5-0 out of 5 stars The dramatic, first-person narrative story of Dale Aldrich
The Belly Gunner is the dramatic, first-person narrative story of Dale Aldrich, an American GI who served in World War II, and who told of his life to author Carol Edgemon Hipperson. Eyewitness experiences, gripping and deadly battles, black-and-white photographs and an era that changed the world forever are all presented in vivid detail, in this straightforward account especially suitable for readers age 12 through 17, and is highly recommended for school and community library collections.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Pigman and MeBy Paul Zindel
The Pigman and Me is an autobiography of the life of Paul Zindel. This book consists of the many experiences of his teenage years living in Travis, Staten Island, New York. My personal favorite part of this book is the relationship between Paul and his Pigman, Nonno Frankie. Paul ends up learning a countless number of things from Nonno Frankie including the secret to life. I usually don't like to read non-fiction books, but this was really amazing. The truth in this book is much more interesting than what you would find in a fiction book because you know that it's true. Although Paul experiences many difficulties fitting in in his new school and neighborhood, he gains so much making new friends and learning so much about life. Many of his hardships also include his mother's emotional and financial problems. He is also without a father, which is a spot in his life that actually seems to be filled by the Pigman. One of the greatest friends he makes is one of his neighbors, Jennifer Wolupopski. Overall, this book has a very strong middle but the ending isn't quite as good as I hoped it would have been. I would still recommend it to any teenager or preteen between the ages of 11-16.

5-0 out of 5 stars nonfiction for fiction lovers
My 12 year old daughter loves Harry Potter and Sammy Keyes. She moaned when I insisted that she read a biography this summer.Lucky for her, The Pigman and Me was with the biographies in the "young adult" section of our library. It was not what I'd had in mind, but she absolutely loved it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The pigman and me
I read the book The Pigman and Me By paul zindel. This is the second book in the series that I have read, I enjoyed both very much. Each book in the series has its own separate caracters, story, and its own losson.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay stories
Good book about growing up and some of the great stories you're expect from your grandfather. Could have used less information on the beatings headmasters used to give students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some are funny. Some are painful. Some are unpleaseant. Perhaps this is why I have remembered them so vividly. All are true.
So says Roald Dahl in the introduction to his autobiogrophy,BOY. The book is a collection of his childhood memories, from the magical summers in Norway to the dreary days at St.Peters boarding school. As in all of Dahl's works the characters are quirky and memorable, but more fascinating here because they really existed. The auther recounts the adventures of his childhood with tenderness and dry humor.
5-0 out of 5 stars delightful melodrama
I'm a Dahl fan, a writerfor both adults and children. I think the key to his success as writer for children is that he doesn't think children are stupid or don't understand what they see. From my own experience, and now as a father, I know that children see, hear, think and make conclusions with their experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh... how great this autobiography is!
This autobiography is awesome! I am in the middle of it right now and it gives a lot of information about Robert Lawrence Stine's life. I can't wait until the next chapter!
5-0 out of 5 stars A great read
This book is really fun & interesting. R.L. Stine tells about why he likes scary things. You get to see his early works he did as a child. You also get to find out what "R.L." stands for and when his birthday is. Very informative! If your child is an R.L. Stine fan, this is the book for them.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy to read
I like this book because it had large type and I found it very easy to read. This would be a good book for readers who are not so advanced yet, because here you don't have to worry about difficult words. It's also funny and the pictures were a great addition to the book. It really stuck to the"My Life as a Writer" part of the title, because it just says howR.L. Stine has been writing all his life, from little comics to magazinesand finally to books, and the rest of it, which wasn't all that much, wasabout his family. This is the perfect book I know about that will help fanslearn about R.L. Stine, so I suggest you read it and see what you think. ... Read more

This is my favorite colection of poems for kids, if you don't count Shel Silverstein. (Otherwise I'd give it a 10.) When I want to laugh, I read Uncle Shelby. When I want to get serious I read this book. Though, one of the best poems in it, "The Nose" ispretty funny. So are some of the photos of the poets as cute little fat babies and kids! So on second thought I give it a 9 and a half. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heroines Are For Real
One of Hazell's talents is to sit you right down with the women she writes about as they live some telling moment. This book doesn't just outline facts about each person but gives the reader a feel of the time, the culture, the conflicts and private reasons each writer had for writing what she did.Sections with titles like "Love's Different Faces" help the reader contextualize each writer's main focus, and how each woman writer spoke for her time.Hazell's beautiful illustrations and margin graphics capture the inner landscape as well as pensive portraits of each writer; the faces are caught in moments of reflection, discovery, or some secret delight. This will inspire young writers to persevere despite obstacles, as the women in this book did; these women writers were/are real heroines. The author never talks down to the reader; adults can get a good read from this very informative and insightful book.

Editorial Review

In this first of five volumes of autobiography, poet Maya Angelou recounts a youth filled with disappointment, frustration, tragedy, and finally hard-won independence. Sent at a young age to live with her grandmother in Arkansas, Angelou learned a great deal from this exceptional woman and the tightly knit black community there. These very lessons carried her throughout the hardships she endured later in life, including a tragic occurrence while visiting her mother in St. Louis and her formative years spent in California--where an unwanted pregnancy changed her life forever. Marvelously told, with Angelou's "gift for language and observation," this "remarkable autobiography by an equally remarkable black woman from Arkansas captures, indelibly, a world of which most Americans are shamefully ignorant." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Intersectionality as described by Maya Angelou
In her autobiographical novel, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou recounts her life story as a young, keenly intelligent but insecure black girl in the South during the 1930s and California during the 1940s. The book conveys the difficulties associated with the mixture of racial and gender discrimination endured by a southern black girl, though, and this is perhaps the most fundamental theme explored in her autobiography. The intersectionality of race and gender is a pivotal thread of Angelou's theme, where more than one type of subjugation results in a multiple burden for the victim. Overall, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is a powerful, stirring account of the intersectionality of race and gender regarding black women. Though segregation had been officially declared null and void, many of the Southern states were steeped in racist tendencies that further multiplied the gender inequality that exposed black women to a multi-faceted oppression. Peiss, Hine, Terborg-Penn, Bederman, et. al. all examine threads of this intersectionality, and in discussing these threads, one can draw a distinct comparison between anti-black, anti-black women sentiment and Angelou's personal experiences. As a girl, Angelou believed her gender to be a limiting factor. She considered herself to be unheroic, and incapable of achieving spectacular feats like the boys in her comic books. In the narrative, being female for Angelou is just as trying as being black, and she struggled with the double burden, rather than embracing it. However, as more and more black women slowly overcame their troubles as a result of the overwhelming intersectionality of the time, so did Angelou. The novel ended with hope because she bucks the stereotype to become the first black female streetcar conductor. Angelou's spike in confidence and belief in her ability reflects the gradual evolution of black women's race and gender after decades of imprisonment, and foreshadows a future of activism, struggle for respect and eventual victory in those regards.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
The Essence of Dreams...The Creativeness of Silence...The Fortitude of Love...
1-0 out of 5 stars If only this scale had negatives...
Never before has such a poorly written book received such acclaim. Maya Angelou wrote this story not with candor and grace but with a bias rarely allowed to sit on shelves let alone the top of a best-seller list. She was not humorous but had a heinousness of character and action that places her beyond the limits of human pity. This "inspiring author" did not demonstrate poignancy and depth but the crude rudiments of writing skill below that found in the essays of a primary school student.

Editorial Review

This intriguing novel about the classic 12th-century love affair between Eloise and Abelard adds to the growing body of young adult novels with medieval themes. The story is told through the eyes of Aran, the mute servant of the charismatic philosopher-intellectual Abelard. As a teenager, tongue-tied Aran had been sold to a dealer in human oddities, who welded the boy into a metal vest so that he would grow into a "spider" with disproportionately long arms and legs. Abelard needs a servant who won't gossip about his passionate trysts with his beautiful and brilliant student Eloise. He rescues Aran by bringing him into his service, and thus the boy becomes a go-between and an observer of the famous romance. Idyllic love scenes contrast with episodes of bloody violence as the doomed affair plays itself out with Abelard's eventual castration by Eloise's guardian. When Aran gains his voice in a pseudo-miracle and grows in self-assurance, his hero worship of the selfish and insensitive Abelard begins to fade, but Eloise remains to him the symbol of an overwhelming passion he can never experience. A closing author's note zooms teens into the 21st century, noting the address of a Web site where they can read the actual love letters of this famous couple. (Ages 12 to 15) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complex plotting, memorable characters, highly entertaining.
Aran's observations of a favored mentor and his romance with a beautiful woman color his life, but violence intervenes and turns a mute boy into apotential sideshow oddity in this story of early France. Spider's Voice, isa fictional account which recreates the story of Abelard and Heloise, 12thcentury French lovers, and adds many historical insights in a complex plotrecommended for mature teens.

I'm a thirteen-year-old that loves to read. I haven't enjoyed twelfth-century books in the past, but this one caught my eye. The reason I enjoyed this book so much was because of it's amazing turn of events. I couldn't anticipate what would happen in this one, as I usually could. If you are looking at this book, I'd say to at least read a coupleparagraphs. I'm sure you won't be dissapointed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Barton's Own Words
It was a joy to use this book for a History Day presentation because there were comments in Barton's own words from her thoughts and diaries. There were little known facts to keep the interest of the young adult reader, andthese facts tied Barton to the historical background.I would highlyrecommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I found myself drawn in to this book
Extraordinary People with Disabilities by Kent and Quinlan (Grolier Publishing 1996) This excellent book tells the stories of over 50 outstanding individuals who overcame their disabilities. It is written so that one can choose to read short segments. However, when I picked it up, I felt energized and needed to read it cover-to-cover.The people profiled are from a variety of racial and economic backgrounds. Many of these individuals had physical disabilities but some of the stories profile people with learning or emotional disabilities. Through these stories, the book takes an activist stance. It tells of many who not only overcame their own disabilities, but went on to help other disabled people. The stories make it easier to understand the points of view of disability rights activists. The final chapter gives an overview ofimportant new technological aids for the disabled. It explains why some of these aids are controversial among the disabled community. A glossary gives succinct definitions of many of the terms used in the book. An appendix at the back of the book list many of the major organizations that advocate for individuals with physical and mental disabilities. There is also a section listing related books and journals. I would recommend this book to high school students and adults.Carol E Watkins, M.D. Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist

4-0 out of 5 stars overall a pretty cool book
This book is a good book to read if you want to know more about disabilities.I liked the wide range of people it told about. They are put in order from the year of the persons birth. The downside is that thebook can get boring at places telling about organizations for disabledpeople. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The real thing, straight from the show, by its own admission
I made my way to the WB as a result of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," so while I knew that "Dawson's Creek" was their teen soap opera but when a SNL skit made reference to Pacey I thought that was a different name for a girl. But when my students in Popular Culture begged to be able to write about this show for their television papers I started watching it (the gang was graduating from Capeside High in that episode).Last month when the show went into syndication and was available on DVD I was able to go back and watch the show all the way from the beginning and on through the grand finale (For the record, no, I was not surprised by who died or who Joey picked, not that I necessarily approved of either decision). In that context it is interesting to check out "Dawson's Creek: The Official Scrapbook" and relive the beginning once more.4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the 'major' fans!
This is good for fans of dawsons creek. Its full of pictures, but most are from the first season. Its not got a story line or anything its, just something to look threw that you would do very quickly and probably never look at again. If you just love the show, your gonna want to get this, but i would recoment getting one of the Dawsons Creek novels instead because they are far more entertaining!

4-0 out of 5 stars The low down on the lifes of the star's at Dawson's Creek!
This book is a must have of any Dawson's Creek fan! The book doesn't have a story line like any other Dawson's Creek book but describe the lifes of the 4 main characters in the Creek and in real life. By reading this bookyou find out about the star's past , present and future television and filmjobs .The book gives you information about which star bring's his dog towork every day , what starsign they are and what there nick-names were !You also find out about the characters in the creek which is a great helpto those people who haven't seen Dawson's Creek and don't know the backgrounds of all the characters. If this hasn't grasped you there is a pieceby the producer Kevin Wialliamson with his thoughts and comments. The bookalso has a copy of some of the original T.V script with Kevin Williamsoncomments . My favourite part of the book is a page full of some of the mostfamous quotes ever in Dawson's Creek which reminds you of past events inthe Creek. Over all I find this book a inspiring guide to the minds of 4 ofthe most confused teenagers which makes it a perfect guide to Dawson'sCreek! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars My "Romeo and Juliet" personal opinion
We like and sometimes didn't like this book. "Romeo and Juliet" is based in an "impossible " love. We recommend you not reading this book if you don't like romantic stories. 5-0 out of 5 stars Romeo & Juliet
Romeo & Juliet takes place in Verona in Feudal times. In that times women weren't given any rights. They couldn't hold property or discuss with their husband. This is shown during the whole book. Another thing different from nowadays was the language. Shakespeare uses a language, which I can't understand. So, in some parts were I don't know what a word means, the book becomes boring. Shakespeare, in a way, wrote female characters more intelligent and reflective than male, which in those times, women were objects. The story has different little stories in it. For example; the quarrel between the Capulet's gang and the Montague's; the impossible love between Romeo and Juliet; the trouble that Romeo has in Verona after killing Tybalt; Juliet has to marry Paris but she doesn't want and discusses bravely against her father; these make the story more interesting and it attracts the reader until the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romeo and Juliet
I think that this is a great book because it tells you how much two people can really love each other and they gave up their lifes for their love. Read more
