5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome read
I read this book and could not put it down, I really enjoyed it. I found aspects of it funny, and magical (the sea breeze).
5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy Spending Time with Lizzie and Turner
I picked up Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, by Gary D. Schmidt, at the airport recently, and finished it the same day. It's a quick read, but one that leaves you thinking about it afterwards. The story is based on an actual historical incident that occurred on a small island off the coast of Maine in the early 20th century, re-told from the perspective of a fictional minister's son.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lizzie Bright Review
I thought that the story was very well written. The story line, I thought was very original. Some parts through out the book seemed like a little bit of a stretch. I found that the very end was a little out there. However, just before that, was very interesting. Some of the consepts that were brought into it were very interesting. Over all I felt it was a good book and I would recomend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Keladry: Protector of the Small
Many years have past since Alanna the Lioness secretly became a night and the King decided to allow girls to become nights, but not a single girl has signed up to be a page. In a way it makes sense, Tortall, although much more accepting, has not been magically reformed, and many people accuse Alanna of getting her shield through magecraft or trickery. When Kel announces that she wants to be a knight, she is shocked at the amount of resistance that she receives. She is to be put on probation for a year to see is she can "handle it" and many of the other pages are insulted that such a change has taken place. Still, she pushes herself through the teasing, the unfairness, and the vandalism using training that she has received in that Yamani islands (think Japan), which teachers her to remain calm and accept pain. Still, there are some things that she cannot accept, and that is the bullying of younger pages. Although she is not outright bullied like Alanna is, she watches as young Page's around her and tortured by the older boys. This is something that she will not stand for.
1-0 out of 5 stars very very bad
Okay...I will admit that I haven't fully read this book. I started reading and gave up in disgust. The 'prejudice' that Kel gets seems forced. Tortall has had a 'female' Kings Champion for ten years and the guards to the Mother Goddess are females, so the 'weak female' prejudice doesn't ring true, especially from the man who has to train her. Yes it's a medieval world, yet the queen can fight and so does her bodyguard, the queen's riders are amongst the best fighters in Tortall and many women swell their ranks, so why would people be against female Knights... Surely with the history of Tortall, people would know that some women can fight.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tamora Peirce is a (...)GENIUS!
I loved this series. It blew me away. I especially enjoy stories in which a girl is a heroine and not a guy. Although I've read plenty of stories where the girl is the hero, not one has begun to measure up to this one. The First Test is a great beginning to a well-woven, compelling series. This series is a once-in-a-life-time treat! The love story is innocent yet touching and doesn't suffocate the action and twists (of course I'm talking about the series as a whole at this point). Kel is a likeable detirmined heroine who has her priorities straightened out. I highly recomend this series and if you like fantasy, you'll become a lifetime fan to Peirce. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, well-done fiction -a teacher's review
'The Cay' is a wonderful little bit of fiction. It has action, is well-written and contains such themes as overcoming racism, sacrifice and resourcefulness. Its quick-moving plot and easy to read style should make it accessible to almost anyone.
4-0 out of 5 stars Why this book inspired me
This book inspired me by perservering. The young boy on the island never gave up after he became blind. For example, he asked the elderly man to show him how to survive on the island. This helped me in school because even though something might happen to me I shouldn't give up.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book
The Cay, by Theodore Taylor is an extremely exciting book, which could be read by ages 10 and up because it does not have very hard vocabulary, and it is easy to understand. This book takes place on the island of Curacao in the Caribbean, during World War Two. Philip, who is a preteen lives on Curacao is from Virginia, and lives on the island with his mother, and father. German submarines have surrounded the island and were destroying boats that were trying to get off the island. When Philips mother gets scared that the Germans will attack the island, she wants to get back to the United States with Philip. When their boat leaves, the Germans do not torpedo them...yet. Philip ends up on a raft with an old colored deckhand from the boat. He is old, and is named Timothy, who is from the U.S. Virgin Islands. They keep drifting for around a week and then end up on a, small remote island that is in an area called the "Devils Mouth." Timothy has excellent survival skills. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone who likes, suspenseful exciting books. I think both boys and girls would like this book. Overall a great book that many people would like. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars by an 11 year old boy!!!!!!!
This book was an amazing story. You will read this book again and again until you've memorized it. What happens is that Rolf a young viking boy is the best archer in the land. He lives a happy life until someone kills his father. He leaves his land to find someone who can out do him with the bow by three yards. I'm not telling you anymore about this story. Read this book and find out what happens. I'm sure you will have a blast reading Rolf and the Viking bow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent boys' story
My 12 year old son, ...loved reading this book.I planned to assign him to read 1 chapter a day and expected the usual struggle to make him read it, but he loved it so much that he finished it in short time and kept telling me what a great book he thought it was.He just didn't like when a dead character came back alive to fight Rolf, or the witchcraft parts, but otherwise wanted to read more books by this author...

5-0 out of 5 stars Icelandic treasure
Allen French has translated some of the old Icelandic sagas, including GRETTIR THE STRONG, but this is a novel, using some of the locations and settings and even some of the characters of the sagas.I first encountered this book at about the age of twelve, read it many times, and always wanted a copy. The story has plenty of adventure, some interesting twists, and is a good read, but it also deals with how to face adversity and the danger of pride. It's an excellent book for teenagers and adults will probably also enjoy this story. ... I love this series so far, both for the originality of the setting and the power that the story holds. Fantasy-medieval-Japan is well drawn--Hearn weaves a spell with his words, and employs description in a way that adds to the story's quality instead of burdening the reader.

The southern United States, in the 1800's was a land of the tobacco and cotton industry, and a land of slaves.Born in 1821, Harriet Tubman was born a slave in Maryland, and then she never thought that she would be the most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad.Early as a child, Harriet, or Minta, as she was called, was often sold from person to person, after getting a blow to the head from her master, because she wouldn't help capture an escaped slave. In her later years, she escaped to the north and became a free person. Then, after she beomes free, she helps the slaves that she knows from her old home escape through the hidden passes thus becoming a conductor for the Underground Railroad. All was well until a new law is passed:The Fugitive Slave Law, a law in which any runaway slave in the free states can be brought back to their original masters.Because of this, Harriet Tubman starts to take her runaway passengers to St. Catherines, Canada, where all former slaves would be free from the Fugitive Slave Law.Soon, after taking large numbers of slaves to Canada, Harriet makes a huge decision to take her parents along with her on her next journey. After a hard, back-breaking journey, they finally make it to St. Catherines. However, after transporting close to 300 runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman ended her journey and started a new one serving as a spy and a nurse. Before and after dying in 1913, Harriet Tubman was recognized as a great person and as a "Moses" to many of the escaped slaves that she rescued.Harriet Tubman:Conductor on the Underground Railroad, by Ann Petry, is a great biography that has suspense, adventure, and tells a great and accurate version of Harriet Tubman and her life.

This is a very well writen book. It discuses the main idea of being a slave in Harriet's time. I loved reading this book it was a good book for a Social Studies report. I enjoyed reading about her freeing slaves. I would recomend this book o anyone.

I liked my book because it tells you that women in the old days did alot of work.I liked the book because it talks about some of my history.I also, liked the book because she wasn't just thinking about her freedom but other peoples freedom too. The one thing I didn't like was that slavery exsisted in the first place. I also, didn't like the the book because if you ran away the master will hire people to chop off one of your body pieces. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!
This book had me at page one and still hasn't left me. One can't help but fall in love with Hattie, a spirited orphan who has been moved from one home to the next until she is offered a chance to create her own home in Montana. Kirby Larson creates a cast of characters who are both endearing and believable and writes a story that touches the heart. Her vivid descriptions feed the imagination and bring you right to Montana during WWII. It is a story for the young and old, history buffs and beginners, and will leave you wanting more.

5-0 out of 5 stars And it looks like it's climbing right up to the sky
Imagine that you're a children's librarian surrounded by piles and piles of books for kids, all published in the year 2006.How do you choose amongst your various titles to figure out what to read next?Do you pluck up the books with the shiny foil covers and catchy titles?Do you zero in on the 400+ page titles that all have "Book One" or "First In the [blank] Trilogy" somewhere on the cover?Do you stick only to those books written by authors you've loved time and again? For me, the decision to sit down and read, "Hattie Big Sky" was helped immensely by this first sentence on the authorial bookflap: "Thanks to her eighth-grade teacher, Kirby Larson maintained a healthy lack of interest in history until she heard a snippet of a story about her great-grandmother's homesteading by herself in eastern Montana."And we're off!As someone who also couldn't have cared less about history and historical fiction for most of her natural born life, Larson's declaration right from the start that history was never her bag came as quite the wake-up call.Plus the result of her newfound interest in history is this remarkable little book recounting a single girl's wish to go out into the world and prove herself to others. You couldn't have it any other way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Kirby Larson does a wonderful job at taking her readers into Hattie's world. The characters are strong and the setting is breathtaking. Events and issues during WWI are skillfully woven into the story, which makes Hattie's story believable and compelling.

I enjoyed this book very much as it gave some new insight into life in the concentration camps and how certain friendships were formed.Jack Mandelbaum is an inspiration to all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surviving Hitler-- Teaching the Holocaust beyond the textbook
Surviving Hitler is written for people between the ages of 10- adults. The story is written about a real person's heroic journey during the time of the Holocaust. The author does a great job of capturing the reader with real black and white photographs accompanied by graphic details of the experiences of Janek Mandelbaum.Through these photos and texts she allows the reader to feel a sense of compassion and connection with our hero and gives the reader a much deeper understanding of the events that took place during the time of Germany's invasion.Although there are times when the reader hurts for Janek, you want to continue reading for closure. This story would be a great whole class reading while studying the events of the Holocaust. It gives an in-depth account of the events leading up to and after the Holocaust. It leaves the reader in awe thinking about all the trials and tribulations that Janek Mandelbaum went through during this 3 year long ordeal.

This book was greatly written and very emotional. It was recommended to me by a former American History teacher and I was grateful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thousand years
Livia Bitton-Jackson's I Have Lived a Thousand Years is her story of life during WWII and the holocaust. Livia, known as Elli, was 13 years old when her family was forced out of their home and sent to Auschwitz. Her brother and father were sent to the male side of the camp, and Livia and her mother were sent to the female side. Because Livia was 13 years old, and still a child, she would have been sent to the gas chambers. But an officer took a liking to Elli's blonde hair, told her to lie and say she was 16, and led her to the path towards the camp, and away from the gas chambers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Ruth Williams
I have Lived a Thousand Years by Livia Bitton-Jackson is a disturbingly honest memoir of a thirteen year old Jewish girl living in the Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. The experience of living in the death camp Auschwitz is graphically shocking and distressing, but also miraculous because she actually survives. The story is told in the voice of Elli, in a direct present tense and, although a bit simple, the words and thoughts do seem to come from the mouth of a teenage girl.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK book; bad message
Note:This book is written for kids but I'm an adult.Sorry.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant story!
This book is one of the best reads to come along in quite some time. From concept design to execution the book is a delight to the eye and to the soul.A gripping original story line, setting, characters, illustrations, fold-out maps and diagrams make this book a MUST READ for both children and adults.Mowll's writing is some of the best writing to be found in this genre. Why this book has not gotten more media attention is the greatest mystery.I write and illustrate children's books and this is one that holds a place of honor in my library.I'm counting the days until the second book is released!

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULLY EXQUISETTE, SHOULD BE A MOVIE
Doug and Rebecca are looking for their parents who mysteriously disappeared. In the meantime their living on their uncle's ship. Joshua Mowll is an amazing writer. If there is one book that you absolutely MUST read it is Operation: Red Jerricho. The novel really leaves you hanging at the end. If you are like me then you will be anxious to read the next novel in this wonderful trilogy, Operation: Typhoon Shore! Joshua Mowll gets 10 stars as a writer and 9 stars for this novel, in my opinion of course. This wonderful page-turner will show just how far Doug and Rebcca Mackenzie will go to find their missing parents. This is such a compelling novel. I can't wait to find out what happens next! Buy Operation: Red Jericho TODAY!!! Trust me, you won't be sorry. If you already have this book but haven't read it yet then what are you doing reading my review when you could be finding out how exquisette this novel is! Happy Reading! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As a woman, this book gave me great inspiration to do something for anyone in need of moral. A MUST read.
The book is wonderful. Every woman should read it. It shows that anyone can stand out in a crowd and lend a hand no matter what form it takes. An inspiration to women everywhere! A very real account of her life, feels as if you are there with her. Please read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Protrait of a Real Woman
As a nurse I have heard and read about Clara Barton for years. This book finally reinvents the tired images - melodramatic icon of female self sacrifice and courage, angel on earth and of the battlefield - and offers the reader a compelling, warm and very real picture of the person and personality of this famous individual. We see all aspects of Clara's character and the impact of the many choices she makes. We even get to see a few of the skeletons in her closet. Without this book, I doubt we would know that there were any! The amount of detail - and it is considerable - is so beautifully woven into the historical narrative that the story, like the Civil War, sweeps the reader from one new experience to the next. Read this and you will feel the jolting of army wagons along rutted roads, struggle to rest as the canvas flaps of your tent crack and strain in storms, gallop with joyful abandon along the beaches at Hilton Head - and much more. I purchased my copy at Gettyburg and it is the best "souvenir" purchase I ever made. Bravo to Stephen Oates!

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational and Entertaining to read.A must have book!
Mr. Oates has done it again. You will know Clara Barton ambitions, downfalls, her emotions as well as her eager drive and personal duty to serve those who suffered so much during the Civil War years. The contents of this book will jump out at you and you'll feel that you're right next to the personalities involved.Oh, what women had to go through to pursue a dream or an ambition to contribute to society.Clara has a heart of gold as her patients in and off the field well knew, yet she was being torn apart on the inside by the constant fear that she wasn't doing enough for "her boys".Her personal life was put on the back shelf as she persued her one desire, to help those who were less fortunate. You'll follow Clara as she goes through the blood, sweat, tears, agony and the horrors of the war. This is a true story of a dark chapter in our american history when brother fought against brother literally. It is also of a dream turned into reality that Clara Barton followed with a sincere robust ambition to pursue the betterment of her fellow man. By caring for the soldiers on the battlefield, she proved to the Union Army that those suffering needed love, compassion and of course medical care where it was most needed - on the front lines of battle. This is a must read book for those interested in hero's, Civil War history or nursing history.Stephen B. Oates is the author of other fine books in history and ranks right up there with the big boys in the writings of history ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprise!
This book surprised me because Meg Cabot generally writes more modern themed books. That is one of the reasons I got it, to see if Cabot wrote another excellent book. I was happy to see that she had! Nicola and the Viscount is about an orphan girl named Nicola who lives in the late 1800s. She is madly in love with a gentleman named Lord Sebastian Bartholomew. When she learns that Lord Sebastian isn't quite who she thought he was, she doesn't know what to do.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love, love, love!
Ofcourse this book has limitations. But when all is said and done, it's fabulous. Entertaining, fun, adorable, all the right amounts of romance, humour, and suspense. This is the kind of light chicklit historical romance that you'd think so many should be able to pull off, but they don't. I LOVE the element of the love interest whom she's known her whole life and is too stupid to see right in front of her and oblivious to the fact that he's falling in love with her. There is nothing particularly surprising about the plot and characters, it's just all done so well that you wonder why others can't replicate, why something so simple that can produce such delight isn't replicated more often. Hilarious, warm, consistently entertaining, this made me smile the whole way through and I absolutely fell in love with Nicola and her..for the purposes of not spoiling the plot, let's just say her man. The point is, this is a great chick-flick-ladies-and viscounts novel, that every single person, whether a teen or not, should enjoy. (And watch out for those lethal brown eyes!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Friends you can count on
Nicola is staying with her best friend Eleanor, in London, when the story is first introduced. We quickly learn that her parents have died at sea when she was younger and left her uncle as her guadrian. Her fathers Baron title and his money went to his brother, but his home Beckwell Abbey was left for his daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eleanor of Aquitaine; So. Cool.
Before reading this book, I wasn't too interested in Eleanor of Aquitaine. I knew who she was, and dimly remembered reading about her somewhere, but nothing made an impression. At that time, I wasn't particularly interested in British or French history. This book completely changed that. I found Eleanor a fascinating woman, and instantly dove into a pile of books to learn more about her and her real life.
5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect introduction to some great figures in history
I read this as a student in the seventh or eighth grade more than a decade ago, so I don't have a detailed enough memory of the book to comment on the quality of the writing. But I do remember that this book introduced me to characters such as Henry II, Eleanor of Acquitaine, and all their sons, and I found it all very interesting.Later in life these people would be brought back to my attention by James Goldman's play "The Lion In Winter" and it was largely my memories of this book that made this play one of my favorites I've ever read. This book is a great way to introduce any young person to some of the most interesting figures in Medeival history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Stylish Eleanor
Written from the viewpoint of four different persons who have shared the life of Eleanor of Acquitane, Konigsburg's book gives the reader an insightful look into the life of this regal lady.I went back and rewatched "The Lion in Winter" after having read this book and enjoyed both the movie and the book even more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
A terrific tale of adventure on a late 1700's ship in the Pacific Ocean, one which is all the more remarkable because it is based on a true story. While I generally find historical fiction to be dull, this book is a page-turner and I couldn't put it down.I highly recommend it as both a thoroughly enjoyable read and an account of a historically significant voyage.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
I've read "Mutiny on the Bounty" more times than I can count since I was a teenager and I've read just about everything I have been able to find about the Bounty since then."Mutiny" is not a history but a romantic novel about the ship and crew.In that regard it paints Bligh as the villain and Christian as the hero. The reality was that Bligh's biggest problem was with his harsh tongue and that Christian's act of mutiny was impulsive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Three thumbs up
