"He saw the blueness, almost a ball of energy, the crack-flash of color that came from inside his mind, inside his life, and then he was back and down and saw nothing more." You may never know when there will be a day where your stranded on an Island with know where out, you have yourself and Mother Nature with you, that's it. The River is a book that has to do with survival; Brian Robeson was alone with Mother Nature itself for fifty-four days with a small hatchet from his mother. Luckily Brian overcame the wilderness and survived. The U.S Government has contacted Brian to help teach the military and astronauts to survive the way he did. The only problem is he has to go back and face the wilderness again like he did once before. Derek Holtzer a government psychologist will join Derek and take notes for survival skills during the trip.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lyddie- a review by Kelsey
Lyddie is a very poor farm girl who has a crazed mother who believes everything to be a bad sign. Her and her brother Charlie are very close and will do anything for each other. When a bear intrudes on the family Lyddie's mother takes it as a bad sign. She takes her youngest children to her sisters house and leaves Charlie and lyddie to take care of the farm. They end up surviving the winter only to find out their mother has found separate jobs for them. The children reluctantly leave each other as they set out for their jobs. Lyddie is to work in a inn where she gets payed about fifty cents a week. While working at the inn Lyddie gets her chance to change her life. Lyddie goes to work at a factory. Lyddie is known as "close to her money and her friendships" but you will never learn of someone who works harder.
5-0 out of 5 stars baandersonbookworm
For students in the middle grades or higher, Lyddie is a great read. It is a valuable resource for a social studies unit on slavery, the industrial revolution, the labor movement, yellow fever, or child labor. Lyddie is a symbol of strength, determination, and freedom. Paterson has created a strong central character and even though so much history is going on around her, it is on Lyddie that we continually focus our attention. I highly recommend book; very inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars "we can still hop."
Paterson doesn't miss with this great historical fiction about a young girl's struggles. This is a great girl adventure book about dashing hopes and the strength and will to endure at all costs. The portrait of Vermont farm life and Lowell Mill girls and workers rights during the 1800s is dead on. This is great read and a great teaching tool. ... Read more

"Emperor Mage" is the third book in Tamora Pierce's "The Immortals" quartet. If you haven't read the previous books in the series, please do so because then you will enjoy this one more. I want to point out, too, that some characters in Pierce's "Song of the Lioness" quartet appear here too, so if you have read it you will appreciate this book even more. Despite that, and as I already said in a previous review regarding "The immortals", this new series can also be read on its own.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Long Way From Chicago By Richard Peck
Time comes when Joey and Mary Alice must visit their Grandma Dowdel in Illinois. Each year they visit, Grandma Dowdel may be getting older , but is actually growing younger inside. Richard Peck captures special moments of every trip in each chapter. The most memorable chapter for me is called, " The Day ofJudgment".I enjoyed reading this chapter the most, because I think this chapterportrays Grandma Dowdel the best. This book was influential for me, because it had an important moral in it. Peck wanted us to find the true meaningof the book, which is that you're never to old tobe a kid. Richard Peck used the moral of the storyto create one of his important characters-Grandma Dowdel. In the beginning, I thought the Dowdels would be in for the longestmonotonoustrip of their lives. But now I realized I was completely wrong . Every yearturned out better than the previous year. This also tells me that you can never tell a persons heart from the outside. I also learned that I should show more respect to the elderly, because theyhave been throughnumerous experiences. The characters in this book have accents which verifies that it takes place in the past.

    Last Book In The Universe
4-0 out of 5 stars Story of a Great Adventure
The Last Book in the Universe really makes you think about the future. It shows you that the future might not be as bright as we hoped. Spaz's world is sad and chaotic. Rodman Philbrick has created some really in depth characters. My favorite character was Bean. She was nice to everyone and seemed to understand their situation. As I read, I found myself wanting to be more like her. The book has some great lessons and one of the most important is that reading is a big part of our lives and that without it our world would fall apart, like in the book. When I started this book I couldn't put it down. Spaz was always on the edge of danger and at the end of every chapter there was a cliffhanger.Rodman Philbrick did a great job showing what the Urb and Eden were like and what it was like to live there. I really liked the futuristic language that was used because the words showed how our world changed into that terrible place. The end of the book seemed to leave you hanging and I was a little confused. It felt like there should be more or a sequel to the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Enthralling Novel!!!!!!!!!
Amazing plot! The last book in the Universe is a riveting roller coaster of emotions. The characters in this book are really energizing. Also, their names seize to amaze me. Seriously, who can think up names like Spaz, Lotti Getts, Billy Bizmo, and Ryter?Rodman Philbrick did a remarkable describing the Urb and what it looked like, smelled like, and felt like. Within this book there are numerous sections that are very symbolic. An example of that would be when, Ryter talks about the famous epileptic people compensated for their disease by strengthening their brains. They fought epilepsy with brainpower.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware that movement that generates its own songs.
Doggone it, Katherine Paterson, stop making me cry!Under normal circumstances the number of books that make me tear up is a slim number that could be counted on one hand. And most of those books, if I was going to be honest with you, were probably written by Katherine Paterson.Ms. Paterson is a bit of a wonder.Year after year, decade after decade, she churns out consistently well-written meaningful pieces of children's fiction. The last book of Ms. Paterson's that I read was her rather remarkable, "The Same Stuff As Stars".Now, however, she's decided to traipse back into the world of historical fiction, alongside all the other authors this year, and produce a bit of fascinating history that can show a situation clear distinctions between good and bad, and yet leave enough room for people with nebulous motives. If complex narratives is the name of the game, consider Paterson a player.

i thought this book was interesting because it was true to the historical of the civil war and it had a nice mixture with the fiction of the story. i thought the ending was very truthfull to the times that the charecter lived, and i liked the hard truth of charley dying in the end because of his wounds

A deer in his canoe, a bear attack, a leg stabbed with anarrowhead--it's just another week in the life of 16-year-old Brian Robeson. In his opinion, this beats a date at Mackey's Pizza Den, a fight with a bully, and a video game at the mall any day. After having survived a plane crash and 54 days in the Canadian wilderness several years earlier, Brian can't seem to fit into "civilization." The world of high school and family life makes no sense anymore. So Brian begins to plan. It's time to return to the woods. This time, though, he makes no plans to come back home. Read more

I think Brian's return is one of the better books I've read because it relates to nature. The reason why I like nature so much is because I live out in the country so I'm out in the woods alot just like Brian. My favorite part in the book was when he scared the bear away. I liked that part because it was really suspenseful. If I would have to go up against a bear with a bow. I wouldn't wait until it got sloser to me if it was already tring to corner me like it did to Brian.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for Joey is a great book!
If you are reading this review, it means you might be thinking aboout buying this book. You should! It is an amazing tale of two brothers who loved each other and loved football. John couldn't do much for his sick brother Joey, but he could score touchdowns for him, and he did. When Joey asked for four touchdowns, John gave them to him. This is an amazingly poinent story of two brothers. It was something for all of us.

John Cappelletti was a rising football star at Penn State. His younger brother Joey was suffering from leukemia.John did the one thing he could do for Joey, he scored touchdowns.John ended up winning the Heisman Trophy as the top player in collegiate football. At the awards dinner, John gave one of the most emotional and inspirational speeches ever delivered, as he gave his trophy to Joey.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
I love this book! I have read it so many times, my book has fallen apart, and I have had to purchase a new one. This book is such a touching story about courage and the love between siblings. I am a football fan which does help, but even those who don't understand the game of football, can understand this story of compassion and selfless giving. I don't care how many times I read this book, I cry at the end, even though I know what is coming. READ THIS BOOK!!! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

What do you do when you're being charged by a red-eyed furious wall ofbrown fur that is an insane moose? How do you make a weapon with your barehands? How do you sneak up on a grouse or a rabbit, kill it with a well-aimedarrow, and cook it over a fire--without a pot? All this and lots more isessential learning for Brian Robeson, the young wilderness survivor in GaryPaulsen's classic novel Read more

If you want to read this book, make sure you have read at least Hatchet if you want to understand the book well.
    5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!! :)
Gary Paulsen's book "Guts" is not only a book about the wilderness, but its about a young man's life. A man who was raised by alcholics, who left home when he was 12 years old, and from then on his life was changed forever. He lived in the wildreness most of his life (more like his whole life). He is one tough cookie. He has been trampled by moose and almost frozen. My over all opinion of this book would be, it's really eye grabbing and it makes you never want to stop reading it. I highly recommend this book to guys or people in general who have been through alot in their life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Alright Book
This book is about Gary Paulsen in the wilderness, surviving for himself. This is what he chooses to do. He likes being with himself all alone hunting for food. In all of his chapters it says how he lives his life. He had alcoholic parents, that never cared for him. Basicly he was all alone most of his life.In each chapter it talks about what he did to survive. He also mentions what he did in Hatchet when the plane crashed, and he was the only one that survived. He was the only one on that deserted island. That really happened to him. None of this book is fiction, it all happened to him. This book is good for boys who are wanting to read about an adventure, Gary Paulsen's life. ... Read more

Author: Richard Peck Publisher: Dial Books Tiffany Robinson
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!
I absolutley loved this book. Richard Peck blends hummor so well into his stories and this one is no different. Very vivid characters allow us to follow as though we were in the story. I love some of the teaching strategies that the "new teacher" uses, and I love the glimpse that Richard Peck shows us of how school was very different not tooo long ago.

Book was wonderful, really enjoyed the new world Tamora has woven and loved the characters. Only gripe is the title.. in England the books weren't named for the characters, but like this:
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Listen To Them, It Was Great!
I don't think anyone is complaining about the beginning, where the mage Niko finds the four children and brings them to Winding Circle. And I don't think anyone has a problem with the ending, where the four come together and the action is as hard and fast as it gets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever!!
I had to also read other books for the Summer Reading during my own time, and I borrowed this book from the library. I'm so glad that I started off by picking up the first book of the Song of the Lioness quartet (Alanna: The First Adventure). After I read the first book, I was hooked and read all the other 3 books in the quartet in 2 days. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!! You won't regret reading this. But please read the first book, Alanna: The First Adventure, because this book that I'm reviewing is the 4th book in the quartet. If you read this or any of the other books besides the 1st book first, then you won't understand them. But please just give it a try and buy/borrow this book.
