3-0 out of 5 stars Trying too hard?
I wasn't completely put off by Melinda Haynes' 'Mother of Pearl', but neither was I completely satisfied. I have debated with myself if I should award two or three stars, and I decided on three stars, because there are some well developed characters in this strange story. The reader will sometimes get the feeling that the author is trying too hard making this story the story of the century, and I am not sure this book deserves it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging and Refreshingly Different
This review refers to "Mother of Pearl" by Melinda Haynes...
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and beautiful but at times confusing
The plot was interesting and the characters were in-depth and fascinating. The language is very beautiful but at the same time it can make for a difficult read in parts.Overall, I enjoyed the book very much. However, too many questions were left unanswered at the end and that was rather frustrating. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Very dull sequel.
"Sorceress" was very, very disappointing."Witch Child" was interesting, mystifying, and intriguing. This book held none of those qualities, and I just felt obligated to finish it.Author Celia Rees should have just made a sequel to the book, without using Agnes and Alison. Those two characters made the story stop and go, ruining any and all flow. The conclusion of Mary's life was mundane and boring - nothing at all like the rest of her life. What a letdown.I do not recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorceress
This book was good for a sequel because it follows up the amazing characters in Witch Child. I liked it because you actually got to find out what happened to some of the characters because Witch Child sort of left you hanging. And I really wanted to see what happened. I really was sad at some of the parts but I was very pleased with how this turned out.
5-0 out of 5 stars great sequel
Sorceress is a continuation of Witch Child. The reader finally gets to find out what happened to Mary so many years ago.Only, Rees continues the story in such a unique fashion. Her research abilities come into practice again as the Reader gets an insight on the life and habits of Native Americans during the time of the French and Indian War.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romance and the Revolution
Fourteen year old Rachel Marsh lives a horrible home life. Her parents have both died, and she is left to her evil uncle. She finds her escape in becoming an indentured servant in the home of John and Abigail Adams, tending to their children and keeping things in order.
4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review for The Fifth of March
Like A Break with Charity and Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons, The Fifth of March by Ann Rinaldi is a masterpiece of young adult literature. In my opinion, this book is an example of her very best pieces of writing. The Fifth of March takes place in the times leading up to the Boston Massacre, and the problems that come after.Rachel Marsh, a servant to John and Abigail Adams, comes to be friends with the British sentry stationed outside the home, Matthew Kilory. All Rachel wants is to find a place in life; being confused with her choices and worried with upcoming riots.Fiery and passionate, Matthew has a hard time agreeing with Rachel on many events that are affecting their lives, but Rachel trusts and supports him through hardships. When she witnesses the bloody massacre, Rachel learns what she must do to protect Matthew and the other soldiers accused of murder.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anna Rinaldi does it again!!!!!
This is a really, really good book. It's one of the first Ann Rinaldi books I ever read, and I loved it!!! The plot is really good, and the characters are easy to like. You sorta feel Rachel's confusion, pain and joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars I may be biased...but...
I'm not sure if it is entirely fair for me to give a review of this book, since I was one of the illustrators who worked on it BUT my contribution is quite small and I can at least give you an honest assessment of the rest of the project. I have rarely been prouder to be a part of a graphic novel project. I have read all of Ottaviani's GN's about the lives of scientists (including the ones I did not work on) and I find them riveting. I do not agree with the earlier reviewer that there is any offensive material in this book. She makes the volume sound like an adaptaion of "Caligula". The "offensive" shot is a teeny, tiny panel that shows a lady floating through a man's imagination. She is clad in a gauzy garment. The shot is a direct and necessary shot to explain how the scientist came up with a mathematical formula. It is in no way gratuitous. Lord forbid that anyone who thinks this is offensive actually stroll through the ancient Greco-Roman art section of a museum. Their head will explode. I do not recall seeing any strong language at all. I also found the book to be quite amusing. The contributions of the other artists display solid cartooning. The clever stories, especially those about the life of the mischievous Feynmann, are de facto amusing. The guy was a born prankster. Scientists aren't carved out of marble, they make mistakes, get grouchy, think of pretty girls, and play practical jokes. This book is a great way to encourage young people to pursue science as it shows the humanity of them as well as their playful ways of viewing the world. Science isn't all dry study. It's about real people living real lives, and that is why I recommend this book, even if I drew a page of it, so I suppose there's a conflict of interest there. Oh well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gee, I found this book particularly appropriate and helpful
In response to a previous review ("Inappropriate and unhelpful"):
1-0 out of 5 stars Inappropriate and unhelpful
Written in cartoon format, I thought this book would be a lighter approach to a straight, dry, biography of scientists. However, it is written more like a series of political cartoons than cartoons for kids. The cartoons are barely understandable if the biography of the scientist is not already known, so using it as an initial reading is impossible.Further, some content is offensive. On the second page of cartoons, a scientist is walking along a bridge, thinking, when someone mistakenly believes he is getting ready to jump, saying, "No woman is worth committing suicide over."The pictures show a scantily-clad woman (with bare bottom in one frame) that he is now picturing in his mind.Irrelevant and inappropriate!Plus, I didn't have to go far to find swear words in the captions.Yikes! My kids will never see this book!It is not even appropriate for high-school age kids.(In fact, it isn't even funny to adults!) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Profound, disturbing, lurid and haunting....
And much, much more! This really is one of the best historical novels I have ever read. There is no pretense here; just a raw presentation of what life must have really been like for a prostitute during the Victorian era.The depiction of Gustine, the story's heroine, is both tender and gritty. This book is not for the faint of heart. The author is relentlessly vivid in her descriptions of squalor and moral bankruptcy. The ending is ambiguous at best.Every aspect has been scrupulously researched to produce a flawless product that will not disappoint the most discerning reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real find
I saw this book on a new books shelf and was so intrigued that I went and found it in my local library.
2-0 out of 5 stars great in theory; mediocre in reality....
The book started off with such finesse- a great plot, unique and enjoyable writing style, wonderfully complex characters and the promise of topics so rarely written about. Why then did it go downhill??? I still can't understand what happened. I raved about the first one hundred or so pages and couldn't put it down. Somewhere along the way I reached the point where I couldn't even finish the book, save to skim the last chapters. I think the dark subject matter just became too much- cholera morbis, body snatching, class disparities and ignorance...not enough to keep this reader interested or to lead to a positive recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!
Mary "Jacky" Faber is the pefect, high-spirited, spunky heroine that girls today look for in books. And these books are some of the very best I have ever had the good fortune to read. Mr. Meyers seems to understand the very essence of what a girl craves to read about, what she looks for in a novel. This isn't a sappy romance with a feeble plot. It's an adventure on the high seas, a heroine with backbone, and a well-written and carefully devised plot! You've got action, adventure, romance, and a drop of mystery all mixed together to form the third installment in the Bloody Jack series, and one of the very best books on the market! Do yourself a favor and order this book right away, trust me, you will not be disapointed!

Editorial Review

Forced to watch his father escorted out of their lives by Turkishpolice, his brothers shot to death in their backyard, his grandmother murderedby a rock-wielding guard, and his sister take poison rather than be raped bysoldiers, 12-year-old Vahan Kendarian abruptly begins to learn what his fathermeant when he used to say, "This is how steel is made. Steel is made strong byfire." Up until 1915, Vahan has lived a cosseted life as the son of a wealthyand respected Armenian man. But overnight his world is destroyed when thetriumvirate of Turkish leaders, Enver Pasha, Talaat Bey, and Djemal Pasha, begins the systematic massacre of nearly three-quarters of the Armenianpopulation of Turkey, 1.5 million men, women, and children. Soon Vahan is anorphan on the run, surviving by begging, pretending to be deaf and mute, dressing as a girl, hiding out in basements and outhouses, and even living for atime with the Horseshoer of Baskale, a Turkish governor known for nailinghorseshoes to the feet of his Armenian victims. Time and again, the terrifiedand desperate boy grows close to someone--and loses him or her to an appalling, violent death. Through three years of unspeakable horror, Vahan is made strongerby this fire, and by perseverance, fate, or sheer luck, he survives long enoughto escape to the safe haven of Constantinople. 5-0 out of 5 stars Armenian Holocaust
This book is targeted for teens, but as an adult I was gripped from the start by this story of family, war and genocide. It is a super-intense read with lots of painful scenes of violence & death.basically the hero's armenian family is killed-off by the Turks, then he struggles alone as a child to flee the country.I will never forget some of the scenes in the book, including the rape & death of a young girl by Turkish soldiers. You can't read this w/out getting emotional. It presents a gruesome pivcture of the Armenian holocaust, something skimmed over by much o history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Forgotten by others, but never by an Armenian
This was a truly memorable novel to read. In so many aspects I had to stop reading as my stomach turned at the treatment of the Armenians during the genocide from 1915.What a brave character Vahan is and what a trooper in the eyes of his family he would of been.An innocent child should never endure what this fellow did, but many did during this war with the Turks.Vahan's journey to freedom was exhausting to me as a reader. As I read the novel I only wanted good fortune for him during his perils, whether being caught by the Turkish army again after his escape from the death marches, up to the escape from working for Selim Bey and his father (the so called army leaders of the Armenian genocide). His first innocent love, which is lost right in front of his eyes is another heart break. This is a definate must read for all the younger Armenian generations, we need to ensure our young people never forget what we may have lost forever. Our Nation, Our dignity, our arts and culture, our language and our sense of humanity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truely Forgotten Fire
"Who does now remember the Armenians?" was Hitler's argument for the genocide of the Armenian people. After reading Forgotten Fire I will always remember their story. The book is a steady combination of WWII survival novel told by an Armenian boy Vahan Kenderian who sees death and destruction all around him.Vahan the main character starts out in a happy normal home, but when Hitler comes to power the Turks try to take vengeance and start killing Armenian men.Vahan says later on, "Why was I taken to the school instead of to prison or the Inn or the hangman?"(95 Bagdisarian) He is constantly being tailed by the Turks who are exterminating the Armenians just like the Nazis and the Jews. "I stared at him, pointed at my mouth, and shook my head." (156 Bagdisarian) Vahan had to act like he was deaf and mute in order to live safely with a group of Turkish refugees in the desert."I had to escape"(97 Bagdisarian) Vahan had to escape the genocide of his people ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!
I never thought that I was going to read an intense war book with such a good and meaningful ending. "The Last Mission" is a story of a fifteen-year-old boy who lies about his age to get into the airforce during World War Two. He wants to be a hero, but when he is put to the test during the war, he regrets his decision greatly.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Last Mission
In the story, The Last Mission, there are six interesting events. When Jack Raab joins the Army, he is only 15. He had to use his brother's birth certificate to apply, or else he couldn't have got in.. Jack goes through training for the Air Corps doing combat missions in New York. Jack goes on his first mission for the Air Corps doing a bombing mission over Germany. During one of the missions the plane gets shot and crashes over allied territory, then the crew gets taken back to the United States. On another mission the plane gets shot and Jack has to bail out, and he gets caught by Nazis. After he gets caught, he gets sent to a concentration camp. American troops finally find Jack and take him back to the United States. These are six of the many exciting events that take place in this story.

Riva and her brothers have such devotion for each other, I awsome. Trust me it's a great read. It's about how she is put in a ghetto with her family, but loses them before and when she is deported with her remaining 2 brothers who are separated from her too. Thats all I'll tell you. 5-0 out of 5 stars Romancing the Island
Mr. Hamill takes on every bit of New York and discusses why he loves even the worst parts of it. He crafts a walk downtown thru the 1800's past buildings and men who shaped this city and produces a novel that inspires.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start Spreading the News...
This book was much more than I had expected.Thinking that it would be more autobiographical, I was pleasantly suprised to find that it was really the story of New York City, specifically the downtown area of Manhattan. Being a native New Yorker, Hamill gives great insight not only into the historical facts surrounding the city's origin, but also its lore, its people, its music, its drama, and its tradition. This book is so heaped with history, yet it reads so easily like a great love story.Like most New Yorkers, the names and faces of those who came before are soon forgotten, but Hamill brings them back to life again in a very real way.He leaves us with this feeling of connectedness to our past and a senseof longing nostalgia for old New York. However, he reminds us that New Yorkers do not live in the past and that self-pity is a mortal sin.The story of New York is verymuch one of constant difficult change, earned renewal, progressiveness, tolerance and optimism. These traits have been a part of the city since its origins and more important than ever as we see these traits come alive once again after 9/11.This book is a treasure to anyone who loves New York and wants to understand its history and its people without having to sift throughtextbooks that only gives facts. Put your vagabond reading glasses on and be a part of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lyrical and Lucid Glance at New York
Pete Hamill's "Downtown: My Manhattan" is part of the latest spate of books that combine personal New York City experience and New York City history, as do Colson Whitehead's "The Colossus of New York" (in a way) and Phillip Lopate's "Waterfront". However, Hamill's is as different from those two other books as those two books are different from each other. I don't know what is causing these authors to write such material--maybe the nostalgia brought about by the horrors of 9/11--but I'm glad they did.

This story opens in June of 1987 with the then 85-year-old Katy relating her girlhood at the turn of the 20th century.
3-0 out of 5 stars This book was pretty good
I think that The Silent boy was alright. I liked the story and all of the charcters. I didn't like how it was a slow build up though. I think the beginning was kind of boring and could have been better, the ending was good though. I think this book would be good for older teens maybe around 15 or 16. Overall it was a well written book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Why did she have to tell the story THAT way?
I have been a fan of Lois Lowry's books for years, and have appreciated some of the other ways she has handled disability before. That is why I had trouble with how she handled it in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love It!
This is my absolute FAVORITE book of all time! I made all of my friends read it, and they agree that this book is one of the best we've ever read. The plot, drama, romance, adventure, the characters and the general diolouge suit this story's theme so well. Jefferson Davis Bussey is the kind of guy every girl wants to have, and Harold Keith makes him entirely beliveable by giving him emotions, loves and faults. I completely reccomend this book to anyone who loves closing a book with the intention of reading it over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rifles for Watie
Rifles for Watie is a book that i will never forget. It has action and suspense with occasional drama. The book makes you want to keep reading until your done. Even then you want to know what happens next. I could read this book time and time again without thinking that it ever got old or boring. It is truly one of the best books I have ever read!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I remembered -- but ...
I actually went back and re-read "Rifles for Watie" several months ago, more than 40 years after I had first encountered it. (It won the 1958 Newberry Award for children's literature and was a hot item in my elementary school library.) In reading the book as an adult, I was disappointed in the episodic construction of Harold Keith's narrative. He makes some big leaps as he jumps along through the Civil War; in some cases, several months pass between one chapter and the next. This weakens the development of the characters, in particular the youthful focus of the book, Jeff Bussey. At the end of the novel, despite his four years of experience as a combat soldier, spy, and lover, there is little sense that this teenager matures or changes.Even without war, and even sequestered in college, most kids do a fair amount of growing up between ages 18 and 22.At the end of a terrible war, Jeff seems to be as callow and even innocent as he was in his recruit days.

Editorial Review

Did you know that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had an older sister who was another musical genius? Musicologists even speculate that some compositions attributed to Mozart were actually the work of his sister. Nannerl Mozart is just one example of how women and their accomplishments have been ignored or erased entirely from world history. This important book seeks to amend that gaping absence in history books and popular culture by acknowledging the countless women whose contributions have made a difference to modern society. 5-0 out of 5 stars All About Women!
Here's one of the few great books that focus on women and their accomplishments only instead of men. This book featured 120 biographal sketches of women such as Cleopatra VII, Queen Victoria, Anna Pavlova, Gabrielle "Coco" Channel, Harriet Tubmanm, Elizabeth Blackwell, Queen Elizabeth I, and much, much more. These biographies are all wonderful, easy to read, and clearly say what these women have done and accomplished. This is the perfect book for anyone who wants to read about women who have done amazing things. After all, women are capable of accomplishing and doing anything, and this book clearly shows that!

5-0 out of 5 stars A necessity to anyone interested in women's history
What a gem!I have many history books about women because I want to share women's history with my children.I was of the generation where women were left out of the history class and I feel that women are still in large left out of much of the classes in today's schools. This book does a great job of including many women from different eras, genres and ethnicities. There are photos and great summaries that are short enough to interest children, but in-depth enough to give the reader a knowledgeable understanding.I highly recommend this book to anyone, at any level!

5-0 out of 5 stars exellent!
This is the best book! Are you tired or reading about history through the eyes of a man? Before this history was documented by wars and treatys but this book is totally different. You learn about history as well asher-story,I learned about more than a hundred other women who changed themovement of the world. Some created inventions, others opened schools, they fighted for wemens rights and protested their weekness by workingtwice as hard as any man. This was a great book I really injoyed readingit, I hope you do too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars history as cruel as people
a remarkable work israel bernbaum has produced by this book. after having escaped the warsaw ghetto, he fled to the sowiet union and later to paris and in the end went to the usa, he found the courage and the personality to describe the horror and the unbelievable pain in simple words and verystrong pictures. this book, addressed to his children turns out to be anessential for all children anywhere in the world. As a very personal viewat the fate of the tremendous number of jewish people suffering, fightingand dying in the warsaw ghetto, he still ends up without hatred. instead heis pleading for respect against every person regardless of nationality, race, colour or religion. small wonder former president of germany, richardvon weizscker, expressed utmost respect for the book to isarel bernbaum.the book was awarded the german youth book price of the year 1995.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Early Florida Saga
It's easy to see why almost every reviewer gave this book 5 stars. The story follows the MacIvey family from 1863 through three generations to the present. As they scratch out a hardscrabble living, the reader follows their experiences during the Civil War, and through Florida's pioneer days.
