5-0 out of 5 stars Just WoW!
I usually don't read realistic fiction but this is one heck of a book! It is such and intense story but told in a way that makes you feel engaged rather than sad and depressed. It is a story of growing up and journeying. Dicey is still one of my favorite characters and I read it 8 years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Homecoming"
The Tillerman's mother abandoned Dicey, and her three younger siblings, James, Sammy, and Maybeth in a mall parking lot one afternoon. After endless hours of waiting for her mother, Dicey configures a plan. Dicey decides they must travel to her Cousin Cilla in Bridgeport, Connecticut and see if she will take them in as her family. Dicey will do anything to keep her family from getting separated in Foster Care, even if it means the Tillermans must hike miles in the scorching sun, with very little food, and a only a map to guide them. After many days of traveling through different cities in all kinds of weather, the Tillermans reach her Cousin Celia's home, only to find she has died. Cousin Celia's daughter, Eunice, takes them under her wing, feeling it is her duty. The Tillerman's feel uncomfortable living with Cousin Eunice. They escape and make their last journey to Chesapeake Bay, full of hope, to her grandmother's farm. The last relative they know of.

The romantic horror genre reaches a new level of complexity in this novel, which manages to be simultaneously thought-provoking and blood-curdling. Kerry becomes the unwitting accomplice of an attractive, mysterious boy on the run, only to discover that he is a vampire. Can she trust her feelings for someone so alien to her? Or has she been "seduced by the glamour of evil"? An ALA Best Book for Young Adults, this was called "a tingly thriller" by Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Opinion of a College Student
While reading through the reviews of for this book, I've come across quite a few really negative ones. The main reasons seem to be because of the simplistic writing and the lack of concrete vampire details. I strongly disagree with those reviews and will have to add my vote to the much greater number saying what a wonderful book this is. I first read this book six years ago when I was 14, and loved it. Just recently I came across it again, and my love has become, if possible, greater. After reading quite a few Anne Rice books since this one, I think I prefer the simple writing displayed here to that of Anne Rice. Don't get me wrong, I love Anne Rice's books passionately, but I don't much like being interrupted at the climax of the story for details of a rain forest for five pages. The writing in CotN is easy to read, but the author did not sacrifice wonderful writing for the simplicity presented. The imagery is still strong, and her characters are brilliantly portrayed. That is in fact probably what I love most about the book: the characters. The plot is interesting, and the dialog is realistic and witty. As for the lack of vampire details; that is part of what gives the book its edge. As the reader you're learning about this world of vampires along with the main character and are forced to keep guessing just like her. The ending does leave a little to be desired, but its realistic and rewarding in its own right.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book is one of the better teen vampire books I have found, which are really hard to find!Loved it... if you liked this one, you should certainly like The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause.I'd say those books are really closely related, but like all books, a little different.I read it in a day and I really enjoyed it!Um... I'd like to say more but I'll end up spoiling it for you!
5-0 out of 5 stars A great vampire book
Wow this book kept me on the edge of my seat and I wanted to stay up all night and read it. A fantastic mix of vampires, action and romance.

5-0 out of 5 stars An AWESOME book!
Heir Apparent is one of the greatest books I have ever read, and believe me when I say I've read literally thousands of books! (and I'm only 14)Anyway, this is a very realistic book. I felt like I was right next to Janine. The author does a great job of being descriptive, but not overloading. (Pardon the pun!)The plot was very imaginative and different.
5-0 out of 5 stars Heir Apparent
The Book Heir Apparent has many things to love, but my top three favorite things are, one the setting, which is in the future. Second I like the sarcasm, which is funny to mix with all the action. And third I like the characters, which have many different personalities. Heir Apparent is one of the best books ever.

Near death experiences can be very dangerous for a fourteen year-old girl. Giannine Bellesario received a fifty dollar gift certificate for her birthday from her father to Rasmussem Gaming Center. When Giannine began playing the virtual reality game `Heir Apparent,' the people from CPOC cane in and damaged all of the games, so that Giannine wasn't able to be disconnected from her game until she completed it because it would fry her brain. So as Giannine was playing the game, Nigel Rasmussem form the Gaming Center cane into the game and told Giannine about what happened and that she has as many lives as she need to complete the game, but she was on a time limit. The longer she plays, the more damage to her brain... in real life. So Giannine kept playing the game and tried not to freak out. In the game, Giannine's objective was to be crowned as King, and to do that she had to complete many other objectives, like: not killing herself, fighting off the Barbarians, fighting off the peasants, finding the missing treasure, finding the missing magical crown, killing the dragon, and making the Queen like her. After Giannine finally completed all of the missions, she was crowned as King. As soon as that happened, they disconnected her from the game and Giannine was able to regain her health. This was a very excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Because We All Get BOMBALOO
I think this is a psychologically adept book that strikes a good balance between message and entertainment. The young narrator talks about how she's generally a good person: "...I'm a really good kid. I smile a lot because usually I'm happy, and I give excellent hugs." She behaves even when her brother knocks over her blocks.5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend
My 2-1/2 year old daughter loves this book. It gave us a way to talk about out-of-control emotions. Now when she gets mad, I can ask her, "Are you bombaloo?" The question focuses her attention -- and she either acknowledges that she's mad or she shifts her mood, and says "I'm not bombaloo!"and laughs. The book has wonderful illlustrations. The writer communicates in a direct way that young children can understand.

1-0 out of 5 stars a big disappointment
I really enjoyed Homecoming, Dicey's song, and A Solitary Blue, so I was expecting to enjoy the story of one of my favorite characters. Boy was i disappointed. It started out with hope, but after she was kicked out of the dance camp i found her prejudiced, quick to judge, and paranoyed.

The book I read is called Come a Stranger. It is about an African American girl named Mina.Mina loves to do ballet and she even gets a scholarship to go to a really good dance academy over the summer.Mina has a blast and can't wait to go back next summer. In fact she can't stop thinking about it and her friends are getting mad, because they think she's bragging quite a bit. Next summer she goes there and seems to have trouble doing easy things.Later the instructor takes her aside and tells her she is growing up uncoordinated and must leave now.A man named Tamer Shipp, the summer minister, comes to pick her up and they soon become good friends.Tamer tells Mina of a man called Bullet Tillerman and how prejudice Bullet was.Next year at school a girl named Dicey Tillerman is there and Mina tries and later succeeds to be her friend.Mina also takes up tennis and they must advance her because she's so good. That is my summery of Come a Stranger.
5-0 out of 5 stars strong heroine, good book
Mina Smiths is a young African American girl who hopes to become a dancer. Although talented, when she begins puberty, she finds the once-easy moves difficult, and she is sent home from an all-white summer ballet camp for this reason. Through her friendship with a black neighbor and his family, she begins to grapple with issues of racism as well as coming of age. In school, she befriends a white girl, whose family has ties to her neighbor's past. Mina is a strong, assertive heroine whose triumphs and struggles are interesting and endearing.

    4-0 out of 5 stars A Brother's Perspective
Sons From Afar, by Cynthia Voigt was another huge success. In this particular book, the main characters are James & Sammy. James was the kind of person who wished to find out about his lost father because of his feelings in high school on how "being a dork isn't going to get you anywhere." He believes that since all the boys his age had fathers, they were all taught how to catch a ball ever since they were little. Although James had good grades, he wants to find a sport he could play well on. For Sammy, he's like the opposite of James. He's very active: participating in tennis and always being full of energy. When Sammy learned that James wanted to find their father, he didn't hesitate. He even entered a bar that says "no kids allowed" just to find his father! This was how Cynthia Voigt made this book interesting: describing the differences and problems of two brothers that can also happen in our every day lives. On every single page, there is excitement and adventure to make the reader satisfied on what he or she is reading. I have enjoyed this book, and this book will be an excellent choice for people who want to read about young adult fiction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I thought thatthis book was really good.It really held my attention and was a quick read. It wasn't as good as Homecoming and Dicey's Song were, but it was still really good nd definatly worth reading. It's about Sammy and James going to find their father.I have to say, the plot is a little strange but the book itsself is still really really good. It's one of my favorites.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brotherhood
In another of the Tillerman series, Cynthia Voight explores the relationship between James and Sammy as each attempts to discover his inner self and who he wants to be. As the brothers search for a long missing father they grow to understand and admire each other. Although the plot bogs down in detail at times, there is enough action to keep the reader turning pages through to the finish. Not as captivating as the first two books in the series.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
Poor Jeff Greene. He's saddled with a flighty, mercurial mother who leaves him at age seven and vacillates from intense neediness to indifference. His father, called the Professor, is also distant and unavailable. Eventually, however, he reaches out and makes a genuine connection with his son, unlike the perpetually unlikable mother who's only there when it's convenient for her.
5-0 out of 5 stars dramatic heart lifter
At only the age of seven years,Jeff Greene finds a note on the counter in his mothers scrawl revealing that she had left him with his father, The Professor. After years of feeling alone he receives a message from melody(his mom)saying that she wanted him to come visit her in charleston for the summer. By fall he has returned and writes her every month only to find the mail box empty every time he checks until summer comes along again, and he has an oppertunity to visit her once more...but something is different about her...or was he just under an illusion on they're first encounter. This book was the best book i have ever laid eyes on. Read this sad, suspenseful novel. I promise you won't be able to put it down!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book
I just read this book for the first time in several years, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Everyone else has already given a basic summary of its plot, so I won't try for that. However, I greatly appreciated this book.

I have been a fan of Vivian Vande Velde ever since I read CURSES, INC. AND OTHER STORIES.I quickly followed that up by reading several of her other books, including NOW YOU SEE IT... and COMPANIONS OF THE NIGHT.Ms. Vande Velde is the master of spooky stories, whether they be contemporary, paranormal, or fantasy. What she's even better at, though, is writing short stories that have a way of staying with you long after you finish reading them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Young Teens!
I read this book with a few of my friends, and we had such a good time! 'Ever After' is witty, cute, and fun to read! Every teen and pre-teen should read this story about friendship and how sometimes things aren't perfect! Definately worth reading from one of the best YA authors, Rachel Vail!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Relatable!Even at 23...
This made me think back to my teenage days- and I could totally relate! It describes, in great detail, things a girl feels when she's growing up; how we have the ability to obsess over the silliest things, even though they don't seem so silly at the time.5-0 out of 5 stars It was a real eye-opener
this book really opened my eyes. Rachel Vail yet again captures the exact feelings of a teenage girl. The main character, Molly, is growing up and starting to learn how to deal with more serious problems like friends, boys, parents, and life in general. The ending is sad, as Molly's best friend lets her down but she grows stronger from this let down. All teenage girls can relate with Molly and what she goes through. ... Read more

I read this book after I read On Fortune's Wheel and it made understand a lot better some details of the book, of course it is meant to be read prior to OFW. The book is great. If you love fantasy, adventure and a bit of romance, read this book.

Cynthia Voight is an Arachne of storyweaving!
4-0 out of 5 stars Great start
I really enjoyed this book. It was a much stronger told story than Voigt's more experimental Orfe. All the characters get a chance to mature over the course of Jackaroo and enough loose ends are tied up by the conclusion to give the book a satisifying sense of closure while still leaving the Kingdom interesting enough to start off a series of book. I certainly will want to read more of the books in this series! The book would have been even better if Voigt had tightened up the first half of the book where she introduces Gwyn and her motivations for her adventures in the second half of the book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Ahh...okay.
By now, the wonderfully three-dimensional characters such as Dicey and Jeff are beginning to wilt. I recommend this book to fans of Dicey because it is good to find out what happens, but this isn't a book worth reading more than two or three times. (the earlier ones in the series NEVER get old) It's too depressing, and the happy ending doesn't really make up for the depressing parts.5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner
Cynthia Voigt created a bestselling series with the Tillerman family that began with "Homecoming" and ended with this book "Seventeen against The Dealer." Voigt's talented use of action and realistic dialogue to move the story along keeps readers turning the pages and longing for more. I became a Dicey fan early on for her courage and her spunk. Dicey, the whole Tillerman clan make excellent role models for today's young.5-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
Seventeen Against the Dealer was much better than I expected.I read this book to do a report on, and it is very easy to understand, very easy reading.I was able to relate to each of the characters, especially Dicey and Maybeth. This book had something for almost everyone.A little suspence, a little adventure, and a little romance. If you are like me, I can picture a grandmother refusing to be taken to a doctor, eventhough she is near death. If you have read any of Voigt's books, read this one.It does get better after the 2nd chapter! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I really loved this book and literally coulsn't put it down to the point where I read it in one sitting. The book was overall very enjoyable.

    4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read : )
Vivian Vande Velde did much better job on this book, than on Companions of the Night.I really liked Alys and Selendrile. She makes them seem real. Its a good book, you should try reading it. I liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Witty and charming.
Dragon's Bait is wonderfully hilarious. I only picked this book up because I had some gift cards for the book store. I expected that I'd read it once, and it would simply sit on my bookshelf until the end of the world. It's a good thing I like Vivian Vande Velde and picked this up, because it is fantastic! Yes, it's short, but the story itself more than makes up for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars This audio book is abridged.
Even though the Amazon heading says "unabridged", the cover says this audio tape is an abridgement. So if you want it for students to follow along in their books as it plays, it may not be so convenient.

5-0 out of 5 stars finding her place
Dicey Tillerman, the heroine of Homecoming, is having difficulty settling in at her grandmother's, who has adopted her and her three siblings. She finds it hard to let go of shouldering full responsibility, which she was forced to bear when shepherding her family down to her grandmother's.Despite her chip on her shoulder, she manages to make a few good friends, and after her mother passes away, come to terms with the pain and confusion that she's bottled up inside. Will she take her grandmother's words about "reaching out" to heart?
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't worry if it's not good enough for anyone else to hear. Sing, sing a song.
When the Newbery Award (given each year to a children's book that is deemed the best-written work of the past 365 days) is handed to a sequel, I always get a bit incredulous.Really? This book is great in and of itself without having read its predecessor? In my opinion, sequels should never receive awards. If you thought that they were so great, award the first book/movie/album in the series, cause otherwise the awardee isn't going to make much sense.Harumph! There are exceptions to every rule, though."Dicey's Song" maybe one of the few.Unlike Lloyd Alexander's, "The High King" or "The Grey King" by Susan Cooper (the Newbery has a penchant for "King"ly sequels), Cynthia Voigt's quiet masterpiece does not necessarily require that the reader know the story that preceded it.It wouldn't hurt and it would probably make for a much better read, but not reading "Homecoming" isn't going to lessen your enjoyment of Book Two in the Tillerman family series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Over the Moon Takes You There!
This hillarious new take on an favorite old nursery rhyme will have kids howling with delight! The author has transformed the nursery rhyme into a theatre setting.Although some of the language may be a little advanced for younger readers, the illustrations and familiarity of the rhyme will keep their interest. As a teacher I also noticed the many, many prepositions in the text and feel this book would be excellent to use to introduce or reinforce directional words.Rachel Vail and Scott Nash have a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful, amusing remake of classic nursery rhyme
Both my 3 year old and my 18 month old adore this story. It takes the classic nursery rhyme and adapts it to a theater setting. The language might be a bit old for younger children but the pace and the anctics of thecow jumping over the moon are quite involving.Adults as well as childrenwill be amused by this amusing redo of a classic nursery rhyme. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars not one of her best
I enjoyed other books in the Tillerman cycle, but this book was not one of Voigt's best. The main character Bullet, a high school track star and an obstinate loner, is a racist. This is all right, as the book is set in the sixties. However, the protagonist does not noticeably change by the end of the book. He has had a new wrinkle put in his ideas about race, but he is pretty much the same personality that began the book. Whether this bothers you or not depends on your idea of an effective story and intriguing protagonist.
1-0 out of 5 stars boy o boy is right
I had to read this for school. I asked my teacher to read it cause i though it was really boring. She couldnt even make it through. the only fun part was one of my parteners during the group discussions making fun of tamer (hes not racist). The book is bad, I dont recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Among the best books I've read
This book is extremely powerful.Cynthia Voigt interlaced and weaves many ideas about everything - racism, friendship, who you are, who you can be, being different, judging people, pushing your limits, values, ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I liked the beginning of this book because it showed how she got in the accident and it was exciting but in the middle, it got a little boring with her in the hospital. At the end, it was exciting again. I liked the book a lot!

At my school I was assigned to read this book. It was actually a very good book. I am an obcessive reader and I think this was the 8th best book I've ever read! This book will always keep you on the edge of your seat seeing what Rosamunde and Izzy will do next.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A great children's writter
Vivian V. Velde is an excellent children's writter. Even though I'm now starting to get alittle too old for her books, I still enjoy reading her work. After her visit to my small school about 4 or 5 years ago, I became really interested in her books. Actually, her speach made me come to love to read. Before then, I hadn't really liked to pick up a book unless it was for a school project (even then wasn't so fun)! So I bought "There's a dead person following my sister around" and "smart dog" and got them signed by V.V.V. As soon as I got home (well, maybe a few days later), I started to get engrossed in books. I soon found that I LOVE to read. It's all thanks to the great Vivian Vande Velde!
