Editorial Review

War threatens the Four Lands, and Shannara's only hope lies in Penderrin Ohmsford, but it's a dreadfully slim hope. To save his world, Pen must restore his aunt, the former Ilse Witch, to her rightful position as High Druid of Shannara. But first Pen must free his aunt Grianne from the Forbidding: the world of the demons. To have the slightest chance of freeing her, he must find the mystical tree called the Tanequil, and somehow craft a talisman from its wood. But Shadea a'Ru, the treacherous usurper of his aunt's position, will do anything to stop Pen--and she has already captured Pen's parents and forced them to reveal their son's whereabouts. Sen Dunsidan, the monstrous Prime Minister of the Federation, has armed his greatest airship with a horrible new weapon. And Pen is just a boy, accompanied on his dangerous quest by only a Dwarf, a young Elf, and a blind Rover girl.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Middle novel of a Terry Brooks story
Terry Brooks has made a career out of a complicated fantasy world where magic rules as well as politics and inter-racial warfare keeps the balance of good versus evil in a constant state of flux. In all of his books there are several steady components: The Ohmsford family through all of its generations is imbued with a strong strain of magic that they are regularly called upon to exercise even if they do not wish to do so.
3-0 out of 5 stars series in decline
Although I loved the first Shannara series, something of the magic has departed the more recent books. Picking up where Book I left off, Tanequil tells the stories of what has happened to the world since Griane Ohmsford's betrayal. As her enemies work to solidify their rule, her family tries to find her. Spurred by the words of the King of the Silver River, her nephew, Pen, searches for the Tanequil, a magical tree, somewhat like the Ellcrys, to craft a dark wand so he can journey into the Forbidding to rescue her, but he did not count to cost before setting out, and it is dear. Meanwhile, Griane's plight is more desperate than she can imagine. Now the prisoner of the Straken Lord, she is forced to call upon her own evil to survive, risking losing herself in the process.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great story with some re-used ideas
I'm definitely an avid Brooks fan, and this book is not a disappointment. There are some very similar elements between Tanequil and the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara series (Read more

Editorial Review

World-renowned fantasist Ray Bradbury has on several occasions stepped outside the arenas of horror, fantasy, and science fiction. An unabashed romantic, his first novel in 1957 was basically a love letter tohis childhood. (For those who want to undertake an even more evocative look at the dark side of youth, five years later the author would write the chilling classic Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Charming Classic Of Bygone Americana
This book is Bradbury in top form. Although not my absolute favorite title by this author, I have found a lot of joy over the years in re-reading this little book that I first picked up off a school library shelf when I was eight. It's obvious Bradbury was writing a story set in the time and place of his own childhood "as it should have been" and it makes me wonder if given time I'll think back on my own youth in similar terms. When I was little, after I read this book, all anyone had to do was say, "Watch out for Lonely One" referring to the killer who stalked Green Town's ravine at night and I was good and scared. Heck, that probably works today, too. From its unique May-December romance to its protagonist who becomes that one soul in a million to truly understand that precious gift of what it means to be alive, Dandelion Wine is simply wonderful. Read this book and travel back with the national treasure who is Ray Bradbury to the delightful world of the fantasy-powered Midwest of the 1920's (as it should have been).

5-0 out of 5 stars Believe & Partake!or The Meaning of Life, a la Bradbury
I first read Ray Bradbury's miracle of a book, Dandelion Wine, when I was 16, and I have read it every year since.Over time I continue to gain a deeper appreciation for these lovely, strange, often magical vignettes (more properly parables, each one with a little implied moral) that explore the nature of happiness, the magic of love and, above all, what it means to be alive. To me, the overarching intent of the book is to remind all us adults that:
5-0 out of 5 stars Not really for children.
Its protagonist may be a child, but this novel is not really suitable for a thrill-seeking, modern juvenile audience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Locomotion
Locomotion is a book about an eleven year old boy and his life. The boys name is Lonnie Collins Motion. His parents died when he was 7 years old in a fire and him and his sister are in two different homes but not to far from each other. The whole book is poems in a notebook his teacher gave to him. He visits his sister every once in a while and just knows her foster mom doesn't want a boy to live with her. There are many things that go on in his life and he deals with it by writing it in a poem.

3-0 out of 5 stars I GUESS THIS IS A GOOD BOOK
Locomotion is a story about a kid that wrote a book in poetry-form. He talks about stories of his mom and his family. This is a sad story. Some of the stories talk about his friend or classmate that is disabled. I liked this story because it's written in poetry-form and that he talks about a lot of poems in this story. I think that you should read this book if you like poems. But it doesnt have so much action.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overrated Short Book By Matt Pieper
Locomotion, by Jaqueline Woodson is an overrated poem-based fiction book about an eleven year old boy named Lonnie.Lonnie is going through some tough times. His parents died in a fire and now Lonnie has to live with Miss Edna. His sister Lili is his sister, but she was also separated to a different foster parent.Lonnie has three main friends, Eric Lamont, and Angel.Lonnie also has to learn poetry because his teacher Miss Marcus is teaching the class about poetry and now Lonnie wants to tell his story in poetry format.I think this book should be for people ages 10 and up.I also think that this book is an easy to read fiction book and it's a short one too.

5-0 out of 5 stars War Games
Another exciting installment in this series from the outrageously creative and slightly warped mind of Garth Nix, where Lord Arthur, Rightful Heir of the Architect etc. etc. finds himself drafted into the Glorious Army of the Architect under the command of the highly strung Sir Thursday.Starting at the bottom, Arthur changes his name to Ray, and undergoes basic training in weaponry and warfare before being led off to battle.
5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I love his books (sabriel...) i've read all his books so far they are wonderful. LOVE IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly life changing experience
Sir Thursday is a great adventure book.It has many battles with Nithlings a type of creature made of "nothing". A type of liquidy material that can be enriched into almost anything you want it to and is hazardous to the touch. Arthur Penhaligon was a normal boy until about noon on Monday when he found the key to the lower reaches then was cast into the house a secondary realm. The will (an item that is very wise and was made by the architect) has chosen Arthur to be the rightful heir to the throne. TheArchitect is the God of the house and made everything. She had two sons Superior Sundayand the Piper.Sunday betrayed Piper with his minion Saturday when they threw him into nothing. He should have died but he didn't and no one knows why. But if you like action books with great plots you should buy this book because it has both.

5-0 out of 5 stars NO i am not a kid, i just haven't purchased anything yet- this book was amazing!!
Some of the other reviews said this book had no plot...blahblahblah stuff like that, But i disagree this book had a plot, though some parts were very predictable, other's were also suprising. Lizzie, the main character was not as babble mouthed as you would expect, but still spilt some secrets like you wouldn't believe. This is definitely quality work that i had no problem with except one thing; This book looks like a book for teenagers, and easily could be mistaken as one of meg's books for girls, which, with that last scene and all(sexual content)is obviously not meant to be. So teenagers reading this review, beware this is not written for younger sociaty. Of meg's books, this one falls in the middle of being the best and worst, because some of her other books are better and some are not as good. If you are looking for a cute romance, this is the one for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book!
I absolutely loved this book as I love all Meg Cabot books. This one was hilarious and very informative. I loved the thesis and quotes at the beginning of each chapter.
4-0 out of 5 stars 4 Stars Because it was Fun
I think it should be noted that this is an ADULT book.I think the cover and the overall tone of the book may lead some younger people who enjoy her teen reads to be drawn to this, but this is definitely NOT a ya book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Show Way and Soonie's story
Soonie's family made Show Way quilts, ones that would show illiterate slaves the way to freedom. In this Newberry Honor book, Jacqueline Woodson takes children on a trip into the past back to the days of her great-granmother Soonie and beyond into the days of slavery.Readers will read about slavery, the days after the slaves were freed, the fight for equal rights during the sixties to present day to when the author's daughter was born. As a white person, I struggled a bit with the language used in places, but enjoyed the story that told of generations of black women and their strength and courage and love for their families.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must own
My seven year old borrowed Show Way from our neighborhood library. He read it to me and I immediately said this is a book that we must own for our children's library shelf.I told a friend about it also.It is a great read for story times at family reunions. It's a book of celebration, courage and freedom. After reading it to my three year old, I lifted my baby girl up and told her "I love that girl-child up"! What a wonderful read!, and children learn about the tradition of quilts and how they showed the way to freedom.
5-0 out of 5 stars Folk history at its finest
Jacqueline Woodson has created another powerful, thought-provoking, personal yet universal story.Combined with Hudston Talbott's equally poignant and vibrant illustrations, Show Way is by every measure a most worthy Newbery Honor winner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Work !!
Mr Davis does it again.I have always been a fan of his work and this book is a good intro to mythology of a lot of countries. His description as always is easy to follow and once in a while he would throw in a couple of funny remarks that stay with you.On this book you can see that Mr Davis has done a lot of research and it has paid off.The only problem that i had with this book is that once in a while he reaches conclusions that i dont agree with.Sometimes i believe that he stretching these conclusions a little too far.For example he says that the tale of Pandora's Box points to women as the ones that bring suffering to the world much as the Book of Genesis in the Biblie blames Eve for all the suffering in the world.I think that conclusion is just plain wrong as there is no indication of the Biblie blaming women of anything except desobedience. He also says that Adan had a second wife.Again, this conclusion is just too far fetched since no such person ever existed.Besides these conclusions the book is really good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Accessible Overview of Mythology
Davis' "Don't Know Much About" series has always been marked by the author's conversational and breezy style as opposed to more dry, pedantic treatment of the subjects. That tone is continued here in his view of world mythology. Instead of aiming at being a comprehensive overview of the subject, he chooses to highlight the "you should know" topics - much like a Cliff Notes for a whole course. Often times the word Mythology only brings up images of Greek and Roman gods in people's minds. What Davis does well is to bring us back into the other myths of the ancient world - from Egypt and Mesopotamia, showing how these myths intermingled with other cultures and influenced, among other things, possibly several stories in the Bible. Davis continues around the world highlighting the stories of the Celts, the Norse, Indians, Chinese and Japanese. He comes up a bit short in his discussion of Sub-Saharan Africa and Native American mythology mainly because it is such a diverse topic involving not one dominant culture, but rather hundreds of individual cultures, each with their own views of the world. So while I would applaud him for including recognition of these areas, Davis set himself up with a task far beyond his current project that may leave the reader unsatisfied in these areas.Overall a good book to get a quick overview and introduction to names, stories and history of various cultures and how stories that are still familiar today came into being.

5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful and concise presented study of the world of historical mythology

5-0 out of 5 stars A 1-day read!
I was at my usual trip to the library, shuffling through the books, and this book caught my eye. I picked it up, and read the inside, which honestly, I think was lamely put. Well, I took the book home and started to read it. By the third chapter, I was hooked. It was interesting, and what really was neat to me, was how it sounded like an actual 13 year old was telling the story!
1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time
I read this book for school a while ago, and from the moment I started I knew that it was going to be a long, long, long read. The characters in the book were a bunch of annoying brats that seemed far too full of themselves to actually exist. The plot was also terriable for the fact that it was almost as if there wasn't one. A girl goes looking for her mother (which the outcome is clearly easy to spot since the book puts too much of it's time on the buildup of"Whats going to happen?")
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply put: Beautiful.
This book is truly one the best that I have ever had the privilege to read. It flows from one chapter tot he next, never skipping a beat, with vibrant characters that I can certainly identify with: the irritating friend, the homey grandparents, etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars My review for Slam
The book slam was ok but all he talked about was how hard his math was, how good he is at basketball, how he's going to make it into the nba, how he lives in the ghetto, and how much he likes his wannabe girlfriend. I like basketball and all but when he gives you every detail about what is going on in the games I get bored and want to read something else. I think he talked himself up to much and he seems in the book like he's selfish, and isn't as good as he thinks he is. The author did a good job describing literary techniques and the setting though, I had a picture in my head the whole time just like a movie. I would recommend this book to a 10 to 12 year old boy who likes basketball.

4-0 out of 5 stars slam
Slam is a pretty good book. You are probably wondering why the title is Slam; Slam is the title because of the main character, Greg "Slam" Harris. Love basketball? Its almost what you could categorize as a must read. While reading this book I could almost imagine myself out on the court. Yes, this book is long, but if you have to read a book as an assignment, you should definitely read this one.
2-0 out of 5 stars How do I feel about this book
I think that this book was really boring. I mean the book did not catch my attention and it was not really interesting to me. It was okay but i think that this book should be for younger middle aged kids to read like 12-14. Teenages theses days want to read about more intersting things that excite them. So in my own oppinion i think that the book is for young kids and not teenagers and it was not the best book that i have read ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Alice in Wonderland meets the Twilight Zone.
Take Isaac Asimov's brain, Stephen King's wind, blend in a vacuum and you get a Greg Bear novel.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well Developed Tale of Exploration and Future Possibilities
This story describes the sudden appearance of an asteroid into the Solar system during the Cold War.The US (and allies) sends teams of scientists and soldiers to explore and secure the asteroid, which is hollow and filled with cities and advanced technology. It turns out that the original creators of the asteroid are descendants of Earthmen, and the explorers find the historical record of a cataclysmic war that will take place several years after the appearance of the asteroid after which humanity will be reduced to barbarism. This is really only the beginning of the story, and it turns out that there is more to the asteroid than meets the eye, of course, as forces both internal and external begin to shape the destinies of the characters. The story proceeds along several different threads and follows the events from several perspectives. There are definitely some similarities between this book and Clarke's `Rendezvous with Rama', although the exploration stage really only presents a minor subtext to the plot in the first 100 pages or so.This story lacks the gravitas and mystery of `Rama'; it is not a story that one will remember forever. It is probably more comparable to the Giants Novels of James Hogan or the work of Hal Clement. There is a little bit of space opera, some contact with greatly advanced civilizations and `aliens' (that are well fleshed out and have an interesting political and cultural system described in detail), bureaucratic intrigue, and political maneuvering. There are several things I really liked about this story.Bear makes good use of basic physics combined with some speculative ideas about time travel, alternate universes, and the space-time continuum. The characters are realistic and refreshingly well-developed (something lacking in most sci-fi), and the plot is complex and well thought-out.There are a few negatives as well, however. This book was written during the Cold War (1985), and the rivalry between the US and the Soviet Union is crucial to the development of the story. This gives the tale a definite dated feel. Many of the Russian characters are cliched characatures and not particularly imaginative.Second, this is a fairly long novel (500+ pages), and the ending is somewhat weak with many unresolved threads, presumably to leave space for the sequel.I felt a bit cheated at the end (although I liked the story enough to buy the sequel).Overall, this is a solid, if not uniquely outstanding novel. This is my first novel by Greg Bear, so I can't compare it to his other work, but I think that anyone who likes hard sci-fi (such as Hogan or Clement) will find this a worthwhile tale.

2-0 out of 5 stars Try Greg Egan instead
If you like hard science fiction, I would recommend trying Permutation City and Diaspora by Greg Egan instead. Another book more similar to Eon but far more readable is "Rendezvous with Rama" by Arthur C. Clarke (not the sequels). Greg Bear wasn't able to convey the sense of wonder of the situation he describes, in fact, sometimes I have found very hard to understand his descriptions, as others reviewers say (not because of their technicallity, but simply because they are sometimes very convoluted). Also, part of the plot seems outdated, be aware that this book was published in 1985 (USSR, Cold War...). I haven't been able to read past a third of the book, so this review may be a bit biased ;) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Remarkable Book!
I was given this book by a friend at work and she insisted that I read it. Once I started the book I just couldn't put it down. I found Codi's story to be compelling and as the layers unfolded I couldn't help but cry as I realized what this girl must have went through. This book shows the steps Codi goes through to realize that she has been loved all along and it just took opening herself up to figure that out. This was one of the best books I have read in awhile and I highly recommend it and I cant wait to read more books by this author!
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth rereading
I first read Animal Dreams ten or twelve years ago, and at the time put it on my "read again someday" list.I just went back to it, and found that decision to be wholly right--this is a lovely novel that bears rereading.I find that I want to quote specific sentences here to explain why Animal Dreams is so good, but there are so many that are either brilliantly insightful or wonderfully funny that I don't know how to choose. But here's one from the first page, as a father watches his daughters sleep:"Dr. Homer Noline holds his breath, trying to see movement there in the darkness, the way he's watched pregnant women close their eyes and listen inside themselves trying to feel life."Kingsolver has a keen eye for detail and uses figurative language the way it should be used:not only to create an image but also to create a deeper resonance.
5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful, beautiful, beautiful

5-0 out of 5 stars Twentyyearsof reading her writings
Louise Erdrich has the ability to capture simple truths that make life significant. She can also make the most unbeleivable scenes (such as the Mother throwing her baby to the wolves) seem totally sane.I think LOVE MEDICINE is a book that will be a classic always. This may not be that good but read it and see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very enthralling and captivating!
This is the first fiction book I have read in years and am so glad I stumbled upon it!I would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to escape into a journey that will not soon be forgotten.Like a dream remembered upon waking, it stays with you.Kudos to the authoress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, deep and haunting Erdrich novel
Erdrich really gets into a surreal feel with her writing in this book in a way that engages the reader from the start. There are so many layers to the levels the reader can learn from, and this truly is a teaching story on multiple levels.I finished reading with a haunted and disturbed feeling, and over time, it evolved into a template for how to understand impact of decisions, choices, passions and the past. There is an amazing amount of wisdom in this book.In contrast to other Erdrich novels where there is a depth of sorrow contrasted with at times, near explosive humor, this novel has less of the wry humorous stories, but it more than makes up for it in her ability to utilize poetic and descriptive language in such a way that she ought to receive many, many awards.I haven't felt this way reading a novel since Hemingway.Truly beautiful. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great overall, almost excellent if not for...
The book is a good read with the short stories and the relevance to today's world is striking is some of those stories. The stories are mainly from the late 40's and early 50's and show a haunting look at what could be.There are, however, some stories that do drag and really don't hold the readers attention, but, thankfully, these stories are few and far between.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Illustrated Tale . . .
This book is simply amazing!I
