4-0 out of 5 stars Where have you gone, Teddy Roosevelt, our nation turns...
Jean Fritz is perhaps best known for her short picture book biographies of Revolutionary War Heroes.I was anxious to read this particular book, and to my great surprise found it to be much longe than her usual fare.Just the same, the book carries the same spirit and adept interesting writing Fritz has employed on her other ventures.I had some disappointments with this book, it's true, but all in all I think it's a fine biography and the best one out there for any kid interested (or required) in reading about our odd twenty-sixth President.5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read!
This was such a joy to read.I just couldn't put the book down.I had no idea that Teddy Roosevelt had an affliction that he overcame, thanks in part to his ambitious father.5-0 out of 5 stars Bully for you, theodore roosevelt!
An excellent chidren's biography of theodore roosevelt, which will be enjoyed by people of all ages.My only criticism is that the books title should be 'Bully for you, theodore roosevelt,' instead of 'Bully for you, teddy roosevelt,' a name which to him was anathema. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Romancing the Island
Mr. Hamill takes on every bit of New York and discusses why he loves even the worst parts of it. He crafts a walk downtown thru the 1800's past buildings and men who shaped this city and produces a novel that inspires.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start Spreading the News...
This book was much more than I had expected.Thinking that it would be more autobiographical, I was pleasantly suprised to find that it was really the story of New York City, specifically the downtown area of Manhattan. Being a native New Yorker, Hamill gives great insight not only into the historical facts surrounding the city's origin, but also its lore, its people, its music, its drama, and its tradition. This book is so heaped with history, yet it reads so easily like a great love story.Like most New Yorkers, the names and faces of those who came before are soon forgotten, but Hamill brings them back to life again in a very real way.He leaves us with this feeling of connectedness to our past and a senseof longing nostalgia for old New York. However, he reminds us that New Yorkers do not live in the past and that self-pity is a mortal sin.The story of New York is verymuch one of constant difficult change, earned renewal, progressiveness, tolerance and optimism. These traits have been a part of the city since its origins and more important than ever as we see these traits come alive once again after 9/11.This book is a treasure to anyone who loves New York and wants to understand its history and its people without having to sift throughtextbooks that only gives facts. Put your vagabond reading glasses on and be a part of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lyrical and Lucid Glance at New York
Pete Hamill's "Downtown: My Manhattan" is part of the latest spate of books that combine personal New York City experience and New York City history, as do Colson Whitehead's "The Colossus of New York" (in a way) and Phillip Lopate's "Waterfront". However, Hamill's is as different from those two other books as those two books are different from each other. I don't know what is causing these authors to write such material--maybe the nostalgia brought about by the horrors of 9/11--but I'm glad they did.

Did you know that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had an older sister who was another musical genius? Musicologists even speculate that some compositions attributed to Mozart were actually the work of his sister. Nannerl Mozart is just one example of how women and their accomplishments have been ignored or erased entirely from world history. This important book seeks to amend that gaping absence in history books and popular culture by acknowledging the countless women whose contributions have made a difference to modern society. 5-0 out of 5 stars All About Women!
Here's one of the few great books that focus on women and their accomplishments only instead of men. This book featured 120 biographal sketches of women such as Cleopatra VII, Queen Victoria, Anna Pavlova, Gabrielle "Coco" Channel, Harriet Tubmanm, Elizabeth Blackwell, Queen Elizabeth I, and much, much more. These biographies are all wonderful, easy to read, and clearly say what these women have done and accomplished. This is the perfect book for anyone who wants to read about women who have done amazing things. After all, women are capable of accomplishing and doing anything, and this book clearly shows that!

5-0 out of 5 stars A necessity to anyone interested in women's history
What a gem!I have many history books about women because I want to share women's history with my children.I was of the generation where women were left out of the history class and I feel that women are still in large left out of much of the classes in today's schools. This book does a great job of including many women from different eras, genres and ethnicities. There are photos and great summaries that are short enough to interest children, but in-depth enough to give the reader a knowledgeable understanding.I highly recommend this book to anyone, at any level!

5-0 out of 5 stars exellent!
This is the best book! Are you tired or reading about history through the eyes of a man? Before this history was documented by wars and treatys but this book is totally different. You learn about history as well asher-story,I learned about more than a hundred other women who changed themovement of the world. Some created inventions, others opened schools, they fighted for wemens rights and protested their weekness by workingtwice as hard as any man. This was a great book I really injoyed readingit, I hope you do too. ... This book was greatly written and very emotional. It was recommended to me by a former American History teacher and I was grateful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thousand years
Livia Bitton-Jackson's I Have Lived a Thousand Years is her story of life during WWII and the holocaust. Livia, known as Elli, was 13 years old when her family was forced out of their home and sent to Auschwitz. Her brother and father were sent to the male side of the camp, and Livia and her mother were sent to the female side. Because Livia was 13 years old, and still a child, she would have been sent to the gas chambers. But an officer took a liking to Elli's blonde hair, told her to lie and say she was 16, and led her to the path towards the camp, and away from the gas chambers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Ruth Williams
I have Lived a Thousand Years by Livia Bitton-Jackson is a disturbingly honest memoir of a thirteen year old Jewish girl living in the Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. The experience of living in the death camp Auschwitz is graphically shocking and distressing, but also miraculous because she actually survives. The story is told in the voice of Elli, in a direct present tense and, although a bit simple, the words and thoughts do seem to come from the mouth of a teenage girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walter Dean Myers Succeeds Again!
Evaluation:This is a wonderfully written biography of an influential African American, Malcolm X. Beginning with his birth in 1925 and ending with his assassination in 1965, Walter Dean Myers describes the trials and tribulations of one of America's radical African American leaders. The book details the many differences between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. Though both men aimed to lift the African American people from their second class citizenship,Martin Luther King believed in a nonviolent approach. On the other hand, Malcolm X believed that the African American community needed to revolt. "Revolution is bloody, revolution is hostile, revolution knows no compromise, revolution overturns and destroys everything that gets in its way" (p. 107). These were Malcolm X's words as he described his belief that no African American solution could possibly involve fitting into a white society.Students will enjoy reading this biography. They will come to learn about a controversial figure in America. Several photographs and illustrations will help to entice even the most reluctant of readers.
5-0 out of 5 stars A new look
Myers takes a new look at the Malcom X story with a special light on his childhood. The book is well organized with a blueprint of the structures that made up his life.

4-0 out of 5 stars My idol, my admirer, my savior... Malcom X
Malcom X, as we know is a well known activist throughout the world. However, while reading "By any means necessary", I have come across a different Malcom X, infact the first Malocm X that I have come across with was Malcom Little. This was Malcom as a little boy, a Malcom who worked really hard in school to achive his goal to become a lawyer. But this dream of his, would only be dream because Malcom was black.Malcom's intelligence was over looked just because he was not white.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars We Are Witnesses
I am not a big fan of non-fiction history books. I find them hard to concentrate on because there are so many facts that they become overwhelming. But We Are Witnesses is a non-fiction history book that I liked. First, I liked it because it was set during WWII, which is something I am interested in. Secondly, this book is about five teenagers, which I can relate to because I am in the same age group. Each of their diaries was found. They all were Jewish, they all died.
5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping history alive!
This set of stories helps keep history alive for teenagers that have no concept of the depth horror that intolerance can achieve. All teens should read it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok I guess
This book was OK. I had to read it for school but I agree that it had way too many narrations in it and the only thing that captured the teens' feelings and thoughts were the scant entries from their diaries. This book didn't move me at all. If the author had put more of the kids' entries in it, it might be more effective. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I didn't want it to end
I ordered Beverly Cleary's two autobiographies on Amazon, and recieved them last week. The first of the two is called, "A Girl From Yamhill" and the second is, "My Own Two Feet".Both are excellently written. The first is of her childhood until she goes off to college and the second is her college days and a few years beyond. She has a style of writing that makes you feel as though you have known her your whole life and are the dearest of friends. What amazed me the most about these books is how timeless they are.Even though she grew up during the depression and went to college before the advent of computers and the technology boom, it was eye opening to see that the human condition and experiences don't really change all that much. She is an excellent storyteller, and the words on the page lept into my mind's eye and I could see it unfold before as if I were watching it on a movie screen.I was sad to see the first book end, but glad that I had ordered the second book as well. Then when I finished the second book I found myself wishing that she had written another book to tell more of her life's stories.I finished reading them both within a couple of days and found myself doing something I have never done before.I immediately began to read them again ( I am currently half way through the first book). If you grew up loving her children's books as I did, then these are a must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Simple
When I was in grade school I read every Beverly Cleary book I could. I have never forgotten Ramona or Henrie! This Memoir was simply written. Really not much happens here. There isn't a lot of depth to Ms. Cleary's writting but I will admit I enjoyed this book very much. I am planning on reading the sequel next!

5-0 out of 5 stars In a word: Charming
As an avid reader of contemporary fiction, it was a pleasant and surprising change of pace to read this autobiography of Beverly Cleary's early years. Her life on the Yamhill is depicted with such immediacy and heartfelt affection that it made me wish I had brought my children up on a farm.It seems that the farm years (only until 1st grade) set her up for life. The rest of Beverly's life in Portland was marked by arguments with her strict and difficult mother, the poverty of the depression, and her father's sadness at being away from the farm he loved.Somehow Beverly always retains her sense of self and makes her life sound downright enviable. The tales of her struggles with school, her mother, money, and an over-ardent boyfriend are told with humor and equanimity. The reader can't help but love Beverly. She makes you yearn for a simpler time.I know that she turned 89 last week.I hope she is well. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Delightful read
Since I read Rain of Gold first, I noticed that a couple of vignettes in the book were cited from it, but nevertheless, I still enjoyed the read. These are stories from the heart, and for non-practicing Catholics, it certainly explains away a family's faith and spirituality as a away of living, coping and survival.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice nightime reading
I read Rain of Gold over 10 years ago, when I saw "Walking Stars" I decided to give it a try. I must say, the stories were a nice way to end a day. My daughters enjoyed them as bedtime reading. With the world shouting so much doom & gloom, this book helped us remember - it's all good.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delight for All Ages
I'm a paper artist who also happens to be a Hans Christian Andersen fan.I bought the book for myself, although it would be a terrific selection for a child who likes to use scissors and glue or who might be interested in the person behind some of their favorite fairy tales. It's hard to find many printed examples outside of Denmark of Hans Christian Andersen's cut paper work.Beth Wagner Brust is a paper cutter herself and brings this enthusiasm to her book. She has performed a great service for Andersen fans and paper cutters of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is A Real Treasure
Like so many Americans, I had no idea HC Andersen was a paper-cutting genius, until reading the series of articles by Ms. Brust in the LA Times. Not to mention that he cut these "amazing" intricate pieces while telling one of his stories to a roomful of listeners at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars "BLACK BOY"beats the system !
Richard Wright grew up in the early 1930s . . . thinking that a library card was the TICKET TO FREEDOM. His mother used 'funny papers' to teach him to read but his formal education went only through 9th grade. A chance for a job took him to Memphis, Tennessee, and there he continued to yearn for books.
5-0 out of 5 stars How young Richard Wright got to read books from the library
Richard Wright is an African American author best known for his novel "Native Son" and his autobiographical work "Black Boy."In "Richard Wright and the Library Card" author William Miller fictionalizes a story from the latter work that tells of how Wright was inspired to become a writer.Growing up in the Mississippi of the segregated South of the 1920s, Wright was only allowed to go to school through the 9th grade. His mother had taught him to read by using the newspaper and Richard read everything he could find.At the age of 17 Wright traveled north to Memphis, where he got a job sweeping the floors and doing other jobs in the office of an optician.Wanting to check out books at the local library Wright is told he cannot do so because he is black. The only things he can read are old books and newspapers that he finds in the trash. But then, with the help of a white co-worker, Wright is able to come up with a strategy for circumventing the rules.

Living up the Street (Book Review)
4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
Living Up the Street is one of many autobiographies written by Gary Soto. It tells of the ups and downs throughout his childhood, adolescence, and even adult life. This realistic book is enjoyable to read because many people can relate to one of his experiences one way or another. Though the book it without plot, sequence, or continuity, it is interesting from the very first chapter you read. This autobiography is mainly about Gary Soto, and his poor Mexican family, growing up in Fresno, California, in the 60's and 70s'. It is fun to read because it is as if you are reading and viewing someone as they grow up and mature. Through Gary's mistakes, he's learns valuable lessons for life on his own. To give you a better understanding of the book, knowing some events that occurred in the beginning will help you know how interesting it is. In the introduction, the three main characters are presents, who also happen to be all siblings. Rick, who is 6, Gary 5, and Debra 4.Most of the beginning shows the everyday family struggles they had growing up and how when the Mom, when she was angry enough, hit them with a belt after they acted up. One of the first events which happened, is when the Mom had somewhere to go and left the children home alone unattended accidentally.Since the kids loved playing with fire, they managed to burn a few items on fire inside the house and have fun with a tomato fight also, ruining the entire living room and kitchen. This is just one of many events that took place in this novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by it's cover,fools!
I had to read this nutjob of a book with the class as a freshman this year and the cover and plot review on the back of the book made it look like bird scratch but right when you start reading you'd notice it's pretty damn good. This is on of those rare books that start o be interesting from the very beginning chapter and have small chapters so you feel optimistic about reading alot of sections of the book and feel a sense of almost finished. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
If you have been sexually abused or being sexually abused now, this book will reassure you that you are not the only person who has gone through this terrible experience. You can see from the profiles in this book that people go on to have full, meaningful lives and relationships. The people profiled are people I would like to meet and know, people who would make good friends. You can hear it in their words and see it in their pictures. There are also lots of resources in the back: books, web sites, help lines, and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable read
I have not suffered childhood abuse but was recommended this book as a source of inspiration and education on helping people to face and overcome the abuse they've suffered and suppressed for years. This book is a breath of fresh air for victims and friends interested in helping loved ones heal persistent, bottled up wounds; it provides hope and can be a great source of inspiration for all readers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for survivors

THis story is great,I loved how real and interesting it was although parts do get boring. The language used in conversation, like "gook" makes me question how much of it was true. It is pretty simple to read, but it is mind blowing to think of what this 15 year old kid went through!I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially teens in any type of counseling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Step Off Your Thrones
You people need to realize the difference between reality and liturature. This is JUST a book! Get over the fact that everything by Beatrice Sparks is just made up by an author. She's not going to tell an entire story of one person. She'd have to fantasize it a little to get people to read it. Just enjoy the book!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Imaginative Man in the History of Mankind
Walt Disney is Legend, he changed the world with entertainment unlike anybody's ever seen and ever since his death, millions have honored in Animation, filmaking and theme parks. This is his story in a 7 and up chapter book spaning from his birth in 1901 to the Laugh O' Gram film company to Mickey Mouse, to Snow White, to Disneyland, to Mary Poppins and to his passing in 1966. His life and career is remarkable, extrodonary, amazing and I think his life should be a biographical movie with either Johnny Depp or Edward Norton as Walt. I Idolize Walt Disney like no other celebrity.

4-0 out of 5 stars walt disney bio
This book is perfect for 3rd and 4th grade students. My students enjoyed the anecdotes about Walt's childhood. I liked that it was meaty enough to encourage discussion. The book also includes a section of fabulous photographs of Walt Disney and some early Disney characters. It does not include much info about the Walt Disney Company after Walt's death in the early 1960's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Walt bio for 12 to 17 years
Yet another bio on Walt Disney, this one written for young people, ages 12 and up. 96 pages in length, it tells the story of his life and career. It is fairly accurate, from a reliable publisher. If you have a child that is younger than this age group, I might suggest "Walt Disney, Young Movie Maker". It focuses more on his childhood, explaining how the events, persons, and places he lived when he was young affected his career as an adult. It really helps kids connect with him. ... Read more
