Editorial Review

In a challenging new novel, Jennifer Armstrong reveals the heart of a young woman in the midst of the U.S. Civil War. Protagonist Mairhe Mehan is an Irish immigrant trying to piece together the fragments of her family's life in war-torn Washington, D.C. A quiet man with a mane of flowing white hair helps her understand the dreams that fuel battle and pain. (Later, she learns that this man is the poet Walt Whitman.) Truly, this is historical fiction in a most uncommon sense. Armstrong's writing is so vivid, so heartfelt, that the turmoil of the Civil War rises again in the pages of this slim, eloquent book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book
_The Dreams of Mairhe Mehan_ is a haunting and lyrical book about Mairhe Mehan, a young Irish girl living in the slums of Washington DC during the Civil War.Mairhe's family has been separated; her brother is off to fight for the Union, and her father pines for his native Ireland as his mental capacity deteriorates. The story is told through Mairhe's dreams, a poetic mix of Irish lore and the stark(but somehow dreamy) reality of the war.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Historical Romance
This is a great book. I read it in about two hrs and i could not put it done! It opened the door to other great historical romances like Time Enough For Drums by Ann Rinaldi which is a must read. One of the best things about this book is that it is unpredictable. You know that she is going to end up with her sweetheart. But you really can't see how everything will work out. Great Great Great. The author really knows what she is doing!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Series.....
My sister was the one who got these books as a box set for her birthday, but I was the one who read the whole set back to front [this was the first box set which only included the first three books .... it was a while ago]. The Literature is about a grade six level, the stories closer to grade nine, but they DO give young women a first-person introduction to the major points of American History.5-0 out of 5 stars Ann has to choose between her sweetheart and family.
Ann of the Wild Rose Inn is a heartwarming story about finding true love and almost losing it. Roger is the british sailor Ann loved but couldn't have for the sake of her family. But in the end everything works out. ... Read more

Editorial Review

When World War II began, Irene Gutowna was a 17-year-old Polish nursing student. Six years later, she writes in this inspiring memoir, "I felt a million years old." In the intervening time she was separated from her family, raped by Russian soldiers, and forced to work in a hotel serving German officers. Sickened by the suffering inflicted on the local Jews, Irene began leaving food under the walls of the ghetto. Soon she was scheming to protect the Jewish workers she supervised at the hotel, and then hiding them in the lavish villa where she served as housekeeper to a German major. When he discovered them in the house, Gutowna became his mistress to protect her friends--later escaping him to join the Polish partisans during the Germans' retreat. The author presents her extraordinary heroism as the inevitable result of small steps taken over time, but her readers will not agree as they consume this thrilling adventure story, which also happens to be a drama of moral choice and courage. Although adults will find Irene's tale moving, it is appropriately published as a young adult book. Her experiences while still in her teens remind adolescents everywhere that their actions count, that the power to make a difference is in their hands. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Daja Vu All Over Again.
This is a true account by an Austrian child psychologist who helped to secure a safe environment for some of the multitudes of children during Hitler's Holocaust. In 1939, a group of Polish and Russian doctors had purchased some French castles to use as combined school and orphanage. Called OSE (Organization of Scientists and Educators), they attempted to save these young children of the parents in concentration camps. It is the story of survival, not of all; those who did survive bring to mind the story of the Von Trapp family as depicted in the movie, 'The Sound of Music," but multiplied many-fold.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding
An amazing and spellbinding tale. She risked her life many, many times. Irene Gut definitely had guts!

5-0 out of 5 stars Little-Known Polish Aid to Jews During the Holocaust
There is an unfortunate and unfair stereotype about Poles not doing enough for Jews during World War II. This book helps set the record straight by first showing that Poles were also victims of the Germans. In addition, unlike in other German-occupied countries, Poles were given the death penalty for the slightest aid to Jews. Despite all this, the heroine of this historical account risked her life every day to hide a group of Jews right under the nose of a German officer whom she was forced to serve. Absolutely thrilling!

5-0 out of 5 stars Emily of the Wild Rose Inn
I thought this was an excellent book. Emily has growing feelings for the son of a slave owner called Blount, but her adopted sister, Lucy, falls in love with Moses, Blount's family slave. Emily must decide whether to help Lucy or betray her. I thought it was an incredibly moving book and Blount seemed so caring and good-looking that it was almost not real. But the author managed to make Blount real, along with the rest of the characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story
This book was great. It was interesting to read and showed you what it was really like where Emily lived. This goes back to 1858 near the time when slavery was common in the United States. A rich family from Virgina stay at the Wild Rose Inn with their slave, Moses. Emily knows slavery is wrong and wants to help Moses; but her growing feelings for their son, Blount, hold her back. I definetly recomend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful
This book was great. It was short, yet sweet, and eloquent. It is hard how to describe how well the author used the english language in this book.It is an awaking, as the title suggests. It is romantic and charming, yet self-empowering.There is little more to say other than try to prove to you how touching the book is and, especially if you like historical fiction, how nessesary it is to read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lovely story
_Mary Mehan Awake_ is the poignant sequel to _The Dreams of Mairhe Mehan_.Mairhe, who was a nurse during the Civil War, now goes by her American name, Mary, and she has left Washington DC work for a bird photographer in New York.Mary is beginning to emerge from the numbness that was a defense against the horrors of the war.The romance between Mary and Henry, a musician deafened by his stint in the war, is sweet and well done.

3-0 out of 5 stars Umm....okay.
Many of the past previewers wrote about Mary becoming more human, and the words of the book told you that, but I never felt like I knew enough of Mary to really tell how much she changed. 4-0 out of 5 stars This book was very sad but good.
This book was very good, but in the beginning it was a little bit boring. Around the middle of the book, it started to improve. I liked this book, but I liked "Emily of the Wild Rose Inn" better. Now, that book got straight to the point. The Bridie book was good, but it was disappointing at the end. She could have stayed in Massachusetts and *TRY* to fit in. But I think she left because she couldn't stand the people of Mass. I won't blame her... Will Handy was infatuated with Bridie, she liked him too, but Will's old mother stopped him from leaving to Canada with Bridie. You know what though? I think they won't last, because she was so different from him. Overall, this was a good book. I recommend that you read it on a rainy day, since it's a depressing book. :)

But 10 long years went by before Bridie finaly came to Massachusetts, and she's no longer a child, no longer able to adapt to her surroundings as easily. But Massachusetts itself isn't so bad. It's the people there, the laws they made. Bridie is a Catholic, and in Massachusetts you can only be a Puritan. Can Bridie build a home for herself in the harsh new land, and keep her religion alive within herself? Or will she have to leave the family she was just reuinited with to find a home elsewhere, where she can be true to her religion? ... Read more

I did not like the book because it was confusing to read, they went back and forth from when Susannah was a little girl, then a grandmother. I would recommend this to an older boy or girl. But I was happy they both made it to where the wanted to go, and wasn't killed or taken back to Virginia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Steal Away
My book that I am presenting to you is Steal Away. StealAway is about two women named Susannah and Bethelehem.Susannah's uncle owns Bethelehem because she is a slave. Susannah and Bethelehem are trying to get to Vermont from Virginia. On foot trying to get away from war.Susannah's uncle died. On their way to Vermont they meet somebody and they suggest that they should go to Canada. The main characters in this story are Susannah and Bethelem. Both of them I think are really brave, caring, and strong women. I think they're strong because they knew that they didn't have any transportation except their feet and they took advantage of it. I would recommend this book to people wholike adventurest books about the Civil War. I think if someone who did like books like that would say that this is the best book they ever read in their life.

I thought this was an excellent book.It combined romance, mystery, and humor to keep me interested page after page.Plus, I learned a few things about Prohibition and the Jazz Age.I would definately recommend thisbook, along with the others in the 'Wild Rose Inn' series.
