5-0 out of 5 stars Let Your Spirit Soar
THE REAL DEAL: A SPIRITUAL GUIDE FOR BLACK TEEN GIRLS by Billie Montgomery Cook is a book that advises teen girls how to overcome any and every obstacle that comes their way. In a society where how you look determines who you are, it is essential for impressionable black teen girls to know that their appearance should not validate who they are. Important topics covered consist of: body image, self-respect, sex and friendship which allows girls to see how a young Christian woman should handle these situations. Girls learn how to indulge in self-love, self-respect and self-worth. Each chapter is told in a way that's easy for teens to understand and at the end of each chapter is a prayer, a section which asks questions that require the reader to do a little soul-searching and a section for the reader to write their own prayer.
5-0 out of 5 stars You must read this!
This book is simply an essential tool in guiding you or your teen to a stronger level of self-respect, self-love, and a true relationship with Christ.I highly recommend it as a tool to engage in dialogue at home as well as at church or school. It easily bridges the gap between any age group, and proves that parents can, indeed, understand!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource!
My daughter recieved this book as a gift for her 13th birthday. It was perfect timing! We needed to be talking about these issues, but I was not sure how to bring them up in a constructive way.I would read a chapter during the day and my daughter would read it when she got home from school, then after dinner we would talk about the contents of that chapter...it really opened up alot of positive communication. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Book For All Ages
I purchased this book as a gift for my teenage niece and found myself at first leafing through it and then later reading the entire book! This is truly an inspirational book for all who read it.Though it's directed at the teen sector, I found affirmations that still ring true for adults. We do still need to be told that our self-worth is not dependent on others assessments of ourselves. This book is perfect for teens because it speaks to them on their level--it doesn't try to preach a philosophy that may still be foreign to some teens.Ms. Evans gets to the heart of teens...and adults.Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Graduating Girlhood
Graduating Girlhood is a must-have for anyone who has a pre-teen or teenage daughter.I am so thankful to the author for offering a book that is full of information that Mothers and Fathers appreciate, written in a language that really speaks to teen girls. The book is motivational and inspires girls to take charge of their lives and consciously create the future they want.It encourages self exploration and teaches life skills that are invaluable.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Dr., Bad book
I had Ms. Ponton as my therapist when I was 16 (I'm 22 now). She told my mother confidential information about my emotions that led to a lot of fighting and problems in my family. I also found her to be self absorbed and not connected to what people my age were feeling.
2-0 out of 5 stars Focusing on the Negative
What is it these days with authors, and society in general associating teens having sex with pregnancy, STD's and harrasment. Teenagers these days aren't as naive as you think! I know I remember everything essential in those Health classes and what my parents taught me. After learning that every action has a consequence, they should also tell you that it is an enjoyable experience! No wonder half the girls out there are freaked out of their mind when the three letter word is brought up in any conversation!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Guide to Adolescent Sexuality
After reading the New York Times January 15th article on Dr. Ponton, I decided to read The Sex Lives of Teenagers: Revealing the Secret World of Adolescent Boys and Girls. I found it to be sensitive, even-handed, and clear. The stories themselves are frank, which may make some readers uncomfortable. However, I felt that this was an honest portrayal of adolescent sexuality, ranging the spectrum of `typical' to extreme. At times touching, at times chilling, and always elucidating, I am very thankful, as a parent, to have discovered Dr. Ponton's work. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING BOOOOOK!!!!
This first semester I've been reading the Chicken Soup books during SSR time. One I enjoyed reading the most was the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul IV, a nonfiction book. There are a few authors who submit their stories and they are all true. The authors who put the book together though are Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Kimberley Kirberger, and Mitch Claspy. The book is full of true stories different people go through and deal with. They're either about friendship, making a difference, relationships, lessons and learning, family, tough stuff, overcoming obstacles, and growing up. My favorites are the ones about friendships and relationships. The main themes of what I read were friendship, love, and taking things for granted. Those are things everyone does at one point in there life.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book for teens, but why such a long wait from the third one?
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul books are usually inspirational.Teenagers can relate to their stories in ways unimaginable. It's a great book for teens to read so that they know that they're normal. It was why I read them when I was younger and why some stories still hold true today.
4-0 out of 5 stars No matter what, you'll find a story that touches your heart
This book contains a bunch of short stories about teenagers lives. It's both inspirational and creative. It really feels personal, because it's written by people like you!

5-0 out of 5 stars The cover's neat too
I read this book when I was in the sixth grade. While I read it for fun, it was also useful later in the year for school. Being an avid disease book reader, this is one of the best. Itcould have gone in to a tiny bit more detail on the the symptoms, but then again some people can't handle that much anyway.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Learning Book
As a 7th grader this book really helped understand a little more about the black death, small pox and AIDS. It doesnt go into much detail, but gives you a general feel.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is not appropriate for an elementary school
The publisher says that this book is appropriate for grade 6-12. I disagree. While I feel the book is well written and informative - I strongly suggest that educators think twice before putting the book in an elementary school library.Read more

Editorial Review

Forced to leave her sunny Caribbean home for the bleak Connecticut Colony, Kit Tyler is filled with trepidation. As they sail up the river to Kit's new home, the teasing and moodiness of a young sailor named Nat doesn't help. Still, her unsinkable spirit soon bobs back up. What this spirited teenager doesn't count on, however, is how her aunt and uncle's stern Puritan community will view her. In the colonies of 1687, a girl who swims, wears silk and satin gowns, and talks back to her elders is not only headstrong, she is in grave danger of being regarded as a witch. When Kit befriends an old Quaker woman known as the Witch of Blackbird Pond, it is more than the ascetics can take: soon Kit is defending her life. Who can she count on as she confronts these angry and suspicious townspeople? Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A bewitching story
This is one of my favorite books. I first read this book while in middle school and have re-read it so many times that I can recite some of the passages! The story of the girl who leaves her island home and must adjust to the harsh New England environment struck a chord with me, as I was a military kid and always moving from place to place. This story is about a girl who finds herself in a new environment that goes against everything she has ever learned or experienced, and she must learn who she is in order to survive this new land. It's also a romance story, and an intriguing story that shows what can happen when people become so closed-minded about what is "right" and "proper" that they refuse to look past a person's supposed subversive actions in order to really see or understand that person.Highly recommended reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cleverly managed
"The Book of Wizardry" is a wonderfully creative guide for those of us in the world with a particular interest in magic. At first, Mr. Rumstuckle explains to us the basics of wizardry and how we could possibly use it in the future.Eventually, he does teach us different ways to use magic in our lives. Then, he teaches us how to make our own wand, our own cape, and all those other necessities of wizards, except for the pointed hat, which he describes as being only used by those who wish to show off. Next, he gets into horoscopes and sun signs and things like that, which I particularly enjoy.Yet, when he gets into REAL magic, he explains that it works from the inside out which was a bit disappointing, considering that he states that to make something happen physically, we have to visualize it mentally, basically saying that magic is just in the state of mind. This process DOES work but it's not really what one would expect from a wizardry guide.Even though there are those not-so-greataspects of the book, the splendid humor draws you into it a bit more, even though it's not really a page-turner that you can never put down. It's easy to stop reading at the end of the day and store it on your bookshelf without feeling hungry for more or the least bit guilty.I still would recommend this book to anyone who's fascinated by the ancient art of magic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not really supprising considering the source
Cornelius Rumstuckle aka J. H. (Herbie) Brennan. co writer of the such gaming books as Sagas of the Demonspawn Aztec Quest, Egyptian Quest, Greek Quest, Roman Quest and Grailquest, amoungst others. So it is no supprise that his current book has such game book as part II, He has written some on occult topics such as An occult history of the world and Magick for Beginners: The Power to Change Your World. But then is anyone realy supprised that such a book is coming from Llewellyn. He has three books currently in print with Llewellyn, they are Magick for Beginners: The Power to Change Your World, Magical I Ching, Time Travel: A New Perspective.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a pretty good book
I admit that this doesn't have much to do with Wicca or magic, but it shares some principles or ideas. It has things about visualization, for example, and it's very interesting. I would definetly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True Love Waits
I give "True Love Waits" presentations around the country and SexSmart, by Susan Browning Pogany is the sole book I recommend to all teenagers and parents. It is the most accurate and readable abstinence resource I have ever encountered. IF I WERE MADE OF MONEY, THIS BOOK WOULD BE IN THE HANDS OF EVERY TEENAGER IN AMERICA!!Please get it for those you love.5-0 out of 5 stars The book I thought I'd have to write myself
Susan Browning Pogany has written a book I really thought about writing myself. As the mother of a 13 year old daughter, I've stayed up late into the night thinking of all the things I will need to tell my daughter, and should probably write out. How boys think of sex differently than girls. How teens are being manipulated by the media through a bombardment of sexual images via magazines, movies, television, the internet and music - for no other reason than to draw them in as consumers. How teens can fall prey to peer pressure when they loose track of what is important to them. These are only a few of the points Susan Browning Pogany offers for teens to consider in "SexSmart".5-0 out of 5 stars Sex Smart
