5-0 out of 5 stars my new favorite book
I don't know how to begin describing this book other than simply and undeniably beautiful. Greek mythology FLB style. (and since i'm obsessed with both greek mythology and FLB it was extra wonderful for me) She uses the myths of Psyche, Echo, Eurydice and Persephone and intertwines them to create one story about love and the human soul. I flew through it in a coupe of hours and cried when I finished it because I didn't want it to be over. i espessially loved all the classical mythology that it was satuarted with, it was everywhere, all these little allusions interwoven within the more obvious stories (the ones i mentioned before) and since i'm familiar with greek mythology i was able to spot and appreciate these allusions, but even if you don't know a lot about mythology you will still be able to appreciate and moved by this lovely story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag of Beauty, Flowers, Myth and Pretentious Problems, Flaws
No, this isn't a perfect book series. It can be weighed down by pretentious storylines and attempts to address serious issues. (ex. Weetzie's attempts to get a child cause major rifts worthy, for a while, of Oprah.Dirk and Duck, one of the series most prominent couples, become a spring board for heavy subjects of bigotry and AIDS.)Melodrama will sometimes take the place of real emotion.Weetzie, the main character through out the first book at least, is mostly defined as an "original person" because of her part in a punk culture that will eventually become to mainstream.Observations made in the series are often superficial.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book Ever
From the moment I laid eyes on this book I knew it would change my literary life forever. From the stunning cover to the final paragraph, this book is a delight for the mind and the senses... It's a book takes you into a magical world with brilliant and amazing characters... Also some supernatural beings, their in here too... And oddly enough it's a book that makes you hungry, hungry for delicious sounding foods and hungry for life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sparkly and Fabulous Fiction for YAs and Others
This is a book which you will either love to pieces or find intensely aggravating.I adored it.It's a compendium of books that deal with Weetzie Bat, her boyfriend Secret Agent Man, and their extended kooky family.I love the quirkiness of the characters and the lush language Block uses to describe their surroundings.I read this as an adult, but I would have been even more utterly thrilled if I had received this as a teenager when I had no idea such a world could exist. ... Editorial Review

Once upon a time, in the bubble-gum-snapping, glitter polish-wearing,lip-gloss-applying San Fernando Valley, a gentle girl named Barbie met a feisty fairy named Mab: "Maybe Mab was real. Maybe there really are girls the size of pinkies with hair the color of the darkest red oleander blossoms and skin like the greenish-white underbellies of calla lilies.... But it doesn't matter if Mab is real or imagined, Barbie thought, as long as I can see her." Mab, with her crabby commentary and no-holds-barred opinions, gives Barbie the strength she needs to face the horrors casting a shadow over her life in sunny, shimmering California. How else could Barbie survive her over-perfumed, over-tanned, overbearing stage mother, dragging her daughter to modeling agencies in the gold-plated hope of reliving her younger days as a beauty queen? Or the "cadaver-pale skin" and "fleshy mouth" of Hamilton Waverly, the "crocodile pedophile" photographer who makes Barbie feel "like the doll she had been named for, without even a hole where her mouth was supposed to be"? Mab glimmers and gabs by Barbie's side throughout her teen years as she becomes a successful fashion model, falls in love, and endures all the troubles that come along for the ride--in addition to facing the black secret of her past.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars disgusting
This book describes unwanted details. Not all teenagers are oversexed. The characters only mentor, this fairy, is portayed with the air that she is cute and lives a little on the edge and that she's really helping pull this young girl through tough times. Yet this "mentor" encourages Her to drink and have sex like your not normal if you choose to wait until marriage. Not a good book for any way no matter the age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for immature or naive kids
I've read most of the other reviews about how this book is horrible and so forth and so on because of the subject matter. While this book probably shouldn't be on a list for 12 and up, if a kid is honestly still so naive by the time they are entering highschool that they can't handle this book, maybe its good they are being exposed to the world. The book discusses sex, drinking, being molested, nothing more than is talked about on Oprah or Dr. Phil.Parents may not be ready for their 8th grader to be exposed to this, but its definitely the real world.I read this book going into the 7th grade and it didn't hurt me to read it, it just opened my eyes to a life I had never experienced. The book is well written and will suck you in if you are open minded enough to read it.

1-0 out of 5 stars depressing tripe, definately not for young adults....
this book is just plain horrible! This poor young girl, Barbie, has a wretched stage mom, and a completely uninvolved father. She's forced by mom into modeling, left alone at 12, then molested by the photograper!!! Her mom's answer to this is "life is full of problems, deal with them". Even the fairy, Mab, says horrid things to her, and encourages her at 16 to drink, smoke and have sex!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on zines out there, sereoiusly
This is my fave' book on zines ever!!!I absolutely adore this book. It's done in a format like a zine so it's not just a bunch of boring tips, it's got Photos and photocoyped picture it is the greatest. It also keeps the reader in mind, its not telling you to go out and spend $50.00 on some zine making device, it comes in mind that most zine makers are dirt poor, liek me. (sorry i'm not trying to be sterotypical)I had been plannign to write my own zine for a while but this really got me inspired. It also has a bunch of snippets from real zines that people write. That was probably my favorite part...

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!Inspiring!
I've published newsletters/zines for over 20 years, and this book open my eyes to so many new approaches. It's brilliant, inspiring, and liberating with so many "why not?" ideas.Whether you're a beginner withonly the vaguest idea that maybe you'd like a zine, or a seasoned pro whowants to recover a fresh & innovative view ofpublishing/writing/zines/newsletters... well, this book is a MUST-read. Something for everyone, from fan to writer to publisher. There's notanother book like this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars it rocked my little world
this had to be one of the best books that i have read so far on 'zines. it includes great little snippets to inspire those of us who have been working with 'zines for years to even those who are just beginning. great how-tophotos on what kind of format to put your 'zine in and a great variety ofself-published articles and essays. it was just good fun to read! ... Editorial Review

Francesca Lia Block, whose Weetzie Bat novels have often beencalled pop fairy tales, here turns to the real thing for some very differentimaginings of Snow White, Thumbelina, Cinderella, Rose Red and Rose White, andother tales. Block's stories are more resonance than retelling, fevered dreamsbehind which the outlines of the traditional tales move fitfully like figuresglimpsed now and then through a summer fog. Veiled references to Block's own LosAngeles appear in the twisty house of the seven dwarfs built into a canyon likeLaurel or Topanga, the redwood forest on a seaside cliff through which Beautytravels to her Beast, the tree-darkened canyon houses with French doors thatopen onto exuberant neglected gardens lush with irises and roses. In theseevocations Bluebeard becomes an aging blue-haired producer, Sleeping Beautypricks her arm with a heroin needle, Red Riding Hood's wolf is a lecherousstepfather, and the Snow Queen is a sex goddess who lives in a marble mansionwith her boy toy, possibly in Beverly Hills. Sensuous images enrich theselanguid and darkly ironic visions: jasmine-scented night gardens, leopardcouches with velvet pillows, luscious food flavored with mint, coconut milk, orpomegranate sauce, cool candlelit baths. As always, Block's poetic allegories ofadolescence are strikingly original and a bit dangerous, a feast forconnoisseurs of YA fiction and savvy older teens. (Ages 14 and older) Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Melodramatic but Not Terrible
Like some of Block's other work, this book's virtues include otherworldly beauty and controversial topics. Also like Block's other work, the situations have the tendency to become melodramatic.
4-0 out of 5 stars Block's almost-masterpiece
It seems clear that Francesca Lia Block is at her strongest when she adheres not only to the style of poetry, which her lush and imagistic prose usually does, but to the structure as well. For me, the multigenerational Weetzie saga has exhausted itself, and in works like "Echo" and "Nymph" she gets so distracted introducing new storylines and characters midway that she loses sight of what interested her-- or the reader-- to start with!
4-0 out of 5 stars A good read -- but unnecessarily hard to understand.
The first three or so pages of this book are what caught my attention. The way Block describes Lex's feelings for Marina through such ultimately touching literary devices struck me right through the heart. Reading this book, I could truly feel Marina&Lex's love for one another, and the pain the two of them must have been feeling without having anyone else to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Winsome Weetzie Tries Too Hard, But Largely Succeeds
I got this book as a gift from a boyfriend who loved it, and it took me forever to actually get around to reading it, even though it is very short. I finished reading it sitting on a bench in a park in Manhattan, an appropriately precious setting for a book like this. At times, and especially at the start, I found that the book was trying too hard to be different and charming, but by the end I found it did create a unique world for itself and succeeded in what it set out to do. It is certainly an important book, given the time it was written and the social situations it presents, and it serves as an excellent young adult book for those who want to read about actual aspects of life and not sugarcoated teen romances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I read this for the 2nd time a year ago and absolutely loved it. It is cool and quirky, and very enticing. Weetzie and her friends are the kind of people you would either like to be or know. This book is very short, and took me an hour to finish so if you're looking for a long book, don't expect it to be this one. I didn't really understand the whole point of it, but then again I do tend to speed through books. The lanka that comes to their door and leaves the baby is a really cool detail. This is a gothy, modern, quirky and confusing-in-a-good-way kind of book. I would recommend it to anyone. If you want to read more that Francesca has written, you should read the Cherokee Bat books. This is a 5-star book for sure!

2-0 out of 5 stars A great primer for phonies
"Weetzie and My Secret Agent Lover Man and Dirk and Duck and Cherokee and Witch Baby and Slinkster Dog and Go-Go Girl and the puppies Pee Wee, Wee Wee, Teenie Wee, Tiki Tee, and Tee Pee were driving down Hollywood Boulevard on their way to the Tick Tock Tea Room for turkey platters."

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible....
I hoped to give this writer another chance, after trying to read, but hating, I Was A Teenage Fairy. Nope-this writer is just plain bad.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Find What You Must Find, Who You Must Find..."
Francesca Lia Block's novel "Primavera" is the sequel to an earlier novel "Ecstasia," which should probably be read before continuing with this one. I hadn't read "Ecstasia", and though this didn't prevent me from grasping what was going on here, I couldn't help but feel that some of the action that takes place would have been better understood and more poignant had I previously read "Ecstasia".
1-0 out of 5 stars Gratuitous Sex and Bad Poetry
I love the Firebird imprint and was excited to read this book and "Ecstasia", its predecessor.Ugh.I barely made it through this quadmire of perverse sex and terrible poetry.I find it completely inappropriate for a teen novel (yes, I know, teens have sex) to be so overtly sexual.Every page, every paragraph practically was full of plain ol' sex, bestiality, masturbation, homosexual and bisexuality.Sure, it was couched in flowery prose and open-ended verse, but it still boils down to pornography when you take away the fluff. And, while Primavera's childish songs were marginally better than the ones in "Ecstasia", I'm still hard-pressed to imagine how anyone could sing meterless, beat-less, pointless verse like that.Never mind that it didn't rhyme, I'd like to see the tune that could follow any one of those arbitrary lines!Bleah! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars okay
it was a good book, and did keep me captivated.... but, it doesn't compare to the others by block at all..those are amazing, and this is mediocre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like an art film put into words
This is a great book. Francesca Lia Block's writing style feels fresh, although her way of narrating is slightly confusing at times. The themes and events in the story are, mostly, nothing new to the female young adult category; it's its original, out-of-the-ordinary characters and Block's style that make Violet and Claire a compelling read. I only wish I had discovered Block's books sooner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Violet and Claire
It tells a story of two girls - both who are weird in their own way. The have a friendship and help each other out. There are some sad events in the book but overall it is amazing. I read the book in about 3 days. it is really hard to put it down. I loved it and would recomend it to everyone

5-0 out of 5 stars Another triumph from Ms. Block
I have read this book as well as the first Weetzie Bat book, and it is fantastic. It really describes life in L.A very well, and is poetic and enticing without being try-hard. I did find the quirkiness to have a bit of an "off" about it, and I guess now I thought it was slightly forced. It is much more depressing than the other Weetzie book. The storyline is clever though: Cherokee's parents go away to film in South America, leaving Cherokee and her almost-sister Witch Baby with their group the Goat Guys. Cherokee gets goat hoof boots, but then they make Witch Baby's finger bleed because she got cut on the zipper. A very good book, I would recommend it to anyone. Sad yet cool, very very very good writing. A masterpiece.

4-0 out of 5 stars poetic and dreamlike
A creative story about a girl named Cherokee. She's in a band but all of the members are having self image issues making them not sound so great. She goes to her friend Coyote for help and strength for he is magical. He helps her friends find inner strength but their power corrupts themselves and endangers their lives. She comes to Coyote for more help but he can't help, it is all up to Cherokee to save her friends lives. Francesca Lia block is one of my most favorite writers for her style is so unique and poetic and this story is a good example of that.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Cherokee Bat and the Goat Guys" - my review
This being the fifth book I've read by Francesca Lia Block, I thoroughly enjoyed it as I do with all of Block's books I've read.Although, "Cherokee Bat and the Goat Guys" was definitely a little more on the depressing side compared to her other books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fluffy and Fun but Not Much Else
While Ecstasia was a fun read with an interesting, intriguing fantasy world, I found that the ending was rushed, tacked-on and ineffective. It could have been so, so much better with a little more work and a little more effort on Block's part.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Need to Look Deeper...
Ecstasia was another Block masterpiece. Most of readers I have talked to simply tell me that theres too much going on, all fluff and no substance, I'm afriad I must whole-heartedly disagree with all of you. Certainly its hard to understand at first because the text is stuffed with metaphors and other literary devices that sometimes trick the mind. I have read this book more than three times, and it only gets better. One must read between the lines with this novel. Yes, some of the meter in the songs are off, but really, does everything have to be so exact? Has it ever been with Block? The message is not instantly clear, but this is common with Block. The reader must go through a mental journey with the characters. They need to expierence the love, the want, the fear, the pain, the challenge that the members of Ecstasia do.The characters themselves are wonderful, with their faults and strenghts, and sheer will to live outside a world of age restriction. The words are beautiful, like always. The descriptions, the poetry/songs, the emotions, the everything. Once again Block makes me wish I could weild such skill with a pen.
1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible. Just Terrible.
I am probably the biggest Francesca Lia Block fan you can find. I am always gushing about her books to all my friends and recomending her to everyone. So, you can imagine my dissapointment when I discovered the utter tripe that is Ecstasia and it's companion book Primavera. These books went out of print for a reason. Because they were horrible. What I have always loved about Block's books is her ability to blend fantasy with reality, and her awe-inspiring descriptive language. These two books have removed reality altogether, and what we are left with is overdone fluff with too much metaphor and no substance. Comparing these books to masterpieces like Violet and Claire, Echo or the Dangerous Angles series is like comparing a chocolate chip cookie to eating handfuls of sugar out of the bag. ... Read more

One of kids' favorite characters in Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Bat series isWitch Baby: a tangly haired, purple-eyed girl who can curl her toes into cashewshapes. She's a bit of an outsider, more in touch with feelings and portentsthan the rest of the gang from Shangri-L.A. In Read more

Full of magic, demons, ghosts, and angels this book will hook you on the first sentence. This is a story of love and letting go. Fantasy lovers will relish in this books beauty.

5-0 out of 5 stars loved loved loved this book
Missing Angel Juan is easily my favorite Francesca Lia Block book. i loved witch baby from the moment i first read about her, way back in Weetzie Bat. i enjoyed watching her grow, and now her story of love, lonlieness, and redemption takes center stage, in this beautifully written book. her feelings of loss over angel juan's departure are easy to relate to, as is her restlessness in a city of dangerous angels. her exodus to new york is both transcendant and haunting, and left me both satisfied and shaken. perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the book is the character Cake, if only because such a thing could really happen. in all, it's one of the best books i've ever read, though far too short, and it left me screaming out for more, though grateful that i'd had the privelege of reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tale of Witchbaby and Angel Juan
Another Block book that comes in the middle of her Weetzie Bat series, this story focuses on WitchBaby and Angel Juan, two teenagers in love. There are tears, fear, love, romance, sex, drugs, and alcohol in this story, all of which are combined into the most magical plot you will have ever laid eyes on. These two lovers run through New York City, having grown up in Los Angeles, and find many adventures. As you read the Weetzie Bat series, this puts different perspectives into view. Enjoy -- you won't regret reading it. ... Read more

it was a good book, and did keep me captivated.... but, it doesn't compare to the others by block at all..those are amazing, and this is mediocre.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved it, very introspective
If you know you LOVE Francesca Lia Block's work, DO NOT go about reading this book first.I did, and got a twisted perception compared to what I think of her now. This book is very raunchy and deep, and you MUST be acquainted with her writing style before reading this book.It is, though, a splendid, dark book.Weetzie Bat should be the first book that anyone reads of Block's, for it is simple and delightful.Block exhibits her versatality in this book and has a knack for describing reality, as lurid as it is.
