4-0 out of 5 stars All Alone In the Universe
This is a good book. The characters are funny and real, the dialouge is good, the pictures add to the story instead of taking away from it, and it has a way of appealing to how real people think. Yet...it has no plot.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
This is a great book. Some of the other reviews surprise me.For the record it's a children's book - how someone could miss that and then proceed to post a moderate review speaks for itself. All Alone in the Universe tells the story of an all too familiar childhood experience where friendships at times are lost to others.I'm reading it with my 11 year old daughter (it is absolutely a young girl's book) who didn't want to begin reading [yet again] at this time when school is closing for summer vacation. After the first two chapters I can't get her to put it down (late bedtimes, etc.) which is okay by me.The book has captivated my daughter as it would any child on the verge of adolescent self-identity.Remember when you learned people grow, change? All Alone in the Universe is a beautifully written re-telling of a universal life experience which is normal, often faultless but nevertheless painful.Read it with your little girl while she is still little.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Little Gem
While "Criss Cross" is causing all the commotion, "All Alone in the Universe", the debut novel of Perkins, is so much better. The story is about a girl named Debbie just hitting her teen years. With everything that's happening to her, she has a best friend to talk to, right? Not for long. After 140 pages, your heart will be twisted as you watch through Debbie's eyes how her relationship with her best friend ends over one summer. This book is small, but packs a very powerful punch, leaving you to ponder, "What would you do at a time like this?" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Always My Child: A Parent's Guide to Understanding Your Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered or Questioning Son or Daughter
This is an honest and on the mark book for parents about LGBTQ children and teens. It addresses issues important to the LGBTQ son or daughter and gives practical advice to the parent about acceptance and understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for EVERY parent
Kevin Jennings, Executive Director of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network) has co-authored the definitive book on guiding, understanding, and - hopefully - accepting in love your GLBTQ child. It is primarily targeted toward parents struggling to help and deal with their questioning or coming out teenage child.
5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding resource
This amazing guide will help parents navigate the challenges of connecting with a GLBTQ child and becoming an integral and supportive part of that child's life. With chapters on school harassment, drug abuse, and depression, this book also addresses the negative and sometimes self-destructive behaviors of our youth, but gives hope and tools to help heal these wounds. "Always My Child" is especially notable for its chapters on transgender issues and multicultural issues that previous guides didn't include. I was also excited about the chapter on youth questioning their sexuality (straight and gay and in-between), and how parents can be supportive in that as well, because this isn't something many acknowledge. Jennings and Shapiro have created a marvelous resource that will help not only parents, but anyone interested in helping our youth, both queer and nongay, create positive lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Less is More!
I believe that the purpose of this book is to break the bad habbits that every single christian had adoptded and the negative infuences we've been absorving.
1-0 out of 5 stars over-rated
Mr. Hinckley certainly seems like a nice man, but the book is pure fluff. Nothing of substance is said, it contains mostly trivial banalities.

3-0 out of 5 stars Advice across generations
"Way to Be!: Nine Ways to Be Happy and Make Something of Your Life" is by Gordon B. Hinckley and has a foreword by Steve Young. This is basically an advice book directed towards young people. The text is structured around 9 "Be's": Be Grateful, Smart, Involved, Clean, True, Positive, Humble, Still, and Prayerful.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How You Are Changing
My husband and I have read through the book and feel that this is the place to pick up where previous discussions have ended.Having a biblical basis was very important to us and this book does so wonderfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
This has so much info in it, I am afraid it had a little too much for my 11 year old.She became a bit nervous atsome things I thought she would not.I would not let a child read it alone, as suggested, until a parent has read it first and made sure there is nothing too mature for the individual child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
I've been searching for just the right book for my 11 year old son and this is one has just the right look and information I wanted for him. Many other books were way too long, some with pages in the hundreds and other books were too immature for his age. This is a great beginner book for covering all of the facts and terms. An 8 yr. old would need help reading it but an 11 yr. old could read it alone. I think it would be fine even for 12-13 who hasn't learned much about reproduction and puberty. The illustrations are simple but accurate, not like some I've seen that are more like from a medical textbook or cartoonish. There is a glossary with pronunciations and definitions. I like that it is Christian and family based. It's everything I was looking for!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, if you are mainstream...
... but if you are planning an out of hospital birth or a birth with midwives, it's not quite as peachy. There is an illustration of mom at the doctor's office getting checked out early on, a reference in the text to her seeing the doc when baby drops, and then she rushes off to the hospital to push and push in the final pages. No room for birth center or homebirth, the midwifery model of care or self-care.4-0 out of 5 stars Good for toddlers
Our 2 1/2 year old loves it.It's the only good book we've found that demonstrates what's going on during the pregnancy, as opposed to when the child is already old enough to play with the sibling.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book for preparing toddlers
I ordered this book, along with several others, to help prepare my 2-year old daughter for the arrival of her new baby sister. While the illustrations are charming and the text is cute, this book is much better suited for the older child, of the amusement of adults. It simply does not hold my toddler's attention. ... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sadly True
What KIDS did in film, this book does for literature. It's a must read for any one who wants to know what their children just might be up to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A justified middle-finger to American teenagers!
Finally, an exposition of the dark truth of American teenagers. This book definetely showed the horrific state of American teenager's lifestyles without holding back. It's a social necessity: this is an entire GENERATION that will damage America in the future if something isn't done. I can relate: in my school, the teens are HELLBOUND: they curse, drink, have sex, do drugs and God knows what else.

5-0 out of 5 stars A shocking book
Beckerman is completely insane -- and that's a good thing. What he has done is to throw back the curtain to show us the horrible moral decay that has afflicted the children of the Woodstock Generation. The graphic language and sexual content may shock adults, but this is how young people talk and what young people do. Just when you think to yourself, "That's too far-fetched to ever happen," you turn on the TV or pick up a paper and see that it already HAS happened: Teenagers posting self-porn on the 'Net, the Duke gang-rape case, etc. Despite its pornographic content, Generation S.L.U.T. is fundamentally a socially conservative book, and Beckerman's a Robert Bork for the MTV era. Marty shows us the emotional and physical wreckage wrought by the serial betrayals of the "hook-up" age among kids with too much privilege and not enough supervision. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All parents should read this book
This was an extremely informative and enlightening book. I bought a copy formy teenage daughter, my teenage son as well as my niece. This book dispells all myths about pregnancy and offers very valuable guidelines on what to do if you find yourself pregnant.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good...
If you're a teenager who wants to get pregnant, want to learn more about teens who get pregnant(my reasoning), or have already gotten pregnant, you should read this book.5-0 out of 5 stars This book really helped me!
A year ago, I found out I was pregnant.I was scared stiff.I was only 15 and I didn't have any time or patience to be a mother.I didn't believe in abortion, my parents didn't want me to give it up, and I didn't want tokeep it.I was very confused and I felt like I was alone. Then I readthis book.It really made a difference in my life!I read what othergirls did about their pregnancies and how they felt about their choices. Thanks to this amazing book, I decided to give birth to a beautiful babygirl, and now I know that my daughter Carisse is living with a very nicecouple. She's the baby they always wanted, and none of this would'vehappened if I had never read "Dear Diary, I'm Pregnant-Teenagers TalkAbout Their Pregnancies".Thanks to a great book! ... Editorial Review

When we first meet 19-year-old Samantha, she sounds like a normalteenager, writing in her diary about an ex-boyfriend: "I will never fall in love again, never, ever! Why is life so cruel? Why do people like to hurt each other?" But a mere three months later--after moving into her own apartment, taking a job as a topless dancer, and becoming addicted to heroin--her tone takes on that of a grizzled drug abuser: "I've been shooting in my bony hip area... toward my groin, so no one can detect the needle points on my rear when I wear my G-string, and I'm getting terribly numb there." Samantha's story is told entirely in the form of her journal entries, which vividly reflect this young woman's rapid descent into the seedy world of addiction. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for my curious 4-yr-old!!
My 4-yr-old learned that boys and girls have different body parts a few months back and with his discovery came a slew of questions that became increasingly more difficult for me to answer. This book helped SO much.It talks about the reproductive organs of boys and girls in a very simple, direct manner and also has simple illustrations for kids to better understand.

"I fell for the great American dream, female version, hook, line, and sinker," Marya Hornbacher writes. "I, as many young women do, honest-to-God believed that once I Just Lost a Few Pounds, suddenly I would be a New You, I would have Ken-doll men chasing my thin legs down with bouquets of flowers on the street, I would become rich and famous and glamorous and lose my freckles and become blond and five foot ten." Hornbacher describes in shocking detail her lifelong quest to starve herself to death, to force her short, athletic body to fade away. She remembers telling a friend, at age 4, that she was on a diet. Her bizarre tale includes not only the usual puking andstarving, but also being confined to mental hospitals and growing fur (a phenomenon called lanugo, which nature imposes to keep a body from freezing to death during periods of famine). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
I never truly left this book until it was done. I stopped at points and it took perhaps a week to finish, but it was always on my mind. I rolled over her story in my head as I went about my days (or daze).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, witty and very honest book
I've read a few lame teenage oriented, moralistic, politically correct books about eating disorders, but THIS is something completely different! Not only because Marya is a real, tallented writer, but even more because her writing is so honest, detailed and yet humorous in some strange way. She doesn't whin about her situation, she doesn't blame all the world and society, but she neither powders herself with ashes. She just tells her story, a story of a very seriuos, determined, tallented and unique girl who decided to become really thin and pushed her dieting obsession to its very limits, to the very edge of death. Details of her starving and purging practices, and of her inventive, deceiving methods to convince her family, friends and medical personel that she's fine, are scary, but this brutal realism makes you really think about eating disorders. Her eating disorder is not just a disorder, it's a real full-time job, a lifestyle, a dedication, and it's extremly frightening. I found her comments about her recent life very good and revealing too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
Marya Hornbacher paints a real and vivid image of her experience with anorexia. This is the best book on anorexia and bulimia I have ever read. I keep coming back to this book- I could read it again and again just because of Hornbachers talent for writing. She truely has a gift!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Class
From my perspective as a sexuality educator and sex therapist, I highly recommend The Naked Truth About Sex.It is an ideal book for parents, young people, and anyone who works with young people.Dr. Libby's book is sex positive, straight forward, factual, and accurate. This is the best book that I have read on this topic.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Teens and Twentysomethings
The Naked Truth About Sex serves as a handbook for teens to guide them to make intelligent sexual decisions. Through his book, Dr. Libby relates to teens on a different level. He doesn't use the "abstinence only method/ 'just say no' approach" that teens are used to and tired of hearing and offers safe sexual choices in an honest and sincere tone that allows the reader to trust his advise.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Book for Teens
Before reading this book, I was already in a serious 3-year relationship from which learned a lot both beneficial and painful. While reading Dr. Libby's book, I realized that I had tried to have a serious romance (which included a sexual relationship) at too young an age. (I was 15 years old). I will never forget the experience of my first love, but I wish I hadn't been so young and naive.

Editorial Review

The authors of this essential new guide maintain that lesbian and gay adolescents "rarely receive health education and counseling in a way that is relevant to them." Health and emotional risks to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered youth are heightened by prejudice and the chance of antigay violence, as well as by the need for secrecy. In fact, the problems of disclosure may be the greatest impediment to appropriate health care for gay minors, who (often rightly) fear that their parents will be informed of their sexuality or their medical conditions. Health care providers have been working without clinical care guidelines for gay youth, let alone a single resource that brings together protocols for assessment, treatment, and psychosocial care. 2-0 out of 5 stars The exercises from the book reprinted
Teens Can Make It Happen is a really good book and well worth the money. However, this companion workbook, besides some chapter summaries, basically has all the fill-in exercises from the book reprinted. I can only think of two or three new activities. I was hoping this workbook would expand on what was in the book instead of just reprinting a chunk of it. Since the workbook costs the same as the original book, you might as well just buy a copy of the original book and write in there! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a teen, freak, or outlaw - just suicidal?
Actually, I've met very few people in my life that didn't at least at times fall into the freak or outlaw catagories... but I wouldn't want you to get the idea that you have to be outrageous or extraspectacular or political in your freakiness to be able to benefit from this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kate serves it up down home style
I don't know if it's boorish to predicate a review with my own trans status, but hey, I am if it matters. Seriously, I love Kate Bornstein because she tells us exactly what we need to hear - we are human, we suffer, we do not deserve to be punished (unless that's what we want). I use all Kate's books not just for myself, but to point other people in my life toward as a gender primer and affirmation. She's an easy, interesting and heartfelt author who shares the secrets so many of us are too afraid to admit are our own. This is an essential reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kate ROCKS!
I found myself reading this book the way I savor fine wine.I literally read it in 10 page incriments, partly because I wanted to make sure that I was fully digesting the contents and because I never wanted to reach the book's end.Kate is a mind-blowing, earth-shattering activist who continues to inspire me.I picked up this book at a time in my life when I wasn't feeling low or depressed, but 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens Freaks and Other Outlaws provided me with such a life affirming experience, that words don't even begin to do justice to it's impact.Know that I will be recommending this book to anyone who will listen! ...
