5-0 out of 5 stars Touching Story
Hanna Jansen's OVER A THOUSAND HILLS I WALK WITH YOU is a touching tribute to her adopted daughter who was orphaned in the Rwandan war. Based on her daughter's recollections of her childhood--memories both pleasant and bittersweet--Jansen weaves a tale of sorrow, hope, fear, joy, and love. For example, the early chapters of the book feature a young girl living life large. She is visiting her grandmother. She's playing with her cousins. She's fighting with her sister and brother. Her mom works outside the home, her dad is away a lot...and she has an incredibly whiny sister that she struggles with on a daily basis. She's vibrant and unaware that her world would change in just a few short years. Later chapters reveal the pain, the loss, the confusion, the fear of not knowing if one is going to survive another day. Witnessing such atrocities as seeing your parents and siblings killed by strange soldiers. Seeking help from family friends, yet being turned away because they don't want to risk dying too. Her survival story is inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly not fiction
I read this book several years ago and could hardly put it down until I finished it.I wrote to the publisher to ask if this book was fiction, but I got no reply.I had the impression in reading it that is was not fiction, and yet the words 'fictionalized' and 'novel' are used for it on Amazon. I was curious to know what is fiction in it and what is not.
5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!
This book is a wonderful book. I have read it over 3 times now and I still want to read it again. Before I read the book I had some sibling problems, and after reading it I am now closer to my sisters. It teaches you how much you need your family and what they can do for you. I think it is more than a 5 star book. It should be a 100 star book. I think if most people in the world read it our world would be changed. It would be peaceful and people would not get into big arguments. That is how much this book can change us. If you don't beleive me you should read this wonderful, fantastic, brilliant book by Yoko Kawashima Watkins. It is one novel you'll never forget!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource!
My daughter recieved this book as a gift for her 13th birthday. It was perfect timing! We needed to be talking about these issues, but I was not sure how to bring them up in a constructive way.I would read a chapter during the day and my daughter would read it when she got home from school, then after dinner we would talk about the contents of that chapter...it really opened up alot of positive communication. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Book For All Ages
I purchased this book as a gift for my teenage niece and found myself at first leafing through it and then later reading the entire book! This is truly an inspirational book for all who read it.Though it's directed at the teen sector, I found affirmations that still ring true for adults. We do still need to be told that our self-worth is not dependent on others assessments of ourselves. This book is perfect for teens because it speaks to them on their level--it doesn't try to preach a philosophy that may still be foreign to some teens.Ms. Evans gets to the heart of teens...and adults.Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Graduating Girlhood
Graduating Girlhood is a must-have for anyone who has a pre-teen or teenage daughter.I am so thankful to the author for offering a book that is full of information that Mothers and Fathers appreciate, written in a language that really speaks to teen girls. The book is motivational and inspires girls to take charge of their lives and consciously create the future they want.It encourages self exploration and teaches life skills that are invaluable.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Little Book
Some qualifications for opining to start. I have read this book and I am a public school teacher with 9 years of teaching elementary school. I have a BA in Psychology and a M Ed.
2-0 out of 5 stars Darwin would be Proud
This book, written by Henry Morris and Chuckie Darwin, gives new perspective of creationism. The science of intelligent design shows the blueprint used by an "intelligent designer" to create the universe.Periodically, the creatures designed, both evolved and changed.Monkey may or may not have evolved into man.But various creatures have changed as God planned they would.God can make these plans, because ... well, ... He is God!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for late elementary and early middle school
This is a good book if you want "just the facts".If you're searching for intimate details about the lives of these scientists or discussions about parallel universes, then this isn't the reading selection.Yes, written from a decidedly christian viewpoint ...so, what's the problem? If you are afraid or refuse to give God credit for creating the universe, then, again, this is not the selection for you.I like this author and publisher because we can present God and science to our children and not treat them as mutually exclusive. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars the moon and i
this book has absolutely nothing to do with the moon.this is a story about betsy byars life.she tells about some points in her life that inspired some ofher books.and she explains how a snake made her think about it all.this is the first book i've read by her.if all of her books are writen like this, then i would love to read others.

4-0 out of 5 stars The moon and I review
"The Moon and I" is an excellent book that tells the life of the famous author, Betsy Byars. It is a good autobiography. It has vivid descriptions. Betsy writes about her life and how she met a black snake,Moon.I like this book because it makes me feel like I'm with her in herlife. What I dislike about this book is that the title was a littlemisleading.I thought it was about a moon! I recommend this book toanyone; it is for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Book!
In this excellently written book, Betsy Byars describes her friendship with moon (a snake she finds),tells bits of her childhood adventures, and gives helpful writing tips.A book that most anyone will enjoy.BetsyByars has an amazing way with words! 4-0 out of 5 stars Or Give Me Death
This novel of Patrick Henry's family, written by Ann Rinaldi is a fascinating story.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
This book was "required reading" for this past summer. I fliched at it before I read it. (Last years reading was horrid) I thought it was great though. (I do love history) It is very descriptive, and a farily easy read. I enjoyed it so much I picked up some other titles by Ann Rinaldi. I like the second half (Anne's) better. But never try to explain it to someone it becomes to complicated, but is still easy to read. I din't really like the ending, it was to abrupt for me. This book does take a while to get going, but once it does,it never stops!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars I didn't feel the history part of this story.
"Or Give Me Death: A Novel of Patrick Henry's Family" is an Ann Rinaldi book that did not feel like an Ann Rinaldi book.I became confused with the book starting out with the protagonist as Patsy, and then switching to Anne.I think it would have been better to stick with one and go with it (Anne being the best choice). The ending was much too abrupt for my liking - as if Rinaldi reached her page quota and ended it right there.I'm also used to her having epilogues - I wanted to know what became of these people, since you rarely learn anything about Patrick Henry.I "sorta" recommend ... 5-0 out of 5 stars eleanor's best book ever!
WOW, what a book i would say. It's a very moving book about the memoirs of Helen Waterford and Alfons Heck during WWII.This book should be in high school history not to say only for high schoolers but 12 year olds and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Aryan and Jew become friends
This book is not your usual book. It details the lives of Ayran Alfons Heck and Jewish Helen Waterford.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a book you can not put down!
Seriously this book is impossible to stop reading once you pass a certain point. I stayed up 'til seven in the morning reading this book. Mind you I started reading that night around ten or eleven at night. It is seriously that captivating. This book tells some very important and over-all relatively unknown facts about the period surrounding WWII. It is an intriguing and captivating book that I believe every human being high school age and older should read. I also think it should be added to high school curriculums. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Sensationalistic rubbish...
I read this book because I had heard so many wonderful things about it. Phrases like 'life-changing' and 'stunningly perceptive' were used by people who described their encounter with this book. I found it to be completely the opposite. I mean no slander to 'Jay.' I assume there is a real person this clearly fictional character is based on. It is not the contents of his journal that I critique, rather, Ms. Sparks' presentation of it. She tries to convince us that she had deep insight into this young man, enough to take his journal and throw in sensationalistic anecdotes, and call it a respectable work. I am certain that his family did not want him represented in this way; a drug-crazed loser who drinks animal blood in his free time from debauchery and stupidity. I think anyone who buys into this crap story should consider sense and fact; think if what is written sounds plausible and balanced. Chances are, if you look past the initial glamour of a drug memoir, you'll see that 'Jay' is enormously wronged by this deceitful nonsense.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too awful for words
First of all, Beatrice Sparks has made a career of fashioning "real" diaries of teenagers out of, well, actually nothing except her own very conservative Mormon religious beliefs. The anti-heroine of "Go Ask Alice" did not exist; she is a figment of Sparks's imagination, although Sparks did claim that there WAS an "Alice" who did die, but the cause of her death was not conclusively determined. Her knowledge of the elusive Alice is totally unsubstantial and vague; there is NO ONE who could verify the actual existence of the girl. And reading the text of "Go Ask Alice" it's quite obvious the writing is not that of a teenager. I read GAA as a teenager; even then I thought Alice sure knew a lot of big words for a silly teenage girl. I read "Jay's Journal" when I was teenager, or tried to. I stopped reading it early on because it was just too absurd. I thought "how can anyone believe THIS?" What is so deplorable about "Jay's Journal" (aside from the laughable attempt to portray the author of this dreck as a teenager) is that it smears the life and death of a young man who was depressed and disturbed, but NOT a devil-worshipping, kitten-killing, blood-drinking Satanist. Alden Barrett was a highly intelligent, sensitive kid. He had problems with a girlfriend. He needed professional help, but didn't get any, and his depression overwhelmed him. His death and the grief his family felt at his loss are bad enough. But the poor family put their trust in Sparks to honor his memory and perhaps help others by giving her his diary entries to fashion into a book, and she does THIS. Now Alden Barrett is considered by a lot of people to be a despicable Satan worshipper who deserved his fate. His grave has been desecrated several times over. "Jay's Journal" is a LIE, a hoax, an awful deception. Beatrice Sparks has caused Alden Barrett's family a lot of agony. And for what? A rotten book where a teenage boy actually talks like this: "Life isn't worth a poop-de-do!" For shame.

1-0 out of 5 stars I don't Believe this!
Here I was reading this book, thinking that I was actually reading a true story, until I decided to look it up on Amazon. Luckily I didn't pay much (library sell) And things just didn't add up to me either. I was debating on whether or not i wanted to finish this book, and now i do not. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ann Rinaldi has done it again...
Ann Rinaldi never disappoints--Nine Days a Queen was another excellent novel.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Teens!
NINE DAYS A QUEEN, perfectly reveals the compelling story of Lady Jane Grey. Her story, which is told in a first person narrative, begins at the age of nine when she is sent to the Court of Henry VIII by her manipulative and ambitious parents. Here she meets her future guardians, Katherine Parr (the sixth of Henry's wives) and Thomas Seymour; she reconnects with her cousins, the future King Edward VI, Princess Mary (later Queen Mary I) and the Princess Elizabeth (Elizabeth I).Her happiness at escaping the harsh, unpleasant world of her parents is charmingly evident though almost fleeting when one considers her short life.Soon enough upon Katherine's death, Jane is back home as her parents continue to scheme to make the most advantagous marriage and future for her.Maneuvered into accepting the crown after Edward's death in a ploy filled with both religious and political overtones, she is abandoned and left to falter by those who should be closest to her.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but less than I'd hoped for
I should preface my review by saying Ann Rinaldi wrote this book for teens, and I read it when I was 35, after reading several other books on the Tudors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
This book details the real life story of a boy at fourteen that decided he wnated to kill himself. After he tries he decides he does not want to go through with it and he gets himself all wet to put the fire out. After this he goes through great detail of the year after the sucide attmept and his inner thoughts about the whole suicide. I really enjoyed reading this book and I believe that this book is good for many people to read to truly understand all of the pain that can come from commiting suicide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good description of teen depression
As someone who has lived with depression for many years and who as a teenager has also tried to hurt myself, I felt that Runyon did a good job of describing the elusive and often non-descript feelings of teen depression--including his inability (post-suicide attempt) to talk with his parents and psychiatric professionals about why he set himself on fire. While some might want this book to be the rememdy for depressed teens everywhere, it is not a self-help book for teens disguised as memoir. There are no answers for troubled teens.Rather, it is a memoir.Even without providing any answers, it is still a good way to open the topic of teen suicide and depression. I loaned the book to my mother who said it did help her understand a little more what I was feeling when I was a teen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaching and learning tool...
I recommend it as a good read for adolescents and adults and as a great teaching tool for middle school and older students. I plan to read excerpts to my students this year.

1-0 out of 5 stars BORING....
You shouldn't buy it i've had it for four years and ive only read the first ten pages I'm selling it because it is pointless!

4-0 out of 5 stars It's all about Nick....
If you thought you knew all there is to know about Nick Carter, think again! Jane Carter tells us some stuff about her son that only she and the rest of Nick's family know about. This is a very nice book, beautifully written by Jane. It is full of secrets and anecdotes about Nick's childhood and rise to superstardom. However, the information about Nick's career may seem kind of old, now, since this book was published in 1998. Perhaps Jane should have waited a couple of years before writing a book about her son, because God knows she would have plenty of things to say : she could give her opinion on Nick's arrest, his solo career, the trials and tribulations that the Backstreet Boys have been through, Nick's relationship with Willa Ford (yeah right, like Nick would let her write about that!!), etc. Nick's been through a lot of things since 1998, and I believe that if Jane decided to write another book about Nick, it would have a lot more substance and depth than this one. But don't get me wrong! It's a great read, as pleasant as a fairytale. Because, in many ways, that's what Nick's life is! And seeing it through his mother's eyes really gives it a whole new dimension.

4-0 out of 5 stars As a BSB fan you have to read it some time..................
I have got the book and I like the writing style and to know the facts as a BSB fan. I kinda think it's wrong to get money out of someone else his succes, but on the other hand it ain't lies and Nick knew of and agreed with it, so as not such a big fan anymore (NO I didn't become a hater) I would suggest it, but not too much. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
If you are a reader of fantasy, an aspiring writer, or simply an avid book-lover, don't miss this book! The Wand in the Word gives you insights on 13 different authors and their lives and work routines, including Brian Jacques, Diana Wynne Jones, Susan Cooper and Lloyd Alexander. The authors tell how World War II, reading The Lord of the Rings for the first time, or listening to their grandparents tell stories affected the different authors and their careers in different ways. One of my favorite quotes from the book comes from the interview with Brian Jacques:
5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and inspiring look at fantasy authors
This is one of the most interesting and inspirational books that I've read in a long time. Through the interviews and profiles, Marcus' masterfully brings out the best in each author, providing a fascinating look at some of the leading authors in the fantasy genre. Find out how Lloyd Alexander's experiences in the military during World War II influenced his writing, or how Diana Wynne Jones kept Tolkein from finishing The Lord of the Rings! It's inspiring to read about how authors are regular people who faced the same kinds of problems in childhood as everyone else: problems in school, problems with parents, problems with other kids. One even had dyslexia. Taken together it presents a powerful and inspirational message that anyone can be a writer, that anyone can overcome their personal obstacles to achieve their dreams. Each author also gives advice for young, aspiring writers. Highly recommended for fantasy fans, aspiring writers, or anyone who just needs a bit of inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars They tell us that dragons can be beaten
I was into Leonard S. Marcus before it was cool.Really!Okay, fine.I wasn't.In fact, until I read his collection of the letters of Ursula Nordstrom ("Dear Genius") and heard about his Margaret Wise Brown bio ("Margaret Wise Brown: Awakened By the Moon") I didn't know just what a great editor and writer he could be.But now that he's come out with "The Wand In the Word: Conversations With Writers of Fantasy", I have a feeling his star is going to rise pretty high.Anyone could write a book with an interview by Jane Yolen. You might even be able to squeeze out some interest if you included a talk with Garth Nix.But a glance at the people included in this book and it begins to get a little silly.Lloyd Alexander? He's still alive? And Nancy Farmer? How did he get her?Susan Cooper!! Omigod I LOVE Susan Cooper! There are only thirteen fantasy writers contained in this volume, but with the notable exception of J.K. Rowling, they are undoubtedly the greatest living fantasy writers working today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful Woman, a Beautiful Book
Samantha herself gave me a copy of this book, and I cannot tell you what a true gift it was.As a woman who has struggled with my own anxiety disorder for almost 10 years, the honesty and reality of her story moved me often to the point of tears.Everyone who feels alone with their anxiety, or who knows someone who suffers from an anxiety disorder, should read this book, if only to know that THEY ARE NOT ALONE.Knowing Samantha and seeing firsthand what a lovely, sane, compassionate, accomplished woman she has become, in spite of her disorder, makes her book all the more powerful for me, because it shows me that there is hope!I recommend this book to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars A window into somewhere you never want to go
Reading this book is almost like reading somebody else's diary.Samantha Schutz is open and honest with the most intimate details of her life during a nightmarish four year period from the end of high school through college graduation.

How would you feel if you were arrested even though you didn't commit a crime? That is what happened to Esther Rudomin and her family. They were very frightened when Russian soldiers came to their door, forcing them to leave their home just because they were capitalists and were considered enemies o the people.
