.I don't think I could ever have done what so many people did -- survive the hunger, back-breaking work, loss of family, cruelty and imprisonment.I have the utmost respect for all those who suffered.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhere in the middle
Well I didn't hate the book, nor did I like it. It made you content. I usually enjoy reading holocaust stories, but this book was a disappointment. For Marion's story wasn't interesting. It could have been better...much better. Marion goes to a concertration camp and lives decently. But with the over crowding her family is soon nearly starved.
5-0 out of 5 stars Four Perfect Pebbles: A Holocaust Story
This book is most outstanding! People will never know what really happened during the holocaust until they read this book. Reading this book gives a first hand account of what the living conditions were like and the extremely degrading humanity the Holocaust gave to the victims.

5-0 out of 5 stars As a child, parent and grandparent I've LOVED reading this book
I first read this book many years ago when I received it as a Book of the Month from the Weekly Reader organization. My parents had signed me up to receive my very own chapter books each month -- many of which I still own and cherish. However, of all the books I read during those grade school years, this was my absolute favorite. I was fascinated to learn about kids my own age who had shown such courage under terrible WWII conditions!Years later I had my local librarian help me search all over (this was in the pre-Internet days!) until we located a copy of the book.I was absoutely thrilled to be able to borrow a copy from the library to read to my own children.I began reading a chapter each day to my then 6, 8, and 10 year old children -- but soon half the neighborhood quickly learned to come over right after lunch for summertime reading, too.I recently obtained a copy for my 10 year old grandson. He's excited (and so am I) to read the book!It teaches children (1) family IS important, (2) not to give up even when things are very difficult, (3) bad things do happen to good people, but good things can happen as well!

4-0 out of 5 stars my review of eleanor roosevelt
I learned that eleanor roosevelt was a very kind loving person who had a very odd child hood, she was known as the ugly duckling. Her mother did not treat her right and made eleanor afraid of everything.
5-0 out of 5 stars A highly readable reference on a remarkable woman
This Newbery Honor Book, subtitled "A Life of Discovery," covers Eleanor Roosevelt's life in 11 chapters and nearly 200 pages. The biography covers Roosevelt's childhood, education, courtship, marriage and motherhood, entre into politics alongside her husband, and her humanitarian work independent of FDR.The text itself is straightforward and easy to read, presented in a scholarly fashion rather than the sort of fictionalized manner of some biographies. While certain events are dramatized, no dialog is invented - the words the reader encounters are those of the figures themselves, from journals, letters, and speeches. The best passages are the friendly and informative explanations offering children some background knowledge about the time, such as this account of courtship at the turn of the century, seamlessly woven into the chapter on "Cousin Franklin":
5-0 out of 5 stars Woman of the century
To my mind there are two biographers that write for children and that can do no wrong. On is the ineffable J. Giblin (author of "The Life and Death of Adolf Hitler") and one is Russell Freedman.Freedman is best known for his well-rounded and intensely researched biography of Abraham Lincoln (entitled "Lincoln: A Photobiography"), winner of the Newbery award.Turning his sights to a slightly more modern personage, Freedman examines the life and times of Eleanor Roosevelt.Read more

What did Navajo Indians do in World War 2?The title of my book is Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac. The main character is Kii Yazhi. He is forced to go to boarding school. From boarding school he heads off to war.

my son asked me to pick out a relatively short book from the library for his 8th grade book report.Code talker was it.After he raved about it, and spoke of some specifics, i read it myself before returning to the library. It is a beautifully told tale that intertwines the 'simple' english translation of a navajo language filled with spirituality, respect, honor, and a mythological belief in how things came to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Code Talkers
Code Talkers is a fantastic book. The author Joseph Bruchac really knows how to write a good book. When the main charector was growing up he was told he would be nothing. When he got out of boarding school he was on his way to being a big succes.

Legend of Jimmy Spoon
4-0 out of 5 stars Okay, so it's not the best...
My main problem with this book was that it didn't have a lot of page-turning material in it.Other than that, it was GREAT!It really showed how the Indians lived, and their views on different things.I foundit a little annoying that he didn't miss his family as much as I thought hewould. But still, I recommend this book to anyone interested in Indianculture but don't want to read through textbooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jimmy made a mistake that would change his life forever.
Jimmy Spoon is a ten year old boy living in Salt Lake City,Utah. He really wants a horse but his dad said he couldn't until he was 14. One day when Jimmy was playing in his backyard two Shashoni boys came up to him andplayed for a while. The next day they came back with a horse named PintoBean and they said,"If you come to our village, Jimmy, we will giveyou Pinto Bean." Jimmy thought, "Sure! Why not?"So he wentwith the boys to the village.Little did Jimmy know that the boys meantforever. After Jimmy found out he said,"Ok, I'll go with you for awhile". Jimmy never would imagine all the adventures and fun thatwould come in the future. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lost and Found on the Road of Life
Set during the reign of King Edward "Longshanks" this story describes the life of a minstrel's son.Adam adores his pet spaniel, Nick, and pals around with a boy named Perkin, who is a fellow student at the Abbey School. But the youth yearns for his father's return, so that they may travel the glorious Road together: singing, harping, reciting tales (called Lays), spreading news and performing acrobatics-anything to entertain a crowd and therefore earn food and lodging.
5-0 out of 5 stars "It should be a movie"
That was the exclamation of my 9 year old daughter when we were only halfway through the book.(I read it aloud a chapter at a time.)The story is riveting and completely held the attention of my little videophile. This is an excellent companion to a study of the Middle Ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adam of the Road by: Elizabeth Janet Gray
I really enjoyed all the things Adam went through to get Nick back from Jenkin, he was very brave the whole time.I thought that if I was Roger I wouldn't be able to choose to be proud or very worried about Adam. The Ferryman's were really nice to Adam and I was glad they were because Adam needed the help they gave.I didn't like the other minstrels in the story, something was fishy about them from the start. When Andrew stole all the food, I knew trouble was coming.I was almost glad he did because they needed to live and to have the energy to run, but what an idiot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Blue Fingers
Fear. That was all Koji could feel as he searched endlessly, for a destination, he did not know.Blue Fingers: A Ninja's Tale, by Cheryl Whitesel,is a book of adventure and ninjas. It begins with Taro, Koji's twin brother, returns from the market in a terrible storm. As he is drying off, a mysterious man greets Taro and Koji's parents. He had not yet seen either of them, when he offered Taro a job as an apprentice, because he had saved the stranger's life, just a few minutes before. For an unknown reason, Koji was told to go in Taro's place. He left with the man, who was a dye maker,to his house. After a while, the man grew tired of Koji's homesickness and said he would be going home. Not wanting to disappoint hi parents, Koji ran off without the dye maker. He went to his real house and crawled under it, to hear his parents and the dye maker talk. After hearing the discussion and meeting with Taro, Koji ran off into the bamboo grove, where the so called Tenju, or evil monsters dwell.Later that night, he was captured by what he thought was a Tenju. After walking for what seemed forever,Koji met with Dark Fire, the number one Chonin of the ninjas. He discovered that he was captured by Spider, Dark Fire's grandson. To keep himself alive, Koji proved he was worthy of being a ninja, by doing reconnaissance on Lord Udo's castle.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Adventure that Sets the Bar High
Blue Fingers: a Ninja's Tale is a deep, action-packed novel that guides the reader through the mysticism of the ninja. I recommend this book to anyone, especially those interested in the topic. The main character is easily related to, and the characters feel realistic. Also, the book does not use action to fill gaps in the story.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Childrens Novel
This book is a great book for any child.A lot of suspenseful moments and plenty of action to keep the reader into it.Right off the bat we meet Koji,a young man who's younger brother always seems to upstage him.He is instantly thrust into the world of ninjas as he is captured and forced to train to become a ninja.I liked how the action starts early and keeps going until the books end.The author really dived into Koji's head as he fought his personal demons and training to become Blue Fingers. She was also detailed as to the missions and training. One thing I didn't like and was disappointed in was how quickly the book ended and how the plot changed at the end.I recommend this book to pretty much anyone who just wants to do some light reading, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Bound" to be a classic!
This book is definitely "Bound" to be a classic, and not just because it a version of a classic fairy tale.It interweaves a story so common and a culture so exotic to many, especially young adults. The way the culture is infused with this timeless tale is what will make it a bonified classic. It cuts through the hearts of readers with raw emotion and is informative all at the same time.It spans different genres and is truly a work of literary art, not just in the young adult world.I recommend it to anyone in love with fairy tales and Chinese culture, struggling women (young and old alike), and anyone man/woman looking for an engaging read.I promise, you'll be spellBound and won't want to put it down!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Napoli's Best... And a Little Slow.
I can't speak for the cultural and historical accuracies, as I'm ignorant myself. I suggest reading all these reviews, as there is at least one that explains some glaring mistakes that make a big difference (unless you don't know about them, but what can you gain by that?). In a book like this, where it is supposed to be set in an actual time and place, accuracy is key, fantasy or no.
3-0 out of 5 stars Bound .... the book
this book is more geared for a younger audiance. It is the basic Cinderella story but told in a Chinese setting ... Read more
