Sent in 1910 to live with distant relatives who own a rubber plantationalong the Amazon River, English orphan Maia is excited. She believes she is infor brightly colored macaws, enormous butterflies, and "curtains of sweetlyscented orchids trailing from the trees." Her British classmates warn her ofman-eating alligators and wild, murderous Indians. Unfortunately, no onecautions Maia about her nasty, xenophobic cousins, who douse the house in bugspray and forbid her from venturing beyond their coiffed compound. Maia, however, is resourceful enough to find herself smack in the middle of moreexcitement than she ever imagined, from a mysterious "Indian" with aninheritance, to an itinerant actor dreading his impending adolescence, to aremarkable journey down the Amazon in search of the legendary giant sloth.Read more

LOoking for an adventerous but challenging book?Eva Ibbotsons book Journey to the River Sea is and exciting story about a young girl named Maia who is sent to live in the Amamzon because of all of her money as well as because her parents passed away. She is nervous about her journey when she finds out how different her governess or nanny/teacher is far from her daydreams of a pleasent and exciting mentor. But, she soon learns to love her governess, Miss Minton or "MInty."With many exciting journeys and daydreams that really do come true, like traveling down the Amamzon river and many other exciting journeys, this book is one that you'll never want to set down- and I really mean it!I was thrilled to find a book that had so many different ways of keeping your attention, from one chapter to the next. With happy, sad, and thrilling parts, this book is a great chioce for skilled and active readers.Enjoy this exciting journey to the Amazon!!

A well written story about a young orphaned girl's journey from Britain to Brazil where she begins a new life with very distant relatives who are only interested in the money they receive for keeping her.
4-0 out of 5 stars Journey to the River Sea
This book, Journey to the River Sea was a very good read. I liked this book especially because I have never been to the Amazon and I thought this was a very descriptive book on the subject. I have read many of Eva Ibbotson's works and this book is one of her greatest. But I do not recommended her latest books because they have started to suck. My favorite part of this book was when Clovis wants to keep living in west wood because he doesn't want to kill Sir Aubrey and also to save Finns life. I think if you are about 2-102 you should read this. I give this book about 4 stars out of 5 So all in all I thought Journey to the river sea was totally awesome! So you better read it.... OR ELSE!!! ... Read more

I love Eva Ibbotson whatever she is writing and this has to be my favorite of all her books.Annika is a charming heroine and all the characters in the books are well developed including the minor ones. The descriptions of Vienna are lovely and made me want to travel there.Just a very enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Old-Fashioned Story, with Something for Everyone
The Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson is a wonderful old-fashioned story. The cover of the edition that I read includes a NY Time blurb "with echoes of Frances Hodgson Burnett." Perhaps it was the power of suggestion, but I could really see these echoes myself (particularly of "The Secret Garden").
5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely
This book seems kind-of long when you first look at it but it needsto be long to fill in all of the detail. I loved all of the twists that I never would have thought of happening. The end is very surprising, but very good. Eva Ibbotson did a wonderful job writing

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough...
I read Ibbotson's "Island of the Aunts" and loved that book, so I picked up "Platform" and eagerly read through it. I was, however, disappointed with the predictable storyline. The only saving point was that the ending didn't happen quite like I thought it would, but the prince was still the prince and everyone lived happily ever after, yadda yadda yadda. Borr-ring.

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't get my eyes of this book!
This book is so interesting. Great detail and a wonderful sesnse of humor. I love that this book includes magical creatures in it. Children and adults should read this book and I am telling you they will love it. Im proud to say this book will make a great book report book and a book just to enjoy. I can't wait to read Eva Ibbotson's other book The Secret of Platform 13. tHis book is fun and awesome I think any child would like to read as I did. I am in sixth grade and I know that everyone will love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Identical to Monster Mission
Before I review the book, I wanted to comment on something. As you may have read from other reviewers, this book is identical in text/content to another book called "Monster Mission" from the same author. Please don't blame the author for this, as the problem lies with two different publishers both owning rights to print the book. (Puffin, and Macmillan) The book by one publisher has a different title and different cover art but it is the same book, word for word. This happened to another Ibbotson book "The Haunting of Hiram C. Hopgood" and "The Haunting of Granite Falls", are identical as well. To make it more confusing, I bought a book before these US releases, "The Haunting of Hiram" in Canada, and it is also the same book with yet another cover and title.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read It. You'll LOVE it.
Island of Aunts is the book that got me into Eva Ibbotson's books. It's just the kind of book I always dreamed of writing, except I always ended up making it cheesy and overly dramatic. Eva Ibbotson, however, makes her stories purely magical. If you can't decide what to give your children or some kid you know for birthday or christmas, don't hesitate to hand this book. there is only one way they could possibly be disappointed: they read it already. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great story, wild characters, laugh out loud situations
Be aware that there are 3 books with the exact same story word for word. "The Haunting of Granite Falls", "The Haunting of Hiram C. Hopgood", and "The Haunting of Hiram" are all the same story by the same author. Just a different title and different cover art, same book inside. This is not the author's fault by the way, it is just that 2 publishers have the right to publish, Puffin and Macmillan, and this is what they have done. For some reason that is done with another book from this author, "Island of the Aunts" is also released as "Monster Mission". Personally, I like the artwork on the Macmillan covers better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Your Average Ghost Story
Although DIAL-A-GHOST was about ghosts, it was funny and imaginative, not scary. I really liked this book. And, because it wasn't that scary, I consider this book a ghost story for people who don't like ghost stories.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Dial-a-Ghost
I love this book because it's about GHOSTS. The author of this book writes many ghost stories such as The Secret of Platform13 or The Great Ghost Rescue. I would compare this book to the Scary Stories Series. The author puts several interesting pictures in the book. The character I like the best is the dad of the Watson's family. I like him because he's a doctor and because he works for the navy. A really good part of the story is when Oliver sees Adie's hands go threw the closet door.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost "Great"
What if ghosts not only were among us, but required gross, run-down castles, abbeys and ruins to live in? And what if renovations and pollution made them sick? This goofy tale of a cute ghost, a conscientious schoolboy, and a bunch of freaky spooks is an amusing light read, even with its preachy passages.5-0 out of 5 stars The great ghost rescue
The Great Ghost Rescue is a very good book. The main character is Humphrey the Horrible. Humphrey is a ghost. Humphrey is a bit of a disappointment to his mother and father. He doesn't moan or wail, his ectoplasm is pinkish, and he can't even disappear properly. Humphrey's mother is a hag, and Humphrey's father is a Scottish ghost with a sword sticking out of his chest. Humphrey's brother is a screaming scull, and his sister constantly moans because she can't reach her bowl of water to clean off her bloodstains. Yes, Humphrey's parents are worried about him.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly hilarious!
Once you pass by these kinds of books, you might think to yourself that you would never try to read them until you had absolutely nothing left to do. That was the same for me. I sat one day staring at my shelf of books, and decided that I would read it, but if I thought the first page would be pure torture, I would just drop it. Five minutes later, I sat with my eyes glued to the book, laughing at paragraphs with clusters of witty humor. It seemed like I was tumbling through a dimension where common sense hailed magic, and where good always taught a lesson to evil. Don't worry; you'll see Eva Ibbotson's stories unfold right before your own eyes once you experience this book.

British author Eva Ibbotson has gained a reputation for charming, funny light fantasy, and her popularity has only grown with the rise of books like "Harry Potter." 5-0 out of 5 stars romance for the intelligent reader
This is one of my all-time favourite books, the kind of comfort-blanket you can turn to when ill, dull or depressed, and almost as good as Jane Austen in that respect. The story is conventional, in the sense that a pretty young girl goes to work as matron in a boarding school and falls in love, but it's the writing, the details and the characters which give it a kind of magic. (Anyone new to Ibbotson's work should also check out her superb children's novels, especially The Star of Kazan, which has a similar heroine). Ellen is the daughter of a trio of fierce feminists, who are horrified when, instead of pursuing a serious career and finishing her degree at Cambridge, she becomes an expert on matters domestic - cooking espeically. Ellen leaves England to work at a progressive boarding school in Austria, where sensitive children are dumped by rich parents and taught to be forks in drama classes. (The author attended Dartington School in the 1930s). Unfortunately, Hitler's rise to power is impingeing even on the demi-paradise of rural Austria, and it turns out the mysterious Marek is rescuing Jews who manage to escape the camps. A composer who wins your heart instantly because he hangs bullies and Nazis out of windows and refuses to let his music be played by the Reich, he falls reluctantly in love with Ellen, but almost loses her thanks to the coming War.

I am an avid fan of Eva Ibbotson's children's books, whose descriptions are in between JK Rowlings's and Edith Nesbitt's.This book was slightly less enchanting as her children's fantasies, but there was still that wonderful rich description.I do have to argue against the reviewer who said that few could match her warm, lyrical style; Jane Austen's and Charlotte Bronte's comes close. The plot is a fairly straightforward tale of a young woman who goes to work at a boarding school, so it isn't the most gripping tale, but it's still a wonderful beautiful story.Read it if you love Anne of Green Gables, Jane Eyre, or Ms. Ibbotson's fantasy books, or if you love the English language, or just spend a sophisticated, enjoyable few hours with a great book.Email me if you want more info or have a specific question.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romance and Excitement
This is the first Ibbotson book I had read and it ties with A Countess Below Stairs as my favorite. The author creates such memorable characters that you can't help wanting the story to go on forever. I loaned this book to a friend and we laugh over the characters like Andromeda, the self regulating baby. I could not put it down. I love to tell my friends about Ibbotson, but it seems like all her books are out of print so you have to get them at libraries. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story mixed with a little romance. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not For Kids
I bought this book, mistakenly thinking that it was another of Eva Ibbottson's children's books. While it IS a very nice romance, one that even younger (11-15) girls might enjoy, it is not a children's book.5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner by Ibbotson
Amazon's branch in the UK carries this in paperback and her others as well.Readers also use interlibrary loans to find her novels.I virtually pulled an "all nighter" to finish this novel and that rather says it all. A young Russian countess is forced to work as an English earl's housemaid because of having fled revolutionary torn Russia. The earl is engaged to a beautiful heiress who is another one of Ibbotson's high comic characters. She believes in eugenics, getting rid of unfit people. The people in the earl's village and household use that vice to sink her boat with the earl. This is a fitting failing for the time period because it is right before Hitler and WWII.Ibbotson always seems to have the other woman as the villainess for the hero's affections. However, she presents them as such high figures of comedy that they are not at all clichs.I also love Ibbotson's use of time periods that few others seem inclined to use. This is right after WWI and the effect of that war on the survivors is part of the story.Ibbotson was a native of Vienna who settled in England herself so she brings all of her eastern European insight into her novels. This resembles a delightful fairy tale but there is no paranormal or fantasy aspect to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish all these books were in print.
This is such a beautiful book.It and 'The Morning Gift' are Eva's best books.Unfortunately I haven't found it in English anywhere and have only read it in German, but I think the beauty of the story crosses the languagebarrier.I know the 'evil' fiancee is a cliche, but we are willing her, wishing for her to be evil. This is a fairytale given a more believablesetting. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I was expecting a different type of book...
Having heard this book described as a romance, that was what I was expecting.I think a better definition of this book would be a "love story", as considering a book a romance usually conjures up the narrow definition of what the romance genre is usually comprised of - two people who fall in love and get married (almost always), but especially, live happily ever after.Well, this story fits only one part of the definition - the h/h in this story are certainly in love, but will there be a happily ever after? So, this story sort of took me by surprise, but once I got over that, I did enjoy this book very much.Besides, there are plenty of other characters who do get their HEA, and even Susannah does get a sort-of HEA, so I guess it sort of fits into the romance genre.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best romance novel I have ever read
Ibbotson creates truly wonderful characters---Susanna, the heroine of this novel, is the best of her creations.Susanna's romance isn't a perfect one (whose is?) and the story has rather sad moments but Ibbotson creates, as always, a world which any reader would want to visit. Her sly comments on political radicalism (in the form of Nini, the anarchist model/seamstress who works in Susanna's shop) are wonderful---too bad more earnest political writers never encountered Nini or thought more deeply about how difficult it can be to want "the revolution" while looking pretty...Everyone to whom I have lent the book has loved it and wants to buy a copy (I'm more than a bit worried that I may lend this book out and never get it back).

5-0 out of 5 stars A slice of life
I found this to be a delightful read-a gentle, easy read and a fascinating microcosm of life in Vienna just prior to W.W.1.Our heroine owns a dress shop in a quaint city square, peopled by characters from various walks of life. It's not a book to strain anyones concentration as it flows along so pleasantly and is just what one could call"a nice little read".I don't mean that to sound patronising but it's a feel good read which I hope that others will enjoy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Favorite
This book is one of my favorites. I picked it up not knowing the author at all and became lost in a touching romance. I now try to find her books wherever I can. This is usually in libraries, because most of her adult books at out of print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Do The Best Books Go Out Of Print (OOP)?
This book is not hard to find used or at a public library.Otherwise, I would hate to get anyone's hopes up.There is nothing worse than saying, "I just read a fabulous book and you will never be able to find it yourself."This novel is set in Europe and South America in the early 20th century before WWI, a time period I would like to see used more frequently. The heroine, Harriet, meets a little boy at an English estate who tells her she must somehow travel to South America and find his lost uncle to redeem his faltering estate.Harriet enters a touring ballet company of "Swan Lake" as a dancer in the corps by running away from the stifling home of her father-professor in Cambridge, England. The troupe travels to South America to perform and there she meets the hero, Rom, the lost uncle. There are some amazing coincidences in this book that you might not accept in a lesser work. There are also some big misunderstandings between Harriet and Rom.However, this novel is so well written by its Viennese author that those plot devices cause no annoyance whatsoever. The author's writing style is quite distinct from an American's or a UK writer's style which I found a refreshing change since those two writing groups tend to dominate the market. There are also many humorous moments and characters that will have you LOL as you read. The prima ballerina and the insect professor, to name two, are absolutely hilarious.I am now trying to find this author's other novels, all of which seem to be out of print and I can only hope that I beat you other auction aficionados to the punch! Thanks to EP and LLF for recommending this over on an online message board. You couldn't have been more right about this novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting
In 1912, Cambridge, Harriet Morton lives in an oppresive household with her dry, clutch-fist aunt and narrow-minded father.Like Anna (of A Countess Below Stairs by the same author), Harriet possesses the pure, luminescent quality that Ibbotson seems to favor in her leading females.Harriet's main joy in her life is her dancing lesson; she is offered a chance to become part of a troupe going to the Amazons. She meets at a neglected Yorkshire mansion an endearing, odd little boy named Henry that begs her to find The Boy; Henry is sure that The Boy is in the Amazons and that he will save the ruined household. Struck with this serendipitious sign, Harriet takes the chance to follow her dream to the far-away land.We meet the bumbling, insensitive suitor, and the tempermental, aging ballerina; we meet Harriet's roommate and friend, Marie-Claude, a beauty who wants to open an inn by the mountains.Sometimes, the secondary characters can "break-or-make" a story; in this case, they perform their roles to perfection.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Eva Ibbotson's great books
I read these books quite a long time ago, and they're still on my shelves. Eva Ibbotson made me laugh and at the same time I couldn't put the book down. These books are like Harry Potter- I read Harry Potter first, and when I was looking for something to read, I found these books. I bought all three of them and do not regret it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Charming fantasy romps
British author Eva Ibbotson has gained a reputation for charming, funny light fantasy, and her popularity has only grown with the rise of books like "Harry Potter." This slipcased three-pack is a fun collection of Ibbotson's most popular titles: "The Secret of Platform 13," "Which Witch?" and "Island of the Aunts."
