Editorial Review

According to authors John C. Friel and Linda D. Friel, all that isconfused and painful about being a teenager today is captured in the "struggleto join grace and power." Through stories, examples, and carefully researchedtherapeutic techniques and theories, the authors write convincingly of teens'ability to succeed in today's world. They offer seven tips for young people--andthose who care for them or work with them--to ponder and learn from: becomecompetent, master your feelings, break the silence, get healthy power, face theserious stuff, find an identity, stake out the extremes. 3-0 out of 5 stars for parenting of your teen
This is definitely a book for parents although the title would imply it is for teens. There were several important points I found relevant to our family.Overall the ready was a little dry.I would recommend this book however, because the points we took to heart have deep implications for our teenager. Thanks

2-0 out of 5 stars First review
I often read reviews of books that I am considering for purchase.I read "A Brother's Journey" and found it to be a better read, that kept my interest and that had some good writing. With this book, "A Teenager's Journey" I was somewhat disappointed.Since I depend so often on others reviews of books, I am beginning to think that I need to take the time to review what I have purchased.Again, I sympathize with both Richard and David, but this book did not make me feel strong emotions that made me want to turn page after page to see what would happen next.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lousy rush job.
I wrote an Amazon review of "A Brother's Journey" in which I called the book emotionally accurate and even a "shining achievement". It was.

4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful for my daughter
This book was very helpful for my daughter with selective mutism. She realized for the first time that she was not the only kid with this problem. When we received it she read it every night and started to talk about how she felt.We shared this book with her teacher and her best friend, they too had no idea that this was how she felt.My daughter is 8 years old and this book was maybe a bit on the young side for her.It would be great for younger children with selective mutism and for those who need to understand how they feel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for parents, teachers and child
I have found all of Dr. Shipon-Blum's materials to be very helpful in the treatment of SM. It is hard sometimes to explain this condition to others in the family, school, etc....this book gives a basic story of a little girl with SM, how she feels, how she acts and how her parents and teachers work to help her. My SM 6-yr-old and his sisters enjoy reading this story, too, and although he does not experience all of the same symptoms, he does relate to Katie, which I think has been helpful. It is a good springboard for discussion with your child. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Teen Survival Guide indeed!
Vicki Courtney discusses real concerns of real teen girls frankly, truthfully and honestly without sounding preachy. I especially liked the chapter on eating disorders and fashion and the assurances that what's depicted as trendy in the fashion magazines is far from reality. She lets girls know that it IS okay to be normal....with a far more accurate portrait of what "normal" really is in today's world where girls are constantly bombarded with messages to be sexy and thin instead of simply enjoying their youth. An excellent resource for Christian parents and their girls, and for anyone else with a daughter. This is a great book for moms and daughters to read together, and would make a great gift tweens and teens. Highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Looks like a magazine; offers great advice
Looks like the best of teen magazines but carries real-world advice with a Christian perspective.I really liked this book!It had good, but not judgemental advice on everything from clothes, pierced belly buttons, tatoos and friends to boyfriends, sex and beauty. It doesn't go into explicit details... but it offers solid advice for teen girls growing up in tough times.I think maybe the best section is quotes from teen guys talking about what they wished teen girls knew!I plan to give this magazine/book as a gift. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars There is nothing underground about this book at all.
Basso's book is intended for younger teenagers, but it promotes abstinence, and is not reality based at all. As a high school teacher, he has to be conservative in this society, but today's teenagers will not accept his message, nor should they. The book is really sex-negative, and as such, it is not very relevant to today's teenagers, especially those 15-19.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
Michael Basso does a masterful job of taking a sensitive topic and breaking it down into laymans terms for broad understanding. He uses science, reality, ethical values, and an obvious profound knowledge of what teens are looking for, what they need, and how best to communicate these messages and lessons.
5-0 out of 5 stars Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality
A useful guide about contraceptives, barrier methods, waiting/abstinence, and general questions surrounding sexuality. This book presents itself from a teenage perspective and can be useful to reacing out to this demographic, especially when it comes to explaining things that parents find it difficult to talk about. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!!
I've used this book with both elementary and middle school students for years and it's a great tool for getting through to kids with anger problems. It has spaces for students to record their own responses and they like being able to do that.I've also noticed that students who normally "wouldn't be caught dead" reading a book seem to enjoy this book. The author uses humor throughout the book in an apparent to win over those kids.It works!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very, very helpful
My daughter (age 11) had been having some severe difficulties with anger so I decided to buy this book.Wow!She has made huge progress after we read this book by Jerry Wilde. It's filled with great insights and exercises we completed together.I can't say enough nice things about this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book
this book is totally innappropriate for elementarychildren. It seems to only address anger issues, not stress issues. Not every child gets angry when they are stressed. Some are sad, nervous, or scared.A waste of my money. It is a workbook for a middle school or high school student to do on their own. ... I wish I had this book when my oldest was about to become a big brother. He was 4 when his brother was born, and even though he understood everything, it would have been nice to have a book for him to read. Him being such a great reader, he would have loved it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best preparing for baby book for AP parent
I looked at quite a few "new baby" books before selecting this one. As another reviewer said, there are a few pages addressing the physical changes mommy will be going through during the pregnancy. I agree that these could have been minimized.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!
A Quiet Place is a wonderful book to help kids realize that it is good for them to be quiet and think. With all the noise they experience during the day and their constant activities (including music, television, computers, electronic toys, etc.), it is so important for them to be able to think in quiet and daydream. This book gives wonderful examples of the different places a boy goes in his thoughts, and it shows him imagining himself to be different people or animals. For example, when walking on the beach he becomes an explorer discovering a lost continent, when laying in the snow he's a sleeping polar bear, when climbing a hill he becomes a mountain climber on top of the world, when visiting a museum he's an artist admiring his own masterpiece. It is extremely well written and captivating, and the illustrations are beautiful.I came upon this book at the library and am now on-line to order it for my 6 and 4 year old boys (who loved it).

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely and Moving
This story beautifully balances a child's inner self-esteem with a wonderful sense of adventure. The young boy in the book looks for "a quiet place" to escape from the intesity of the outside world. My son and I have read it every night for the last week, just before bed.Wonderful writing, truly breathtaking illustrations. The author's earlier work, GRANDAD'S PRAYER'S OF THE EARTH, is one of our favorites. ... As a child, I unfortunately encountered problems with addiction in my family. I was given this book by a ffriend of my mother's. Together, my mom and I would read it, and it ultimately helped me cope with understanding "daddy's problem." I believe this is an excellent choice for children who are seeing the effects of addiction in their families. It is also a very informative books for those fortunate children who do not have to deal with addiction. It was definitely a huge help for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome book!
The Sister Hood of the Traveling Pants is an awesome book.It talks about the trials and tribulations about four teenage girls who have to be separated for the summer. It may not seem like a big deal but it is to them because they have been friends their whole lives.Their moms met in a yoga class when they were pregnant. All of the girls end up in different places of the world: Lena ends up in Greece, Carmen leaves for her dad's house, Bridgett travels to Baja Mexico for a soccer camp, and Tibby stays at home. Before they are about to separate, they find this pair of pants that Carmen got at the thrift store. It fits them all perfectly, as if by magic. So, they make up the sisterhood and make up all of the rules. They record all of their adventures of the pants at the end of the summer and share them with each other. Its' a great story and I would encourage anybody to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I have been reviewing books for girls who are in their preteen years. The interactive book I like best is "Girls: What's so Bad about being Good?" (Authors: Harriet Mosatche and 12 year-old daughter Liz Lawner). The format is teen friendly and inviting.A wide range of topics will captivate young readers. The book is written in a format that will guide and encourage young women to make positive choices. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book has everything I was looking for. The best part was that the information was down to earth, stuff I can actually use in my life. When I had my copy at camp, all the other girls kept grabbing it so they could read it too!

I am a young Wiccan, and I am always looking for books oriented towards teens and solitaty Wiccans. Last Christmas I asked my mother for this book thinking that it was the answer to my search for an author who wanted to help teen Wiccans. I do not like to put anyone down, but I must say that this book is disappointing. Silver Ravenwolf seems to be one of those people who think they understand, but really don't. For those just beginning to learn about Wicca it provides useful info. on Sabbats and basic Wiccan beliefs, but the book is more of a lecture than anything else. While Silver Ravenwolf has obviously good intentions, the book's primary focus is to hassle tennagers about not doing drugs and drinking and other risk behaviors. I completely support these ideas, but it has little to do with the subject matter. I read this book from cover to cover and it took me a long time for it to sink in so that I could make judgements on it. Once it did sink in though, I felt like a small child who was manipulated into forgetting about what they really wanted to do and being sent away with a pat on the head and a toy to occupy them. Another problem I have with Silver Ravenwolf is that she hands you a long list of her own personal spells(and her children's) rather than encouraging you to write your own. She seems more intent on bringing you into her specific sect of the Craft than allowing you to find your own individual path, and discovering your own beliefs is vitally important. Some practiced Wiccans would refer to this as "fluff" Wicca. The thing with Silver Ravenwolf is that you either really like her or really don't. I am among the many who don't. You should make your own judgements, but if you are seriously interested in Wicca, Paganism, and/or other Earth religions I suggest you read as many books as you can by Scott Cunningham and Raymond Buckland. Anyone will tell you that these two authors are the absolute best on the subject.
2-0 out of 5 stars Skip This One
Usually I love books by Silver RavenWolf, but I have mixed feelings about this one. Sure, Silver has some good information in here, but some of it is quite laughable with her overexaggerated facts and ridiculous spell names.
2-0 out of 5 stars What the Hell?
This book should not be given to any teenager. She does have some good info, and a good writing style for teens, but she includes nothing about how and why the ethics work.... Where natural law comes in... And on top of that! She includs spells for manipulation. "The Call Me Spell".... Yes some of it is good. I think this book should be used as a guide for teens being asked "What is wrong with this and how could we fix it?" ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing
This book did absolutly nothing for me. Just a boring thing to write in, which I haven't.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Chicken Soup Warmed my Soul
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul: Journal, was one of the most moving books I have read.It is directed towards adolescents, and deals with issues every adolescent girl faces. It's a blend of stories, quotes, poems, and spaces to write your thoughts. This book has many different sections such as: family, learning lessons, love and kindness, and tough stuff. My favorite section, however, is "loving yourself".This book gave me a chance to deal with issues and see that I am not the only girl whom faces such issues.Chicken Soup is a book that I am able to pick up and at any time if I need some inspiration, help, or reassurance.Other issues helpful to me were on drinking, self-esteem, eating disorders, and how to deal with my past.Another good part about this book is that a lot of it is compiled with texts written by teenage authors. There are spaces for friends to write about you, and spaces for you to express how you feel on certain issues.Chicken Soup allowed me to realize I was not the only girl who had experienced some of the feelings I did. After reading this book I knew I wasn't alone!I do highly recommend this book to any teenage girl.Adolescence is a hard time to get through, and many girls need inspiration. You do not have to read the book cover to cover; you can pick it up any time and read whatever section you desire.
