Editorial Review

"Going all the way" is still a taboo subject in young adult literature. Judy Blume was the first author to write candidly about a sexually active teen, and she's been defending teenagers' rights to read about such subjects ever since. Here, Blume tells a convincing tale of first love--a love that seems strong and true enough to last forever. Katherine loves Michael so much, in fact, that she's willing to lose her virginity to him, and, as the months go by, it gets harder and harder for her to imagine living without him. However, something happens when they are separated for the summer: Katherine begins to have feelings for another guy. What does this mean about her love for Michael? What does this mean about love in general? What does "forever" mean, anyway? As always, Blume writes as if she's never forgotten a moment of what it's like to be a teenager. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a Great Read!
I managed to miss this one when I was reading Blume as a pre-teen...and since it's around that time of the year (banned book week), I decided to find out why it is that this book gets challenged so often...and yep, I can see why! It's a realistic look at young love, about how teens feel about love and sex and how emotionally crippling a romance can feel at that age...it doesn't pull any punches and presents a realistic and compelling story of young love that could have happened to any of us.I do see why some parents might not want this in libraries...but I personally would LOVE to see teens reading this...it presents an honest, open, and responsible look at teenage love and sex.I love that this goes one step further than that "forever" feeling and examines what happens when those same teenagers who pin their whole emotional future on one other person go away to college or for summer jobs (or both)...what happens when they are exposed to new people and experiences and how that changes what they thought would be forever!
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I just read it for the fifth or sixth time. Not sure what else to say that hasn't already been said.Basically it was entertaining, honest, enlightening, touching, and the break-up scene made me cry.Who hasn't gone through that?It reads so realistically, and quickly!I was so disappointed it was so short, I really wanted to see what happened after.Maybe Blume will write a sequel about Katherine in college called "Theo called."

1-0 out of 5 stars Love Story? No. Moral book? Not even.
I have heard people say that Blume was an amazing author. I read this book and was thouroughly let down. I thought it was going to be a love story but I was wrong. It is a sex book and is completely pointless. If Blume was trying to write a moral book then she was way off target.

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood chronicle of catty classroom commentary...
I'd have to say I was rasied on Judy Blume. Her writing was the very best collection of fiction available to me as a youth.I fervently devoured her books, and Blubber one was of my favorites. The truth, honesty, and passion with which Blume writes this story showcases so many different sides of the same situation. One person being teased is not about just he/she alone. There's the instigator, who is usually a troubled person, negelcted and starved for attention, the victim, the followers, the activists, the bystanders who love a show, and those who want no part in any of it.It's hard to decide when you wanna switch your role in the game, even more difficult a decision as an adult.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cute Book
'Then Again, Maybe I won't' is basically about a boy named Tony whose family struggles with money. He lives in an apartment with his parents, his brother Ralph & his wife Angie, and his grandmother who cannot speak because of a cancer she has. Money gets even tough when Angie announces she is having a baby, and the family dosen't have enough money to raise a baby. But, all of that changes when Tony's dad hits it big with an invention he created. And suddenly, the family is moving to Rosemont. Money comes very easy than, and they move into a big house in a rich neighborhood. Where Tony meets his new neighbor who becomes his bestfriend named Joel, who likes to shoplift for fun. and Than there is Joel's older sister Lisa, who Tony thinks is the most beautiful girl he's ever seen. But lots of problems start errupting when Joel's shoplifting habit gets out of hand. And when his mom hires a maid that causes his grandmother to not come downstairs. Joel will learn that money won't solve your problems and he'll learn that growing up can be difficult.
4-0 out of 5 stars Just like "Are You There God?" for boys
As a fast read, this book is great. Boys twelve and thirteen can easily relate to Tony. Well, sort of. I live in the city, but that's just me. Anyway, the only problem I had was that is was too short. Better charachter development and possibly a more structured plot could have done the trick, but still a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Troubled protagonist, great book
I'm not a big Judy Blume fan, at least not of her writing; but I admire her amazing accomplishment. She has connected with literally millions of children and teens on subjects we *still* have trouble talking to our children about.I'm 38; it's been about 25 years since I read this; I remember. Many reviewers here don't comment on what it is the protagonist will or won't do with those binoculars, but that's the crux of the story to me -- struggling with proto-lust versus respect for others, the very same question the boy will encounter when his curiosity turns from human bodies to actual sex.Perhaps we should ask what happens if we take away the binoculars.I think it's rather silly to pretend we can or should keep our children in the dark, and anyway being a Peeping Tom is not to get a balanced impression of women. It is a violation, an objectification, and while I entirely understand him succumbing I'm intrigued by his realization it's not OK.This is to shed light not just on budding libido -- lots of novels do that -- but the moral conflict and shaky self-esteem that make growing up so hard.

5-0 out of 5 stars An engrossing YA read...
Thirteen-year-old Rachel "was born thirty-five," as her mother jokes. She's a perfectionist who's used to having everything in life go smoothly, from grades to family to flute practice. But the older Rachel gets, the more she's forced to realize that life doesn't always go as planned, no matter how hard you try. There are fights with friends, her sister Jessica's battle with cystic acne, and her brother Charles' surly, argumentative way of destroying her family's harmony.
4-0 out of 5 stars Here's To You Rachel RobinsonBy: Chelsea Naunheim
"Trouble in our family is spelled with a capital C and it has been as long as I can remember. The C stands for Charles." Imagine that you had and older brother that you couldn't stand. Well, that is exactly how Rachel Robinson feels in the book Here's To You, Rachel Robinson. The two words that Rachel uses to describe her older brother are rude and obnoxious. The genre of this book is realistic fiction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tiger Eyes
Tiger Eyes is one of my favorite books that I had read. It was about a girl named Davey and her life after her father died. Her father died by getting shot 6 times in the chest during a robbery. It was hard for Davey and her family to recover from his lost so Davey and her mother moved to New Mexico to live with her relatives. Davey lived with her aunt and uncle for a while but she didnt like it because they were too overprotected. They didnt let her do many things that she wanted to do. For example, when she wanted to learn how to ski her aunt and uncle said that she shouldnt or she will get hurt to much. She wanted to go to Drivers Ed but they said it wasnt safe and told her to stay out of the canyon because she could get hurt by a rock.It was hard for Davey to move on after her father died but even though she was forbidden to stay out of the canyon she still went there. It was her place to relax and be by herself. While she was in the caves she met a wolf. The wolf ended up becoming one of her friends because she was able to tell him anything and what was wrong and because the wolf understood how she felt.Davey had a best friend who was an alcoholic so she was always afraid hoping she wouldnt get hurt. It took time for Davey to move on but it took her time to realize that she should move on with her life for the better. The main characters in the book were Davey, Her aunt and uncle named Bitsy and Walter the wolf and Daveys mom, Gwen. The main place took place in Lost Alamos Canyons and in New Mexico such as her aunts and uncles house.

General summary
5-0 out of 5 stars From a personal point of view!
I personally loved this book! I myself have scoliosis, and have had it for almost 8 years. Throughout all 8 years, I've worn a back brace. This book hopefully taught thousands of young girls what it's actually like to wear a hard plastic contraption that you can barely move in, let alone complete function in for 23 hours out of the day! Judy Blume tastefully hinted to girls the real terrors and fears of wearing a brace to school and having people want to know all about it, which hopefully let kids see through the eyes of a scoliosis patient. I just want to give a big thanks to Blume for writing this book, and I eagerly await the movie Deenie! I can't wait to see how they show the brace, to see if it is realistic!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Deenie
This book is about a girl named Dennie who is very pretty and her mom always wanted her to be a model. One day the doctor tells her she has scoliosis and she has to wear a back brace. From then on the rest of the book is about what happens to her after she gets a brace.

Then Again Maybe I Wont is a really good book. I do not have a favorite part of this story because it is all really good. It is about a thirteen year old Tony whos dad got rich and the family moved to long Island in New York. It really intrests me when Tony falls down in the sidewalk because he has a nervous stomach because his friend stole from the store. He has to go to the docter and gets a counselor. I think that you will like it as much as meif you read it and give 5 stars just like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewish/Catholic, Teenager/Child
Eleven year-old Margaret wonders about growing up and religon in this well-written book. Margaret's feelings are portrayed delightfully in her talks to God. She is caught imbetween teenager and child, wishing for puberty to come faster. I think Judy Blume did an excellent job in creating a character much like a normal preteen. She has feelings for boys, has her best friends close to her heart, and is growing up like any other girl. She is sometimes embarassed by her parents, and just wants to become a teenager as fast as her friends are.
5-0 out of 5 stars Forever remembered
What a gem! A good book is one that we can not forget 30 years later. This novel is timeless. Readers can identify with ever aspect of what happens to Margaret as she enters the strange and intriguing journey into adolescence. There are moments of every girl's life that mark her entry into "womanhood." This book captures them all. Its innocence is beautiful as it approaches the preteen years with humor, depth and candor. What a marvelous book. Even though times have changed and readers have countless options of preteen books, this book surpasses them all.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit dated but good
I can't believe I never read this book as a girl! I really missed out. It's a bit dated now (and the hired help parts really bother me), but I can see why girls love it. I wonder if there's anything similar but more modern? ... Read more

Editorial Review

In this provocative collection, Judy Blume, the censors' favoritetarget, assembles an all-star cast of young adult writers who have themselves felt the pain of censorship. Each contributes an original short story and some highly quotable observations on their own experiences and feelings when under attack. "Where once I went to my writing without a backward glance," writes Norma Fox Mazer, "now I sometimes have to consciously clear my mind of those shadowy censorious presences." The entries range from Jacqueline Woodson's ironic story of a neighborhood's casual acceptance of arson, to Harry Mazer's touching tale of a tough kid redeemed by a little boy's adoration. Two stories are especially intriguing to connoisseurs of teen fiction: Chris Lynch's "Lie, No Lie"--a selection that appears not to have made the cut for his novel Read more

Places I Never Meant To Be is a collection of short stories written by censored writers accompanied by each writer's personal experience with censorship. While the stories are mostly good, some of them are a little 2 dimensional simply because they didn't have enough time to develop their characters and/or situations. 5-0 out of 5 stars A look at what is being censored- - good literature
I loved these short stories. In some of them, I had difficulty understanding why they would be censored. So, okay, my favorite, Paul Zindel's "Love and Centipedes," is a little insane. It was also utterly perverse and simultaneously sickening and hilarious. This one is a real treat and focus
