5-0 out of 5 stars Good stories, straight talk, useful advice
What I like about this book is that Kay Hong has that rare capacity of remembering what it was actually like being a teenager and being able to write about it in an honest and fresh way. I think adults will enjoy and linger over stories which remind them of what it was like to be a teen (including the highs and lows of that experience) while young people will enjoy getting some real-life advice that is not condescending. All of the real-life feelings come through in Hong's writing including her humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A few thoughts to soothe the adolescent in everyone
Get through the teen years with a healthy outlook and little permanent damage and you have a good chance of smooth sailing until the 40s and possibly retirement. But how to get through the teen years? Can a book help? This one might. The problem isn't that science and collective wisdom haven't uncovered a few clues about getting adolescence. It's how to get these life buoys to teens drowning in hormones, self awareness and doubt. Hong tosses them underhand, makes them simple, explains how they're used, how they helped her. No PhD trying to sell a thesis. Just good advice from a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars no sugar coating
K. L. Hong has written a book for teens in an adult voice that conveys true family values. Kay's honesty without the sugar coating and clarity without censorship provide teens a perspective on the meaning of "real world challenges." Sure, her challenges are different than those of teens today. That's the point. Each of us can only face our own challenges. Teens have theirs, adults have theirs. In the best world, we can learn from and better understand our choices with time. Kay's book teaches about the personal values that are necessary to navigate whatever challenges life presents.Perhaps the best review I could give a book like this is: I would give this book to all the teens in my life without reservation.

3-0 out of 5 stars 100 Women Who Shaped World History
I think this book is a wonderful book to read. It shows how women changed the world history by what they accomplished and how they stand up from their troubles. At the end of the book there's a really interesting trivia quiz. On top of each page, there's a map that shows where the women lived/lives. The only flaw in this book is that the pictures are not well drawn.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ugly drawings
The pictures in this book are very off putting. Yuck! If I had realized what the pictures looked like I would never have bought this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars 100 Women Who Shaped World History
I think this is an excellent book for girls to read because it shows them that there are women who changed or help change world history. The author tells about the troubles the women went though and what they accomplished. This book does not just talk about queens and princesses, but also includesless privileged women who made important changes. It goes all the way backto Queen Makare Hatshepsut in 1530 BC and ends withRigoberta Menchu. Thisbook includes a trivia quiz and maps to show you where the womenlived/live. Overall, I believe this is an excellent book because many ofthese women have been left out of school history books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, But No Cigar
I bought this book on the basis of the fine reviews. It is good, glossy, and an easy read. My disappointment is that I did not realize that this book is not geared to high school students. I had hoped to find activities that would spark my students, but --there is, for me, too big a stretch between text and activity. I can see the making a bird feeder and the references to birds in Shakespeare's works at an earlier level, but not for high school seniors. The book is, however, filled with historical references and good pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book for young and old.
It was great to revisit one of my favorite places in the world = Stratford-Upon-Avon = and to learn about London and the theatre in the 16th century. I loved this book and my teenage boys loved it, too. It isbeautifully written and well researched and the activities are a lot offun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to the life and times of Shakespeare

2-0 out of 5 stars An incomplete and lop-sided guide to the world of Harry Potter
As an adult fan of the Harry Potter series, I am fascinated by Ms. Rowling and her talent as a writer which brought this magical world to life. When I purchased 'Muggles and Magic,' I looked forward to reading more about the author and the pop culture surrounding this phenomenon.
2-0 out of 5 stars Just ok, most info is available online
It's not a bad book but nothing really stands out about it either. It has a lot of information on J.K with quotes, background, and a bit of a biography. I did learn some new information about her but most of it is already known; single mother, thought of Harry Potter on a train, wrote in a caf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad to see it end
I have 26 more pg. to read, & I don't want this book to end. I am enjoying seeing parts of Mrs. Cleary's life in her fiction books. I now want to re-read all my Ramona books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Volume Two of Beverly Cleary's Wonderful Autobiography
A must-read for all Beverly Cleary fans.Picks up the story where "A Girl from Yamhill" left off and takes us through her college years and her career as a librarian.A book that will inspire you to become a librarian or a children's book author. As well writen and accessible as all of her children's books about the gang on Klikitat Street.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad to See It End
After devouring Beverly Cleary's first memoir "A Girl From Yamhill" I couldn't wait to read My Own Two Feet. The only thing to complain about is that there isn't a sequel to this one! Picking up where Yamhill left off, we share in Beverly Cleary's journey through college and into her adult years and the writing of her first book, Henry Huggins. Reading Cleary's Memoirs, I was taken back to my own childhood and my love for Ramona & Beezus.Cleary has a unique gift of simple writing that readers of all ages can enjoy, whether you are 8 or 80. I lover her writing as much today as I did when I was in the 3rd grade. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!
This book is the best. It felt so down-to-earth. You feel like you know he williams sisters. I truly disagree with the person who talked about this book being about Jehovah's Witness. They don't encourage reades in any way to become a Jehovahs Witness. This is such a good book, I don't see how anyone could bad-mouth it. I had the good fortune to meet Venus, and I'm not lying i swear, and she is so nice and friendly. She gives off such a good vibe. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!! BUY IT PLEASE!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, accessible biography of our 26th president
The choice of Teddy Roosevelt is a good one to get kids to read about this raucous period of American history.Well illustrated with period photos and cartoons, the text is engaging and fast-paced.Perfect gift for that young teenager on your list, I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to read this!

5-0 out of 5 stars He Tackled the Status Quo
Even the Presidency did not take the boy out of Theodore Roosevelt.A century ago, when Washington was a simpler place, TR engaged in such youthful sports as wintry swims in the Potomac. President Roosevelt showed similar courage in tackling financial tycoons or forcing Spain out of Cuba. TR was a significant figure on the political stage from the 1880s through World War I.He was an active, early conservationist. Betsy Kraft's well-paced, illustrated biography will engage young (and older) adults. The author brings this man and his era to life.Public libraries and high schools should find it valuable. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars UNVEILING EVEN DARKER SHAME
This book should be required reading for all Black History classes. Lester spent long weeks researching documents in the Library of Congress, assimilating first-person accounts of runaway slaves, former slaves and descendents of slaves in order to reconstruct a shameless timeline of slavery in America. Each quotation is followed by a literary acknowledgment of one of his three main sources.Interspersed among the abundant personal recollections by long-desceased informants, the author adds his own historical introspection and insight in italics.

Do you think the book your read is lousy, well get ready for an amazing hearttouching true story. ''To be a slave'' is a true event in history about slavery. Read how slaves worked and how the were treated. As importantpeople talk about how they were treated or how thier family was treated .Iwould reccomend this book to kids and to adults or even people who intersted in history or slavery. This book takes place in the east coastand the southeast of the us. I think the message of the story is treat people how you want to be treated. 4-0 out of 5 stars OK book
I picked this book up off of my shelf, because I am currently awaiting the arrival of other books I order. The last book I read I had also randomly selected and it turned out to be a WONDERFUL book.(Rebels Angels). This book however was okay. I am normally a fan of Ann Rinaldi, however this book just didn't take me in as her other books have. I thought that Phillis could have done much more with her gift. Especially towards the end of the book. She always seemed to taken aback by things that happened. When what was happening was obvious to happen earlier in the book. She was also so distracted most of the book that she failed to see what was their all along. In my personal opinion she cried to much. I wanted to say come on whats happened is past get up and do something about it. If you only pay attention to what is written on the page you won't like this book a whole lot in MY OPINION. If you read between the lines though and you get the meanings and the struggle of this poor child you will enjoy this book. I read this book in 2 days and I thought that what was written had a deeper meaning and by the end of the book I got that. So if you read this book which you may like read the whole book. Don't give up on it because by the end of the book you find the true meaning.
4-0 out of 5 stars necessary reading!
First of all, to everyone who complained about this book being long and boring, please get an attention span. I read this book in no time at all, and I wasn't bored once.
1-0 out of 5 stars Boooooooooooooooooring
After reading this book, I wished to hang myself with a thousand ribbons. It is a fictional work of junk and a waste of my time. Phillis constantly complains about everything going on in her life, even though most of it never happened. It was boring, useless, untrue, poinless, petty, junk, and all around horrible. It made me miserable and I chose to burn it when I was done. If I wasn't forced to read it, I would've never wasted my money reading this junk. I searched for the audiobook to numb the pain but to no avail, I was stuck reading the whole thing. I pity anyone else who must read this garbage. I suggest you take the money you were going to spend on this and burn it, it will save you time, effort, and will be much more rewarding. Sorry to all who read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars coming of age
Although I loved this book, I was hestitant to include it on my classroom shelves for 8th graders. Now that I am now teaching high school, I decided to include this book on the shelves in my classroom for SSR time.Since August, eight of my male students have read the book. I was very pleasantly surprised when there was no giggling about the book. Then I noticed that it was only the most mature of my students that were choosing to read it.At the beginning of the school year, I included the book in book talks, and that peaked the interest of some of my students. However, the less mature students never get past the first chapter. Even if you're not a teenager, I recommend this book highly. My husband enjoyed it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars the run away
The kid left his home and went to work on a beet field. He made friends with the Mexicans. He followed then around and worked with them. Then on one of the farms the farmer offered him a job. Then he drove a tractor for the farmer. Then one day when he came up from the fielded there was a cop waiting for him. He took him to jail for running away.
3-0 out of 5 stars Beware of offensive language and subject matter
This is a glimpse into Paulsen's 16th summer, when he left his drunken parents to pursue life on his own.He takes work as a laborer in the beet fields where he befriends Mexican workers and learns to hunt pigeons with his bare hands, and later does farm work, joins the crew of a traveling carnival, and learns about lust from an older, much more experienced woman.

3-0 out of 5 stars A great story that lost something in this telling..
The writing is clear and manages to convey many of the important details of Wallenberg's life, yet it was written for a typical young-adult audience. To a sopisticated reader this text can come across as a bit hollow and wooden. These amazing human beings and the incredible times they lived in appear somewhat simplified and one-dimensional in this book. It was lacking a bit too much in feeling and deeper exploration of human nature for this adult reader. Still Wallenberg's life is a great story and worthy of being told many times over. It's just that this one alone fails to do it complete justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be on Everyones Must Read List
This book should be read by everyone. It is informative, well written, and provides information one one of the true heros in the history of mankind. If you read "Shindlers Ark" (or saw the movie) you'll really enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars History that is more exciting than the best-selling fiction
As a parent, I know how hard it is to find excellent, high-quality nonfiction books for older children who are at an in-between stage - not quite ready for adult books but too old for "juvenile" books. This true account of Raoul Wallenberg, a man who saved more than 100,000 Jewish men, women and children from extinction during the Holocaust, is gripping and well-written. My kids could NOT put it down and one of them is a reluctant reader, so that says a lot right there. Watching my reluctant reader with his eyes glued to the page compelled me to pick up the book myself and I was glad I did.The author has used actual archival materals and even interviewed Wallenberg's family and friends. There are also photographs included, a special touch that brings a sense of immediacy to the past. Perhaps most importantly, the author has not "talked down" to the older children who are most likely to read this book (although it could be read aloud to younger ones). Adults, too, would find this one fascinating to read. A strong recommendation for this one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book to display the emergence of an abused woman
"The Color Purple" is a good book showing how an abused woman finds her place in life without a man. From a womanist perspective the reader can come into Celie's world and feel her pain, and at times, her glory. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Abracadabra Kid Rate
This book shows basically all of Sid Fleischman's career life. This is from when he was a boy to now. In his first career he wanted to be a magician, and that's what this book is mainly about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids
I was surprised to see that a reviewer called this a book that could teach kids how to write. Of course it can, but it can teach *anyone* of any age how to be a better writer. Sid Fleischman's sweet, gentle humor shines through on every page. His advice to aspiring magicians, authors, parents, human beings in general is so sound and so commonsensical that at first it seems simplistic. It isn't. Nothing he advises is obvious; it's just that he expresses it so well and it makes so much sense that his words slip into your work and make it, and you, better.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE MAGIC OF BECOMING A WRITER
Do you want to become a writer? Here's how. First become a magician, then travel the high seas, drop into a reporter's job andstart having a family. Once done write a few screen plays and use your kids to critique your work. Does the above sound unbelievable? Yes indeed, except that it is true. Sid Fleischman did live such a life and now is sharing it with his fans.Read more
