Really nice book for teenagers (and their parents)
If you liked this book, also try "The Healing Journey" series of self help journals by Phil Rich. Like all best friends, George and Martha do everything together--go to the movies, play at the beach, and just hang around not doing much of anything. No matter that they happen to be gigantic hippopotami, they learn the same lessons humans do about the ups and downs of true friendship. George and Martha teach each other (and adoring readers) that even in a close friendship, privacy is important, practical jokes can sometimes backfire, and among other things, pouring split pea soup into your loafers to spare the chef's feelings is not the best laid plan.Read more

hysterical, cute and witty collection of stories about two best friends...
This pair of large, friendly, well-dressed hippopotemi is a throwback to some of the happiest days of my childhood.Though, these stories are short and to-the-point, they actually carry powerful and compelling messages about friendship and life.This is evident in how these two large creatures treat and interact with one another.Not only are the pictures hysterical, the stories last with you for a lifetime.I am thinking, in particular, about "Split Pea Soup," the story about Martha and her obsession with preparing soup that George just doesn't want to eat anymore.I am sure this is a dilemma that people, young and old, can relate to!I am so glad that they put this collection together, with a forward by Maurice Sendak.I reccomend this to readers, young and old.

A Book That Has Helped Me Through A Lot
This book has made a world of difference to me. It has a lists of almost everything teenagers, boys and girls, might be confused about in life. There are reasons not to do drugs and drink, ways to not be stressed out, ways to be safe and so much more. Great Book
This is a really good book, I'm 12 and I got this book when I was about 10. Still, whenever I'm feeling down or a little upset I always enjoy curling up in bed and reading Real Beauty. It really does make you feel better about yourself. I think It is a very good book for pre-teens and teens.

A Must Buy
This is one of the best books I have come across to help children, parents, teachers and friends understand the ADHD girl.I raised a son with ADHD and it was totally different than helping raise a granddaughter with ADHD.I am buying copies for my granddaughter, her mom, her LD teacher at school, and her teacher this year.

Great book for teens
This is a great book for helping teens cope with the loss of a loved one, whether it was a close friend or family member. The book is written with short, easy to read sentences and paragraphs. The chapters are organized in useful topics like 'suicide', 'loss of a friend', 'long term illness' ... so the reader can locate those areas that pertain to their own situation. Having lost my own mother when I was just 16 (20 years ago) I have bought 3 copies of this book already - I give them out to teens who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Excellent Book For Any Child's Library
I read this book through, and imagined reading it to my children when I finally have some and found it to be a wonderful read. Very well written. All children should have this book read to them whether they come from two mothers, two fathers, a mother & a father or a single parent home.

Jean-Claude Van Damme uttered the immortal line: "I didn't make the world; I just live in it" (Cyborg, c. 1989).On one level, this book is useful for those kids thrust into non-traditional family situations like those in HHTM.You could do worse than have the facts of your own familial structure explained to you by a kiddie book as opposed to the schoolyard bully, d'accord?
Creates more questions than it answers
The book's appearance and story line are both lighthearted and gentle with the underlying message that acceptance is the highest of all virtues. This approach will probably work for a typical 5 year old child in a Lesbian led household - especially a girl child. If the child is a boy and/or approachng 8 or 9 years old, the hard questions start coming and this book pretends these questions will never be asked.

Pitiful.
Teens are questing more than ever before.They NEED something that will help them find the Path meant for the.What have they got out there?Several books geared towards them, some good, some REALLY bad and others so bad they simply take advantage.This is one such kit.It takes advantage.One reviewer commented that the crystal in the kit is worth $50.Ehrm.I've been on this path more than 23 years and have never seen a crystal of that size and quality for $50.50 cents, maybe, but dollars?Nope.The items inside the kit are cheap, certainly meant to be starters for those just starting off on their path but this kit is a sad "starting point".

I read some reviews about how hokie this item was, and I would agree if I had bought it for myself.However, I purchased the item for my son.It's a good start and made my son feel more involved.It's envoked him to learn more.I'm happy to say, if your teen is just starting out, this is a good kit to start with, but if your teen is well intergrated pass this up.

Dealing with Teens? Get this!
This book is a must-have for any Library shelf that serves teens.It is written in a style appealing to teens and includes short, one or two page summaries of ways to cope with the many issues teens face when questioning their sexuality.It also provides excellent, current resources for teens, from crisis lines to 'safe' (moderated) chat sites. I especially enjoyed the section dealing with 'coming out' to parents and family.It provided experiences from other teens who have (the good, the bad, and the ugly), and also possible responses parents might have when a teen tells them he/she is gay.In addition, it listed possible, respectful ways to respond to less-than-accepting parents.A fantastic compilation of stories, insights, and resources for teens.

Excellent - one of the best!
Great book, I've read a lot of books on this topic and especially ones targeted towards young adults.This is another book that I highly recommend because:it's easy to read, it practically speaks to you and you can finish it within afew hours, it's style is appealling to teenagers and young adults.
I wish I had had access to this book
This is a book which is going to help so many people deal with issues and put them to one side before reaching adult hood and meeting a partner. I believe it is a soul saver
The best book outthere!
I am a therapist with a private clinical practice, working primarily with adolescents and women of all ages who are survivors of some form of trauma, including sexual abuse and incest. I have to say, that this is the book I use most, with all ages, including women who are uncovering and dealing with painful abuse memories. Over and over I hear clients proclaim that the book and quotes from other survivors help them not feel so alone and to also understand better what happened to them and to know there is hope. Also, the way in which the author discloses her own incest history and recovery is refreshing and hopeful and establishes a climate of credibility and trust.In my 20 years of clinical practice and training, I have aquired and read $1000's of dollars worth of trauma books and materials and this book sits as one of the top and most frequently used resources. Also, there is a children's book called "BRAVE BART" which has been a wonderful resource for adult survivors as well as children and adolescent survivors.

Great Gift For Girls
I read this book while researching teen abuse and was very impressed. It gets all of those sensitive topics that adults and teens would rather ignore (not just sex, but abuse, eating disorders and difficulties in relationships and friendships) out in the open. The book teaches girls how to make good decisions for themselves while remaining open and communicating with friends and family. The theme is respect through empowerment and is targeted at an age group and gender that often (sadly) feel they have no power.
A resources for parents, teachers, and mentors to read with young females
I picked up Respect with a critical eye, fully prepared to read some fluffy, new-age, condescendingly grrrl-empowering text.Trust me, none of those adjectives fit this terrific resource.Authors Macavinta and Vander Pluym provide talking points for discussion and personal introspection on topics ranging from friends to family to the opposite sex to body image and self-image.The book is not a guide about what to think or do, but a template for drafting one's own guidelines and ethos.The authors continually recommend that young readers keep a journal and use specific topics and questions as launching points for making entries in the jounral.
Excellent Working Template for OPEN dialog
I have two girls, and we went through chapaters that were relevent to us, right now, and used many of the suggestions. One of the things I love about the book is it promotes open dialog between parents, but also sisters and friends. I have seen it work in action, and my daughters made up their own 'sisterhood' contract which we posted on the refrigerator, and refer too, often. The chapters you can review first if there are subjects that are sensitive to you, however, I found the 'sex' chapter very well written and received by both girls. Our next step is to have a 'sisterhood sleepover' where the girls invite their friends, and we have some open discussions on self respect and respect of others. To allteenagers out there: If you want to become a successful adult, go & read this book!
I simply love to read books that offer success short-cuts &/or survival skills to teenagers & young adults. This is partly attributed to my strategy work with teenagers.
A MUST for every teen!
I use this book as my text for my high school Teen Living classes.It says it like it is with very solid logic and reasoning.It covers just about every topic affecting teens today from money to sex.It says what most parents want to say, but coming from a bookmakes it more digestible for the average teen.
